Volkswagen Golf sportwagen problems

The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.
Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.
The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

Common Volkswagen Golf sportwagen problems
The Volkswagen Golf SportWagen has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners, as detailed below:
- Rear Coil Springs Fracture: This recall affects certain 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen, 2019 Jetta, 2015-2019 Golf, and 2018-2019 Tiguan vehicles. The rear coil springs may prematurely fracture, leading to a safety risk. Volkswagen will replace the rear axle coil springs free of charge for affected vehicles.
- Shift Lever Micro Switch Contacts Build-Up: This recall affects certain 2015-2019 GTI, 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 Golf, 2012-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen and 2011-2018 Jetta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, manual handbrake and keyless entry. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in "Park," leading to a safety risk.
- Fuel System Gasoline Leak: This recall affects certain front-wheel drive 2015-2020 Audi A3 Sedan, 2015-2019 Audi A3 Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, 2018 Golf Sportwagen GP, 2018-2019 Golf Sportwagen A7, 2015-2017 Golf Sportwagen, 2015-2020 Golf GTI, and 2015-2020 Golf A7 vehicles. Due to a problem with a suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system and possibly leak out of the charcoal canister. Dealers will replace the suction pump free of charge for affected vehicles.
- Steering Column Locking Anti-Theft Device: This recall affects certain 2015-2018 Volkswagen Golf and Golf Sportwagen vehicles. The build of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition while the vehicle shift lever is not in "Park," leading to a safety risk. Volkswagen will install an additional switch and circuit board free of charge for affected vehicles.
- Diesel Emissions Scandal: Volkswagen has admitted to using a defeat device on its supposedly 'clean diesel' vehicles to skirt around US emissions standards. This issue affects many Volkswagen models, including the Golf SportWagen.
- Noises and Leaks: Owners have reported issues with noises and leaks, including squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks. These issues have been reported for the 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen, with problems such as seals/drains on the sunroof failing, resulting in rain water draining into the trunk of the car, and front driver side suspension making a slight banging sound on some bumps in the road.
Is the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen a reliable car?

- Summary: Left and Rear Coil Springs have snapped in half due to unreasonably dangerous defective manufacturing. This is consistent with the open recall for the exact condition: NHTSA's campaign number: 19V188000. However, VW North America refuses to consider my vehicle for the recall as my vin is not included. Although the snaps reflect a a dangerous manufacturing defect, VW incorrectly has determined the rear coil springs on my vehicle are not "in the batch" of defective coil springs.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-26
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-07
- VIN: 3VW717AU7JM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The clutch master cylinder failed at less than 37,000 miles and is not covered under the manufacturer's standard (for 2018 models) 72,000 mile warranty. I had to spend $500+ to replace the part at an independent mechanic. Fluid levels were fine and there were no leaks. Just a faulty part. I have owned cars with a manual transmission for almost 40 years and never once had to replace any clutch components, including in cars with well over 100,000 miles on them. It was a potentially dangerous event. I depressed the clutch pedal to put it in gear and the pedal sank to the floor. I couldn't get the car in gear. I couldn't restart the car. Fortunately I was on a side street not too far from home. I was able to pull up the clutch pedal and pump some pressure back into the system and drive home. I can only imagine how scary and unsafe this would have been if I had been stopped on a highway.
Volkswagen Golf sportwagen 2015
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-25
- VIN: 3VWCA7AU2FM
- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: The emissions modification calibration by Volkswagen causes the coolant to be exposed to elevated temperatures due to higher exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) use to control emissions. These elevated higher temperatures degrade the coolant faster than designed and lead to precipitates falling out of solution in the factory filled G13 coolant. This causes buildup and deposits to form throughout the cooling system, particularly in the heater core which can block proper coolant flow & lead to coolant system failure, specifically of hoses associated with the heater core. When these fail the engine can over heat, and stop which causes loss of steering, propulsion and braking abilities. There is a similar problem on 2012 models with the TDI engine, which has been addressed but the 2015 models are being stranded on the roads creating a safety hazard to the drivers of the vehicles and other motorists on the road.

- VIN: 3VWC17AU7GM

- Summary: VW USA is offering no help in getting our recall work done. Their only suggestion is for us to work with our shipper. Our car is located in Italy because we are an active duty family stationed under orders at naval air station Sigonella. Our shipper has contacted VW Italy, and they refuse to help. The shipper also notes that they can’t ship the car anywhere anyways because the recall has to do with the fuel system. In effect, our car is now trapped in Italy, unable to be shipped off the continent. Perhaps NHTSA could persuade VW USA to perform our recall work here in Italy?

I've owned two of those. The first one was a TDI SE trim which I returned to VW under buyback. Then I went and bought a TDI SEL trim and I absolutely love it. The seats are way more comfortable than the SE trim. I still get around 45mpg on the highway and 35 in the city. The performance is great after the recall. This is the best car for long trips, it sips fuel and the performance is amazing thanks to the DSG transmission. Maintenance is also great, with 10k oil changes for just $59 at my dealer (vs $300 for a diesel BMW!). I put 50K on my first one with only one issue (battery swapped) and I hope my second one will be just as reliable.

I purchased my Sportwagen diesel just three weeks before the diesel scandal was announced. Despite this, I was able to get an amazing deal on both my trade-in and the new car. The car itself is fantastic! It has plenty of room for my kids and dogs, and handles beautifully on the road. The turning is incredibly smooth, unlike anything I've ever experienced before. The mileage on diesel fuel is outstanding, with an average of 40 mpg in the city and 50 mpg on the highway. This has resulted in a significant drop in my fuel costs. Although I have experienced some issues with the 'pulse' feature on the third brake, which routinely shows up as broken on my info screen, I still love this car and it completely fulfills my needs. Even though I have considered the buyback option, I cannot find another car that I love as much as this one. I feel very fortunate to have this diesel car, which has proven to be reliable even during the harsh Wisconsin winters. Overall, I am 100% satisfied with my little wagon!

Vehicle year: 2015
It's a shame that there are only two consumer reviews on Edmunds at this point, considering how great this car really is. I have the S trim, and now there's an SEL and SE review. Even though I wasn't willing to buy up to the SE trim at this time, I still find a lot of value in the car even at the S level. Earlier in the year, I had bought the 2015 Golf TSI SE, but I kept finding that with 3 kids and a dog and road travel, the extra space was needed. However, in owning the SE, things like the sunroof, Fender audio, heated seats, RSWs, etc. were all nice, but what I really liked was how solid and quiet the Golf was to drive. It made driving easy, and that's what opened me up to try the S trim. I still give it a 5-star rating and two thumbs up, even though there are four things I've asked myself about this car. First, why no USB port? It's just weird. I mean, they don't even have an iPhone 5 adapter. If there's no USB port, then they should send an inventory of adapters to dealers to outfit each car. Second, why no heated seats on the S trim, when even the base Jetta with cloth has them? I live in Colorado and use the heated seats from time to time. Now I'll have to pay $450 for a local shop to install them (with most of the cost in labor). Third, (and this applies to all Golfs in general) why not just put a soft plastic upper panel on the back seat passenger doors and match up the quality of everywhere else in the car? My prior JSW had that. Lastly, I've heard the reasons why they dropped the IRS from the GSW and Golf TDI to accommodate emissions, and I find it tuned okay, but it just bothers me when I think about it. Update: This is still a great car!

The VW Golf Sportwagen TSI is a fantastic vehicle that offers the space of a station wagon and the driving experience of a car. The TSI gasoline turbo charged engine provides excellent power, acceleration, and gas mileage. The SE model is loaded with great features and upgrades, making it a wonderful vehicle for local driving, shopping, vacations, and carrying your furry friend. Make sure to check it out at your local VW dealer. (Update 7/19/19) The vehicle has been serving us well, having just turned 23,000 miles after 2 1/2 years. We have not experienced any mechanical problems, just routine OFL service performed at 10,000 mile intervals. On trips, we have been able to reach fuel mileage of 31-32 mpg. The vehicle has ample power and runs smoothly. We are enjoying the large sunroof when open, and the ample interior space makes it a great vehicle for family use.

Update March 2023: We are still very pleased with the Golf Sportwagen and we hope that VW will consider including an electric version in its future plans for the North American market. At 7 1/2 years old, it still looks great and runs great. It is important to note that all VW/Audi cars require scrupulous maintenance and are very particular about the type and quality of vital fluids used. Unlike a Toyota that can withstand abuse, it is important to take care of your VW/Audi and not skimp on maintenance. Our favorite car is still our 2001 Passat wagon, but the Sportwagen comes close with its superior acceleration and fuel efficiency, despite having reduced rear and side visibility and cargo space. Oil changes on the Sportwagen are a breeze with a 32mm socket, a torque wrench, and a special screwdriver-like tool for the drain plug -- no need to drop the splash shield. We have read the complaints in the negative reviews, and we caution that the main reason we had to retire our 24-year-old 1996 Audi A4 was due to a series of electrical failures and the feeling that we could no longer trust it not to strand us somewhere. Therefore, we are not surprised that some folks were complaining about electrical issues with their Sportwagens. However, so far, after almost two years of ownership, we have encountered no issues. As for erratic shifting of the automatic at low speeds, putting it in Tiptronic/manual mode nicely addresses that. It took a little practice with the gas pedal and the shifter, but we can now drive it very smoothly, even at low speeds. The complaints may arise from the relatively high speed of the 2-3 shift, which might cause it to hunt between second and third at typical local neighborhood / urban speeds around 25mph. My wife and I are huge fans of sport sedan based wagons, which, as you know, are getting harder and harder to find. We are holding onto our 2001 Passat wagon as long as we can (so far, so good), and we hope to keep this one for 20 years as well.I completely disagree with VWoA's decision to discontinue the Golf Sportwagen in the North American market, as it is a great car. Although wagons are a niche market, their owners are fiercely loyal. I am still driving and happy with the same two cars, and I would love to see VW/Audi bring back this large compact/small midsize sport sedan-based station wagon body configuration in an electric version. If they did, it might convince me to update.

I've owned several Volkswagen models over the years, including the original Beetle, a Fox, a Jetta, two Passats (wagon and sedan), a Golf four-door, and the Golf Sportwagen. While I appreciated the European driving experience that the Golf Sportwagen offered, I found it to be the least enjoyable VW I've owned. The US version of the car features a transmission that shifts very roughly, making a loud thump noise when downshifting at low speeds. Additionally, it upshifts too quickly, which robs the 1.8 turbo engine of its decent power. The low RPMs also cause the engine to transmit vibrations into the cabin, along with an unpleasant low drone. I was disappointed to learn from the dealer that this is how the car was designed. The build quality was also subpar, with issues like the back-up camera breaking at less than 30,000 miles and a sunroof leak that took three months to fix. The service from my local VW dealer was also unsatisfactory, with high servicing costs that made me question my decision to buy the car. While I've heard that Volkswagen models can be hit or miss, unfortunately, the Golf Sportwagen was a miss for me. If you're considering buying a used VW, be sure to do your research and proceed with caution.Especially consider a base version with a manual transmission for your Golf Sportwagen. This will provide great value without the added cost of special features. If purchased in this specification, the only additional feature you may need is a backup camera.

I really appreciate blind spot monitors, especially when driving on a busy freeway. I have them on my Toyota Avalon and Mazda 3, and they work seamlessly. However, I have had some issues with the blind spot monitor on the VW Golf. The monitors are difficult to see, partly because they're tiny and partly because the lights are not bright enough, making it really difficult to see them in bright sunlight. Additionally, the turn signal lights are placed too close to the blind spot monitors, which can cause hesitation and make it unsafe to change lanes. I believe that VW should address these issues as soon as possible. I also find that the rear cross traffic alert is occasionally unreliable, which can be concerning. As for the adaptive cruise control, I have deactivated it because it can cause sudden deceleration even when there is ample space between vehicles. Overall, I believe that safety features are important, and I hope that VW can improve these features in the future.

As owners of a much beloved 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI, we carefully considered purchasing another VW. After evaluating many options, we decided on a new 2016 Golf Sportwagen TSI as our second vehicle. We found the Golf Sportwagen to be a strong contender, with a more responsive engine, superior transmission, smoother and quieter ride, more controlled handling and braking, better interior and exterior fit and finish, and a slightly higher seat position and more interior and storage space. The cargo space is cavernous, and significantly larger than most comparable small SUV's. Towing capacity with an added hitch has also proven excellent. We effortlessly drove 1,500 miles this fall with a 1,600 lb teardrop trailer over mountainous western terrain, and we hardly noticed we were towing anything. Despite these positives, however, we have encountered more reliability issues with the Sportwagen than with any car we have owned in 20 years. We have had three major electronic defects we have had to deal with, including the failure of the instrument cluster, and two occasions where the electronic ignition simply died with no explanation. Our local dealership handled the troubleshooting and repairs poorly, requiring multiple return trips to get it right. Now, the radio/info system is failing, with all audio functions periodically cutting out 2-3 times a week. Bluetooth and voice controls are also unreliable, and the speed-dependent volume control doesn't work at all. Mechanically, shifting is not as smooth as it was initially and there is excessive roll forward/back after the car is placed in park. We have also had the car in several times for a speed-dependent rubbing noise that sounds like the early stages of a wheel bearing failure, but they insist nothing is wrong. It seems like you've been experiencing some issues with your car. The team at VW would like to help you resolve these problems as soon as possible. Please let us know how we can assist you with the vibration/hum and front collision avoidance system. We understand that fuel efficiency is important to our customers, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by the low mpg. We appreciate your loyalty to VW and hope to have the opportunity to improve your experience with our brand in the future.

It's a good car overall, although there have been some quality and reliability issues. I had to bring the car to the dealer for three separate repairs before I hit 10,000 miles, which was a bit frustrating. However, the ride is excellent (when the car isn't vibrating), the interior is great, and the seats are really comfortable. The engine is alright, but the transmission can struggle a bit at speeds between 20 and 60 mph. Overall, it's a decent car that has some room for improvement.

The car looks great and has excellent highway mpg, but unfortunately, we've experienced some issues with it. We've had some electrical problems that have been frustrating, and we've had to take it to the repair shop more often than we'd like. One time, the entire steering wheel went dead, including the airbag. We've also noticed some strange things happening when we leave the car sitting for a while, which drains the battery. While it's not what we expected from a two-year-old car with only 19k miles, we're hopeful that these issues can be resolved soon.
