2000 Mitsubishi Montero sport problems
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a mid-size SUV produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors using the Pajero nameplate since 1996 that has spanned over three generations and based on the Triton pickup truck. Mitsubishi has formerly used the Mitsubishi Challenger (Japanese: 三菱・チャレンジャー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Charenjā) name in Japan and some international markets, but since the third generation, the Pajero Sport/Montero Sport/Shogun Sport was the name used instead.
First generation (K80/K90/PA/PA II; 1996)
For the SUV sold alongside the first generation Montero Sport in Latin American markets, see Mitsubishi Montero Outlander.
Production began in Japan in 1996, and was available for most export markets by 1997, where it was variously known as the Challenger, Pajero Sport in Europe, Montero Sport in North America, South America, Spain and the Philippines, Nativa in parts of Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East, Shogun Sport in the United Kingdom, and Strada G-Wagon in Thailand. Based on the Strada pickup truck of the same vintage, sharing many components and some body panels (i.e. front doors), the first-generation Pajero Sport was also built on the second-generation Pajero wheelbase, and served as a smaller model to the larger Pajero.
Like the Pajero, it featured independent front suspension with torsion bars and a live rear axle. In addition to numerous facelifts over the years, there was a major suspension change from rear leaf to coil springs in late 2000. As its popularity increased, local assembly for foreign markets was introduced in China in 2003, and Brazil in 2006. Sales were discontinued in Japan in 2003. In the United States, where it was superseded by the Endeavor, sales ended in 2004. In Canada the Montero Sport continued to be sold alongside the Endeavor until 2008. Sales in central and western Europe ended in 2008, with the introduction of the second generation Pajero/Montero Sport. In Japan, it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.
The 3-litre V6 is the most commonly used engine; it produces 175 hp (130 kW; 177 PS) at 5,000 rpm. The North American market received petrol V6 engines during all years of production while a petrol 2.4-litre engine was offered on base models from 1997 through 1999 in the United States and for additional years in Canada. Markets outside of North America also had a variety of turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines to choose between.

Common 2000 Mitsubishi Montero sport problems
The Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2000 has been reported to have several common problems, based on complaints from owners of this car. Here are some of the issues in detail:
- Loose or Broken Crankshaft Pulley Bolt: This is one of the most common problems reported by Mitsubishi Montero Sport owners. The crankshaft pulley bolt can become loose or broken, causing the engine to malfunction. This issue can be resolved by replacing the crankshaft pulley bolt with a high-quality OEM replacement.
- Four-wheel drive actuator: The four-wheel drive actuator is a common issue in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2000 . This component is responsible for controlling the four-wheel drive system, and it can malfunction due to vacuum leaks or faulty switches. This issue can cause the flashing four-wheel drive lights and shifting problems with the transfer case and front differential.
- O2 sensors: The O2 sensors are a common issue in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2000, especially those that monitor the catalytic converters . These sensors can become worn out or damaged, causing the catalytic converter to fail and throw a code. Replacing the O2 sensors with high-quality sensors can help resolve this issue.
- Valve stem seals: The valve stem seals are a common issue in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2000, especially in high-mileage vehicles . These seals can wear out and cause the engine to burn oil. Replacing the valve stem seals can be a time-consuming and expensive job, but it is necessary to prevent further damage to the engine.
- Gauges: The gauges in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2000 can be a common issue, especially the fuel gauge and temperature gauge . These gauges can malfunction due to a bad resistor or faulty wiring, causing inaccurate readings. Replacing the faulty parts can help resolve this issue.
- Overdrive problems: Some owners of the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2000 have reported issues with the overdrive, such as violent transitions into overdrive or difficulty shifting into overdrive. This issue can be caused by a faulty transmission or a malfunctioning O/D switch.
- High mileage repair items: The Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2000 is known to have high mileage repair items, such as the starter, idle air control valve, battery, brake switch, front wheel bearings, and brake rotors. These items can wear out or malfunction due to high mileage, and replacing them can help keep the vehicle running smoothly.
- Transmission issues: Some owners of the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2000 have reported transmission issues, such as the transmission going out at high mileage. This issue can be caused by a lack of maintenance or wear and tear.
- Alternator problems: Some owners of the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2000 have reported alternator problems, such as the alternator going out and requiring a full day to replace due to the complexity of the repair. This issue can be caused by wear and tear or a manufacturing defect.
In summary, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2000 has several common problems, including issues with the fuel system, four-wheel drive actuator, O2 sensors, valve stem seals, gauges, overdrive, high mileage repair items, transmission, and alternator. These issues can be caused by various factors, such as wear and tear, manufacturing defects, or lack of maintenance. Owners of the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2000 should be aware of these common problems and take appropriate measures to maintain their vehicle and address any issues that arise.
Are Mitsubishi Montero Sports reliable?
According to MotorTrend and various forums, the Montero is overall a reliable SUV. However, there are certain model years that run into problems in their transmissions, braking, and engines, which are always certainly expensive to fix. These are the 2001 to 2002 Montero models.
How many miles can a Mitsubishi Montero last?
I have a few customers well into the 300k mile range, and a lot of customers in the 200s. Really it all depends on how well the vehicle is maintained, but it is unusual to see any major failures even at this mileage provided the basic maintenance is done on time.
Is Montero Sport durable?
In the competitive mid-size SUV category, the Montero Sport is the best option for those looking for a combination of adaptability and dependability. Its rugged design screams durability and strength.
Is Montero Sport fuel efficient?
Fuel economy
During our testing, the midsize SUV was able to return about 7km/L in heavy city traffic and 17.7km/L in real-world highway conditions. In a mixed city and highway driving conditions, the Montero Sport was able to put up a fuel economy figure of 14.4km/L.

This truck has a very strong overall body build and nice exterior looks. You can rely on its engine to not leave you stranded on the road, and it has a good suspension. However, it does have a large turning radius and may not be as maneuverable in tight parking spots. Additionally, the AC takes longer to cool off the interior in hot summers compared to Toyotas. Some frustrating electrical glitches have been experienced, such as the auto lights turning on when opening the passenger door and the alarm failing to arm during very cold winters.

This is a great car! I've owned it for almost 4 years and it has never given me any trouble. While it may not have as much horsepower as some mid-sized SUVs, it's perfect for my needs and I have no complaints. I highly recommend this vehicle!
-
I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I've only had one issue with this vehicle in the last 3 years, which is that my power antenna is INOP. However, other than that, she has worked out really well for my family!
-
Fun SUV to drive! A lot of people love the way the truck looks. It's a very nice ride. However, the SUV had a kick when going from a low to a high gear. You may want to check out the transmission as it's also acting funny.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Montero Sport XLS that I got brand new in 2000. I absolutely love this car! Not only does it look great and always get compliments, but it also has great power when I head up to the mountains, even with the air conditioning on full blast. And the fuel mileage is amazing - I'm averaging about 20 to 21 miles per gallon! Plus, the ride is surprisingly quiet for an SUV. Overall, I highly recommend this great SUV. If you're in the market for a used car, I would definitely suggest getting the 2000 Montero Sport over a 2001 or 2002. In my opinion, they've begun transforming the car to more of an Xterra type instead of a nicer 4 runner type, and they offer less options in the newer ones. So, if you're looking for the best Montero of all, go for the 2000! Thanks for reading.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such great success with your Mitsubishi Montero Sport! It sounds like you've taken great care of it, with over 90,000 miles on the clock. It's great to hear that you've only had minor issues, like the electric antenna not functioning. Overall, it sounds like the Montero Sport has been a reliable and enjoyable vehicle for you, and I hope it continues to serve you well in the future.
Alec Kessler 2024-03-08
I have always experienced a front-end creaking noise that the dealers were unable to fix or locate. Additionally, several switches had to be replaced as they had stopped working. Unfortunately, the servicing dealership (Burlington Mitsubishi) overfilled the automatic transmission with fluid, causing it to overheat. As a result, I have decided to trade it in for a Toyota 4-runner or Sequoia. The resale values for Toyota's are significantly better and their reliability is exceptional (my wife drives a 4-runner). Based on my experiences with three separate dealerships, I cannot recommend this vehicle to anyone.

Fun to drive! You get many compliments on the look of the vehicle. I like the size compared to other mid-size SUVs. However, I was disappointed with the performance of the transmission, as it has a delayed kick-in when increasing speed, especially when the vehicle is cold. Additionally, the 4WD has had issues with slippage. Overall, it's a great car with some minor issues.
