Volkswagen Golf sportwagen problems

The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.
Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.
The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

Common Volkswagen Golf sportwagen problems
The Volkswagen Golf SportWagen has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners, as detailed below:
- Rear Coil Springs Fracture: This recall affects certain 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen, 2019 Jetta, 2015-2019 Golf, and 2018-2019 Tiguan vehicles. The rear coil springs may prematurely fracture, leading to a safety risk. Volkswagen will replace the rear axle coil springs free of charge for affected vehicles.
- Shift Lever Micro Switch Contacts Build-Up: This recall affects certain 2015-2019 GTI, 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 Golf, 2012-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen and 2011-2018 Jetta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, manual handbrake and keyless entry. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in "Park," leading to a safety risk.
- Fuel System Gasoline Leak: This recall affects certain front-wheel drive 2015-2020 Audi A3 Sedan, 2015-2019 Audi A3 Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, 2018 Golf Sportwagen GP, 2018-2019 Golf Sportwagen A7, 2015-2017 Golf Sportwagen, 2015-2020 Golf GTI, and 2015-2020 Golf A7 vehicles. Due to a problem with a suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system and possibly leak out of the charcoal canister. Dealers will replace the suction pump free of charge for affected vehicles.
- Steering Column Locking Anti-Theft Device: This recall affects certain 2015-2018 Volkswagen Golf and Golf Sportwagen vehicles. The build of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition while the vehicle shift lever is not in "Park," leading to a safety risk. Volkswagen will install an additional switch and circuit board free of charge for affected vehicles.
- Diesel Emissions Scandal: Volkswagen has admitted to using a defeat device on its supposedly 'clean diesel' vehicles to skirt around US emissions standards. This issue affects many Volkswagen models, including the Golf SportWagen.
- Noises and Leaks: Owners have reported issues with noises and leaks, including squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks. These issues have been reported for the 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen, with problems such as seals/drains on the sunroof failing, resulting in rain water draining into the trunk of the car, and front driver side suspension making a slight banging sound on some bumps in the road.
Is the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen a reliable car?
The probability of a repair being a severe or major issue is 11% for the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen, compared to an average of 11% for compact cars and 12% for all vehicle models. The average total annual cost for unscheduled repairs and maintenance across all model years of a vehicle.

- Summary: Left and Rear Coil Springs have snapped in half due to unreasonably dangerous defective manufacturing. This is consistent with the open recall for the exact condition: NHTSA's campaign number: 19V188000. However, VW North America refuses to consider my vehicle for the recall as my vin is not included. Although the snaps reflect a a dangerous manufacturing defect, VW incorrectly has determined the rear coil springs on my vehicle are not "in the batch" of defective coil springs.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-26
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-07
- VIN: 3VW717AU7JM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The clutch master cylinder failed at less than 37,000 miles and is not covered under the manufacturer's standard (for 2018 models) 72,000 mile warranty. I had to spend $500+ to replace the part at an independent mechanic. Fluid levels were fine and there were no leaks. Just a faulty part. I have owned cars with a manual transmission for almost 40 years and never once had to replace any clutch components, including in cars with well over 100,000 miles on them. It was a potentially dangerous event. I depressed the clutch pedal to put it in gear and the pedal sank to the floor. I couldn't get the car in gear. I couldn't restart the car. Fortunately I was on a side street not too far from home. I was able to pull up the clutch pedal and pump some pressure back into the system and drive home. I can only imagine how scary and unsafe this would have been if I had been stopped on a highway.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-25
- VIN: 3VWCA7AU2FM
- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: The emissions modification calibration by Volkswagen causes the coolant to be exposed to elevated temperatures due to higher exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) use to control emissions. These elevated higher temperatures degrade the coolant faster than designed and lead to precipitates falling out of solution in the factory filled G13 coolant. This causes buildup and deposits to form throughout the cooling system, particularly in the heater core which can block proper coolant flow & lead to coolant system failure, specifically of hoses associated with the heater core. When these fail the engine can over heat, and stop which causes loss of steering, propulsion and braking abilities. There is a similar problem on 2012 models with the TDI engine, which has been addressed but the 2015 models are being stranded on the roads creating a safety hazard to the drivers of the vehicles and other motorists on the road.

- VIN: 3VWC17AU7GM

- Summary: VW USA is offering no help in getting our recall work done. Their only suggestion is for us to work with our shipper. Our car is located in Italy because we are an active duty family stationed under orders at naval air station Sigonella. Our shipper has contacted VW Italy, and they refuse to help. The shipper also notes that they can’t ship the car anywhere anyways because the recall has to do with the fuel system. In effect, our car is now trapped in Italy, unable to be shipped off the continent. Perhaps NHTSA could persuade VW USA to perform our recall work here in Italy?

Vehicle year: 2015
I purchased my 2015 TDI SEL Sportwagen in California after the diesel scandal. I had been wanting one for a while, but I wasn't quite ready to part with my Outback. Unfortunately, Dieselgate hit just as I was ready to make the purchase, so I had to wait a year and a half. I had hoped to get the stick shift, but they were sold out due to the stock sellout, so I ended up with the DSG automatic, which is my second choice. The car has 20K miles on it now and it feels like a luxury vehicle for the price. The dash and instruments have a nice finish and the overall styling is great. I was able to get a discount for buying a tainted TDI, but that didn't bother me. I previously owned a 2000 Golf basic and it was great, so I was excited to finally get the TDI for its fuel economy. I've driven many TDIs in Europe while on holiday and it's always been a great experience. The SEL has lots of fun features, including park assist, ambiance lights in the foot area and on the door trim, a great stereo, back up camera, navigation, heated seats, heated mirrors, and more. The car feels upscale and has slick styling, a Fender stereo, side fog lights that turn on when making turns, lots of options to customize your car functions, good navigation, and even a CD player. However, there is no USB for the 2015 model. The car has lots of cargo space, with a false floor in the trunk that can be lowered to provide even more space. When I fold the back bench and the passenger seat fully, I can fit 2 windsurfing boards, 2 sails, a mast, and all the necessary gear I bring with me to the beach. The passage in the back seat is also great for skis or other long items. On the downside, the bucket seats look great and the black leatherette provides a good look, but they are a little too stiff and my butt starts to feel it after an hour of driving. I am 6'2'' and 180lbs, but I still have plenty of room all around. The front seat could be longer for more thigh support. Interestingly, the European version has a seat extender and lumbar massager, but it seems like they always skimp on the US market. However, in the summer, the leatherette becomes hot and soft, making it feel like sitting on a melting hot plastic. Since it's not real leather, there is a lot of friction when sliding in and out of the seats. Additionally, there is very little legroom in the rear. But let's move on to the serious stuff. My TDI had the first stage of the emission fixed, so I never had the virgin fun driving experience. I drove the car for a year and a half until the second fix came in. When the car came back, I felt like they castrated it. Maybe it's all in my head, but it feels like it has less torque and power on the freeway, especially above 60mph. However, I recently bought a 2015 Jetta TSI SE for my son, and it has tons of power next to my car. After the fix, the gas pedal feels hollow, and gas mileage has dropped. I used to get 51mpg on my way to work driving nicely at 60-65mph. Now, my average never goes above 43, even when driving like a grandma. I know it's still good, but not what it used to be. That is my biggest complaint, along with the seats and low profile tires with 18-inch rims, which give the car a super stiff and bumpy ride. One more thing, there is a significant lag from stop to go with the turbo, and going into reverse has a long pause, which is seriously annoying. Despite these issues, I still like my Wagen, but it has lost some of its allure. I may consider something with more power in the future, but the wagon market is almost non-existent in the US. The Outback is getting not-so-good reviews with its CVT and infotainment system. However, there is the new Volvo V90 Cross Country with a 2.0 engine at 315HSP! I test drove it, and it is seriously beautiful, sexy, capable, and super expensive! Finally, in my world with two kids in private college, the starting price is around 52K. But let me tell you, this car has everything, including a huge moon roof and unbelievably spacious seats unlike any other car! Cheers.

Vehicle year: 2019
This car is extremely well-built and solid. It's a sporty, fun car to drive with good acceleration thanks to the turbo stratified injection. The car has lots of cargo room, a great radio, and excellent fuel economy. I think it's a wonderful car that's worth twice the asking price. Even after five years, this car has exceeded my expectations. It gets great fuel mileage (averaging 40+ mpg on the highway) and still has plenty of power when you engage the turbo. The only negative thing I've experienced is that my headlights have small cracks, but that's not the car's fault. Unfortunately, the dealer didn't cover it under warranty and I suspect it was caused by someone backing into my car at the dealership. Despite this, I've had no other problems with the car and I'm actually looking to purchase another 2018 Golf Sportwagen SE.

I'm thrilled to share that I recently purchased my third manual transmission VW wagon! Since I needed all-wheel drive, I assumed I would have to upgrade to the All Track. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the standard TSI model also offers all-wheel drive as '4 motion', along with a six-speed manual transmission. While it may not be as powerful as my previous TDI, this 2019 4 Motion 6 speed manual transmission is still peppy and handles great! Additionally, the tornado red color is stunning and a refreshing change from my previous white and black models.

I compared prices online and made sure to choose a dealer who performed all safety checks and maintenance on the car. I also verified that the tires were in good condition, the oil and other fluids had been changed, the battery was still in good condition, and the brakes were good. Additionally, I ensured that all emission updates met current requirements, as some of these Diesel cars might have been sitting outside for years before being picked up by a dealer. I asked the dealer what they had to do to the vehicle before selling it. Although I may have missed some maintenance that needs to be looked at, I hope this information helps. I did not purchase from a private party, so I cannot verify if all the emission updates have been performed.

This car is amazing! It's a sports car with a work horse heart, which means I can use it to haul everything I need. Plus, if I add a roof rack, it's like having a pickup truck! It handles great, takes curves fast, and accelerates like a dream thanks to its super DSG transmission perfectly matched to the engine. I think you'll really enjoy it. In fact, I recently averaged over 38 MPG in a 60 mile highway trip this week!

It's a good car overall, although there have been some quality and reliability issues. I had to bring the car to the dealer for three separate repairs before I hit 10,000 miles, which was a bit frustrating. However, the ride is excellent (when the car isn't vibrating), the interior is great, and the seats are really comfortable. The engine is alright, but the transmission can struggle a bit at speeds between 20 and 60 mph. Overall, it's a decent car that has some room for improvement.

Our 2016 Golf Sportwagen is a great car with good performance, decent mileage, and great cargo and convenience. However, we have unfortunately experienced some issues with the car's electrical system. Over the past four years, we have had six major electrical failures, which have left us stranded on four occasions. We have also had to replace the keys due to a range issue, and the battery has drained completely on several occasions due to a series of electrical glitches. Additionally, we have experienced issues with the tires grinding against the alloy wheel rims, which has produced a constant variable rubbing sound. Despite these issues, we have found our VW dealership to be helpful and accommodating. We hope that VW will continue to improve their engineering and address these issues in future models.

As owners of a much beloved 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI, we carefully considered purchasing another VW. After evaluating many options, we decided on a new 2016 Golf Sportwagen TSI as our second vehicle. We found the Golf Sportwagen to be a strong contender, with a more responsive engine, superior transmission, smoother and quieter ride, more controlled handling and braking, better interior and exterior fit and finish, and a slightly higher seat position and more interior and storage space. The cargo space is cavernous, and significantly larger than most comparable small SUV's. Towing capacity with an added hitch has also proven excellent. We effortlessly drove 1,500 miles this fall with a 1,600 lb teardrop trailer over mountainous western terrain, and we hardly noticed we were towing anything. Despite these positives, however, we have encountered more reliability issues with the Sportwagen than with any car we have owned in 20 years. We have had three major electronic defects we have had to deal with, including the failure of the instrument cluster, and two occasions where the electronic ignition simply died with no explanation. Our local dealership handled the troubleshooting and repairs poorly, requiring multiple return trips to get it right. Now, the radio/info system is failing, with all audio functions periodically cutting out 2-3 times a week. Bluetooth and voice controls are also unreliable, and the speed-dependent volume control doesn't work at all. Mechanically, shifting is not as smooth as it was initially and there is excessive roll forward/back after the car is placed in park. We have also had the car in several times for a speed-dependent rubbing noise that sounds like the early stages of a wheel bearing failure, but they insist nothing is wrong. It seems like you've been experiencing some issues with your car. The team at VW would like to help you resolve these problems as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Please let us know how we can assist you further.

It's understandable to feel skeptical about the Golf wagon, especially with some of the issues that have been reported. However, it's important to note that many of these problems are not unique to VW and are common among other manufacturers using similar technology. That being said, it's always a good idea to be prepared for any potential expenses, such as addressing Direct Injection carbon issues. It's also worth noting that some quality control issues have been reported, but these are not necessarily indicative of the overall quality of the car. If you're considering the 4 motion, keep in mind that the fuel economy may not be as good as you'd expect for a small car. Additionally, some drivers have reported discomfort with the seats on longer trips. If you're looking for a more affordable option, you may want to consider the older Golf or Jetta wagons with the 2.5 engines, which have been praised for their reliability and overall quality.

We experienced a disappointing ride due to the corrugated surface.
