2001 Pontiac Montana problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Montana is a minivan that was sold by General Motors under the Pontiac brand for model years 1997 to 2009. Its badge-engineered variants were the Chevrolet Venture and the Oldsmobile Silhouette in the first generation, and the Chevrolet Uplander, Saturn Relay, and Buick Terraza in the second generation. Prior to the 1997 model year, it was known as the Pontiac Trans Sport.

In 1996 for the 1997 model year, the Trans Sport added the Montana moniker as part of an available trim package. This package proved so popular the line was renamed Montana in 1998 for the 1999 model year in the United States and 1999 for the 2000 model year in Canada. When the van was redesigned in 2004 for the 2005 model year, the name was changed to Montana SV6. It was discontinued after the 2006 model year in the United States because of slow sales, but continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until 2009. Since their introduction, the Pontiac minivans were GM's most popular minivans among consumers in Canada.

The Doraville, Georgia assembly plant which produced the Montana and its siblings closed on September 26, 2008. Sales of the Montana SV6 continued for Canada and Mexico until 2009, a year before the Pontiac brand was discontinued in 2010.

Common 2001 Pontiac Montana problems

The 2001 Pontiac Montana has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and transmission.

  • Erratic Shifting: This is another common issue for 1999 to 2006 Montana models. The issue is caused by a faulty pressure control solenoid, which controls fluid pressure to the clutch's friction plate. The failed pressure control solenoid results in rough and delayed shifts and causes the transmission to make grinding or whining sounds. Replacing the faulty pressure control solenoid involves disassembling the transmission, which is costly and labor-intensive.
  • Leaking Refrigerant: Several Montana owners have reported that their air-conditioning stopped working. The A/C failure is caused by leaking refrigerant in the minivan’s system, which can be expensive to repair.
  • Transmission Problems: The 2001 Montana has been reported to have transmission problems, including the torque converter clutch sticking on. This can cause the transmission to not function properly and can be costly to repair. A torque converter clutch is responsible for eliminating slippage and improving gas mileage at higher speeds. If the clutch sticks and won’t unlock at lower speeds, the necessary slippage won’t occur, and the transmission won’t function properly. Replacing a torque converter clutch should be a fairly routine repair for a transmission shop, but it won’t be cheap because of the labor needed to remove and replace the transmission.
  • Engine Issues: The Montana ranks 13th in reliability out of 17 Pontiac models, with owners making 398 complaints over 11 model years, mostly about engine issues.

In summary, the 2001 Pontiac Montana has several common problems related to the engine and transmission. These issues can be expensive to repair and may require significant labor. Owners should have their vehicle checked immediately as soon as the first symptoms of these problems emerge to prevent costly engine or transmission repairs.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-03-01
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GMDU03E01D
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I BACKED UP TO THE LAUNDRY TO WASH CLOTHES AND PROCEEDED TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND GET OUT TO GET CLOTHES OUT OF THE BACK. I PUSHED THE BRAKE AND THOUGHT I HAD PUT THE CAR IN PARK BECAUSE THE KEY CAME OUT. WHEN I STARTED TO STEP OUT OF THE VAN TO GET MY CLOTHES OUT OF THE BACK AND MY FOOT CAME OFF THE BRAKE, THE CAR WAS STILL RUNNING AND BACKED INTO A BLOCK WALL. THE WALL WAS DESTROYED, BUT NO ONE WAS HURT. THE BACK DOOR OF THE VAN IS CRUSHED. AFTER A CLOSE EXAMINATION OF THE IGNITION LOCK I FOUND THAT THE KEY WILL COME OUT IN ANY POSITION, INCLUDING RUNNING. I HAD THOUGHT THE KEY WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO COME OUT EXCEPT IN THE OFF POSITION. IS THIS CORRECT? I ATTEMPTED TO FIND OUT IF IT WAS IN THE GM RECALL FROM MY LOCAL GM DEALER AND THEY CLAIMED IGNORANCE OF ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. INCLUDING EVEN WHAT CONSTITUTES A DEFECTIVE SWITCH AND WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO AND NOT DO. IT'S LIKE PULLING TEETH TRYING TO GET THEM TO SAY ANYTHING. THEY SAY THE FACTORY SENDS THEM A LIST AFFECTED CARS AND THEY WILL NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE NO MATTER WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCES. THE SMELL OF GASOLINE IS STRONG AT TIMES BUT A CURSORY EXAMINATION BY A MECHANIC DOESN'T SHOW ANYTHING. AFTER VIEWING THE RECALLS CONCERNING GAS LEAKS I AM WORRIED. CAN YOU TELL ME BY THE VIN HOW MANY OF THE RECALLS SHOWN ON YOUR PAGE THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD AND WHAT IT HAS MISSED BEFORE IT BURNS ME TO DEATH? *TR

  • Summary: IN 2010 I LEARNED MY VEHICLE HAD AN OUTSTANDING RECALL NOTICE (07V349000) FOR A DEFECTIVE GAS TANK. I HAD THE TANK REPLACED BY THE DEALER. YESTERDAY EVENING I NOTICED A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE WHEN I STEPPED NEAR MY VEHICLE. I WENT TO MY LOCAL ASE CERTIFIED MECHANIC AND HAD HIM INSPECT THE GAS TANK. HE FOUND IT WAS LEAKING SIGNIFICANTLY AT THE FILLER NECK. I THEN TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER THAT HAD DONE THE REPLACEMENT. I REQUESTED THEY REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE TANK. THE TOLD ME THE WARRANTY WAS GOOD FOR ONLY ONE YEAR OR 12,000 MILES. I TOLD THEM THAT DID NOT MAKE SENSE. THEY REPLACED A SUPPOSEDLY DEFECTIVE UNIT WITH A DEFECTIVE UNIT. THERE IS NO VISIBLE DAMAGE TO THE GAS TANK. I GOT IN TOUCH WITH GM CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPT. AND THEY ADVISED ME TO HAVE THE CAR INSPECTED BY THE DEALER AND WE WOULD PROCEED FROM THERE. THEY WILL CHARGE ME $58 ( I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS TAXABLE OR NOT) TO GET THE BALL ROLLING. THE MILEAGE AT THE TIME OF THE ORIGINAL REPLACEMENT WAS 122,727. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 147,583. THAT EQUATES TO A LITTLE OVER 8,000 MILES PER YEAR, IN FLORIDA. *TR

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-06-16
  • VIN: 1GMDX03E11D
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: MID MAY 2011...I PURCHASED A 2001 PONTIAC MONTANA FROM AN OLDER WOMAN (70-80'S). SHE HAD PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW AND SHE LIVED NEAR TUSCON, ARIZONA. THE VEHICLE WAS/IS IN GREAT CONDITION (NO RUST, ETC.) FOR BEING 10 YEARS OLD...AND HAD ONLY 44,000 MILES ON IT. SINCE I BOUGHT THE VAN...I PUT ON MAYBE 1500 MILES. WITHIN THE FIRST MONTH...I HAD A FEW ISSUES...ONE BEING EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. ON THURSDAY, JUNE 16, 2011 AS I BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY...I NOTICED A WEIRD FEELING WITH THE VAN...ALMOST A SQUISHY FEEL. I THOUGHT I MAYBE HAD A FLAT TIRE. I CHECKED AND IT LOOKED FINE. MY MOM PICKED UP MY 14 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER LATER THAT DAY WITH MY VAN...AND AS SHE WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN FROM A STOP SIGN...SHE SAID THAT IT FELT AS THOUGH THE BACK END OF THE VAN SLID OUT FROM UNDER HER. SHE PULLED OVER AS SHE THOUGHT MAYBE SHE HAD A FLAT TIRE. THAT LOOKED FINE. THEN SHE GOT OUT AGAIN AND RECHECKED THE LUG NUTS ON THE TIRES. THOSE WERE TIGHT. THEN SHE THOUGHT THAT PERHAPS SHE HIT SOMETHING IN THE ROAD. AS SHE TURNED THE VAN AROUND TO CHECK THE INTERSECTION SHE JUST CAME THROUGH...THE VAN WOBBLED HORRIBLY. UPON INSPECTION...THE TRAILING ARM ON THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE WAS BROKEN CLEAN IN HALF. YOU COULD MOVE THE TIRE COMPLETELY AROUND SO IT COULD TOUCH THE ALL PARTS OF THE WHEEL WELL. WE'VE TAKEN IT TO A FEW MECHANICS...AND ALL CANNOT FIGURE WHY OR HOW THAT HAPPENED. ALL OF THEM HAVE SAID, HOWEVER, THAT THIS TRAILING ARM SEEMS TO BE PRETTY THIN METAL WHEN YOU CONSIDER IT'S HOLDING YOUR TIRE ON! AND...THE WAY IT BROKE...IT'S ALMOST AS IF THERE WAS A FLAW FROM THE MANUFACTURER. SINCE THEN...WE HAVE HAD IT WELDED. BUT...I HAVEN'T DRIVEN THE VEHICLE MUCH. I'M EXTREMELY HESITANT WITH MY NOW 15 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER IN THE VAN. I'M SO GRATEFUL THIS INCIDENT DIDN'T HAPPEN ON THE FREEWAY! IT COULD HAVE BEEN A ROLLOVER. WE ARE TRYING TO DISCUSS THIS WITH GM TO SEE WHAT THEY CAN DO. *TT

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-03-28
  • VIN: 1GMDX03EX1D
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2001 PONTIAC MONTANA AND STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE WIRE MOUNTING IN THE TAIL LIGHTS. WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS ARE ON AND I PUSH ON THE BREAK THE TURN SIGNAL LIGHT DIMLY LIGHT ON THE DASH, THEN WHEN I HAVE MY RIGHT TURN SIGNAL ON AND PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE IT BLINKS FAST, ALSO WHEN THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL IS ON THE RIGHT ONE LIGHTS UP ON THE DASH. I FEEL THAT THIS IS HAZARDOUS AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY YOUR COMPANY. WHEN YOU BUILT THE VEHICLE YOU USED PLASTIC WIRE MOUNTINGS AND THEY CAN'T WITHSTAND THE HEAT, THIS ALSO SHORTS OUT MY TRACTION CONTROL IN WHICH IT THEN SHUTS OFF. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING ERROR AND SHOULD BE FIXED BY THE COMPANY TO KEEP YOUR CUSTOMERS HAPPY. THE PART TO FIX THIS PROBLEM IS $55.00. *TR

PROBLEM CAUSED TAIL LAMP CIRCUIT BOARD AND LIGHT BULBS TO BURN OUT AND MELT CONNECTORS. WAS UNABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE PEOPLE ON THE ROAD WOULD NOT KNOW WHEN I WAS BREAKING AND COULD POSSIBLY RUN INTO ME. KNOCKING SOUND ON RIGHT WHEEL AND STEERING WHEEL IS LOOSE. REPLACED STABILIZERS AND SENSORS, ROTATED AND BALANCED WHEELS. SCARED THAT I MAY LOOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR BECAUSE IT CAUSES THE TRACTION TO TURN OFF AND THE VEHICLE SLIDES WHICH COULD LEAD TO A MULTI-CAR ACCIDENT. IT ALSO NEEDS NEW SHOCKS; THEY ARE LEAKING. VEHICLE IS RUNNING HOT AND IS EATING UP THE COOLANT. HAVE ALREADY PUT 2 GALLONS IN THE VEHICLE SINCE SEPT. WATER PUMP IS LEAKING. PASSENGER WINDOW KEEPS GETTING STUCK. DEALERSHIP SAYS THAT THE DOOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT IS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE. THE MAJORITY OF THE PROBLEMS THAT I AM HAVING ARE DUE TO ELECTRICAL ISSUES. IF YOU GOOGLE PROBLEMS WITH THIS PARTICULAR MODEL, YOU WILL FIND THAT THE COMPLAINTS ARE REGARDING THE SAME ISSUES THAT I HAVE STATED. I AM LOW INCOME AND CANNOT AFFORD TO KEEP SPENDING MONEY TO HYPOTHESIZE WHAT IS THE CAUSE. I NEED GM TO FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS VEHICLE. I CAN'T GET OUT OF MY CONTRACT AND THIS VEHICLE IS A ROAD HAZARD. I NOTICED THE ISSUE WITH THE DOOR THE SAME THAT I TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO REPAIR IT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS ON THE INSPECTION REPORT. STILL DISPUTING ISSUE WITH THEM. I NOTICED THE PROBLEM WITH THE WHEEL IN APRIL AND HAVE BEEN CONSTANTLY TAKING IT BACK EVERY SINCE THE FIRST REPAIR WAS DONE. *TR

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND MINI VANS, SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A PASSENGER AIR BAG THAT WAS MANUFACTURED WITHOUT A CHECK VALVE PIN. AN AIR BAG WITHOUT THE CHECK VALVE PIN COULD PRODUCE INCREASED PRESSURE AT THE ONSET OF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND REDUCED PRESSURE AFTERWARD.
  • Consequence: THIS COULD INCREASE THE SEVERITY OF INJURY TO A PERSON WHO WAS NOT PROPERLY RESTRAINED AND WHO WAS CLOSE TO THE PASSENGER AIR BAG AT THE TIME OF DEPLOYMENT. IT COULD ALSO REDUCE THE AB8ILITY OF THE AIR BAG TO PROTECT A RESTRAINED FRONT SEAT PASSENGER.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 16, 2002. • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND MINIVANS. THE PASSENGER AIR BAG INFLATOR MODULES WERE BUILT WITHOUT THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF GENERANT, WHICH PRODUCES THE GAS THAT FILLS THE AIR BAG. SOME WERE BUILT WITH A DOUBLE LOAD OF GENERANT AND SOME WERE BUILT WITHOUT GENERANT.
  • Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THAT WOULD TRIGGER A PASSENGER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, A DOUBLE LOAD OF GENERANT CAN CAUSE THE INFLATOR MODULE TO EXPLODE. This van was decent until it hit 30,000 miles, but unfortunately the general self-sealing tires were bald. Despite rotating them every 6,000 miles, the intake gasket had to be replaced at 31,000 and the brakes were sticking on one side at 37,000. The airbag light came on at 40,000 and I had to take it back twice for that. The battery also had to be replaced at 47,000. Currently, the ABS and traction control lights are coming on. I believe GM should recall the intake gaskets, as everyone I know who owns a Montana has had to replace it. Although I love GM trucks, this will be the last van they sell me.

Despite experiencing a series of issues with the van, I took it to the dealership to have it fixed. Although some parts were replaced, the transmission eventually failed and was replaced at my own expense. Ultimately, I decided to trade it in for something else. I handled the situation with confidence and made the best decision for myself.

I had a bit of a tough time last week when my transmission went out. Unfortunately, this was just the latest in a string of issues I've had with my vehicle. The windshield has been leaking water into the light on the centre roof, the handles on the right sliding door have come off twice, and the right door won't open easily or at all. On top of that, the hood corroded and had to be repainted. The transmission replacement cost me $3672.79, which was quite a lot for a vehicle with just 144.0 kms on it and less than four years old. The original cost was going to be $4300.00, but thankfully the dealer (Popham on the Queensway in Toronto) was able to reduce it. I don't have any issues with the dealership, but I'm starting to lose faith in General Motors as a reliable vehicle manufacturer. It's a shame, as my family has four GM vehicles, but I just don't trust them anymore.

It's great for travelling with both adults and kids, offering plenty of leg room for adults and storage for kids. There are also lots of sturdy cup holders. However, the engine has proven to be unreliable, with the head gaskets having been replaced just 12 months ago. Despite being repaired by a GM Certified Mechanic for overheating 5 times since and having another cracked head, GM has unfortunately not been able to offer any assistance with this recurring and common problem in GM's with DexCool. It's important to do your homework first, as in the two years we've owned it, it's required $5000 in repairs!!!

I drive our 2001 Montana and I really enjoy it. The ride is smooth and the interior is roomy. It has been very reliable and has run smoothly, except for when I had to replace the intake manifold gasket at 60,000 miles due to dry rot. Although the repair cost me $790+, I contacted Pontiac and they reimbursed me 50% of the cost. Recently, the plastic hinge on my glove box door broke and it fell off. I'm also concerned that the fold-down rear seat plastic hinge may be the next to go. When the gasket was being replaced at my local dealer, the mechanic broke the air box and it will have to be replaced. Additionally, I'm having an issue with an engine sensor that indicates a problem with one of three possibilities. Unfortunately, OnStar will no longer work after 12/07. Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience with the Montana!

We're so glad to hear that you've had such great luck with your van! The individual removable seats are incredibly convenient for configuring for different trips or loads, and we couldn't agree more that the ride is incredible. Plus, it's a really nice looking ride! If you're considering getting another Montana, we definitely recommend getting both sides with powered doors. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

  2. Kristoffer Bechtelar 2024-07-20

I never thought I would like a minivan, but this Montana changed the way I think. It's very comfortable, has plenty of pep, great fuel mileage, and is an awesome vehicle for those with kids!!!

  3. Franz Stoltenberg 2024-06-19

I'm so glad you're enjoying your van! The seats are really comfortable, and the folding 3rd seat is definitely a must-have. Traction control and ABS are a great help in the winters of northern Michigan. The sporty exterior design is a plus, and the interior is just lovely. It's great to hear that it's held up well to the kids, and that you're able to pull a camper all summer with ease. I understand that you've had some issues with the engine and transmission, but overall it sounds like it's been a reliable vehicle for you. The red interior dash lighting is a really nice touch too. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  4. Keeley Price 2024-06-16

We have really enjoyed our Pontiac Montana! My wife is the primary driver and uses it mostly for driving around town with our three children. We've even taken it on long trips (CA to TX) and loved the smooth ride, great highway gas mileage, and the TV screen with VHS player. For even longer journeys, we bought an inverter and hooked up the PS2. Other than regular oil changes, we've only had to replace the tires (which were crappy Generals), the front brakes, and the battery. We would definitely consider buying another Pontiac or GM van in the future. The transmission shifts smoothly, it has good low-end torque, and there are lots of fun features inside. Plus, it looks great!

  5. Thomas Crist 2024-05-21

We had a 1999 Montana that unfortunately my wife totaled. While the reliability of that one was spotty, we were hopeful when we got our second Montana. However, this one has been quite troublesome. We've had to replace the A/C condenser twice, the automatic headlights won't go off, and we've had issues with traction control and leaking intake manifold gaskets. Unfortunately, the transmission went at only 58,000 miles, resulting in a repair cost of $1800. Despite writing a long letter and making phone calls to GM, we only received sympathetic responses without any real solutions or reimbursement. As a result, we had to replace the van after only 3 years and 60,000 miles. While it's disappointing, we remain hopeful that GM will continue to improve and succeed in the future.
