Common 2019 Toyota Tundra problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2019 Toyota Tundra, several common problems have been reported:

  • Excessive Oil Consumption: Another common complaint involves excessive oil consumption, particularly with the 5.7L V8 engine. Toyota engines are known to consume more oil than other brands to protect internal components. Owners are advised to check the oil regularly and top it off as needed.
  • Damaged Paint: Some Toyota Tundra models have experienced issues with damaged paint around 50,000 miles. Improperly cared for paint can fade and peel as the vehicle ages. Repairing peeling and faded paint requires repainting the affected areas, costing around $1,000 per panel.
  • Recalls: The 2019 Toyota Tundra has had ten recalls, with some addressing critical issues like power steering gear assembly leaks and fuel pump recalls. Toyota offers free replacements for affected models, ensuring safety and reliability.
  • Driver Seat Fabric and Leather Issues: Complaints have been made about driver seat fabric stitching failing and driver leather seats cracking and flaking off. These issues affect the comfort and aesthetics of the interior.
  • Lack of Advanced Features: The 2019 Toyota Tundra lacks some advanced features found in competitors, such as towing-assist technology, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. This can be a drawback for those seeking more modern technology in their vehicle.

These problems, while notable, are relatively minor in the context of a full-size truck like the 2019 Toyota Tundra. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help owners maintain the longevity and performance of their vehicles.

Immediately upon entering I noticed a strange smell. I also noticed at that time that the driver’s seat was extremely warm. I quickly shut off the heat warmer (original equipment on the truck). Inspecting the seat, I could see where the leather was just starting to melt. Luckily, I caught this in time, for if I would have left it longer, the vehicle could have caught fire. An online search discovered previous problems with Toyota seat warmers. My contact with Toyota was not helpful, for they simply told me that it was out of warranty, despite being a safety issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-24
  • VIN: 5TFAY5F15KX
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The electrical system malfunctioned, causing all warning lamps on the dashboard to light up. Because this happened while I was driving, I do believe that this electrical issue caused safety concerns for others on the road. The taillights went out first, seconds later, all remaining electrical failed at once, including airbags, windows, headlights at one point, pre collision warning lights, lane departure, and the breaking system failed as well. This caused safety concerns for myself, my passenger, as well as the public because all safety warning sensors failed at once while on the road. The problem has been confirmed by Roseville Toyota, who is a manufacturer, and who currently has the vehicle now, they said that there is definitely an electrical issue and most likely a short of some sort. The warning lamps and messages on the dash lit up one at a time, seconds apart from each other, until the entire dash was lit up completely while I was driving on March 24, 2023.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-04
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 5TFUM5F12KX
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: We were driving down an unpaved road at 8 mph in 4WDh in our 2019 Toyota Tundra when I heard a couple popping sounds from inside the car. Then it stopped. I opened the passenger side door to get out and check on the truck, and flames were pouring out under the engine. There were 3 of us in the car. We immediately got out and tried to pour water and throw sand on the fire. It grew very quickly, so we ran away. The car was immediately engulfed in flames like something out of a movie with black smoke going high into the air. Within 5-10 minutes, the truck was totally gone. There were no warning signs/lights other than the 2 pops and then fire/explosion. We are very lucky we did not die. We bought it brand new. It was the first new car we’ve ever owned. It was impeccably cared for. We always brought it to the Toyota dealership in Eugene, OR for service. It was there about a month prior to the explosion. During that visit, they replaced the battery as well as dealt with the halogen light recall. Other things were more routine maintenance. We are in shock and do not want this to happen to others. We also do not know what our next steps are, but we wanted your agency to be aware of this issue. The local dealership said it must have been a car defect or bad workmanship at our last service. Either way, it was terrifying.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-13
  • VIN: 5TFDW5F18KX
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: A technical safety bulletin was issue for this issue (T-SB-0036-19). On a recent trip in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, my wife and I were pulling a travel trailer with LED lights and noticed that the trailer disconnected warning come on. We thought it was a loose cable and pulled over to check the plug. We started home after our trip and had this occur several times on step grades. The scary issue is the lights continue to work indicating that it’s still connected, however when I checked the manual brake controller there were no brakes! There were no areas to pull over. Once we were able to pullover safely, we checked the connection again and it was still secure. This occurred again on I-40 as we approached and accident scene with sudden braking. Then it disappeared again. We made it safely home and I started researching the issue and found the bulletin. I took it to Toyota to complete but it’s still an optional bulletin. This is an enormous safety issue considering a 5400 pound truck capable of towing a 9200 pound trailer at highway speeds with no braking or access to the first step to stop trailer sway.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-06
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TFUY5F11KX
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Intermit message "Trailer disconnect " message causing the trailer braking system to fail when attached to truck. Truck brakes are used to stop trailer at unsafe distances. Several trailers were used to verify. I have attached the fix but Toyota says its warranty issue. This is a "safety" issue. I had my 3 year old son in the truck when i had to apply the brakes and couldn't stop in enough time. The truck brakes could not handle the weight of the trailer hence why the trailer brakes were needed. Please prevent a death.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-02-13
  • VIN: 5tfby5f13kx
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Pre collison warning system has turned itself off in the rain and states visit dealer for service. Never logs data and on when you get to dealer. Same system has also flash "Brake" on the highway at 65 mph when a dry sunny day and no cars around. I am worried it may actually brake by accident causing loss of control. Went to dealer on both occasions and because it doesn't log the data there was nothing they could do. Did my own research and there was a technical service bulletin for certain VINS (not mine) to "repair" this module behind the grill. It was done to my truck but not by my dealership before I took ownership. It should not have been done and Route 44 toyota just did nothing. I asked for a replacement and they wouldn't because there wasn't any codes listed to warrant it because the TSB wasn't for my truck even though someone did it. On their TSB it recommends replacement for my current issues but they wouldn't do it.

Negative 2019 Toyota Tundra car reviews

I experienced issues with the fuel system early on, resulting in a significant loss of power at only 13,000 miles, despite the vehicle having 36,000 miles. Despite the dealer initially denying warranty coverage, I firmly requested that they address the issue. However, I found the service manager to be unhelpful and obstructive.

I'm currently driving my second 4x4 crew max, but unfortunately, I've had some issues with the 4WD mechanism and transfer case. On both trucks, the transfer case exploded while driving in mountainous terrain and utilizing the low range 4WD, resulting in a costly repair ranging from $4000 to $12000. Additionally, the fuel consumption is quite high, especially when towing a trailer with a load, as the mileage drops to 6 miles per gallon. I wish I had learned my lesson after the first one.

It seems that some customers are experiencing issues with their radios freezing up. Unfortunately, Toyota is currently charging for updates and if the update does not work, customers are required to purchase a new radio. This can be frustrating, especially for those with relatively new vehicles. It is disheartening to see so many people experiencing the same issue without a clear solution from Toyota. Perhaps it would be worth exploring other options, such as Chevy.

I'm not convinced that Tundra is built in the USA. When the tsunami hit Japan, the plant was shut down due to lack of parts. Assembly takes place in the USA, but from parts shipped from Japan on giant container ships. While driving on the freeways in the city, I see as many Toyotas and other foreign makes as any other brands sitting on the shoulder broke down. However, I understand that some people have a preference for Toyotas, but in reality, they are no better than any other make. By the way, I have decided to switch back to a sedan since the ride on my Toyota was too rough and the fuel mileage was dismal.

I have been a loyal F150 customer since 1990. However, my recent experience with a used 2015 F150 Platinum was not as expected. Despite the carfax report, there were some issues that were not disclosed by the dealer. As a result, I decided to switch to Toyota, especially after learning about the lifetime warranty offered by GST. Although the F150 has some great features, there were a few things that I found disappointing. Firstly, the transmission could use some improvement, especially in 1st gear. Secondly, the interior has a lot of plastic. Thirdly, while the gas mileage is as expected, I found myself making frequent trips to the pump. Overall, I felt that the quality was lacking. I am considering going back to an F150 or possibly a F250.

I spent over a year researching different truck brands such as Chevy, GMC, Dodge, and Honda, trying to find one that fit my budget of around 32K. When I started my search, Toyota was overpriced and the dealer said they never go on sale. I was previously driving a 2005 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab and wanted something similar in size and back seat comfort. After looking at all the small trucks available, I found that the back seating was less than what was in the Dodge, except for Honda. Although the Honda was the best value, it wasn't suitable for use around my yard as the front end was too low to the ground. So, I started a full-size truck search, looking at both new and used (budget) Dodge trucks. The dealerships I visited tried to push the 6 cylinder, but it was underpowered, and once we got to the 8, the pricing ended up being around 40-42K. They did not offer the work truck model at the dealerships I visited. I will say the 40-42K was a little high, but the truck had everything I would want. GMC was too expensive, and Chevy was about the same as the Dodge, but the interior was not as nice, and the transmission did not seem to shift smoothly. I noticed this on several of the Chevy's. I finally revisited the Toyota dealer after walking the lot and seeing a Tacoma 4 door with a 6-foot bed listed at 37K. The ride was nice, but there was little room for passengers in the back seat if my seat was adjusted so I was comfortable. While walking by the Tundra, I noticed they had 1.7K off Dealer and an additional 3K cash from Toyota. Apparently, they do go on sale. I drove the double cab, and it drove just like my Dakota. I checked the back seat, and even though it was not a crew cab, there was just as much room as the Dakota had and more room than any of the small pickups. The base model Tundra has more options than the Chevy work truck, and for me, it was fine, including the steel wheels (might not be for everyone). I have had it for a month, and there is no buyer's remorse. Other trucks have smoother rides, such as the Dodge, but if you don't mind driving a truck that rides like one, this might be for you.The work truck model has a classic feel to it, with the only modern convenience missing being power windows.

    Great truck!

  3. Carmel West 2024-09-19

I've been a proud owner of Toyota vehicles since 2002, and I'm currently on my second Tundra since 2006. While it's true that the Tundra may lack some of the bells and whistles and fuel economy of other models, it more than makes up for it in terms of overall reliability. When it comes to mechanical, electrical, accessories, and body fit and finish, no other model can compare to the Tundra. Even Consumer Reports, which has criticized the Tundra on similar issues, has consistently given it an above-average or superior rating. If you value reliability and service, the Tundra is definitely a sound purchase.

I've had the chance to try out a few full-size pickups over the years, but my 2019 Platinum Tundra is hands down the best truck I've ever driven. With Toyota's excellent warranty and reputation, this truck is a reliable and high-performing choice. I can't say enough good things about it! I was initially hesitant about waiting for the 2020 model, but after reading reviews, I'm glad I didn't. The 2019 model has a better tow rating and provides an incredibly comfortable ride. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

  5. Ubaldo Bahringer 2024-08-23

I've owned a 14, 16, and 2018 Tundra. The first two were 2-wheel drives, and the 18 was a 4x4. All of them had a 5.7-liter engine. While the gas mileage wasn't great, these are big trucks with great tow packages. The 2018 model had lots of technology, great interiors, and a comfortable ride. I think these trucks are awesome and I will definitely buy more in the future!
