2002 Audi S4 problems
The Audi S4 is the high performance variant of Audi's compact executive car A4. The original Audi S4, built from 1991 until 1994, was a performance-oriented version of Audi's 100 saloon/sedan. All subsequent S4s since 1997 have been based on the Audi A4; and as the A4 has evolved from one generation to the next, so has the S4.
Like its regular A4 counterpart, all S4 variants have had longitudinally oriented, front-mounted engines. All versions of the S4 have their transmission mounted immediately at the rear of the engine in a longitudinal orientation, in the form of a transaxle, and like all Audi "S" cars, are only available as standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) system, using a Torsen-based centre differential system. A more powerful internal combustion engine, larger upgraded brakes, firmer suspension, larger wheels, and distinctive sheetmetal, styling clues and badging have always been amongst the many upgrades the S4 receives over its mainstream 100 and A4 siblings. In markets where the even higher-performance Audi RS 4 is not offered, the S4 is the top-of-the-line trim of the A4 family.
A single turbocharged 2.2-litre inline five-cylinder powered the original C4 version, and a 2.7-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine was found in the B5 generation. The B6 and B7 versions shared a common 4.2-litre V8 engine, the first time that a V8 engine was placed in a compact executive car, placing it in direct competition with the BMW M3 (3.2 L inline 6) and Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG (3.2-litre supercharged V6). The B8 generation uses a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine and competed with the BMW 335i, BMW 335i/340i xDrive, and Mercedes-Benz C350. The current B9 generation is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine, with rivals including the BMW M340i xDrive and Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG/Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC.
All versions of the S4 have been manufactured at Audi's plant in Ingolstadt, Germany; they are, or have been available as a four-door five-seat saloon and a five-door five-seat Avant (Audi's name for an estate car/station wagon) body styles since the model's inception in 1991. A two-door four-seat Cabriolet (convertible) S4 variant was introduced as part of the B6 and B7 generation A4 lineups. The B8 Cabriolet has now been built off the A5 coupe body style and the "S" variant is marketed under the Audi S5 nameplate.

Common 2002 Audi S4 problems
The Audi S4, specifically the 2002 model, has been noted for several common problems by its owners. These issues range from engine and transmission problems to suspension and electrical concerns.
- Turbocharger Failure: The B5 S4's turbocharger is another common source of problems. Turbocharger failure can be caused by several factors, including worn bearings, damaged seals, and issues with the wastegate actuator. Turbocharger failure can result in a significant loss of power and can also lead to engine damage if left unaddressed.
- Failed Thermostat: A failed thermostat is another common problem with the 2002 Audi S4. A faulty thermostat can lead to overheating, which can cause severe engine damage. Symptoms of a failed thermostat include the engine running hotter than normal, the temperature gauge fluctuating, and the car taking longer than usual to warm up.
- Premature Brake Wear: The 2002 Audi S4 is also known for premature brake wear. This problem can be caused by several factors, including aggressive driving, worn brake pads, and warped brake rotors. Premature brake wear can lead to decreased braking performance and can also result in more frequent brake repairs.
- Suspension Bushings: Another common problem with the 2002 Audi S4 is worn suspension bushings. Suspension bushings are designed to absorb vibrations and reduce noise, but they can wear out over time. Worn suspension bushings can lead to decreased handling and stability, and they can also result in increased tire wear.
- Electrical Problems: The 2002 Audi S4 is also known for various electrical problems. These issues can range from malfunctioning sensors to blown fuses and faulty wiring. Electrical problems can be challenging to diagnose and can lead to decreased performance and reliability.
In summary, the 2002 Audi S4 is known for several common problems, including engine oil leaks, turbocharger failure, failed thermostat, premature brake wear, worn suspension bushings, and electrical issues. These problems can lead to decreased performance, reliability, and safety, and they can also result in more frequent repairs and maintenance. If you are considering purchasing a 2002 Audi S4, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and to budget accordingly for potential repairs and maintenance.

2002 Audi S4 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2002 Audi S4.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2000-2001 Audi TT Coupe, TT Roadster, 2000-2002 A4, and S4 vehicles equipped with Non-Azide Driver Air Bag Inflators (NADI) that do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, possibly causing the air bag to deploy improperly in the event of a crash.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, the air bag may not properly protect the occupant, increasing the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the driver frontal airbag inflator with an alternative inflator, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 2, 2021. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69CJ.

Hey there! I noticed that you own a 2001 S4 with all the features except for the navigation system. That's awesome! I'm glad to hear that the car handles great, hugs the road, has terrific pick up, and is fun to drive. Thanks for sharing!
-
This is my first Audi and I absolutely love it! The power and handling are fantastic, making it the most fun car I have ever driven.
-
This car is so much fun to drive! The interior quality is fantastic. I bought it used with only 10,000 miles and have had no reliability issues so far. It's a unique car since there are very few S4's on the road. The only downside is the poor gas mileage, but other than that, I have no complaints. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in a used B5 S4.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you're in the market for a new vehicle to replace your 2001 GMC Yukon XL. After doing some research, it seems like you've considered a few different options, including the S4, 330xi, IS300, and Subaru Impreza WRX. From your description, it sounds like the S4 really stood out to you in terms of performance and smoothness. While the Impreza WRX was also impressive, it seems like the build quality of the S4 ultimately won you over. It's great to hear that you've had a positive experience with the dealer service, even if the oil changes are a bit infrequent. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with!

I did my homework and checked everything that came close to comparing. However, nothing matches the feel of driving this car. Its handling and design make it the perfect combination of luxury and power. If you haven't driven one, you couldn't possibly understand. Nothing else compares.

I am thrilled with the stock performance of this car. The price to performance and features ratio is unbeatable, and with some simple upgrades, this car can be made track ready. In snowy climates, this car is unmatched (B6 S4 and RS 6 aside). However, the quality, reliability, and dealer service can be challenging. Audi is known for electrical system problems, but I have also experienced issues with rattles, rivets popping, coolant pumps failing, and leather spalling. Unfortunately, the service quality and knowledge from dealers is poor. For example, Audi service does not feel it's necessary to rotate tires.

Audi should not offer an automatic transmission in a car like this, even the Tiptronic. The transmission has been problematic, and mine has been in the shop for three weeks after just 8,000 miles. The right rear brake makes an ear-shattering squeal, and the brakes are not suitable for even the smallest amount of ice or snow. Additionally, there are an unacceptable number of squeaks, rattles, and buzzes inside. While it may seem like a small point, two of the cup holders are located underneath the armrest, which is not very convenient. Overall, this vehicle is a source of extreme disappointment given its price.
