jeep logo

The Jeep Renegade is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by Stellantis under their Jeep marque. It was first shown to the public in March 2014 at the Geneva Motor Show and production started in late August of that year. The Renegade was the smallest vehicle currently marketed by Jeep, until the arrival of the Avenger. It slots between the Avenger and the Compass. It is based on the FCA Small Wide 4×4 platform which is also shared with other FCA models, including from Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands.

The Renegade came standard with front-wheel drive, with optional four-wheel drive systems Active Drive I and Active Drive Low, both of which are paired with Jeep's Selec-Terrain System.

Overview

The Renegade is the first Jeep product to be produced exclusively outside of North America and has been sold in the North American, European, Brazilian, South African, Australian, Japanese and Chinese markets. The vehicle is built in Melfi, Italy with the designation BU/520, alongside the related Fiat 500X; Goiana, Brazil with the designation B1 (alongside Jeep Compass and Fiat Toro); and in Guangzhou, China codenamed BQ.

Standard Renegade models come with front-wheel drive, with four-wheel drive available on Sport, Latitude and Limited trims. In the US, the lineup consists of Sport, Latitude and Limited trims, all of which come with a choice of front- and four-wheel drive, as well as the Trailhawk trim, which is 4WD only.

The Renegade has an available My Sky dual-panel removable roof. The My Sky can be either retracted like a standard sunroof or removed completely for a more open-air experience, similar to that of the Jeep Wrangler.

Common 2020 Jeep Renegade problems

The 2020 Jeep Renegade has been reported to have several common problems that affect its performance and reliability. These issues are based on complaints from owners and can help potential buyers make informed decisions about this vehicle.

  • Frozen Stereo System: Some 2020 Jeep Renegade owners have reported a frozen stereo system, which can occur within the first 1,000 miles of use. The software in the stereo system may lock up from time to time, requiring a restart to function correctly again. Most dealerships will update the software for free, while others may charge around $50 for labor.
  • Excessive Wheel Noise: Another issue with the 2020 Jeep Renegade is excessive wheel noise, which can occur at around 20,000 miles. This problem is due to the wheel bearings wearing out more quickly than in other SUVs, leading to a lot of noise. Replacing the wheel bearings can cost around $350, depending on local labor rates.
  • Engine Problems: The 2020 Jeep Renegade has been reported to have engine problems, although these issues are more prevalent in earlier model years. For example, the 2015 Jeep Renegade has the most overall complaints, with engine problems being the worst category. The most-reported problem is with the 2018 Jeep Renegade for excessive oil consumption, which can cost around $1,600 to fix at an average mileage of 21,000.
  • Transmission Issues: The Cherokee and Renegade's 9-speed transmission suffers from hard shifts, lurching problems, and a wiring harness defect that can cause sudden shutdowns or other issues. These transmission problems can lead to significant repair costs and are a common complaint among Jeep Renegade owners.

In conclusion, the 2020 Jeep Renegade has several common problems that can affect its performance and reliability. These issues include check engine lights, frozen stereo systems, excessive wheel noise, engine problems, and transmission issues. While these problems can be frustrating for owners, it is essential to be aware of them when considering purchasing this vehicle. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help mitigate these issues and ensure the longevity of the 2020 Jeep Renegade.

The firefighters opened the door to evacuate the contact and her children. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
  • VIN: ZACNJBC18LP
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My touchscreen has begun to have an issue wherein the center of the screen displays as discolored, sometimes has lines running through the display, and sometimes glitches in such a way that items on the screen are in different spots than usual. The warped view of the screen is a nuisance; however, what is even more of a safety issue is that it affects the reliability of the backup camera. While of course I must still turn my head to physically look behind me while backing up, the fact that the backup camera cannot be safely used is a major defect. My car is 4 years old, has never been in any accidents or collisions, and there is no reason that the display should be malfunctioning already. I have not had this issue with the display inspected whatsoever. There were no warnings of this defect, it simply appeared one day out of nowhere about 4 weeks ago.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-02-02
  • VIN: ZACNJBB17LP
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: Go to step on gas to accelerate my jeep it will limp backwards on speed then all of a sudden take off like a rocket, jerking everybody in the car like g force, jerking head & necks, also driving down the road car has several times shut completely off, having me to pull vehicle over to side of road, & restarting the car.I I’ve had radio system shut completely off by itself for no reason. I have had the vehicle in to shop several times, they put on computer system, to recheck and redo computer, they call me to pick it up next day & still jerking like g- force hesitating & taking off like a rocket, took it back three times they said they put power steering fluid in it, well guess what not fixed. I have less than 30k miles on vehicle, & this has been going on since under 11k miles. Now when you stop and put vehicle in park the vehicle jumps forward & backwards, like you slammed your brakes on, several times my car has almost hit my garage door or in a parking garage the wall, or a parked car, the steering is very loose, & touchy, also noise like clunking in the wheel well, my friend said sounds like the springs. the tie rods & wheel bearings have been checked and are fine, now I’m scared the springs may break & drop the car around the wheels. I don’t drive far my town, is 5 minutes away so like 20 miles when I go out, I’m retired so car is just driven to the store or family’s. Sometimes I’m scared to drive it. My fiancé that just passed away sept 2023, said the jerking g/force is something to do with the drive train, transmission. the car shutting off is a dangerous thing to happen when your driving down the highway. I feel this 2020 jeep has a lot of dangerous complications. I’m not sure if someone has gotten seriously hurt yet, but from what I’ve heard a couple of my friends had same problems & traded in & reading people complaints have same problem, power train should be recalled. this car is a big headache, that I can’t afford. I feel you need to replace my car

  • Summary: UNKNOWN- When phone is connected to car and navigation is used the screen in car freezes, lags and turns the radio off and on. It happens too many times to keep count as I drive for a living. I took my jeep into the dealership to address the problem and get it fixed. The dealership told me they are aware of the problem. They had already tried to fix the problem on several jeeps, and they were brought back with the same complaint. They weren't going to waste their time or money trying to fix the problem on any of the jeeps until they knew exactly what the problem was and how to fix it. I was told they couldn't do anything for me. That when the problem is occurring, I should get a video of it happening and bring it to them so they can try to figure out what the problem is. The problem is I'm driving when the problem occurs, so I can't safely record it happening.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-02
  • VIN: ZACNJBBB4LP
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving my 2020 Jeep Renegade it will just shut itself down with no warning. I was on the freeway going 60 mph when the car just shut off causing me to have to pull over on the side of the freeway (which is illegal) and then having to restart the car - this happened 6 times in a matter of 24 hours causing me to have to bring my Jeep to the dealership. I was told that there are more electrical issues that will nee dot be addressed but that the main reason for the shut off weas due to not enough oil in the car even though I just had an oil change and was not due for some time. Why would the car just shut off with no warnings? At least a low oil level light would be better than just shutting down.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-27
  • VIN: ZACNJAAB4LP
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The engine stalled and shut off with no warning lights or anything. The whole car shut off while I was driving. This has done it to me 2 times. First incident I was in the middle of an intersection and it died on me. I had to put the car in neutral and coast to safety. Got it to start back and drive to the dealership and they couldn’t figure out what happened. 2nd time I was merging on a highway from an on ramp and it just shut off with no warning. I had it towed to the dealer. I had oil and I had gas both according to the computer and dash of the vehicle. I was told the dealership that it was probably my fuel level sensor could be bad because the computer registers that I have fuel when I don’t have any. I was told it wasn’t covered under warranty and there was not any recalls at that time. I have read recent articles where many jeeps and dodges around my year model with the same issues and the engine stalling. It’s happening now to me and I am seriously concerned for my safety. This car is 3 years old and shouldn’t be having this issue. I feel like I was sold a lemon and it has caused me to think I will never buy another Chrysler made vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-14
  • VIN: Zacnjbd16lp
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: In April 2022, to my surprise the car first stalled on me while I was driving. The “pressure coolant high” was warning light that appeared on the screen when this happened. To start the car, I had to put it in park and then push the ignition button to get it started again. I continued my drive thinking it was a computer error because my coolant level was normal. Where it should be . A few minutes later, it happened again. And I repeated the same process to get it started. Knowing this was a serious issue , as I was driving with my child in the car, I made an appointment with the manufacturer to have it serviced. Three days later, the dealership “Nothing’s wrong the car. A terminal on the battery was loose and it’s ready for pick up.” A few weeks later, the intermittent stalling began occurring again. However, it’s frequency became increasingly worse. It would stall unexpectedly as I am driving on highways, main roads, side streets; while the start/stop option is on and when it is turned off. All dangerous factors. In addition, to the “pressure coolant high” other warning lights came on: “parking brake alert” , “check engine”, “battery”, “throttle failure”. Then, the engine failed to come on at start-up . I would have to push the ignition button multiple times for the car to start. I took the car back to the dealership on June 29th, 2022 for the second time. After, I having the vehicle for 3 days they informed me that my car needed “a new battery and an oil change.” I had to plead with them to run more diagnostics on the renegade because this is more than a replacement battery issue. My safety, my family’s safety, and the safety of other drivers are at risk because I never know when this car will stall on me as I am driving. Unexpectedly, I can get hit from behind by a driver on the highway who is not expecting me to stop out of nowhere. In researching, I’ve found that has been a known issue since 2015.

Just wanted to let you know that if the check engine light comes on, you won't have 4WD.

I had high hopes for this vehicle, especially after seeing the advertisements claiming it could handle any weather and terrain. Unfortunately, when the temperature dropped in Michigan, the car wouldn't start and both the foot brake and emergency brake were blocked. This has left me without transportation to pick up my two children from daycare or get to my night shift as a nurse. I am extremely disappointed and will not be purchasing from this company again. I will also be warning my friends and family to avoid this car. If you live in an area with any amount of snow, I would not recommend this car.

I've been reaching out to the dealership for assistance, but I keep getting the runaround. Additionally, I purchased the top-tier insurance warranty, but now I'm hearing a ticking sound.

My girlfriend just bought a 2020 Jeep Altitude after her Rogue was totaled when a 15-year-old in a 4x4 ran a stop sign. She didn't ask me for any help, which was a mistake, but she shopped around a little and got it for the asking price. In my opinion, there are far better values for the money and the vehicle class. The ride is harsh, and the acceleration is awful. There are very few amenities compared to the Rogue, and I'm not a fan of Nissan either, but she likes it and she's paying for it. There's a difference between 'cheap' and 'inexpensive', and this Jeep is inexpensive. The Rogue was better built, rode better, had more features, and was more efficient. However, she's happy with her purchase, and that's what matters. I hope she enjoys her new car!

The push button start ceases to function at approximately 17,000 miles.

  1. Douglas Effertz 2024-11-24

You'll be pleased to know that there's plenty of headroom in the vehicle, even for someone who's 6 foot 1. Additionally, the vehicle packs a lot of power despite its small size.

  2. Logan Moore 2024-11-03

It's amazing how little it takes to fill up!

  3. Colton Schowalter 2024-09-21

Best vehicle I've purchased at an excellent price.

  4. Easter Cartwright 2024-07-19

Great car! I've had it for almost a year now and I absolutely love the features. When I first got it, it only had 49 miles on it, which was a pleasant surprise since I initially thought it was 48,000 miles.

  5. Salvatore Koelpin 2024-04-13

This vehicle handles really well and it's quite zippy. It's truly a great vehicle and an excellent value!
