Toyota Highlander problems

The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger (Japanese: トヨタ・クルーガー, Hepburn: Toyota Kurūgā), is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by Toyota since 2000.

Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUV or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota's best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006.

The first-generation model was sold in Japan as the Kluger, which was exclusive to dealership network called Toyota Netz as a larger alternative to the RAV4. The Kluger nameplate is also used in Australia because "Highlander" is a trademarked trim line name owned by Hyundai. The name is derived from the German word klug, which means smart or clever (Klüger – with diacritics – means "someone who is smarter than another" in German).

Common Toyota Highlander problems

The Toyota Highlander is a popular SUV, but like any vehicle, it can have its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Ruptured Oil Line: Another significant concern raised by Highlander owners is a ruptured oil line, which can also cause engine failure. The most affected model years are 2005 to 2013, and replacement parts have been known to exhibit the same issues. The issue can result in other engine complications if not repaired in time.
  • Air Conditioner Problems: Air conditioner problems occur when the system fails to regulate interior temperature conditions. The issue occurs as a result of regulator defects, and the best solution is having the thermostat housing replaced.
  • Brake Failure: Brake failure is another common problem with the Toyota Highlander. Soft or stiff brake pedals, rough shifting, or brake light warnings are signs of brake defects. Calling a mechanic for car diagnosis might help to address these problems.
  • Fuel Tank and A/C Condenser Issues: The 2020 redesign has been reported to have issues with its fuel tank. Owners have complained about being unable to fill the tank to its maximum capacity of 17.1 gallons. There have also been reports about a damaged air conditioning (A/C) condenser, which prevented the A/C system from blowing cool air.
  • Defective Airbags: Defective airbags were common in some 2013 and 2016 Highlanders. Airbags from these model years did not deploy upon collision, increasing the risk of injuries.
  • Excessive Wind Noise: Excessive wind noise is a common problem associated with 2017 Toyota Highlanders. Owners have reported hearing loud squealing and whistling noises from inside the cabin, which may be due to the side mirrors or loose door moldings.
  • Oil Leaks and Loss of Oil Pressure: Oil leaks and loss of oil pressure are common in 2005-2013 Highlanders. Drivers have reported seeing a puddle of engine oil below their vehicles and smelling burning oil inside the cabin. These issues were usually caused by a faulty variable valve timing-intelligent (VVT-i) gear and a ruptured oil cooler line.
  • Threads for Engine Bolts Stripped: This is the most reported problem for the 2003 Toyota Highlander, with an average cost to fix of $3,200 and an average mileage of 123,000 mi.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a common problem for the 2017 Highlander, with an average cost to fix of $8,600 and an average mileage of 39,000 mi.

It is important to note that not all Toyota Highlanders will experience these problems, and many owners have reported high levels of satisfaction with their vehicles. However, being aware of these common issues can help potential buyers make informed decisions and take proactive steps to maintain their vehicles.

We need to stop and brake and not go forward. It does this unexpectedly with no notice and does not always do it consistently but we have noticed it is getting worse and worse and we are worried we will hit another car in front or even a person because the car will not stop on time. When I looked online, this is a well known issue on Toyota Highlanders, especially hybrids like ours and Toyota has done nothing to fix this dangerous problem. They have even told car owners to drive slower but I can tell you it doesn’t seem to matter if I’m going 25 mph or faster or slower- the car gives no notice and goes FASTER while you are trying to stop!!!!! Please help us Toyota Highlander owners!!!! This car gives us no warning whatsoever. It is not consistent. But when it does this it is VERY scary!

    Vehicle year: 2015

My husband and I were thrilled when we purchased our 2015 Toyota Highlander. However, we have recently noticed a buzzing sound in the cabin, which has become more noticeable during long trips. Even my daughter sitting in the back seat asked me about it. I have reached out to Toyota via email to address this issue, but have not received a response yet. We are now considering trading in our Highlander for another vehicle.

I had a difficult experience with my Toyota Highlander when it broke down on I95 during heavy traffic at night, before its 5000 mile check. Unfortunately, I was unable to fully move into the breakdown lane and had to wait for 30 minutes before the tow truck arrived. Although it was a stressful time, the Westport dealership and Toyota Corporate were able to diagnose the problem as a faulty transmission. Although there were some issues with the shipping of the new transmission, they were able to install it and get my car back on the road. While it was a frustrating experience, I appreciate the effort that Toyota made to fix the issue and get me back on the road. I am still a loyal Toyota customer and look forward to continuing my relationship with them.

I recently purchased a brand new Toyota Highlander Limited Platinum (2019) on February 6th 2019. Unfortunately, a few days after I got it, the Navigation system started malfunctioning and eventually stopped responding altogether. Despite going through the dealer manual and checking if I had accidentally turned something off, the issue persisted. After some online research, I discovered that I was not the only one experiencing this problem. It turns out that Toyota has been aware of this issue since December of 2018, yet continued to sell the new 2019 models without disclosing it. Although I have brought it back to the dealer three times for service, I was informed that there is currently no fix for the problem. I contacted the main office of Toyota and they provided me with a case number and a contact person. The representative informed me that she will keep me updated on any changes regarding the navigation system and voice response. While I could try to put it in for the lemon law, she advised me to read my State's Lemon Laws carefully, stating that the navigation system/voice response system is not a necessity. However, as a $48,000 car, it affects the value and safety if you want to use it since you have to look at the screen while driving. It does not direct you at all. I would not have purchased the car if I had known that it had this problem, but it was never disclosed to me. The dealer informed me that it was out of their hands and I could not return the car to them. Now, I have to go through all the hoops for Lemon Law to try to get my money back because I have no idea when they will come up with a fix for this problem. Toyota suggested a roundabout way of using it, which is to press the ignition switch 2x without my foot on the brake, then put my foot on the brake and start the car. It will work until the car is shut off again. But I have noticed that the navigation system/voice response does not seem to provide accurate information or understand my requests. This could potentially decrease the value of the car if I were to sell it. If you happen to know anyone interested in purchasing a Toyota Highlander, I would advise caution and recommend they consider other options.

We recently replaced our 2011 Highlander with a brand new 2023 model. Unfortunately, the 2023 only comes with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which we found to be quite disappointing. Our 2011 Highlander had a V6 engine that was smooth and quiet, so the noisy and hesitant performance of the new engine was a letdown. We didn't notice any issues for the first few thousand miles, but eventually, the engine started to hesitate and buck when accelerating from a stop. We brought it to the dealer, who assured us that a fix was on the way, but unfortunately, it still hasn't been resolved even after 10,000 miles. Despite this experience, we remain loyal Toyota customers and have always had the utmost confidence in their products. However, we do hope that they will reconsider their direction with these green engines. In the end, we decided to trade in our 2023 model for a 2022 XSE Highlander with the V6 engine, and the difference is like night and day. It runs as smooth as butter, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. We did take a loss, but we appreciate Toyota for working with us and making things right.

I recently purchased this SUV, but unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. Despite being a new vehicle with only 19,000 miles, I have had to bring it in for service four times already. The driver's side window rubber fell off and the window fell off the track, which was inconvenient. Additionally, I received a warning on my screen about the power steering and ABS. While I am disappointed with these issues, I am hopeful that the dealership will be able to resolve them. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

My experience with buying a Toyota was not what I expected. Despite my initial belief that they hold their value, I lost $15000 from purchase price to trade in over 2 years. The gas mileage was also not as good as I had hoped, with only 17 around town and 25 on the highway. Additionally, the gas pedal is sensitive and the transmission doesn't shift into low by itself when going up a steep driveway. Toyota's policy on chrome parts blistering is also disappointing, as they only cover it for 3 years. Finally, I found the GPS difficult to program and expensive to update, and would recommend using your smartphone instead. However, I am confident that Toyota can improve on these issues in the future.

I have a 2002 Highlander and I have put 283K miles on it. Recently, the A/C stopped working and I thought about buying a different car, but nothing else seemed to satisfy me. So, I decided to buy a 2013 Highlander with only 30K miles on it. It has plenty of cargo space and head/leg room, and handles great. You wouldn't even know it's only a 4cyl. The fuel mileage is much better than advertised, as we are getting an average of 25.5 combined. I absolutely love my Highlander!

This is a sharp-looking vehicle that rides excellently and has been very low maintenance so far. Just remember to change your oil and you're good to go. The visibility when driving is excellent. Even though it's just a 4-cylinder, I find it more than sufficient for my needs. It has great get-up-and-go, and I usually win at red lights. The gas mileage is also excellent for an SUV-like vehicle. I've gotten as high as 30 mpg and usually get between 24 to 27 mpg. I love it! Although, I did have two or three specks of paint that popped off when I first got it, but they were fixed and everything else has been excellent.

This is our 2nd Highlander. My wife and I liked the 2001 so much that we decided to buy the 2007 before the upcoming redesign. The size and practicality are perfect for our family. We live in upstate NY, so 4-wheel drive is important, but the vehicle never goes off-road, so we don't need a heavy 4x4 SUV. The Highlander meets all of our needs.

We decided to get another Toyota, this time the Highlander, and we absolutely love it! It's the perfect size - not too big, not too small - and it handles smoothly, giving us a feeling of security. We highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a safe and reliable 4-wheeler with a ride comparable to a Lexus. It's incredibly comfortable and we can't get enough of it. You won't regret buying this car - it's definitely worth it! We couldn't find any negatives about it.
