Volkswagen E-golf problems

The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.
Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.
The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

Common Volkswagen E-golf problems
The Volkswagen e-Golf, like any other vehicle, has faced some common issues, particularly in its earlier model years. Here are the most serious problems reported to RepairPal:
- Battery Management System Failures: Early models of the e-Golf had issues with the battery management system, which could lead to reduced range and performance. This problem was more prevalent in the 2015 model year, where several owners reported premature failures, leading to decreased range and overall performance.
- Charging Equipment Problems: Some owners have reported difficulties with the onboard charging system, including slow charging or charging failure. This issue can be frustrating for e-Golf owners, as it may hinder their ability to charge their vehicles efficiently and effectively.
- Infotainment Glitches: The e-Golf’s infotainment system has occasionally shown signs of malfunction, such as freezing or failure to boot up. This problem can affect the overall user experience and may require professional assistance to resolve.
- Brake System Concerns: A few reports have mentioned problems with the brake system, including noise and less responsive braking. This issue can impact the safety and reliability of the vehicle, and it is essential to address it promptly.
Despite these issues, Volkswagen has been proactive in addressing concerns through recalls and updates. Most of these problems were rectified in later models, and a well-maintained e-Golf from a trustworthy year should not exhibit these problems.
In addition to these issues, there are other common problems specific to the e-Golf. For example, the front-wheel bearing housings may have insufficient hardness, which can lead to a fracture of a wheel bearing housing and affect the directional control of the vehicle.
When buying a used e-Golf, it is crucial to check for recalls and ensure that any remedial work has been carried out before purchasing the vehicle. It is also essential to check the charging cables' condition, as replacing them can be expensive.
In terms of reliability, the Volkswagen e-Golf has generally proven to be a reliable electric vehicle, especially in the later model years. With improvements made over time, Volkswagen has addressed earlier issues, leading to a more dependable and well-rounded vehicle. However, it is essential to note that the e-Golf ranks 6th out of 28 Volkswagen models in terms of reliability, and regular maintenance and adherence to the manufacturer's guidelines can ensure a long-lasting and enjoyable driving experience.
How reliable is an e-Golf?
Reliability Survey, the e-Golf managed an impressive third-place finish out of 14 cars in the electric car category. As a brand, Volkswagen came 22nd out of 32 manufacturers featured.
What is the most common problem with the VW Golf?
VW Golf owners often search for information about the following problems.
- Fuel leaks. ...
- Blocked DPF. ...
- Stretched timing chain. ...
- DSG automatic gearbox issues. ...
- Foggy headlight lenses. ...
- Faulty handbrake. ...
- Electrical issues. ...
- Faulty crash sensors.
How many miles will an e-Golf last?
The VW e-Golf is an all-electric vehicle, running solely on power provided by a high voltage lithium ion battery. It has zero tailpipe emissions. Battery electric vehicles hold their range fairy well, and a used e-Golf can see available ranges between 40 and 195 miles.
Why is e-Golf discontinued?
While VW was quick to discontinue the e-Golf to switch its focus to ID-badged EVs, the model could be making a comeback in the future.

- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-01
- Date Complaint: 2021-12-22
- VIN: WVWPP7AU9FW
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: There is a known issue regarding a software update required to keep using the heat and cooling options on 2015 and older eGOLF models. Without this patch the heating and cooling of the vehicle will cease to operate. This includes the defogging capability for front and side windows in cold weather. On more than one occasion, I have had to wipe condensation from the windows while driving due to the failure of the heat pump. VW is aware of this software issue, but for vehicles out of the standard warranty will require a service diagnostic fee as well as a large repair cost for essentially a software upgrade. VW owns the diagnostic tools and software so there is no third party way to fix this issue. Affected vehicles should have the software update applied so visibility is not affected during driving. ON 9/17 3:20PM OR SO I WALKED OUT OF MY HOUSE AND SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING. I OPENED THE CAR DOOR AND HEARD AN ALERT AND THE DISPLAY SAID ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ERROR. I TRIED TURNING THE CAR ON AND OFF A FEW TIMES, NOTICED A LIGHT SMELL INSIDE THE CAR. I CONTINUED TO GET THE ELECTRICAL ERROR MESSAGE. I CALLED FOR VW ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE, TOOK THE CAR SEATS OUT, AND WHILE WAITING TO BE CONNECTED TO ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE I HEARD A SMALL POP SOUND AND A LITTLE SMOKE COME FROM THE HOOD AREA. MY HUSBAND CALLED 9-1-1. WITHIN ABOUT 5 MINUTES, WE HEARD MORE POPPING, SAW MORE SMOKE, AND THEN SAW FLAMES COMING FROM BENEATH THE CAR. A FIRE ENGINE ARRIVED AND WORKED ON PUTTING OUT THE FIRE. THE BATTERY HEATED/SMOKED/FLARED UP FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS UNTIL IT WAS DEEMED SAFELY OUT, AND FIREFIGHTERS LEFT. AS OF NOW, 3:30PM ON 9/18/2020, THERE ARE STILL FLARE UPS ON THE BATTERY AND IT IS UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. PLEASE HELP WITH THIS INVESTIGATION AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. - Summary: WHEN I WENT TO UNPLUG MY CAR IN MY GARAGE, THE CHARGING PORT WOULD NOT RELEASE THE CHARGER. WHEN I LOOKED IT UP ONLINE, I FOUND THAT MANY PEOPLE WHO OWNED 2015 E-GOLFS HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND THAT NONE OF THE ELECTRICAL RESETS WOULD WORK TO GET THE CHARGING PORT TO RELEASE THE CHARGING CABLE. (HTTPS://WWW.MYVWEGOLF.COM/FORUM/VIEWTOPIC.PHP?F=12&T=839&START=60) I TRIED ALL THE ELECTRICAL RESETS ANYWAY, BUT NOTHING WORKED. THE CAR WAS LOCKED DOWN, AND IT WOULD NOT EVEN LET ME PUT IT IN NEUTRAL, SO IT COULD NOT BE ROLLED ON TO A TOW TRUCK. THE TOW TRUCK DAMAGED THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF MY CAR TRYING TO GET IT OUT OF MY GARAGE AS A RESULT. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE LUTHER WESTSIDE VW DEALERSHIP IN MINNEAPOLIS, MN, AND THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME A DEDUCTIBLE EVEN THOUGH THE FREQUENCY OF THIS ISSUE POINTS TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. THE CHARGING PORT SHOULD BE RECALLED. PEOPLE ARE BEING STRANDED OVER AND OVER AGAIN BECAUSE VW WON'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS.

WHEN THIS OCCURS, THE EMERGENCY RELEASE PROCEDURE FOR THE VEHICLE WILL NOT RELEASE THE CHARGING CONNECTOR. THE CHARGING STATUS INDICATOR IS RED. EVENTUALLY CONNECTOR FINALLY RELEASES BUT AFTER EITHER HOURS OF WAITING OR SOMETIMES HITTTING THE CONNECTOR TO JAR IT FREE. DURING THE LOCKED CONDITION, THE VEHICLE IS NOT MOVEABLE - WILL NOT OPERATE. IF IT OCCURS AT A PUBLIC CHARGER, THE CAR IS LITERALLY TIED TO THE CHARGER AND BUILDING, UNABLE EVEN TO BE TOWED. - Summary: THE 2015 EGOLF LOCKS THE CHARGING CONNECTOR ONTO THE VEHICLE DURING CHARGING. THIS FUNCTIONALITY HAS TWO (AT LEAST) BENEFITS TO THE VEHICLE OPERATOR. ONE BENEFIT IS THAT THE (VERY EXPENSEIVE) CAR CHARGER'S POWER SUPPLY CAN'T EASILY BE STOLEN DURING CHARGING. A SECOND, SAFETY-CENTRIC, FUNCTION IS DERIVED BY NOT ALLOWING THE CHARGING PORT TO SEPARATE WHILE A CHARGE IS UNDERWAY PREVENTING POSSIBLE ELECTRICAL ARCS AND ELECTROCUTION. THE LOCKING MECHAISM INTERMITTENLY FAILS TO UNLOCK TOGETHER WITH THE REST OF THE DOORS AND FUNCTIONS ON THE VEHICLE. THIS HAS SEVERAL POTENTIAL DANGERS TO A VEHICLE OPERATOR. WHEH THE CHARGE CONNECTER WILL NOT RELEASE, THE VEHICLE WILL START AND MIGHT CREATE A SITUATION OF BEING STRANDED AT NIGHT IN A PUBLC CHARGING LOCATION. TJRTRRWERT---9RR-RRWPWRHIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME. TRYING TO RELEASE THE PLUG REQUIRES A STRONG LONG NARROW OBJECT (USUALLY METAL) BE INSERTED INTO THE SHIELDED AREA OF THE LOCKING MECHANISM. THE MECHANISM CAN SOMETIMES BE OVER-RIDDEN THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR. EVENAUALLY, THOUGH AN OOPERATOR IS GOING TO ACCIDENTALLY CONTACT ONE OF THE HIGH VOLTAGE TERMINALS.AND BE SERIOUSLY HURT OR KILLED. Vehicle year: 2016
This is my second car, which I use for driving around the city. Although it has a limited range, I can get 5.5-5.8 miles per kwh. As a retired driver, I always drive at or under the speed limit, and I turn off most consumer devices. What I appreciate most about the e-golf is that it is just like any other Golf. It doesn't draw attention to itself or scream 'hey, look at me, I'm a hybrid or electric car'. It's low-key, quiet, and stealthy, and most importantly, it drives like a German-engineered car, which is purposeful and perfect for city driving. If I need to go on a long-distance trip or do some major driving, I use my TDI. It's hard to describe how a German car drives compared to a Japanese car, but you can tell that it was designed to drive on Autobahns and in the German, Swiss, and French alps too. For all the mountains and canyons I drive in, I demand the way a German car drives, and I'm happy to pay the premium for it. Update after 6 months: It's still a great car for the city and short trips. The key is to charge it at home overnight, where filling up isn't so burdensome, and the cost of electricity is reasonable at $0.16 per kw. It's better than using public infrastructure for recharging, which is quite a bit more expensive and time-consuming, taking 2.5 to 3.25 hours each session. Forget about mooching electrons for free if you need a recharge; it's a business model doomed to failure. Provide your own infrastructure to charge, and you'll do fine. Update after 1 year of use: The battery life has dropped to about a 7% loss in maximum range. I'm averaging 6.0 miles per kwh with careful driving over the last 2000 miles. My route remains constant. What was 129 miles of range on a charge when new has dropped off to 120 miles now.Loss first started in the warm weather of May, and continues to drop in the heat of the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, CA. Odometer now reads 7750 on 10/19/16

Vehicle year: 2015
It's been almost 4 years since my last review and I still really like this car! It has been trouble-free, except for the radio volume control issue. The Golf (2015-on models, and generally all of them) is much larger than it looks and is an extremely versatile car for transport and even cargo. I checked out the 2019 models and they are even nicer with more bells and whistles, but unfortunately, VW, at least the Norm Reeves dealership, was not interested in making me a deal I would consider acceptable. My daughter got the new 2019 Leaf and comparing the two, the Golf is smaller on the outside, but larger on the inside. The new Leaf is a much better driving car than the previous Leaf model, but the Golf is still a much nicer driving car than even the new Leaf. The only downside is the range, with the Golf having 83 miles and the new Leaf having 150 miles. However, the Golf is an ideal car for around town and a 35-mile work commute range. Thankfully, there are still zero maintenance costs! Overall, I really like this car and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and versatile vehicle.I've been driving my car for a year and three months now and I'm enjoying it more every day. Since I work very close to home, one charge can keep me going for around two weeks with a few excursions to the shops and running errands. I find it to be the most practical of all the smaller, lower cost EVs out there because it's roomy, comfortable, has reasonable luggage capacity, and all the bells and whistles I could want. The 2017 model has better range, with 120 miles, which would let me drive to San Diego easily (if I spend the night to recharge)! Unfortunately, VW has decided to shut down their charging access, which is a very disappointing move. Anyway, I still like the car, especially since I work just a couple of miles from work and one charge lasts a couple of weeks. I tried a run to San Diego, and although I said in my earlier review that it would let me drive to San Diego easily, I was wrong! It just barely made it and was sniffing electrons to make a 75 mile trip. After an overnight and half a day charge, I drove home on eco mode with full regeneration settings and made it home with 3 miles to spare. The car still feels very tight, as it should with only 6500 miles on it, and has not needed any service other than a recall software update. The only problem I have is that the radio volume jumps up and down when I try to adjust it. However, everything else feels great and runs/works perfectly. Even after a 105-mile trip, I am still very happy with my decision to get this car. It is fun to drive, performs well when I want it to, and is amazingly economical both for energy usage and maintenance. As of 16th March 2022, 6 years later, I am still very happy with my decision! With only 16K miles, I replaced the original Bridgestone eco tires with Michelin Defender tires, which are much smoother, quieter, and actually handle better too! I did have an issue with the fuel cover door release solenoid, which stopped working and wouldn't open, but I was able to get it fixed for a reasonable price. Overall, I have had no other issues and I'm still really enjoying this very versatile, zippy, fast little hatchback with no gas price worries!

Vehicle year: 2015
In November 2018, I started using the e-Golf as my daily commuter, covering 75 miles round trip. I must say, it has been a fantastic car with minimal maintenance requirements and perfect road reliability. It is still fun to drive, and I never have to worry about pumping gas in the middle of the night or changing oil every few months! The only issue I have with this car is that VW insists on using the CARNET software interface to enable the time-delayed charging feature. It's a shame that they charge for this web interface once the free use period runs out. I wonder why VW set up the car to not support Level II chargers, which support time-delayed charge start times. Unfortunately, the dealer was either uninformed or unwilling to disclose this limitation.

When using the heater, it will drain the battery and reduce the range to around 60 miles. To improve my mileage, I turn off the heater and use regeneration stage 1 when I'm not accelerating in traffic. The only other high voltage battery usage is for the AC. If I need more time on the battery while driving around town, I slow down. That's why this car gives more miles in the city than on the highway. Currently, my only issue is the battery capacity, but I plan to buy a car with better battery capacity soon.

Congratulations on your new car! Although it may not have the best gas mileage for Los Angeles, it handles beautifully and can easily go over potholes and bumps. I understand your concerns about the distance and charging, but I'm sure with regular charging you'll be able to make it to work and back. Thank you for sharing your experience and I hope you continue to enjoy your car!

I purchased (leased) this car brand new and drove it for three years, putting approximately 36,000 miles on it. The car has many pros, including its amazing appearance, smooth driving experience, and excellent functionality. It possesses all the benefits of the Golf, such as exceptional handling, comfortable seating in both the front and back, a great view of the road, and a surprising amount of space for both passengers and cargo. You don't realize how well-balanced this car is until you compare it to almost any other car. The electric charging feature saved me a significant amount of money. Additionally, the car was very reliable. However, there were some cons. The range was a little over 80 miles in the summer and under 60 miles in the winter, even with the heater frequently turned off. As this was my only car, the limited range was a significant, lifestyle-altering issue. Fortunately, fast chargers began popping up in Portland during my ownership, which made life a bit easier. The charging cord melted, and it took several days to replace it under warranty. It was also frustrating to have to take the car for maintenance every 10K miles and get charged dealership fees for a simple electric check. About two years in, I attempted to sell the car, but the leasing agreement made the process extremely difficult, and I eventually gave up. VW Credit was a pain from beginning to end. At the end of the lease, they charged me a $350 fee for returning the vehicle, which felt like they had me by the neck from the time I signed the agreement. They were going to take advantage of me and didn't care if I would be a returning customer. If you meet the following conditions, I highly recommend this car: it is the second car in your household, you avoid VW Credit, you install a Level 2 Charger at your home, and you live in an area that is friendly towards electric vehicles. If you meet these conditions, I think you will LOVE this car!

I purchased an e-golf in 2016 as an early adopter. While the reviews were accurate in that it has limited range, it is still a good drive. I had confidence in the quality of the manufacturer, but unfortunately, I experienced several charging issues over the years. Thankfully, my local dealership resolved the problems under warranty after several visits. However, just after the 5-year warranty expired with only 30,000 miles on the clock, my e-golf stopped charging and the dealership recommended a $4,000 fix. Unfortunately, even after the fix, the car still won't charge. While electric cars are known for requiring little maintenance, it seems that they are not very serviceable. If you encounter problems, the dealerships may not know how to fix them and may ask you to pay for expensive replacement parts that may not even solve the problem. VW of America may not stand behind the quality of their vehicles, and if you have a problem car (even after just 5 years), you may have to keep throwing money at it or scrap it. It's important to be aware of these issues before purchasing an electric vehicle.

Despite encountering some issues with my car, I am confident that it will be resolved soon. After experiencing an electronic error, I had to have it towed to a dealer 3 miles away. Although the only person who could work on it quit, I remained optimistic and took it to a dealer in Denver. However, they were unable to diagnose the issue and sent it to Oxnard. While I am still waiting for updates on my car's status, I am confident that it will be resolved soon. I have come across similar complaints on forums, but I trust that my car will be fixed and I will be able to sell it.
