Toyota Highlander problems

The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger (Japanese: トヨタ・クルーガー, Hepburn: Toyota Kurūgā), is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by Toyota since 2000.
Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUV or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota's best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006.
The first-generation model was sold in Japan as the Kluger, which was exclusive to dealership network called Toyota Netz as a larger alternative to the RAV4. The Kluger nameplate is also used in Australia because "Highlander" is a trademarked trim line name owned by Hyundai. The name is derived from the German word klug, which means smart or clever (Klüger – with diacritics – means "someone who is smarter than another" in German).

Common Toyota Highlander problems
The Toyota Highlander is a popular SUV, but like any vehicle, it can have its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:
- Ruptured Oil Line: Another significant concern raised by Highlander owners is a ruptured oil line, which can also cause engine failure. The most affected model years are 2005 to 2013, and replacement parts have been known to exhibit the same issues. The issue can result in other engine complications if not repaired in time.
- Air Conditioner Problems: Air conditioner problems occur when the system fails to regulate interior temperature conditions. The issue occurs as a result of regulator defects, and the best solution is having the thermostat housing replaced.
- Brake Failure: Brake failure is another common problem with the Toyota Highlander. Soft or stiff brake pedals, rough shifting, or brake light warnings are signs of brake defects. Calling a mechanic for car diagnosis might help to address these problems.
- Fuel Tank and A/C Condenser Issues: The 2020 redesign has been reported to have issues with its fuel tank. Owners have complained about being unable to fill the tank to its maximum capacity of 17.1 gallons. There have also been reports about a damaged air conditioning (A/C) condenser, which prevented the A/C system from blowing cool air.
- Defective Airbags: Defective airbags were common in some 2013 and 2016 Highlanders. Airbags from these model years did not deploy upon collision, increasing the risk of injuries.
- Excessive Wind Noise: Excessive wind noise is a common problem associated with 2017 Toyota Highlanders. Owners have reported hearing loud squealing and whistling noises from inside the cabin, which may be due to the side mirrors or loose door moldings.
- Oil Leaks and Loss of Oil Pressure: Oil leaks and loss of oil pressure are common in 2005-2013 Highlanders. Drivers have reported seeing a puddle of engine oil below their vehicles and smelling burning oil inside the cabin. These issues were usually caused by a faulty variable valve timing-intelligent (VVT-i) gear and a ruptured oil cooler line.
- Threads for Engine Bolts Stripped: This is the most reported problem for the 2003 Toyota Highlander, with an average cost to fix of $3,200 and an average mileage of 123,000 mi.
- Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a common problem for the 2017 Highlander, with an average cost to fix of $8,600 and an average mileage of 39,000 mi.
It is important to note that not all Toyota Highlanders will experience these problems, and many owners have reported high levels of satisfaction with their vehicles. However, being aware of these common issues can help potential buyers make informed decisions and take proactive steps to maintain their vehicles.
Does the Toyota Highlander have any problems?
Engine failure, more generally, is also one of the more significant issues with Toyota Highlanders. Those failures are probably related to the engine bolts being stripped and causing overheating issues, but other problems can also lead to engine failure.
What year did the Toyota Highlander have problems?
Engine misfire is a common issue found in 2001-2005, 2007-2008, 2010, and 2013 Highlanders. Many drivers have also complained about their Toyota trembling and jerking upon acceleration. Mechanics found that these issues were usually caused by a bad ignition coil.
What is the best years for a Toyota Highlander?
Best Toyota Highlander Model Years

I was told at the dealer that I have to contact the Toyota dealers until I get the opportunity to get it paint. I was told that I had to contact any Toyota dealer until I get a date of acceptance. The recall period is almost over (Nov 2024) I was told and I will put a claim on Toyota Corporation for not making sure all the vehicles are completely painted. When I looked online, this is a well known issue on Toyota Highlanders, especially hybrids like ours and Toyota has done nothing to fix this dangerous problem. They have even told car owners to drive slower but I can tell you it doesn’t seem to matter if I’m going 25 mph or faster or slower- the car gives no notice and goes FASTER while you are trying to stop!!!!! Please help us Toyota Highlander owners!!!! This car gives us no warning whatsoever. It is not consistent. But when it does this it is VERY scary!

Vehicle year: 2014
The 2014 Highlander XLE AWD has what it takes to be successful. It has a decent pick up, which is not very sporty, but that's what you get when driving a big car. The best aspect of the pick up is when you are merging on a freeway and it delivers. It also has cool interiors and nice safety features, which may be annoying to some. For example, you cannot set a route on the navigation unless the vehicle is at a full stop. However, you can speak to the voice command to set the via route. The voice may need some training, but overall, it's a great feature. The ride is smooth and quieter than any other big car I have driven. The seats are very comfortable, and the handling is nice. Of course, it has the Toyota reliability.

Vehicle year: 2009
I've owned this car for over 7 months now and I love it more every day. At first, I was concerned about blind spots, but the big rear mirrors ease that worry. It's a great highway cruiser, which was my main purpose for buying it. The drive is smooth, although not sporty, and the V6 engine has good power. It does lean quite a bit in sharp turns, but the light steering and average steering response make it feel secure on the road. The keyless start and power hatch are great features for everyday use. Most of the materials used are of good quality, although some of the textured hard plastic could be improved. Overall, I find it better than comparable models from FORD and GM. The truck space is tight when the 3rd row seat is up, which is not split and has tight leg room. The center seat in the 2nd row is too small, but the outside seats are comfy.

Vehicle year: 2008
We bought this vehicle used in 2013, when we found out we were having our first child, and it has proven to be a reliable and solid choice. Since then, we've put around 63,000 miles on it, and apart from regular maintenance items like the water pump and ignition coils, we've only spent about $1,500 on it. While the ride and road noise aren't the best, they're not terrible either. Overall, I would say that this vehicle has served us well, although it's not the most exciting choice out there.

Vehicle year: 2016
I recently traded in my 2005 Honda CRV, which I had driven for 11 years, and purchased a Highlander XLE. I am absolutely in love with this car! The ride is incredibly comfortable and smooth. The second-row seats are spacious and cozy, with two separate seats that are perfect for long drives. The technology is user-friendly and easy to set up, and I especially love how the audio Bluetooth works seamlessly with my music downloads on my iPhone. Toyota has truly won me back with this high-quality vehicle, which is also a great value. Driving it is an absolute pleasure. While I haven't had it for very long, I have high expectations for Toyota's renowned reliability. As a 65-year-old retiree, I am looking forward to many happy years of driving my new Highlander.

Vehicle year: 2018
I purchased the 2018 Highlander because of its many standard features, great reviews, and competitive pricing. It's important to buy what you like, regardless of the price, to ensure your satisfaction. The Highlander has many impressive features, including a comfortable interior, powerful engine, and advanced safety features. As someone who previously owned a 2010 Explorer, I found it overwhelming to test drive and compare all the new features on different vehicles. It takes time to get to know a new vehicle properly. After considering other options like Jeep and Kia, I ultimately chose the Highlander. While some reviews mentioned that there are many beeping sounds, these are all expected safety alerts, such as seat belt reminders and lane departure warnings. I appreciate the adaptive cruise control and collision alert, which have already proven useful in preventing accidents. The lane departure system nudges the wheel in the right direction, but ultimately, the driver is in control. Overall, I am very satisfied with the Highlander, which has great features like automatic headlights, ample legroom, reliable GPS, and a sleek design. The only downside is the road noise on some highways, which I am investigating to determine if it's due to the Toyo tires or another factor.I spent 8 hours driving on Highways this weekend and unfortunately, I found the road noise to be quite bothersome, especially on 91N and 89 through VT. The road noise seemed to be caused by the rough surface of the road. This is something I have not experienced with previous vehicles, including the 2010 Ford Explorer I drove for 142k miles with various tires. Additionally, I found that the JBL speakers were not up to par. Despite my best efforts to adjust the settings, I could not get the sound quality to my liking. The front speakers seemed to bounce off the windshield and the whole system was tuned too much for bass. During test drives, I never tried the stereo assuming it would be good enough and didn't want to spend too much time checking all these things. I was wrong. I would love to hear other reviews and comments on the road noise and sound system. On a positive note, I think the styling of the Highlander is great and I really like the interior. The driver's seat is also very comfortable and adjustable in many ways. Overall, I like the Highlander a lot, but the road noise is a big issue for me. If it were reduced, it would greatly improve the sound system. With only 2150 miles, I've gotten to know it quite well and I hope this review helps someone.

The navigation system and voice commands are not functioning properly. Despite having purchased the vehicle in late October, there are no voice commands available with the navigation system. Additionally, every time the vehicle is turned off during a route, the voice commands are lost and it is necessary to go through a series of steps to reactivate the system with voice. The alternative is to continue with the map without voice commands, which is not a safe situation. Despite having brought the vehicle back to the dealer three times, the issue has not been resolved. However, Toyota is aware of the problem and is working on a solution. I am confident that they will get back to me as soon as they have a fix.

It's frustrating to have a vehicle that makes an annoying buzzing sound, especially when the dealer and Toyota customer support have not been helpful. Fortunately, we are not alone in this experience, and there are forums available where we can find support and advice. I am sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing with your Multifunction Display. It must have been frustrating to have taken it to the dealership and not have the issue resolved even after a software upgrade. I understand that you have contacted Toyota Customer Service and had a case number assigned, but unfortunately, you did not receive a response from them. It is disappointing to hear that your problem was sent to the National level for review and still did not receive any help from Toyota, despite being within the warranty period. As someone who has owned a number of Toyotas and keeps their highlander serviced, it is understandable that you expected better customer service. I appreciate you sharing your experience and advice with others. Thank you for choosing Toyota and I hope we can improve our services in the future.

I recently purchased a new car from Toyota and unfortunately, I have been experiencing an issue with an annoying buzzing sound coming from the dashboard every 15-30 seconds. Despite being promised that the additional warranties would cover all electrical issues, I have been informed by the dealer that this is a known issue and that they have lost a couple of potential buyers due to it. I understand that these things can happen, but I was hoping that Toyota could come up with a fix as soon as possible. I appreciate your time and attention to this matter. Thank you.

The Toyota Highlander has some areas that could be improved. Firstly, the car's entry and exit could be made easier to avoid hitting one's head. Secondly, the wind noise on both rear doors could be reduced. Thirdly, the seat belt alarm could be less loud and irritating. Fourthly, the programming of the car could be made more user-friendly. Lastly, the feature that shuts down the engine while at a stop light could be made optional. It is important to note that the dealership experience was not satisfactory. Despite these issues, the Toyota Highlander is a reliable car that offers great value for money.
