2001 Audi S4 problems

audi logo

The Audi S4 is the high performance variant of Audi's compact executive car A4. The original Audi S4, built from 1991 until 1994, was a performance-oriented version of Audi's 100 saloon/sedan. All subsequent S4s since 1997 have been based on the Audi A4; and as the A4 has evolved from one generation to the next, so has the S4.

Like its regular A4 counterpart, all S4 variants have had longitudinally oriented, front-mounted engines. All versions of the S4 have their transmission mounted immediately at the rear of the engine in a longitudinal orientation, in the form of a transaxle, and like all Audi "S" cars, are only available as standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) system, using a Torsen-based centre differential system. A more powerful internal combustion engine, larger upgraded brakes, firmer suspension, larger wheels, and distinctive sheetmetal, styling clues and badging have always been amongst the many upgrades the S4 receives over its mainstream 100 and A4 siblings. In markets where the even higher-performance Audi RS 4 is not offered, the S4 is the top-of-the-line trim of the A4 family.

A single turbocharged 2.2-litre inline five-cylinder powered the original C4 version, and a 2.7-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine was found in the B5 generation. The B6 and B7 versions shared a common 4.2-litre V8 engine, the first time that a V8 engine was placed in a compact executive car, placing it in direct competition with the BMW M3 (3.2 L inline 6) and Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG (3.2-litre supercharged V6). The B8 generation uses a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine and competed with the BMW 335i, BMW 335i/340i xDrive, and Mercedes-Benz C350. The current B9 generation is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine, with rivals including the BMW M340i xDrive and Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG/Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC.

All versions of the S4 have been manufactured at Audi's plant in Ingolstadt, Germany; they are, or have been available as a four-door five-seat saloon and a five-door five-seat Avant (Audi's name for an estate car/station wagon) body styles since the model's inception in 1991. A two-door four-seat Cabriolet (convertible) S4 variant was introduced as part of the B6 and B7 generation A4 lineups. The B8 Cabriolet has now been built off the A5 coupe body style and the "S" variant is marketed under the Audi S5 nameplate.

Common 2001 Audi S4 problems

The 2001 Audi S4 has been known to have several common issues that owners have reported. These problems range from minor inconveniences to more serious concerns that can impact the car's performance and safety.

One of the most frequently reported issues is a worn-out serpentine belt tensioner. This component is responsible for maintaining the correct tension on the serpentine belt, which drives various accessories such as the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor. A worn-out tensioner can lead to the belt slipping or breaking, causing the car to lose power or overheat.

Another common problem with the 2001 Audi S4 is a malfunctioning headlight washer system. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a clogged nozzle or a faulty pump. While not a critical safety concern, a malfunctioning headlight washer system can be an annoyance and may require replacement of the affected components.

Engine codes are also a common issue with the 2001 Audi S4, with purge valve and bank 2 O2 sensor codes being particularly prevalent. The purge valve is a component of the car's evaporative emission control system, which is responsible for preventing fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. A faulty purge valve can cause the car to run poorly or fail emissions tests. The bank 2 O2 sensor is a component of the car's exhaust system that monitors the oxygen content of the exhaust gases. A faulty O2 sensor can cause the car to run poorly or consume more fuel than normal.

Differential seal leaks are another common problem with the 2001 Audi S4. The differential is a component of the car's drivetrain that allows power to be transmitted to the wheels. A leaking differential seal can cause the differential fluid to leak out, which can lead to reduced performance and increased wear on the differential components.

The 2001 Audi S4's coolant reservoir can also become dirty over time, which can indicate a problem with the car's cooling system. A dirty coolant reservoir can be caused by a variety of factors, including leaks in the cooling system or contamination of the coolant. A dirty coolant reservoir can lead to reduced cooling efficiency and increased wear on the engine.

The electric cooling fan is another component that can fail on the 2001 Audi S4. The electric cooling fan is responsible for cooling the engine when the car is idling or at low speeds. A failed cooling fan can cause the engine to overheat, which can lead to reduced performance and increased wear on the engine.

Valve cover gaskets are also known to leak on the 2001 Audi S4. The valve cover gasket is a seal that prevents oil from leaking out of the engine's valve cover. A leaking valve cover gasket can cause the engine to lose oil, which can lead to reduced performance and increased wear on the engine.

In addition to these common issues, the 2001 Audi S4 may also experience problems with its suspension bushings and other components as it ages. These issues can be caused by wear and tear on the car's suspension system, which can lead to reduced handling and stability.

While the 2001 Audi S4's engine is generally considered to be reliable, the car's age and the complexity of its systems can lead to a variety of issues that may require repair or replacement of affected components. Owners of 2001 Audi S4s should be aware of these common problems and take steps to maintain their cars to ensure their safety and performance.

Is the Audi S4 engine reliable?

The S4 is known to have a lot of issues like a failed thermostat, turbocharger failure, engine oil leaks, and premature brake wear, among others. Maintaining an unreliable sedan like the Audi S4 can be costly, but facing a few common issues is worth it if owning a high-performance car can give you a lot of joy.

Is the 2000 Audi S4 reliable?

The 2000 S4 has had poor reliability and is difficult to work on, but after I got past working on my car one month of every year, I realized that the suspension is one of the best in the world that is not electronically assisted. Moreover, it is one of the, if not the best Audi tuner in the world.

How many miles can an S4 last?

You can expect the average Audi S4 to last up to and potentially over 100,000 miles without the need for significant repairs, but only if you take the time to perform routine maintenance while driving in a safe and controlled manner.

Is the 2001 Audi S4 turbocharged?

Under the hood is a 2.7-liter, dual-overhead-cam, 30-valve, twin-turbo V6. It pumps out 250 horsepower, and 258 pound-feet of torque.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-13
  • VIN: WAURD68D81A
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I took the vehicle into the dealer (Westwood Audi) for a Safety Recall repair as requested by Audi. It was for a Driver Front Airbag Inflator replacement. The work was done but when the car was returned the airbag warning light was on. I went back in to the service department and was told that the airbag module had failed and that the part was no longer available from Audi. An aftermarket part could be installed but I would have to pay for part and the repair. No cost estimate has been given. I called Audi of America and they said that the Dealer told them that they didn't break it so they will not cover the cost of repair. I have owned this car for 20 years and it is in exceptional condition. I took it to the Dealer in perfect condition for an airbag repair and got it back with an air bag warning light on and they say they didn't do it? Now I have a car without functioning airbags. Anything that you can do to help resolve this?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-12-02
  • VIN: WAURD68D41A
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I JUST HAPPENED TO LOOK UP RECALLS AND SAW THE COMPLAINTS ON THE AUDI S4 2001. I NOTICED MY CAR WASN'T THE ONLY ONE WHERE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HAS LOST PIXELS AND ENDS UP UNREADABLE FOR ALL WARNINGS AND MANUFACTURER PROGRAMMED SAFETY WARNINGS. IT HAS BEEN LIKE THIS FOR YEARS AND DID ASK MY DEALER HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST TO FIX IT AND IT WAS INSANE. IT IS A REAL SAFETY ISSUE. AUDI SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING IT. I DIDN'T REALIZE OTHER AUDI'S WERE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. MAYBE IF MORE PEOPLE COMPLAIN, AUDI WILL BE FORCED TO FIX IT.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-12-31
  • VIN: WAURD68D61A
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: YOKOHAMA YK520 335/45R/17 TIRES... DRIVING ALONG WITH MY 2001 AUDI S4 AND STARTED NOTICING A WOBBLE OR SHIMMY IN THE STEERING WHEEL. KEPT GETTING WORSE. THE TIRES HAVE LESS THAN 20K MILES ON THEM SO I THOUGH I NEEDED AN ALIGNMENT. (ENTIRE FRONT SUSPENSION HAS BEEN UPGRADED).. I TOOK THE TIRES OFF TO MAKE SURE I DIDN;T HAVE A BENT RIM AND NOTICED BOTH FRONT TIRES WERE WORN OUT/CUT ON THE OUTER CORNER/LIP OF THE TIRES. I FIRST THOUGHT IT WAS CAUSED BY THE CONTROL ARMS. MY MECHANIC LOOKED AT THEM AND TOLD ME THAT THE BELTS HAD SEPARATED ON BOTH TIRES CAUSING THE TIRE TO "DEFORM" AND THEN HIT MY CONTROL ARMS/WISHBONE. HE SAID IT LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER 100 MILES AND BOTH FRONT TIRES WOULD HAVE BLOWN APART. THAT REALLY SOUNDED LIKE FUN ON THE FREEWAY AT FREEWAY SPEEDS...! I ROTATED THE FRONT TIRES WITH THE "GOOD" REAR TIRES, AND HAVE CHECKED THEM EVERY 20 MILES. ABSOLUTELY NO HITTING OR RUBBING ON ANYTHING. SO YES, THE BELTS HAD SEPARATED. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-01-15
  • VIN: WAURD68D41A
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: COLD START ON A COLD JANUARY MORNING (5 DEGREES F); UPON STARTING THE CAR THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND WOULD NOT SHUT OFF. RESEARCH (DISCUSSIONS WITH THE DEALER AND AIR BAG REPAIR BUSINESSES) INDICATE THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON DEFECT FOR AUDI S4, MODEL YEAR 2001 AND THAT TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (COMPUTER) WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT AN EXORBITANT COST. AIRBAG SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY INOPERABLE WITH THE WARNING LIGHT IN A LIT STATE. ON LINE AUDI FORUMS INDICATE THAT THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM ON THESE CARS. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-01-01
  • VIN: WAURD68D01A
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 1) THERE IS NO TRIGGERING EVENT LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE. IT JUST APPEARS OVER TIME. 2) THE LCD SCREEN IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HAS LINES OF PIXELS THAT DO NOT LIGHT UP. THIS IS CONSTANT, WITH MORE LINES OF PIXELS GOING OUT AND PERMANENTLY STAYING OUT OVER TIME. AS A CONSEQUENCE, IMPORTANT WARNING MESSAGES ARE NOT DISPLAYED OR READABLE; SUCH AS WORN OUT BRAKE PADS, FUEL LOW WARNING, WASHER FLUID LOW WARNING, ETC. IF THESE WARNINGS ARE NOT DISPLAYED, THE VEHICLE MAY RUN OUT OF GAS WITHOUT WARNING AND STALL WHILE OPERATING, OR BRAKES MAY WEAR DOWN TO THE POINT OF LOSING EFFECTIVENESS WITHOUT WARNING, OR BE LEFT WITHOUT WASHER FLUID WITHOUT WARNING. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-01-14
  • VIN: WAURD68D41A
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I OWN A 2001 AUDI S4. THE CENTER DISPLAY ON THE GAUGE CLUSTER IS FAILING DUE TO MISSING PIXELS. THE CENTER DISPLAY NORMALLY DISPLAYS CRITICAL SAFETY INFORMATION REGARDING FAILING ENGINE AND BODY COMPONENTS. IT IS ALWAYS MISSING PIXELS, AND IS NEVER CLEAR ENOUGH TO READ PROPERLY. RECENTLY, I DEVELOPED AN OIL LEAK AND THE CENTER DISPLAY WASN'T CLEAR ENOUGH TO SEE THE LOW OIL WARNING LIGHT. AS A RESULT I WAS STRANDED IN SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION. I AM CURRENTLY REPAIRING THE ENGINE FAR BEYOND WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN NECESSARY, HAD THE CENTER DISPLAY BEEN WORKING CORRECTLY. I HAVE NOT YET REPAIRED THE DISPLAY, BECAUSE THE DEALER IS ASKING $1000 FOR REPLACEMENT. I KNOW IT A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR, AND DUE TO THE AGE, IS REACHING A VERY HIGH PERCENTAGE OF FAILURE. I DON'T THINK THAT FAILING SAFETY EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE A ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ITEM FOR ANYONE, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS A HIGH DOLLAR ITEM. *TR

2001 Audi S4 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2001 Audi S4.

2021-06-23
  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2000-2001 Audi TT Coupe, TT Roadster, 2000-2002 A4, and S4 vehicles equipped with Non-Azide Driver Air Bag Inflators (NADI) that do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, possibly causing the air bag to deploy improperly in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, the air bag may not properly protect the occupant, increasing the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Dealers will replace the driver frontal airbag inflator with an alternative inflator, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 2, 2021. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69CJ.

Positive 2001 Audi S4 car reviews

  1. Maurice Marquardt 2024-11-20

By accident, I went from an A4 Avant to an S4 Avant. During a visit to the dealership to purchase some touch-up paint for the A4, a friend asked me if I liked the S4. I replied positively, except for the shift linkage. He then tossed me the keys to an S4 AVANT Tip and said, 'go drive this for a while.' Well, after an hour, I ended up with a new car! It has been flawless for me and is great fun to drive. Most people don't realize that a little European station wagon can turn in a sub 6-second 0-60 time. It performs flawlessly in daily city driving as well as extended road trips. If it has a flaw, it would be that at 120 mph, you feel like you are doing 60. I absolutely love this car!

  2. Joseph Murray 2024-10-27

Sounds like you had a blast driving it on Alcan! It's an awesome winter car, although it might not be the best fit for a big family since the rear space is a little tight.

  3. Hiram Emard 2024-08-21

This sedan has abundant power and plenty of aftermarket performance and style additions available. It's a great choice for those who want a car that doesn't draw unwanted attention from the authorities.

  4. Aidan Schneider 2024-07-29

I currently own a 4-Runner and a '00 Boxster, but I am in need of another car. Since my Boxster's lease is ending soon and my mother wants to use the 4-Runner, I have decided to get the S4. Here's why: 1) It's fast! With a chipped ECU, it can get you over 300 hp and 350 tq/ft. 2) It's 4WD, so no need to worry about the weather. 3) It's rich in features, including a Bose stereo system, heated and 8-way power seats, glass sunroof, all dim mirrors, roof bike rack, ESP, and more. 4) The space is about the same as a BMW and a bit better than the IS300 in terms of cabin and rear trunk space. When compared to the 325i Wagon or IS300 Wagon, I believe this is a better buy in terms of features, comfort, and power for the price.

  5. Olen Buckridge 2024-05-28

I purchased this car as my second vehicle when I was 19, with 100k miles on the clock. At first, I didn't even know what it was until I found it online and did more research. It turned out to be a 2.7L V6 with twin K03 turbos, which was a pleasant surprise. Although it has had some reliability issues, I have maintained it well and it still runs strong at 145k miles. The Quattro system is impressive and has pulled some heavy vehicles out of tough spots. The car is a complete sleeper and has a phenomenal sound. The interior is simple yet elegant, with a quality finish. The exterior design is timeless and still looks great on the road today. Overall, I would definitely buy this car again in the future. UPDATE: Despite a coolant leak and a hit to the passenger side in a wreck, the car still runs strong and I walked away without even a whiplash. I am a loyal German car fan and will never buy anything else.
