Volkswagen Golf sportwagen problems

The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).

The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.

Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.

The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

Common Volkswagen Golf sportwagen problems

The Volkswagen Golf SportWagen has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners, as detailed below:

  • Rear Coil Springs Fracture: This recall affects certain 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen, 2019 Jetta, 2015-2019 Golf, and 2018-2019 Tiguan vehicles. The rear coil springs may prematurely fracture, leading to a safety risk. Volkswagen will replace the rear axle coil springs free of charge for affected vehicles.
  • Shift Lever Micro Switch Contacts Build-Up: This recall affects certain 2015-2019 GTI, 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 Golf, 2012-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen and 2011-2018 Jetta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, manual handbrake and keyless entry. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in "Park," leading to a safety risk.
  • Fuel System Gasoline Leak: This recall affects certain front-wheel drive 2015-2020 Audi A3 Sedan, 2015-2019 Audi A3 Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, 2018 Golf Sportwagen GP, 2018-2019 Golf Sportwagen A7, 2015-2017 Golf Sportwagen, 2015-2020 Golf GTI, and 2015-2020 Golf A7 vehicles. Due to a problem with a suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system and possibly leak out of the charcoal canister. Dealers will replace the suction pump free of charge for affected vehicles.
  • Steering Column Locking Anti-Theft Device: This recall affects certain 2015-2018 Volkswagen Golf and Golf Sportwagen vehicles. The build of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition while the vehicle shift lever is not in "Park," leading to a safety risk. Volkswagen will install an additional switch and circuit board free of charge for affected vehicles.
  • Diesel Emissions Scandal: Volkswagen has admitted to using a defeat device on its supposedly 'clean diesel' vehicles to skirt around US emissions standards. This issue affects many Volkswagen models, including the Golf SportWagen.
  • Noises and Leaks: Owners have reported issues with noises and leaks, including squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks. These issues have been reported for the 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen, with problems such as seals/drains on the sunroof failing, resulting in rain water draining into the trunk of the car, and front driver side suspension making a slight banging sound on some bumps in the road.

  • Summary: Left and Rear Coil Springs have snapped in half due to unreasonably dangerous defective manufacturing. This is consistent with the open recall for the exact condition: NHTSA's campaign number: 19V188000. However, VW North America refuses to consider my vehicle for the recall as my vin is not included. Although the snaps reflect a a dangerous manufacturing defect, VW incorrectly has determined the rear coil springs on my vehicle are not "in the batch" of defective coil springs.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-26
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-07
  • VIN: 3VW717AU7JM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The clutch master cylinder failed at less than 37,000 miles and is not covered under the manufacturer's standard (for 2018 models) 72,000 mile warranty. I had to spend $500+ to replace the part at an independent mechanic. Fluid levels were fine and there were no leaks. Just a faulty part. I have owned cars with a manual transmission for almost 40 years and never once had to replace any clutch components, including in cars with well over 100,000 miles on them. It was a potentially dangerous event. I depressed the clutch pedal to put it in gear and the pedal sank to the floor. I couldn't get the car in gear. I couldn't restart the car. Fortunately I was on a side street not too far from home. I was able to pull up the clutch pedal and pump some pressure back into the system and drive home. I can only imagine how scary and unsafe this would have been if I had been stopped on a highway.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-25
  • VIN: 3VWCA7AU2FM
  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: The emissions modification calibration by Volkswagen causes the coolant to be exposed to elevated temperatures due to higher exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) use to control emissions. These elevated higher temperatures degrade the coolant faster than designed and lead to precipitates falling out of solution in the factory filled G13 coolant. This causes buildup and deposits to form throughout the cooling system, particularly in the heater core which can block proper coolant flow & lead to coolant system failure, specifically of hoses associated with the heater core. When these fail the engine can over heat, and stop which causes loss of steering, propulsion and braking abilities. There is a similar problem on 2012 models with the TDI engine, which has been addressed but the 2015 models are being stranded on the roads creating a safety hazard to the drivers of the vehicles and other motorists on the road.

  • Summary: VW USA is offering no help in getting our recall work done. Their only suggestion is for us to work with our shipper. Our car is located in Italy because we are an active duty family stationed under orders at naval air station Sigonella. Our shipper has contacted VW Italy, and they refuse to help. The shipper also notes that they can’t ship the car anywhere anyways because the recall has to do with the fuel system. In effect, our car is now trapped in Italy, unable to be shipped off the continent. Perhaps NHTSA could persuade VW USA to perform our recall work here in Italy?

Problem returned 2 weeks later (XXX). While driving home from work noticed extremely strong fuel odor in car. Pulled off in a store parking lot, someone ran up and told me my car was leaking fuel. Gas was literally pouring out, I lost 1/4 tank of fuel on way home. The fuel was leaking under hood, under fuel tank area and under the rear passenger seat. I had the car towed to the dealer. Volkswagen does not have an actual fix for the problem. I should be given a replacement car due to Volkswagen being unable to correct this serious safety issue. Latest negative Volkswagen Golf sportwagen car reviews

  1. Eugene Skiles 2025-07-28

    Vehicle year: 2016

I really appreciate blind spot monitors, especially when driving on a busy freeway. I have them on my Toyota Avalon and Mazda 3, and they work seamlessly. However, I have had some issues with the blind spot monitor on the VW Golf. The monitors are difficult to see, partly because they're tiny and partly because the lights are not bright enough, making it really difficult to see them in bright sunlight. Additionally, the turn signal lights are placed too close to the blind spot monitors, which can cause hesitation and make it unsafe to change lanes. I believe that VW should address these issues as soon as possible. I also find that the rear cross traffic alert is occasionally unreliable, which can be concerning. As for the adaptive cruise control, I have deactivated it because it can cause sudden deceleration even when there is ample space between vehicles. Overall, I believe that safety features are important, and I hope that VW can improve these features in the future.

  2. Robbie Jerde 2025-07-03

    Vehicle year: 2017

As owners of a much beloved 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI, we carefully considered purchasing another VW. After evaluating many options, we decided on a new 2016 Golf Sportwagen TSI as our second vehicle. We found the Golf Sportwagen to be a strong contender, with a more responsive engine, superior transmission, smoother and quieter ride, more controlled handling and braking, better interior and exterior fit and finish, and a slightly higher seat position and more interior and storage space. The cargo space is cavernous, and significantly larger than most comparable small SUV's. Towing capacity with an added hitch has also proven excellent. We effortlessly drove 1,500 miles this fall with a 1,600 lb teardrop trailer over mountainous western terrain, and we hardly noticed we were towing anything. Despite these positives, however, we have encountered more reliability issues with the Sportwagen than with any car we have owned in 20 years. We have had three major electronic defects we have had to deal with, including the failure of the instrument cluster, and two occasions where the electronic ignition simply died with no explanation. Our local dealership handled the troubleshooting and repairs poorly, requiring multiple return trips to get it right. Now, the radio/info system is failing, with all audio functions periodically cutting out 2-3 times a week. Bluetooth and voice controls are also unreliable, and the speed-dependent volume control doesn't work at all. Mechanically, shifting is not as smooth as it was initially and there is excessive roll forward/back after the car is placed in park. We have also had the car in several times for a speed-dependent rubbing noise that sounds like the early stages of a wheel bearing failure, but they insist nothing is wrong. It seems like you've been experiencing some issues with your car. The team at VW would like to help you resolve these problems as soon as possible. Please let us know how we can assist you with the vibration/hum and front collision avoidance system. We understand that fuel efficiency is important to our customers, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by the low mpg. We appreciate your loyalty to VW and hope to have the opportunity to improve your experience with our brand in the future.

It's a good car overall, although there have been some quality and reliability issues. I had to bring the car to the dealer for three separate repairs before I hit 10,000 miles, which was a bit frustrating. However, the ride is excellent (when the car isn't vibrating), the interior is great, and the seats are really comfortable. The engine is alright, but the transmission can struggle a bit at speeds between 20 and 60 mph. Overall, it's a decent car that has some room for improvement.

The car looks great and has excellent highway mpg, but unfortunately, we've experienced some issues with it. We've had some electrical problems that have been frustrating, and we've had to take it to the repair shop more often than we'd like. One time, the entire steering wheel went dead, including the airbag. We've also noticed some strange things happening when we leave the car sitting for a while, which drains the battery. While it's not what we expected from a two-year-old car with only 19k miles, we're hopeful that these issues can be resolved soon.

Our 2016 Golf Sportwagen is a great car with good performance, decent mileage, and great cargo and convenience. However, we have unfortunately experienced some issues with the car's electrical system. Over the past four years, we have had six major electrical failures, which have left us stranded on four occasions. We have also had to replace the keys due to a range issue, and the battery has drained completely on several occasions due to a series of electrical glitches. Additionally, we have experienced issues with the tires grinding against the alloy wheel rims, which has produced a constant variable rubbing sound. Despite these issues, we have found our VW dealership to be helpful and accommodating. We hope that VW will continue to improve their engineering and address these issues in future models. Overall, we still enjoy driving our Golf Sportwagen and appreciate its many features.

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a quick update on my car. It's been amazing so far! I haven't had any issues except for a possible pinhole leak near the rear hatch door, but nothing major. I got a great deal on it too - just under $21,000 out the door using TrueCar (MSRP $21,625 + $820 delivery fee). The 2016 Golf Sportwagen TSI S is definitely a great value. I usually don't buy new cars because of the depreciation, but with a new addition to our family, I needed something reliable without any hassle of maintenance issues. This car has more space than a Mazda CX-3, Mazda 3 Hatchback, and many other crossovers. With ~30 cubic feet with the seats up and ~66 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, it's perfect for our massive stroller, luggage and even a few oddities from Ikea on a weekend trip to San Diego with the baby/car seat, wife, and mother-in-law. If my mother-in-law wasn't in the car we could fold 60% of the rear seats even! The technology in the car is amazing too. Apple CarPlay is very intuitive and streams my 320 kbps Deezer app on my iPhone to the car flawlessly. Plus, Apple Maps is excellent. The sound quality isn't Premium BMW sound, but it's not far off. It's better than my amplified aftermarket stereo system in another car I have. The base trim Of course, I wouldn't seriously consider modifying a warrantied vehicle until it's out of the 5 year/60k mile power train warranty. The EA888 1.8 turbo direct injection engine is an amazing piece of technology. The turbo bolts directly onto the head and its exhaust manifolds are integrated into the heads surrounded by coolant passages. This improves engine warm-up time for better engine wear/longevity, improved fuel efficiency, and quicker cabin heat for passengers. Allegedly, this 1.8T engine picks up ~100 ft lbs of torque and ~60 horsepower with just ECU tuning through APR. That makes it on par with a stock GTI or quicker. Handling is adequate, albeit a bit squishy (compared to my bone-shattering 03 Nissan 350z Track, 06 BMW E90 3-series with run flats and 93 Mercedes 190e SportLine). Steering feel and input is slightly delayed due to tire size (195/65/15 Bridgestone Ecopia 422 Plus 580 UTQG). While the tire may be good for improved fuel economy MPG's, its obvious setbacks are a huge sidewall that flexes under cornering and small contact area resulting in

I must say, I really love this car! As a wagon enthusiast, I found my options to be quite limited, but this car exceeded my expectations. Before settling on the Sportwagen, I test drove several other cars such as the Civic, Accord, Mazda 3, and others. As other reviews have noted, this car is a driver's car with crisp handling, reasonable acceleration, and a solid build. The fact that it's a wagon just adds to its awesomeness! At low speeds (<15 mph), it may search for the right gear, but it quickly finds its groove. The 1.8 turbo is perfectly suited to the car and it never feels under-powered. The seats are also very comfortable, both in the front and back. The only downside is that the resolution of the 5

After hearing about VW's troubles, I decided to take a closer look at their vehicles. I've always been a fan of their driving dynamics, so I ended up purchasing the VW Golf Sportwagen S (MK7) as a local 'runabout'. The test drive was a blast and I got a great deal on it. Although I was very happy with my previous car, an Acura RDX with 80K miles, I have no regrets about my VW purchase. The Golf is incredibly fun to drive and handles city streets with ease. It also has plenty of cargo room and great fuel economy. The best part is how quiet it is and how well it handles. It's now our go-to car whenever we head out. The other option is our 2016 Honda Pilot, which is also a great car, but not as nimble as the VW Golf. I've owned three VWs in the past, including a MK1 Golf (Rabbit), so it's great to be back in a VW Golf.

As a loyal VW driver/owner, I fell in love with my wife's loaded TDI Jetta Sportwagen years ago and never got over it when she traded it in. The handling and pep were just amazing, so when it came time to replace my trusty Rabbit, I knew I had to get a Golf Sportwagen. I was lucky enough to snag a base model for well under MSRP. This car is so much fun to drive, it's peppy and the turbo plus that signature VW handling make it a joy to drive. The acceleration is ample and the handling makes me long for some curvy country roads or hills. I would have preferred the manual, but I'm more than happy with the automatic. It's a practical family car that can haul a ton of groceries, sports gear or musical instruments quite easily with multiple kids in the car. Add a roof rack and you've got a lot of space for extras. The mileage is respectable, 22-24 city, 37-38 highway. You don't really need 4motion. It looks much cooler than crossovers in its class. Think of this as an entry level Audi (more so if you get the loaded version). The interior is groovy, I actually like the cloth a bit better than the leatherette. The driver's seat is really comfortable and the sound system is good, not amazing. The Apple Carplay and display is a fantastic feature for iPhone users and a major upgrade for me, though probably standard for many cars by now. The heating and cooling is ample and I don't miss all the bells and whistles or sunroof much at all. If you want a no-frills fun to drive car, you can't lose with the Sportwagen. I would absolutely test drive an electric version if they make one.

This compact vehicle offers the best value and is the perfect combination of drivability and practicality. The DSG/4Motion combination is a huge plus, and the 7 year or 72k manufacturer's warranty is a great bonus. After 15k miles of mixed driving, my enjoyment remains high. I love driving this car in any weather and road condition. The 4Motion is pretty reliable in snowed roads, and it holds amazingly in tight curves. The extra cargo space in the wagon is another big plus, which can accommodate for a wide range of loads, including the occasional trip to IKEA. So far, my only visits to the dealer were for a 10k basic service and more recently for a minor recall related to a 'micro switch' on the steering wheel. After having reached the 30k mark without any issues, I continue to love the versatility and drivability of this vehicle. It behaves accordingly to any driving condition, rain or shine, and the extra cargo space is always a big plus for the occasional family road and camping trips. 60k miles later and a new set of tires. After upgrading to Bridgestone Turanza, the ride comfort and quietness got noticeably better. The vehicle has been served at the local VW dealer for its scheduled maintenance. Being the most costly one so far, the DSG oil change ($500 every 40K). (Fun fact: a few months ago, I discovered that 'launch control' can be activated by switching off 'traction control' and pressing the brake and gas pedal simultaneously. Obviously, this feature was not included in the owner's manual :) 70k miles update: This vehicle is both my working and pleasure horse. After having reached the 70K miles mark, driving in all kinds of roads and driving conditions, I haven't experienced any issues at all. After the last service, I was told that the front brakes might need replacement soon. Not too bad after 70k miles of spirited driving ;)All in all, I'm looking forward to many more miles of driving enjoyment!
