2016 Volkswagen Golf sportwagen problems
The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.
Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.
The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-31
- VIN: 3VWC17AU7GM
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: VW USA is offering no help in getting our recall work done. Their only suggestion is for us to work with our shipper. Our car is located in Italy because we are an active duty family stationed under orders at naval air station Sigonella. Our shipper has contacted VW Italy, and they refuse to help. The shipper also notes that they can’t ship the car anywhere anyways because the recall has to do with the fuel system. In effect, our car is now trapped in Italy, unable to be shipped off the continent. Perhaps NHTSA could persuade VW USA to perform our recall work here in Italy?
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-14
- VIN: 3VWC17AUXGM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: Despite settling a class action lawsuit re: moonroof leakage, VW refuses to cover the same repair for my VW Golf Sportwagen. I have the same issue but could not participate in the class action suit due to mileage. I routinely have to bail 1/2 - 1 gallon of water out the spare tire area if its been raining. Water now also collects in the footwell behind the driver's seat/in front of my child's seat. The bolts affixing the seatbelts to the floor are rusted and there is mold under the carpet. The car now has electrical issues, including the alarm no longer sounding when I am reversing and someone is approaching in my blind spot. In addition, when the weather has been wet, the back up camera does not work and, mid trip, the car alarms sound, indicating the car must be serviced and the brakes and airbags are not working. These problems disappear after a few days of dry weather.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
- VIN: 3VWC17AU4GM
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The fuel system is completely shot, with fuel leaking from the gas tank after a ride once and pressure building up in the gas tank. Gas pumps click off after only putting one to two gallons in the tank, despite the tank being nearly empty. Mechanic replaced Evap canister and fuel suction pump, seemingly solving the problem temporarily only for them to resurface. Fuel leaking from the tank while driving severely risks my safety, as it is possible that pressure could cause the fuel to leak onto the engine, thus causing rapid combustion of the vehicle. The dealership has not assessed the problem, only a qualified mechanic has. It has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, but has been inspected by a mechanic. No warning lights or messages have appeared in relation to this problem.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-13
- VIN: 3VWC17AU5GM
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: The rear coil spring fractured and caused a suspension issue. This is the same issue as reported in NHTSA campaign number: 19V188000 covering the same vehicles built a few months after mine. The vehcile is being repaired now and the issue has been confirmed. The component has been inspected by a service technician and the issue has been confirmed. Parts have been retained for evidence. There were no warnings, messages or symptoms. VW has been notified, but confirmed this is not their issue to fix. This issue should result in an extended recall to cover the same vehcile, just earlier models, so there are no resulting accidents, injuries, or deaths.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-01
- VIN: 3VWC17AU4GM
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Car loses power due to clogged wastegate actuator and EPC light turns on and off. This has been confirmed by 2 different service centers. I have seen several cases of people saying they had the same problem which requires you to replace the entire turbo, which my car only has 67,000 miles. I have a 16 year old son who will drive my car and this could cause him an accident if he is not able to accelerate. This is clearly a faulty part as they've discontinued using the model of the original turbo.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-28
- VIN: 3VWC17AU3GM
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: May 27 and May 28: The car turned on the EPC and check engine lights while on parking mode and on. Started to loose power and didnt want to start again. Later on, the lights turned off and it started again. While trying to fill the fuel tank at the gasoline station it stopped and it was only half tank.(The system didnt allowed to continue). While driving in the highway, started to loose power and a strong smell of fuel was inside the car so the driver had to open all the windows to avoid an intoxication with emissions(as it seemed to be). When the driver got to the destination in the highway, near San Juan, the smell of fuel was so strong that had to turn off the car and call a tow truck because the return travel would be long and the smell of fuel was stronger… it seemed to be spilling fuel and it was not safe to drive the car back home. Tow truck carried the car home because the dealer was closed on Sunday. On monday 29, the car was towed again but from home to the Flagship dealer in Ponce, PR. In the dealer they say it doesnt “have anything” . It seems they didnt care about the hazzards being discussed. The dealer returned our car and insisted there wasnt a recall or issue to attend. As soon as the dealer returned the car we drove home and the fuel odor or emissions were perceived inmediately inside the car. The car was stopped at home and a fuel leak was visible on the road. We need help inmediately. It is a matter of safety and risks. Please advice us and help with this issue. It is my only car.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-14
- VIN: 3VWC17AU3GM
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The EPC light has been continuously coming on for almost a year. It has been taken to the dealership 5 times and they cannot fix it or find the cause of it. At times when driving it enters "limp mode". Other times it has acted like it was overheating. And twice it has completely shut down. The vehicle is now out of warranty and no fix has been put in place. The EPC light will still randomly come on. VW has not addressed or come up with cause for this very common issue on their vehicles.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-24

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-02
- VIN: 3VWC17AUXGM
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: My driver seat belt comes unbuckled when i'm driving. It's intermittent and random, and i'm very careful to lock in the belt and i pull on it before i start driving to make sure it's locked in, and it still comes undone. I then have to relock it while i'm driving, which is distracting, as well as worrisome that i am without a seatbelt until i can lock it again, especially if i'm on the freeway. I've taken it to my mechanic who drove the car and said the same thing happened to him several times while he was driving.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-19
- VIN: 3VWC17AU4GM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: In late summer (August 2022) I started seeing a warning but it would disappear so fast. Now it's popping up more: Yellow triangle appears. Engine is giving code# B116229 - "Selector lever park position lock switch Implausible signal" (mileage 104814 km). I originally received a recall notice like this and brought the car into the dealer. He said there was a VIN "Mix up" - something about the last two digits being reversed with another customer. Reading off my dash, this is my VIN [XXX] This sounds a lot like the "Shift Lever Micro Switch" recall which is a safety issue. Thank you INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
- VIN: 3VWC17AU4GM
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Dealer maintained 2016 VW Golf Sportwagen - coolant level kept getting low. Recent dealer visit indicated a leak in the thermostat housing. This seems to be a common issue with many such VWs, and in some cases other owners have reported multiple repeated failures of this housing. My car only has 66K miles and i haven't had any of my other cars have this issue over 25years of various car ownership.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-25
- VIN: 3vwc17au9gm
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: The passenger side rear coil spring snapped without any warning and with in normal highway and city street use with only 46,244 miles and 5 years of age. The was manufactured in August of 2015, was delivered in November of 2015, and the spring failed in the last week of June 2021. The vehicle is used on road and has had all maintenance done on time or early. I drove the vehicle on June 25th and when I was about 2 miles from home I slowed for an intersection and heard a clank sound from the rear of the vehicle, the remainder of the drive was uneventful. The next day when exiting our garage my wife and I heard a loud clanking sound. I test drove the car around the block and every turn, deceleration, and bump resulted in a clank from the back rear wheel area. The VW dealer confirmed the rear spring had snapped and also noted they had had a number of occurrences on MQB platform VWs and had a Tiguan (same chassis/platform) of similar age in the shop for the same reason. I drove slowly and on low roads to the dealer but it was clear the handling was compromised as it was not predictable in terms of both motions over bumps or when turning or reaction to steering inputs. I spoke with VW corporate and they confirmed an earlier recall on rear coil springs on VW Golf Sportwagens but that recall impacted the 2015. They were unable to assist with the repair but suggested I contact NHTSA. It is fortunate that the failure occurred when it did and not at highway speeds or severe weather. It is also fortunate no fragments of the spring impacted the tire or break components. I have owned many cars with significantly higher miles and managed armored and police vehicle fleets but have never had a car with so few miles have a spring snap.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: EXISTING NHTSA RECALL 69L2 BUT ON DIFFERENT MODEL YEAR - VW DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG AND HORN/STEERING WHEEL BUTTONS DISABLED. MY AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND MY HORN AND STEERING WHEEL BUTTONS BECAME DISABLED SIMULTANEOUSLY AS I WAS IN MOTION DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. NOW MY AIRBAG AND HORN/BUTTONS ARE NOT WORKING INCLUDING CRUISE CONTROL. VW RECALLED EARLIER-MODEL VEHICLES BUT THIS APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM THAT STILL HASN'T BEEN SOLVED AND AFFECTS MORE THAN JUST THE MODELS LISTED IN THE ORIGINAL RECALL. I CALLED VW CARE TO SEE IF MY VEHICLE WAS COVERED UNDER A CAMPAIGN OR EXTENDED WARRANTY. HOWEVER THE PERSON I SPOKE TO TOLD ME THAT MY CLOCK SPRING WAS NOT COVERED AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. THIS IS INFURIATING BECAUSE IT'S A KNOWN ISSUE THAT'S DISABLING MY AIRBAG AND HORN BUT VW IS REFUSING TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. JUDGING BY HOW MANY COMPLAINTS I'VE SEEN I AM DEFINITELY NOT ALONE. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS ~66K MILES. - Summary: I PURCHASED MY 2016 VW GOLF SPORTWAGEN IN 2019. SOON AFTER, THERE WAS A RAINSTORM, AND I REALIZED THE PANORAMIC SUNROOF WAS LEAKING HEAVILY ALONG THE BACK PANEL OF THE CAR. THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM HAD THE CAR FOR ABOUT A MONTH, AND WAS ABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, AS WELL AS REPLACE THE HEADLINER. VW ISSUED A RECALL ON THE FRONT SUNROOF DRAINS IN 2020, IN WHICH THEY MODIFIED THE DRAINS. ONCE THIS WAS PERFORMED, THE SUNROOF BEGAN LEAKING AGAIN. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR SENSORS, WHICH WERE DAMAGED DUE TO WATER DAMAGE. THIS REPAIR WAS EXTREMELY COSTLY, BUT I WAS TOLD I COULD DO NOTHING ABOUT IT, BECAUSE VW WON'T COVER COSTS FROM FAULTY PARTS. I AM NOW LOOKING AT ANOTHER COSTLY REPAIR OF THE SUNROOF, AND A SECOND HEADLINER REPLACEMENT, WITHIN 2 YEARS OF OWNING THIS VEHICLE.

2016 Volkswagen Golf sportwagen recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2016 Volkswagen Golf sportwagen.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain front-wheel drive 2015-2020 Audi A3 Sedan, 2015-2019 Audi A3 Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, 2018 Golf Sportwagen GP, 2018-2019 Golf Sportwagen A7, 2015-2017 Golf Sportwagen, 2015-2020 Golf GTI, and 2015-2020 Golf A7 vehicles. Due to a problem with a suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system and possibly leak out of the charcoal canister.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the suction pump, free of charge. Final owner notification letters for Audi owners were mailed on July 25, 2024. Final owner letters for VW owners were mailed on August 13, 2024. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's numbers for this recall are VW: 20UF/Audi: 20YF. Vehicles that were previously recalled under 16V-647 will need to have the new remedy completed. This recall expands and replaces previous recall number 16V-647.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2016 Audi TT Roadster, TT Coupe, S3 Sedan, R8 Coupe, A3 Sedan, A3 Etron, A3 Cabriolet, 2016 Golf Sportwagen, Golf R, Golf GTI, Golf A7, and E Golf vehicles. During air bag deployment, the front passenger air bag may explode or deploy improperly.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking occupants, resulting in serious injury or death. An improper air bag deployment may not properly restrain the occupant, increasing their risk of injury in a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the front-passenger air bag module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 16, 2022. Owners may contact Volkswagen's customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Audi's customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69DY and 61C1.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: STEERING:COLUMN LOCKING:ANTI-THEFT DEVICE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Volkswagen Golf and Golf Sportwagen vehicles. The build of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition while the vehicle shift lever is not in "Park." As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
- Consequence: Removing the key while the shift lever is in a position other than "Park" increases the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board, free of charge. The recall began March 19, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 37L5.

Positive 2016 Volkswagen Golf sportwagen car reviews

I bought this car used a year ago with 28k miles and it now has 32k. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus, I haven't been able to take it out as much as I would like. On the bright side, I have found that the car's fuel efficiency is better than the official MPG ratings. On highway drives through California's hilly terrain, I have often exceeded 40MPG, while in the city, it is more in line with EPA estimates (24-25). The engine is very responsive, although it struggles a bit during high-speed passing maneuvers on inclines where you may need to drop two gears to get a significant speed change. However, I love that the engine has enough torque to maintain 5th gear on any uphill at 60-75 mph. The car is also very quiet, making for a comfortable ride. Speaking of comfort, the seats are accommodating, although they could use more lumbar support. The engine heats up quickly, which is great for warming up the car. The rear seat is also quite comfortable. The entertainment system works well most of the time, but sometimes it refuses to start Android Auto, and you have to unplug and replug your phone. Additionally, it doesn't perform well in hot weather and may malfunction if the dashboard gets too hot. The AC is fine, but not the most powerful. The only real downside to this car is the manual transmission. As someone who was born in Europe and has only driven manuals before moving to the US, I have plenty of experience with them, but I find this one difficult to shift smoothly. The engine also stalls easily, and the 2nd gear often grabs in the rear lock when downshifting because the spring that prevents accidentally going into reverse is not strong enough. Overall, the only thing that really bothers me is the 3rd to 2nd gear shifting grab issue, which I feel I'll learn to adjust to, but it proves to be a surprisingly difficult task! Other than that, I like the car.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2016 TSI after 6 years! It sounds like it has a lot of great features, including comfortable seating and plenty of cargo space. I'm also happy to hear that you're having fun driving on twisty roads with the paddle shifters. It's great to have a car that can handle both the freeway and the mountains. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

I've driven many VW's, but this one is by far the best. The comfort, practicality, ride, and features for the money are outstanding. The new chassis and engine design is a huge step forward. When driving from Florida to Michigan and back, I can always break 44 mpg on at least one leg if traffic is moving. On these trips, I average about 40 mpg overall. Around town, 26 mpg is normal. It's unbelievable for a peppy gas engine burning regular grade. The cargo space is more useful than smaller SUV's. Most people really don't need to push a big SUV through the wind. This small aero profile cuts through the wind with minimal resistance, therefore providing great fuel economy. By the way, these new engines don't require timing belts to be serviced. My car is very quiet on the highway, and the ride is much better than an SUV. Even a leather steering wheel and shift paddles for $24K. VW means value again. Update Feb 2019 49,000 miles: The car is like new, with no rattles, and the original Bridgestones still have lots of miles left. It's an incredible car value.

It sounds like you've found the perfect car! The cargo space is great and it's comfortable to ride in. Plus, the tornado red color is just perfect. I'm so glad you love it!

We experienced a disappointing ride due to the corrugated surface.

The wiring and heat shield of the car are covered in a plant-based product that unfortunately attracts small animals due to its tastiness. We have had to bring the car in twice for this issue. Although VW does not consider this a warranty issue, the dealer has suggested coating the parts in a toxic material, which is not an ideal solution. It is important to note that this is a known issue. We recommend considering alternative options before purchasing this car.

The Golf Sportswagen experienced a catastrophic engine failure due to a malfunctioning turbo. The cost of replacing the turbo was $15.5K on a $9K car. The dealer has reported seeing numerous turbo failures and therefore, it is not recommended to purchase one.

Hey there! Have you heard about the latest issue with VW? Unfortunately, there's been a problem with their water pump made out of plastic that tends to fail after 60,000 miles. Even though a class action lawsuit was filed in May 2021, VW won't cover the issue under warranty or provide a discount to the $1,400 repair bill. It's a bummer that the replacement part is also made of plastic, so it will eventually fail too. Hang in there!
