UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-16
- VIN: WA1BNAFY5K2
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Clock spring I drive a 2019 Volkswagen Audi Q5. My vehicle was serviced on [XXX]. After the service I received a video message saying “overall my vehicle appeared to be in excellent condition”. The following day I was out running errands and the airbag light came on. I thought it may be a glitch due to something that happened during the service. Based on my driving, my signal and the control panels were working as I was able to adjust the radio and call my mother using the steering wheel controls. I contacted the dealership initially I was told because it was Saturday, It would be Monday before anyone could assist me. However, about 15 minutes later, the serviceman, David, who took care of me on Friday called me back. After discussion, he told me I could bring my vehicle in. I brought the vehicle in and waited approximately an hour. The service man later told me that it was the clock spring; however, they were not sure what exactly was wrong with the clock spring. I was placed in a rental and told they would contact me later. Before close of the service department on Saturday, I received a call from the service man who stated it was indeed the spring. He did not specify what exactly was the problem, but that it would need to be replaced. I was looking at cost of $1600. He also told me this is unusual given the number miles that I have on the vehicle I know that Volkswagen has had issues with the clock spring on some of its vehicles. Therefore I am wondering could this potentially be a problem with some Audi vehicles as well? INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
- VIN: WA1ANAFY9K2
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: Seat belt would not release. The first dozen or so times it was extremely difficult to get it to release. Over time it became less difficult, still a struggle. It is currently at Audi of Greenville, SC waiting for a replacement part for a safety issue at a cost of almost $800.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01
- VIN: WA1BNAFY7K2
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I was driving on the highway in the early morning hours and several warnings appeared stating that the left and right tail lights, left and right brake lights, and center brake lights where faulty. It was dark outside and raining, and I immediately had no rear lights of any kind driving on the highway. The dealership was able to correct the issue with a technical service bulletin, but given the extreme danger involved in not having any working rear lights, I would expect this to be a recall and done free of charge, regardless of warranty status. Because my vehicle was 10K miles beyond the warranty, I had to pay a flat diagnostic fee which simply doesn't make sense. If there is service bulletin, why isn't this update made proactively?
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
- VIN: WA1BNAFY3K2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: My vehicle does a few things that are dangerous. Number 1 the emergency brake went on automatically when I was driving the parkway in New Jersey telling me to watch my surroundings. I was driving late in the evening and no cars were in my immediate distance. Another issue, the emergency warning light just came on my dash telling me my light above my license plate was faulty and I was almost rear ended by the vehicle behind me. My tail lights just stopped working out of no where. Also, when I am backing into a parking space the brakes will automatically slam on when there is no need.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-10
- VIN: WA1BNAFY9K2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: When driving in extreme cold (ambient temperatures of -35 or colder) and I reach a speed of 50mph or higher, my engine fails. The dealership refuses to resolve this issue. I am listing the first time this happened, although it is an ongoing issue.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-18
- VIN: WA1CNAFY0K2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The right rear tail light assembly module which regulates the backup and braking light has not been operable since 05/18/2023. I was informed by Audi online I need to order a new assembly because the bulbs that are installed cannot be changed. I ordered the new part on 05/19/2023 from Audi of Chandler, AZ. and was informed it will take anywhere from 4-6 weeks. I was informed there are currently two thousand of these tail light assemblies on back order. I then contacted the Audi dealerships in Gilbert, AZ. and Scottsdale, AZ. and was informed of the same back order situation. I called the Audi dealership in Chandler, AZ. on 07/14 and was informed by the parts manager there are still 600 assembles on back order. I then contacted Audi corporate on 07/28/2023 to lodge a complaint. I was told I was to receive a call back within two days after a review. After not receiving a call back I contacted Audi on 08/01/2023 and again was informed of no new information. I received an email on 08/01/2023 from Audi customer care informing me to contact a specific representative. I left two voice messages on 08/02/2023 and was never contacted. The email also stated to reply if I care to do so which I did on 08/02/2023 with no response. On 08/03/2023 I left a message for two different representatives and have not heard back. The case # with Audi is [XXX]. This is a circuity problem which Audi must know about if at one point they had two thousand of these tail light assemblies on back order. This non functioning taillight assembly is a serious safety hazard which needs be corrected. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-17
- VIN: WA1BNAFYXK2
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Sunroof exploded--no sign of rock (not near overpass), gun shot, bird, etc. It just blew up at highway speed on 6/17/2023 near milepost 98 on I-55 south near Cape Girardeau MO. Fortunately the interior cloth sunshade prevented glass from entering the vehicle. We were at risk from the shock of the situation and the possibility of glass debris (but see above). No warning, no inspections.
POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-22
- VIN: WA1BNAFY5K2
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I have a 2019 Audi Q5 with under 24k miles over the past 4 years of new vehicle ownership. There have been 5+ instances where I am driving under normal conditions and suddenly the vehicle jerks abruptly, slows down to half the original speed (from 65 mph on freeway to 30 mph), gear shifting becomes irregular and the following indicators appear on the dashboard: 1) check engine light, 2) vehicle repair required 3) warning icon w/ triangle around and exclamation point. "Drive system malfunction" note appears on screen. Ignition cycling may temporarily remove the warning indicator lights, however the same exact issue happens once I'm back on the road - sometimes only driving at 20 mph through residential streets. I have taken the vehicle into Audi service centers for immediate repair after each incident, only to have this become a recurring issue. This is an extremely dangerous situation where a vehicle could unexpectedly reduce speeds and potentially result in traffic accidents. I have found many internet posts on this same exact issue which are major concerns of Audi owners.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-12
- VIN: WA1BNAFY2K2
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Power steering rack failed on 4/12/2022 as I drove on I-75 South between Gainesville and Tampa. STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-06
- VIN: WA1BNAFY1K2
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: 2019 Q5 - 19457 miles. Power steering failed while traveling on an internal curved road at 10mph. Fortunately, the road was not busy and I was able to pull besides a curb. The car flashed a 'Steering: Malfunction! Please stop vehicle' warning and it was really hard to maneuver the car. Towed the car to nearest Audi dealership and dealer is looking at it. But if this had happened on a freeway, it would've resulted in a catastrophic accident.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-12
- VIN: WA1BNAFY2K2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: I received a Safety Recall from Audi of America for my 2019 Audi Q5, I am pleased that the recall is being done. However, the description of what could happen, in the Safety Recall letter, should water enter the Gateway Module does not describe what happen to me when the Gateway Control Module got wet from liquid spilled in the backseat of my car. The 2nd paragraph under “ What is the Issue “ states in part, “ The vehicle remains steerable and the brake system is fully operable. The engine goes into emergency mode and remains in operation with reduced power. “ I was driving my 2019 Audi Q5 on December 12, 2021 on a heavy traveled avenue with many traffic lights. As I went thru the second light before entering 1- 20 West the car just shut down and I mean totally stopped. No warning, nothing. The vehicle was not steerable, The brake system did not work The engine did not start, did not go into an emergency mode and did not remain in operation with reduced power. The car was Totally Un-Operable We called 911 for the Police and a Tow Truck. We sat in horrible traffic for more than 2 hours even with the Police. And the car could not be towed with a regular truck because the wheels were locked. Thus another tow truck had to be called so the car could be put on a flatbed truck to be taken to the Audi Dealer. I believe the Safety Notice from Audi needs to be corrected to give Notice that the Gateway Control Module when exposed to water can and has shut the entire system down and the car can become entirely inoperable as I described above. This is a very dangerous situation which may not only cause serious accidents but permanent injuries and death. I shiver now when I think of what else could have happened to us, but for the Grace of God, because we were seconds from getting on I- 20 West when the car just stopped. I appreciate this opportunity to share this information with you. I hope it will make a positive difference for the safety of others.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-04
- Crash: 1

- Summary: After driving on deep wet icy slush, the vehicle was on a straight section of road and suddenly vehicle inexplicably veered hard to the left causing it to run off the road and into a tree. Electrical component failure lights were illuminated on dash afterwards. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? I believe that the stability control systems and or drive train suddenly changed. I believe this might be due to water ingress and failure of gateway module. This is available upon request. Car is in shop How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? sudden loss of steering control in icy conditions Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? not yet. Current recall Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? body shop is looking at vehicle Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? I was unaware of warning lamps until after loss of control.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-05
- VIN: WA1BNAFYXK2
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: A vehicle service center noticed that the rubber on the surface of the tire tread appeared to be failing /deteriorating on all four tires in a way that was not normal. Cracks at least .25 inches deep are forming and some small chunks are separating. Given that the same condition exists on all four tires, this appears to be a manufacturing defect. The dealership examined the tires and agreed that the condition was not normal but not currently part of the Continental tire recall. We highly recommend that this line of tires be included in the recall to protect the safety of drivers and passengers.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-04-27
- VIN: WA1BNAFYXK2
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH IN THE RAIN THE POWER STEERING MALFUNCTION ERROR MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE VIRTUAL COCKPIT. I PULLED OVER INTO AN EMPTY PARKING LOT, TURNED THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED. THE ERROR MESSAGE WAS STILL THERE WHEN I TURNED THE CAR ON. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, ESPECIALLY WHEN MOVING AT VERY LOW SPEEDS. IT WAS THE SAME FEELING AS DRIVING A CAR WITHOUT POWER STEERING, WHICH IF THE DRIVER IS NOT EXPECTING IT OR PHYSICALLY STRONG ENOUGH TO TURN THE WHEEL, WOULD DEFINITELY PRESENT A SAFETY ISSUE. GIVEN THIS IS A NEW CAR (ONLY 11K MILES) I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED AND CONCERNED THIS COULD HAPPEN. THIS TYPE OF MALFUNCTION/DEFECT SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING ON ANY NEW CAR, WHETHER IT IS A BASE BRAND OR LUXURY BRAND CAR.

The car was well-maintained and we even took it to the Audi dealer to program the extra key that Enterprise paid for. As a bonus, the dealer performed a complimentary inspection and car wash, giving the car a clean bill of health. The only minor issue is a few blemishes on the rear bumper, but that's to be expected since it served as a rental car for a year.

I recently traded in my 2015 ML350 Benz Blue Tec for a new 2019 Q5. I thought I needed a smaller SUV with more tech and took it out for a test drive. The dealership didn't want me to go far, but the Q5 seemed very nice. However, as I spent more time in it, I found that it's not a car to drive for more than 3 hours without taking a break. The driver's seat had no side leg support, so I kept sliding to the driver's door and had to keep adjusting myself, which was tiring. It's fine for short trips around town, but not for long drives. The Audi now has 8700 miles after twelve months, which isn't a lot, but due to Covid, I haven't been driving as much. This week, I am starting to look for a more full-size SUV. I can see myself keeping the Q5, and I know I am going to take a hit when I trade it in, but that's just life.

Hello! I'm a 75-year-old man and this is definitely not my first vehicle, but my wife and I absolutely love it! We've had it for 11 days now and have already driven approximately 500 miles. The vehicle handles like a sedan - smooth as silk on the road with great acceleration. The interior looks rich and luxurious. However, there is just one thing that I'm not a fan of - the black color. Unfortunately, Audi doesn't offer a lot of color choices, but putting that aside, we still feel that it was a great vehicle and a good choice overall.

Continental Tires can be quite noisy, which can be frustrating when you're trying to enjoy a peaceful ride. Unfortunately, this can detract from an otherwise pleasant driving experience. If you're considering purchasing a Q5, you may want to explore other tire options. It's disappointing to hear that the dealer has not been able to address this issue for you.

The Q5 handles well and comes with NAV and other accessories priced at $7000. However, the voice command feature needs improvement as it only recognized one out of 30+ commands. It is currently unable to input my home address, go shopping, or allow for manual input. Additionally, the Bose speakers, priced at $900, sound average. Overall, while the Q5 has its strengths, there is room for improvement in certain areas.

I have identified a defect in the engineering of the car. While driving, my right hip experiences discomfort, which is not the case when I drive other cars. I am confident that this issue is unique to this particular car. Have you or anyone else experienced a similar issue?

I recently experienced an issue with my Audi while on vacation. While driving on a two-lane highway, I hit a small road bump, and the parking brake suddenly locked on, causing my car to come to a halt and block traffic. After the police and tow truck arrived, I had my car towed to the nearest Audi dealer. Unfortunately, it took 46 hours for them to diagnose the issue, which turned out to be a broken parking brake. I was surprised that this wasn't a recall, and I wondered if anyone else had experienced this problem. It took five days to get the part, which was frustrating. I reached out to Audi roadside and other contacts for help, but unfortunately, they were unable to assist me with transportation. Overall, I have had some electrical issues with my Audi, and the service experience has been disappointing. As a result, I have decided that this will be my last Audi.
