The Hyundai Veloster (Korean: 현대 벨로스터, romanized: Hyeondae Belloseuteo) is a compact car first produced in 2011 by Hyundai, with sales beginning in South Korea on March 10, 2011, and in Canada and the United States since the fall of 2011. In South Korea, it was marketed under Hyundai's 'Premium Youth Lab'. It was unveiled on January 10, 2011, at the Detroit Auto Show, and fills the void left when Hyundai discontinued the Hyundai Tiburon after the 2008 model year.

The car differs from most other hatchbacks with its asymmetrical door configuration, featuring one large door on the driver side and two smaller doors on the passenger side. This configuration is more common on commercial vehicles and minivans. In North America, the Veloster was equipped with Blue Link, a new telematics system which will eventually be standard on all Hyundai models. The system is comparable to OnStar in General Motors vehicles, and provides customers with automatic crash notification, vehicle diagnostics, and remote control of vehicle features, among others.

Development and early concepts

HND-3 concept (2007)

The Hyundai HND-3 concept was the third sport compact concept car styled at Hyundai's Design and Technical Center. It included 2.0-liter DOHC Theta inline four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission. The concept car became a Veloster Coupe in 2011.

The car concept was unveiled at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, with the final production version released on January 11 at the Detroit Auto Show. The Veloster is developed under the codename FS, and is built on a modified version of the Cee'd's front-wheel drive platform.

Common 2012 Hyundai Veloster problems

The Hyundai Veloster, a hatchback coupe aimed at younger audiences, has been in production since 2011. While it offers a unique design with one door on the driver's side and two on the passenger side, there have been several problematic years, particularly the 2012 model. Here are some common problems associated with the 2012 Hyundai Veloster:

  • Engine Knocking: One of the most common problems with the 2012 Hyundai Veloster is engine knocking or pinging, which can be caused by various factors such as low-quality fuel, incorrect ignition timing, or a faulty knock sensor. This issue can lead to more severe problems, such as engine damage, if not addressed promptly.
  • Transmission Issues: Many owners have reported transmission troubles, including slippage, high RPMs with poor acceleration, and odd noises. These problems can occur as early as 25,000 miles and are often caused by low-quality transmission fluids, regular driving under heavy loads, or hidden defects.
  • Connecting Rod Failure: The connecting rods, which tie the pistons to the crankshaft and create rotational torque, are not durable enough to withstand high pressure for many years. This can lead to engine failure, especially if you like to run at full throttle frequently.
  • Loss of Power: Some owners have experienced a sudden loss of engine power, which can be dangerous, especially when driving at high speeds. This issue can be caused by various factors, including faulty sensors or electrical problems.
  • Faulty Speakers: The 2012 Hyundai Veloster has also been known to have issues with the speakers, which can stop working without warning, negatively impacting the driving experience.
  • Engine Connecting Rod Breaks: In some cases, the engine connecting rod can break, leading to a full engine replacement, which can cost several thousand dollars. This issue is often caused by stress due to street racing, which raises questions about the engine's durability and reliability under extreme conditions.
  • Poor Bluetooth Connectivity: Owners of the 2013-2015 Hyundai Veloster have reported problems connecting their smartphones, with the connection breaking suddenly or the entertainment system freezing completely.

While the Hyundai Veloster has many positive aspects, such as its stylish design, up-to-date technology solutions, and safety features, it is essential to be aware of these common problems, particularly with the 2012 model. If you are considering purchasing a used Hyundai Veloster, it is crucial to thoroughly research the vehicle's history and consider these potential issues.

  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: In Dec of last year my cars dash lights started flashing no matter which gear I tried the gear would flash on the dash, when I called my extended warranty "car shield ",they recommended that I take it to a repair shop in nearby city and have a diagnostic test performed. I did so,in which after testing they said it was something on side of transmission and they weren't equipped to perform the repairs and needed to be taken to dealership instead. I picked up the vehicle and same issue was present of course, so I had it towed to a dealership and then was contacted by them that they could not do a diagnostic test until the battery was replaced because it was not starting, so I brought a battery and put it on in the place of my old one.I made sure that the vehicle was going to start before leaving and it did with no problem, so I turned it off and was contacted by the dealership saying that it was extensive damage, and car shield had to send out their own personal investigator and they refused to fix any issues and would not pay for diagnostic services or the $10,000 to cover the repairs due to unknown circumstances causing the fuse box next to battery to melt as well as damage to my wiring harness and the wiring harness for the alternator somehow. Now I have a vehicle that I paid for less than a year ago and a no good extended warranty paid for as well and a vehicle with less than 100000 miles that's useless.

Negative 2012 Hyundai Veloster car reviews

My wife and I have owned the car for 4 years, and it has been her trusty commuter car. While we have had some challenges with the local dealership in Tallahassee, we understand that they are focused on making sales. Unfortunately, the warranty has not been as helpful as we had hoped, as it only covers maintenance done at their facility. Despite this, we have taken care of the car and have had to deal with some ECU updates and recalls on the glass roof, brakes, and headlights. The head unit with the radio has also had some issues, such as the volume knob no longer working and the radio cutting off for no reason. Additionally, the cruise control has not always worked as expected. Although the car was advertised at 40 mpg, we have only been able to achieve 32 mpg on our interstate commute. While the resale value was not ideal, we are happy to have moved on from the car.

I bought my Veloster 9 months ago, but unfortunately, I've had to take it to the shop every other month due to recurring problems. Despite visiting the dealer and reaching out to Hyundai Canada, I haven't received any assistance. It's frustrating to have purchased a car that spends more time at the dealer than with me, especially since I'm still making payments. I'm disappointed with Hyundai's lack of responsibility for their faulty merchandise and their poor customer service. I hope to find a resolution soon.

The car has some great features such as good mileage and great brakes. However, there are some areas that could be improved. The suspension is too harsh and the steering feels disconnected. In my opinion, the car is underpowered and the interior looks cheap. Additionally, the navigation system is inaccurate and a rip-off. There are also some issues with rattles in the dashboard and an awful smell coming from the HVAC system. On the positive side, the rear view back up camera is great. Although this was the first sporty car I ever owned and I like the way it looks, I would not buy this car again and would not recommend it. I wish I had experienced driving other sports cars before purchasing it. This is also the first Hyundai I ever purchased and I would be very reluctant to buy a different model Hyundai. An update at 85K miles revealed that the ESC stopped working at around 65K miles and the frozen right front brake caliper needed repair. The sunroof cover slider has also started warping along the sides. However, the gas mileage continues to be great. An update at 105K miles, 3/21, revealed that there have been no further reliability problems of any kind which has upped my opinion of the car. Overall, I have a love/hate relationship with this car.I love the way it handles and looks, but I understand that some of its quirks can be annoying, such as road noise, a harsh ride, and loose interior fittings that can be noisy.

I have owned this car for 5 years and still drive it. Although it has some issues such as transmission surges at low speeds, radio display quitting every 6 months, blind spots all over the car, poor traction in snow, and expensive tire replacement, it is still a reliable car engine-wise. The car still attracts attention while driving and is a good commuting car as long as it doesn't snow. Although there are some issues with the car, it is still a great car to own and drive.

My Veloster has 50,000 miles on it and unfortunately, it has experienced some issues. The parking brake no longer works, the sunroof whistles at highway speeds, and the steering wheel wrap has been peeling up since 20,000 miles. Additionally, I had to skip fourth gear when accelerating because it grinds every time I try, and two speakers have blown. While the navigation button requires a precise touch, the car still gets me where I need to go. Although it has had some problems, I am grateful for the time I have had with it and the memories it has helped me create.

I recently purchased the Turbo and I am absolutely thrilled with it! This car is quick, handles well, and has all the features I was looking for. It's also incredibly fun to drive! The seats are comfortable, even after driving for hours. I tend to drive fast, but this car still gives me good gas mileage even when exceeding the speed limit for long stretches. I've had it up to 120 a couple of times and there's still plenty of throttle to go. Although the car is cold natured and doesn't perform well until the motor is warm, it's a small price to pay for such a fantastic ride. The only minor issue I've had is getting it into 1st gear, but shifting up or down is a breeze. Overall, I've put 6,000 miles on it in just a few months and I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

I just turned 200 miles and I have to say, the car is absolutely fantastic! The shifter and clutch are so light and accurate, making for a really enjoyable driving experience. What's more, the car is incredibly quiet and the ride is excellent. I was worried that the 18

I bought this car used in April of 2013 and I absolutely love it! I did my research, test drove a few different vehicles, but I found myself drawn to this beauty. Some people found that the performance was not to their liking, but I find it quite nice. I don't need a high-performance car and this is a perfect fit. I love everything about it, but what I really love is that you get so much for such a low price. The tech is amazing and I feel spoiled using my push start button and rearview camera. It's a great economic and safe car for 20-year-olds.

I love this car!! It is comfortable, stylish and I love the touch screen. I have no problems with acceleration. It is a 1.6 4 cyl, so it is what I expected. The inside is very cool and has the quality of a high-end car. I have the style package and I am completely happy with it!!!

I purchased the '12 Veloster in NYC and drove it cross-country to LA during my move, accompanied by my girlfriend, two dogs, and more bags than I ever thought it could handle. During a stop at my parents' place midway through the trip, my mother commented that it was like a clown car with the amount of luggage coming out of there. However, if you pack smartly, it's truly remarkable what you can fit. From an appearance standpoint, the Veloster was a little ahead of its time. People either loved it or hated it. Nowadays, three years later, I see a ton of them on the road in LA. Clearly, it's catching on.
