The Hyundai Veloster (Korean: 현대 벨로스터, romanized: Hyeondae Belloseuteo) is a compact car first produced in 2011 by Hyundai, with sales beginning in South Korea on March 10, 2011, and in Canada and the United States since the fall of 2011. In South Korea, it was marketed under Hyundai's 'Premium Youth Lab'. It was unveiled on January 10, 2011, at the Detroit Auto Show, and fills the void left when Hyundai discontinued the Hyundai Tiburon after the 2008 model year.

HND-3 concept (2007)

The Hyundai HND-3 concept was the third sport compact concept car styled at Hyundai's Design and Technical Center. It included 2.0-liter DOHC Theta inline four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission. The concept car became a Veloster Coupe in 2011.

The car concept was unveiled at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, with the final production version released on January 11 at the Detroit Auto Show. The Veloster is developed under the codename FS, and is built on a modified version of the Cee'd's front-wheel drive platform.

An independent consultant found it was caused by an open ball bearing on the steering shaft just under the steering wheel. The bearing did not have proper dust seals and therefore allowed dirt to enter rolling race area cause the binding. This is a Hyundai design fault and should have be subject to a recall.

  • Summary: In Dec of last year my cars dash lights started flashing no matter which gear I tried the gear would flash on the dash,when I called my extended warranty "car shield ",they recommended that I take it to a repair shop in nearby city and have a diagnostic test performed. I did so,in which after testing they said it was something on side of transmission and they weren't equipped to perform the repairs and needed to be taken to dealership instead. I picked up the vehicle and same issue was present of course, so I had it towed to a dealership and then was contacted by them that they could not do a diagnostic test until the battery was replaced because it was not starting, so I brought a battery and put it on in the place of my old one.I made sure that the vehicle was going to start before leaving and it did with no problem, so I turned it off and was contacted by the dealership saying that it was extensive damage, and car shield had to send out their own personal investigator and they refused to fix any issues and would not pay for diagnostic services or the $10,000 to cover the repairs due to unknown circumstances causing the fuse box next to battery to melt as well as damage to my wiring harness and the wiring harness for the alternator somehow. Now I have a vehicle that I paid for less than a year ago and a no good extended warranty paid for as well and a vehicle with less than 100000 miles that's useless.

I had a Body Throttle recall and 5 minutes after it was fixed it broke down and then again a week after and a month after altogether until the body throttle had to be replaced. I had the knock sensor recall done and now it went off code P-1326 is showing with a check engine light and it only drives 62mph. I mean the engine is bad and may catch on fire, and need to be replaced. Yes, the dealer knows and is waiting for my car to be put on the engine replacement list, which has been over 4 months now. There is a lawsuit to change it but Hyundai is not doing it.

If the parking brake is not fully engaged when parked, a manual transmission may move unintentionally, increasing the risk of a crash.

Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some transmission problems and my local dealer hasn't been very helpful. I've been in touch with Hyundai Corp, but they haven't been much help either. Additionally, I've had to change my steering wheel twice already because the leather keeps peeling off. On top of that, my radio gives me issues at times. Have you experienced anything similar with your Veloster?

    In 2012, my husband purchased the Veloster with the intention of finding a car that had good gas mileage but also had a sporty look. To give you an idea, the car has already accumulated 25k miles in less than a year. Unfortunately, within a week of purchasing the car, it died and we discovered antifreeze everywhere. The gasket had to be replaced. We also experienced shaking and vibration issues with the car, which Hyundai was initially reluctant to address. Despite our efforts to resolve the issue through the BBB, we were unsuccessful. Recently, we took the car in for FOUR recalls, including a known issue with the sunroof shattering at high speeds and a safety issue with the rear calipers. Additionally, the mileage was misadvertised, and we now receive a refund check for mileage every so often. It's important to be cautious when purchasing a car. Buyer Beware. Run as fast as you can.

    The car is fun and sporty, but unfortunately, I have experienced some issues. The dual clutch for AT sometimes grinds when shifting, and the transmission can be very jerky in stop-and-go traffic. However, the real problem lies with Hyundai, its dealers, and its warranty. On two occasions, my car was in for an intermittent problem with the misaligned touch screen. Both times, the dealerships (I tried two) claimed to have applied a software fix. After the problem reoccurred, I took it to a third dealer who stated that the fixes were never actually applied. Now, even though the radio is still within the warranty period (it's only 3/36), Hyundai refuses to cover the fix, even though promised work under warranty was never performed.

    I have 11500 miles on my Veloster and I must say, it's everything as advertised! I get about 36 MPG, with 20% city and 80% highway driving. The interior may be a bit cheesy and easy to scratch, but considering the price, it's not a surprise. The Bluetooth works well, although it may fail to connect when you have 2 phones stored. When the moon roof is open, it can be a bit loud, but the stereo system is good and the ride is smooth. The handling is as good as a Mazda Miata, although the pickup from start is a bit slow, but that's to be expected from a 1.6L. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the vehicle!

    My wife and I have owned the car for 4 years, and it has been her trusty commuter car. While we have had some challenges with the local dealership in Tallahassee, we understand that they are focused on making sales. Unfortunately, the warranty has not been as helpful as we had hoped, as it only covers maintenance done at their facility. Despite this, we have taken care of the car and have had to deal with some ECU updates and recalls on the glass roof, brakes, and headlights. The head unit with the radio has also had some issues, such as the volume knob no longer working and the radio cutting off for no reason. Additionally, the cruise control has not always worked as expected. Although the car was advertised at 40 mpg, we have only been able to achieve 32 mpg on our interstate commute. While the resale value was not ideal, we are happy to have moved on from the car.

    UPDATE! I've owned the car for two years now and I'm happy to report that the gas mileage is still great and I haven't had any mechanical issues (knock on wood). However, I do find myself getting tired of the lack of power and the crappy blind spots. Overall though, I still love my car. I bought my 2012 Veloster used with the Hyundai CPO warranty and I must say, I'm really happy with my purchase! The car handles like a dream and is so much fun to drive. The features that this car has are great, especially for the money. It's super fun and fuel efficient!

    I recently discovered this car when I visited a dealership to check out an Elantra. Although I was initially hesitant, I did some research and read some reviews. As someone who commutes 100 miles round trip every day and has three kids, including an infant, I was looking for a car with great MPG and value. After test driving the Veloster, I fell in love with it and ended up purchasing one. It's a lot of fun to drive, and the 6-speed manual is smooth. I've been getting 30 city and 40-44 highway (36-38 combined!) after a solid month of driving. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

    I recently got this car and I must say, I'm really impressed! I traded in my 2005 Saab 9-3 Arc for this one and the Veloster is definitely a step up. The standard features are amazing, from the touch screen to the Bluetooth. Plus, it gets up to 40 mpg's on the highway, which is fantastic! The only thing I miss is the speed from my last car, but the Veloster handles extremely well and grips the road firmly, which I really like. Overall, I'm 100% happy with this car and I'm glad that companies like Hyundai understand the importance of 'value' and try to offer customers everything at an amazing price point. It even turns heads!

    I purchased this car on 10/13/11 and I still haven't had a single complaint. While some reviews may point to 'poor acceleration' or other issues, I have to say that for what I was looking for, it is completely satisfactory. I was searching for a good-looking car that had good to great gas mileage, and the Veloster fits the bill perfectly. I absolutely adore the design of the Veloster, especially the rear end. When you get inside, you would think you are riding in a car that costs twice as much. The seats are very comfortable, and everything you touch feels like it has a high-end quality to it. I've had a few people in the back seat with no issues or complaints whatsoever. I simply love the number of people who have pulled up next to me asking what it is!

    I've had this little car since April this year and it has mostly met my expectations. It's a very comfortable ride and easy to maneuver. Depending on the highway surface, you may experience some side-to-side drifting, but just hang onto the steering wheel. I'm not sure if it's the tires or not. Like most other reviews, the one exception is the power performance factor. All I can say is, if you're looking for power, you should get a V8 because this little car is not very powerful. However, if you're looking for good mileage, this car is a great choice. I'm averaging roughly 37 mpg, but I mostly do highway driving. All in all, it's a good buy, but if power is important to you, you may want to consider sacrificing some mpg for a little more power.
