2005 Chevrolet Express problems
The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.
In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.
Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

Common 2005 Chevrolet Express problems
The 2005 Chevrolet Express is a popular choice for small business owners due to its reliability and cargo space. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems.
One of the most significant issues with the 2005 Chevrolet Express is the excessive oil consumption of the 5.3L Vortec 5300 engine, which was used from 2010 to 2014. This problem was caused by multiple design flaws that led to an excessive oil consumption, resulting in soiled spark plugs, bent pushrods, and timing chain wear. The issue was compounded by an inadequate oil supply, which caused the engine to work harder and consume more oil.
Another common problem with the 2005 Chevrolet Express is the Passlock security system, which has been known to cause issues with the ignition system. The Passlock system is designed to prevent theft by disabling the ignition if the correct key is not used. However, it has been known to cause problems with the ignition system, preventing the vehicle from starting or causing it to stall while driving. This issue can be frustrating for owners, as it can be difficult to diagnose and repair.
Fuel pump failure is another common problem with the 2005 Chevrolet Express, particularly in the 1999 model. Three complaints have been filed regarding fuel pump failure in this model, which can cause the vehicle to stall or fail to start. This issue can be costly to repair, as it typically requires replacing the entire fuel pump module.
Paint issues are also common with the 2005 Chevrolet Express. Two complaints have been filed regarding peeling paint, and three complaints have been filed regarding paint flaking off. These issues can be cosmetic, but they can also lead to more significant problems, such as rust and corrosion.
Torque converter failure is another issue that has been reported with the 2005 Chevrolet Express, particularly in the 2009 model. Two complaints have been filed regarding torque converter failure, which can cause the vehicle to lose power or stall while driving. This issue can be costly to repair, as it typically requires replacing the entire torque converter.
Finally, poor paint quality has been reported with the 2005 Chevrolet Express. Two complaints have been filed regarding poor paint quality, which can be cosmetic but can also lead to more significant problems, such as rust and corrosion.
In summary, the 2005 Chevrolet Express has several common problems, including excessive oil consumption, Passlock security issues, fuel pump failure, paint issues, torque converter failure, and poor paint quality. While these issues can be frustrating for owners, they are relatively common for vehicles of this age and type. It is essential to stay up-to-date on recalls and maintenance to ensure that the vehicle remains safe and reliable.
Is the Chevy Express reliable?
The Chevrolet Express 3500 Reliability Rating is 2.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 13th out of 21 for commercial vans. The average annual repair cost is $1,013 which means it has poor ownership costs. The frequency of repairs is average, but when issues do arise, they are more likely to be severe than with other models.
How long do Chevy Express engines last?
If you have a 4.3 V6 250,000 miles would be good. If you have a 4.8L, 5.3L or 6.0L V8 all are LS based engines. Those engines if cared for properly 300,000 is not uncommon. If you drive it like you stole it all the time you will be lucky to make 150,000 miles.
What engine does a Chevy Express use?
V6 engine
The 2021 Chevrolet Express includes a more-than-adequate 4.3-liter, V6 engine that easily achieves 276 horsepower and 298 pound-foot of torque with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
When did they stop making Chevy Express?
2025
The Chevrolet Express will Be No More in 2026
GM is considering electrifying the future of its commercial fleet, so the last Chevrolet Express will stop being manufactured after 2025.

- Summary: Hole warn in front passenger side brake line from battery cable going to engine starter motor. The shielding on electrical cable rubbed and wore a hole in the brake line causing fluid to flow out and caused brakes to fail. No one was injured and no accident. I was backing out of the driveway the brakes failed, next I saw a large puddle of fluid on driveway, I just put it in park. The battery cable crosses over the break line and both are fastened to the frame near each other. I can provide break line and photo. The van has 60,000 miles on it, I purchased it new in 2005.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-17
- VIN: 1GAGG25UX51
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Paint is peeling from ALL parts of the exterior vehicle, even around the window frames and door frames! It appears that NO PAINT PRIMER was used, at all! My white van has missing paint from about 75% of the vehicle, with bubbling going on, in the remainder of paint that has yet to fall off! Looking at ANY Chevy van that is on the roadways, one can easily see that the paint has also been falling off those vehicles, as well! This is a well-known defect in the painting practices of most ALL Chevrolet Vans, and should be dealt with on a class-action basis, since all Chevrolet Van owners are forced to live with an inferior paint scheme on these vehicles! But new owners are not aware of these shortcomings, until they see the paint fall off their vans, for no apparent reason! And it is clearly seen that NO PAINT PRIMER was used, when you look at the paint chip that fell off! Shame on Chevrolet and shame on the NHTSA agency for allowing any auto manufacturer to put out such inferior products to unsuspecting consumers!

I love my van! It's so versatile and can handle any terrain, even in the snow. Living on an 800ft gravel drive that's plowed by our farm tractor has never been an issue for my trusty van. It comfortably fits six kids, two dogs, and two adults, making it perfect for family outings. The only downside is the cost of gas.
-
Great for hauling kids, dogs, and everything. Also, the 300hp is great for pulling our 31 ft. 7800 lb. camper. It looks tough too.
-
This is a great vehicle for families and offers good value when compared to a Suburban. Even with the 4.3L V6, it performs well, although the available V8 would probably be even better. The locking rear axle makes winter driving very manageable, and the optional 4-wheel disk brakes are a welcome addition to stop this 5300lb truck.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I bought this van used for my plumbing business and I'm really happy with it. The AWD is incredible in the snow, even better than any of the 4x4 trucks I've had in the past. It rides great, gets decent gas mileage at 14-15 MPG, and drives really nicely. The only thing I wish is that it came in an extended version. Thanks for listening!

If you're looking for power, great looks, and tons of room without being lumped into the soccer mom mini van crowd, this is the van for you! But what about the poor gas mileage? Check out any dealer lot and see how many thousands of dollars you'll save over their mini van counterparts. Yes, enough to offset many years of 'mediocre' gas mileage.

I have the small V-8 and its gas mileage is okay. When I have a lot of weight in it, the engine has a hard time. However, when it gets on the expressway, it's gone. I have the cargo van, and it's very roomy and fun to drive. I would definitely recommend it to anyone!

This car has had several issues since day one, including a check engine light, pulling to the right, warm air from the A/C, engine tapping, transmission slipping into reverse, loose window, peeling bowtie, and moisture in the blinker. Additionally, there have been multiple repairs on the right side sliding doors, tierod and gas pedal assembly replacements, a completely rebuilt differential, and issues with the glove box lock assembly and rear door windows leaking water. The rear jack cover also keeps falling off and the seat belt retainers have all broken off. The gas tank cap assembly and gas gauge have also required replacement. Despite these challenges, we have been able to identify and address the root cause of the current issue, which is related to the fuel system. We are confident in our ability to resolve this issue and ensure that the car is running smoothly. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

One issue I have encountered with this vehicle is the lack of available aftermarket products such as bug shields or hood bras. Additionally, the body is constructed with thinner metal than what I would consider normal, especially when compared to my Dodge van. The way the plastic interior walls interlock is also disappointing, as some pieces just lay in place without any interlocking mechanism. Furthermore, the oil change light is not very useful to me as it only goes off at 7000 miles, while I prefer to change my oil every 3000 miles. Lastly, for shorter individuals, the step up into the vehicle can be difficult without holding onto the seat and pulling oneself in. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the vehicle for its other features.

Our family van is our second express. The first one was a 1999 12-passenger van, and the current one is a 2011 15-passenger van. We don't have any reason to sell it other than the fact that it's a little old to take on cross-country trips. It's great for local trips to Lowe's with the seats out or to a family event with all or some of the seats back in. We drive it every day, but we don't want to pay the sticker price of a new one since they really haven't changed much over the years.
