Ford Windstar 1998 problems
The Ford Windstar (later the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey) is a minivan that was produced and sold by Ford. The replacement for the Ford Aerostar, the Windstar adopted the front-wheel drive configuration of the Chrysler minivans. From the 1995 to 2007 model years, three generations of the model line were sold, with the final generation renamed as the Ford Freestar.
Unrelated to the Nissan-developed Mercury Villager, the Windstar was marketed without a Lincoln-Mercury counterpart. As part of the 2004 launch of the Ford Freestar, Mercury introduced its first Ford-produced minivan in a revival of the Mercury Monterey nameplate.
Following a decline in sales across the minivan segment in the mid-2000s, the Freestar and Monterey were discontinued after the 2007 model year with no direct replacement. In North America, the model line was functionally matched by the 7-passenger 2008 Ford Taurus X wagon/CUV; in Mexico, the Freestar was replaced by the Ford Transit/Tourneo. In 2014, Ford reentered the segment as the Ford Transit Connect compact MPV gained 7-passenger seating in North America.
During its production the Ford Windstar/Freestar and the Mercury Monterey were sourced from Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario). In total, 1,984,232 were produced (1,704,786 Windstars, 246,493 Freestars, and 32,953 Montereys).

When you compare the low maintenance cost of the Windstar to the three or four times maintenance cost of imports, there is simply no comparison. The interior design of the Windstar served as a model for other minivans in the coming years, providing exceptional comfort. The Windstar was also ahead of its time in terms of fuel economy, achieving nineteen to twenty miles per gallon, surpassing other minivans. It's worth noting that many Windstars are still on the road after ten years or more, while the Honda Odysseys, Susuki Oasis, Toyota Siennas, and the rest of that bunch have mostly been decommissioned, despite their owners spending a lot more money on them trying to keep them alive. It's clear that the Windstar is the winner of this contest.

I have had seven Windstars over the past decade (presently own three) and I must say, reliability has been great. I bought a 95 model with 175000 miles and now it's at 250000 and everything still works perfectly. I have had some gasket and bearing work done, but that's about it. I haven't had to do anything to the transmission or motor on any of the vehicles I have owned. Maybe my day is coming, but for now, it's been a great van for me.

Your car is actually pretty good! I bought it new and have had some minor issues with the Check Engine light coming on due to the ethanol fuel. Ethanol is made from corn, which attracts water. However, I found a simple solution to this problem. All you need to do is disconnect the battery, remove the fuel filter, blow out the gas and water, add a bottle of rubbing alcohol to only 5 gallons of gas, and reconnect the battery after 5 minutes to reset the ECM. This should keep your car running smoothly for the next few weeks. If you're interested, I can also look into retrofitting a glass bowl purge type system to eliminate the water. By the way, I recently replaced the dual speed fan control switch for only $38, which saved me a lot of money compared to the $800 that Ford quoted me. This little fan switch controls the A/C vacuum doors, power brake boosters, speed control, and other features. Overall, the car is running great now!

Around town and coast to coast, our vehicle is always comfortable and reliable. It's excellent for long trips and we have NEVER had to repair anything! We make sure to change the oil and filter on schedule, and we replaced the self-sealing tires at 50,000 miles. Otherwise, it's been expense-free!

We purchased this car used from a dealership when it had 36k miles, and now it has 57k miles. The ride is great, it's spacious and roomy, and has excellent acceleration (3.8L). The driver's and passenger's view is good, and the safety structure is comparable to Siennas and Odysseys (www.nhtsa.dot.gov, www.hwysafety.org). However, we have experienced some issues with reliability. Occasionally, the back windows won't work, and the side views don't function properly. We have also experienced the door ajar issue when all doors are closed, and the transmission in reverse is beginning to rattle, which corresponds to the poorly made transmission that we have heard much about.

I purchased this vehicle brand new, but unfortunately, it never ran smoothly from the very beginning. Despite taking it to the dealer multiple times, they were unable to identify any issues. However, at 84000 miles, the transmission failed, and prior to that, the power steering at 77000 miles, costing me a significant amount of money. The brakes also seized up on me. Despite contacting Ford, they were unable to assist me as the warranty had expired. While I am disappointed with my experience, I will refrain from purchasing a Ford product in the near future and cannot recommend it to anyone I care about.

This car was great at first, but unfortunately, we ended up spending more money on repairs than the car's actual value. The head gasket was a constant problem, and it finally died after hitting a pothole and knocking out its transmission. The gears would get stuck, and it would jolt when starting up, making for a less than smooth ride.

I own 5 of these as part of my cab fleet. Unfortunately, after just 100k miles, every one of them needed a transaxle (transmission) and a new rack (steering). Additionally, the front suspension is very prone to wear, constantly requiring changes to ball joints, idler arms, and more. While most of my vehicles go 500k miles before retiring at about 6 years old, these Windstars aren't making it. I suggest that anybody who reaches 100-120k of normal use get rid of it quickly. It's worth noting that the Windstar is actually a Taurus with a different body, which makes it too heavy for the chassis and drive train.

Transmission problems were all over the place, but Ford kept insisting that it was normal. I decided to sell it and I will never buy a Ford again.

You have a good, reliable engine that doesn't burn oil and even exceeded EPA estimates on the highway with an impressive 26 MPG. However, there is quite a bit of interior noise and the removable second and third row seats are quite heavy. The brakes are also only marginal. On the plus side, the tow package for 3500 lbs worked well and there were no major failures in 203000 miles. Unfortunately, the seat cushions on the front driver side did not retain cushion and the radio's AM reception is poor.
