1999 Pontiac Bonneville problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Bonneville is a model line of full-size or mid-size front-engine rear drive cars manufactured and marketed by Pontiac from 1957 until 2005, with a hiatus for model years 1982-1986.

The Bonneville (marketed as the Parisienne in Canada until 1981), and its platform partner, the Grand Ville, are some of the largest Pontiacs ever built; in station wagon body styles they reached just over 230 inches (5.8 m) long, and at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) and more were also some of the heaviest cars produced at the time.

The Bonneville nameplate was introduced as a limited production performance convertible during the 1957 model year, its name taken from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah — an early site of US auto racing and numerous world's land speed record records, itself named after U.S. Army officer Benjamin Bonneville.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-03-16
  • VIN: 1G2HX52KXXH
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY RECALL FOR 1999 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE RECALL ANNOUNCED: FEBRUARY 24 2004 NHTSA REFERENCE: #04V090000 NUMBER AFFECTED: 910,873 SUMMARY: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3800 V6 (L36) ENGINES AND CERTAIN DELPHI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS, THE REGULATORS HAVE A MUCH HIGHER THAN USUAL RATE OF FUEL LEAKS. CONSEQUENCE: THE BACKFIRE CAN RUPTURE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE RUPTURE OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD CAN DISPLACE A FUEL LINE, PULLING AN INJECTOR OUT OF PLACE, AND CAUSING A FUEL LEAK AND POSSIBLE FIRE. FIX: DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS WITH IMPROVED DIAPHRAGMS. THE RECALL WILL BE CONDUCTED IN PHASED MAILINGS. PHASE 1 BEGAN ON JUNE 30, 2004, AND PHASE 2 BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 30, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537, OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668. I DROVE ABOUT 7 MILES TO AND FROM WORK THREE TIMES, A TOTAL OF 21 MILES, STOPPED AT A LIBRARY, CAME OUT, SMELLED GAS, WAS DRIVING THE CAR HOME - ONE MILE - WAS GOING TO PARK IT AND GET SOMEONE TO LOOK AT IT. I STOPPED AT THE MAILBOXES AND HEARD A SLIGHT POOF SOUND UNDER THE HOOD.WHEN I LOOKED UP I SAW SMOKE BELLOWING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I GRABBED MY PURSE AND JUMPED OUT. FROM A DISTANCE I SAW 2" BALLS OF FIRE DROPPING FROM THE ENGINE TO THE STREET, CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND WATCHED MY CAR GO UP IN FLAMES WHILE WAITING FOR THEM TO SHOW UP - ALL BECAUSE OF ONE SMALL PLASTIC PIECE UNDER THE HOOD. ALSO, I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO CARRY FULL INSURANCE COVERAGE - A LESSON HARD-LEARNED. *TR

STEERING,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-07-25
  • VIN: 1G2NE52T6XM
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THE 1999 PONTIAC GRAND AM - POSSIBLY THE WORST CAR EVER MADE. AT 30,000 MILES, THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED. AT 40,000 MILES, THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS REPLACED. RECALLS REPLACED THE STEERING WHEEL & CENTER CONSOLE, AND OTHER RECALLS HAVE BEEN MADE. AT 50,000 MILES THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED AGAIN. SHORTLY AFTER THE WARRANTY RAN, MAJOR ENGINE PROBLEMS CAUSED A $2,500 COMPLETE ENGINE REPLACEMENT. UNDER 90,000 MILES, THE GAS GAUGE STOPPED WORKING AND THE BRAKE LIGHTS NEEDED REWIRING. NOW, UNDER 92,000 MILES A NEW PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL: THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS COME ON INTERMITTENTLY, THE TRUNK POPS OPEN ON ITS OWN, THE AIRBAG COMES ON AND OFF, THE CAR ONLY STARTS RANDOMLY, AND WORST OF ALL IT SHUTS OFF ALL ON ITS OWN WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET, SO YET AGAIN WE ARE FORCED TO HAVE DIAGNOSTICS RUN TO FIGURE OUT WHAT NEW AND COSTLY REPAIRS WILL NEED TO BE MADE. PONTIAC/GM SHOULD ADMIT THEY MADE A MISTAKE WITH THE GRAND AM/OLDSMOBILE ALERO AND PAY ALL THE CURRENT OWNERS SOME $$ AND TAKE ALL THE CARS TO A JUNK YARD. THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA COMPLETELY RECALLED THESE CARS FOR THE CITIZENS OF CANADA, YET IN THE U.S. IT'S THE UNFORTUNATE OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES WHO ARE GETTING TAKEN. DO WHAT I AM DOING AND CONTACT YOUR LOCAL BBB, STATE AG, OR ANY OTHER POLITICAL OFFICE (IN ADDITION TO PONTIAC/GM) AND LET THEM KNOW WHAT PIECES OF CRAP THE 99 GRAND AM/ALERO ARE. I HAVE TALKED TO MANY REPAIR SHOPS AND OTHER OWNERS OF THE CAR, AND BY FAR EVERYONE SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT TYPES OF MAJOR PROBLEMS THIS CAR HAS BEEN. WHAT OTHER CAR MANUFACTURER WOULD ALLOW SO MANY PROBLEMS TO EXIST (SUCH AS CAR COMPLETELY SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING) AND HAVE THE GALL TO SAY NOTHING IS WRONG WITH IT? *TR

A RETAINING CLIP, WHICH SECURES THE MANUAL VALVE TO THE LINKAGE OF THE TRANSMISSION DETENT LEVER, CAN BECOME LOOSE UNDER A COMBINATION OF POSSIBLE DRIVER SHIFTING MANEUVERS AND ALLOW THE LINK TO BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE MANUAL VALVE.
  • Consequence: IF THE LINK DISCONNECTS, THE DRIVER'S INDICATED PRNDL STATE MAY DIFFER FROM THE HYDRAULIC STATE OF THE TRANSMISSION. IF THE DRIVER SELECTS 'DRIVE' AND THE TRANSMISSION IS ACTUALLY IN 'REVERSE', A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE MANUAL VALVE/LINK ASSEMBLY WITH A REPLACEMENT MANUAL VALVE/LINK KIT, FEATURING A SPRING-TYPE FASTENER.

  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH CHROME PLATED ALUMINUM WHEELS. SOME OF THESE WHEELS HAVE A MOUNTING SURFACE THAT WAS NOT MACHINED CORRECTLY, CAUSING THE WHEEL STUDS TO BREAK.
  • Consequence: THE TIRE/WHEEL ASSEMBLY COULD SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WHEELS AND REPLACE ALL WHEELS WITH DATE CODES INDICATING THAT THEY MAY NOT HAVE BEEN MACHINED CORRECTLY. THE WHEEL MOUNTING STUDS AT ANY LOCATION WHERE A SUSPECT WHEEL WAS INSTALLED WILL ALSO BE REPLACED.

The 1999 Bonneville, once a Consumer Digest 'Best Buy', unfortunately no longer holds that title. Despite its previous accolades, my personal experience with the vehicle has been less than satisfactory. At only 38K miles, the power steering failed and upon bringing it to the dealer, I discovered a TSB on the issue. The cost to correct the problem was quoted at $2300, which I found to be quite steep. I ultimately decided to forego the repairs and opted for a gym membership instead to build arm strength. Unfortunately, at 61K miles, the coolant system also failed and I was forced to pay $1800 for repairs. To make matters worse, the engine completely gave out just two months later, with an estimated repair cost of $8000. In total, the necessary repairs amounted to $10,300 on a car that would only be valued at $9500 if in perfect condition.

Bonneville is a great car! It's spacious, comfortable, and safe. I really like everything about it, except for the fuel mileage and GM heritage.

This car experienced a multitude of issues, including intermittent windshield wiper failure, turn signal malfunction, molding defects, trunk deck lid issues, horn malfunction, belt tensioner problems, compass malfunction, air conditioning issues, automatic light dimmer malfunction, head-up display malfunction, sunroof failure, peeling paint, interior trim falling off, and difficulty starting the engine. Despite GM's initial refusal to acknowledge the issues, we were able to successfully navigate the lemon law process and ultimately prevail.

This car has been very reliable. Although there have been some minor problems related to cheap plastic parts used on the interior, overall it has given me good service. I believe it will continue to do so in the future. However, I have noticed that the windows let water flow in when driving in the rain and the trunk lets water drain in when opened wet.

I travel frequently by car and have used this vehicle extensively! It has never required any repairs beyond regular maintenance. The ride quality is excellent, and I average 28-29 mpg. It has good acceleration when needed and handles very well. There is plenty of space to transport children and a spacious trunk. Whenever someone sees what I drive, they often comment, 'I used to have a Bonneville, I never should have sold it...' I don't think I can part with mine either.

My car carries a load comfortably and is highly reliable. Although I have had to reset the transmission computer every other year due to sudden rough gear shifts, I still love the comfort and ride it provides.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I absolutely love my car! I bought it back in 2000 with only 22,000 miles on it for a great price of 15k. It has been such a reliable car for me and my family. The car is very spacious and has great acceleration. I have had a few minor issues with the ABS light coming on and off since about 35,000 miles, but I have taken it to the dealer a few times and they were able to reset it. I have also had the brakes checked regularly and have had no problems. Overall, I think this car is one of the best I have ever had and it's perfect for both work and family. I plan on keeping it for a long time. I believe that American cars have had a bad reputation in the past, but cars like this Bonneville are really closing the gap in terms of reliability and affordability for the average person.

Congratulations on your purchase of a used 2003 Bonneville! It sounds like you made a great choice. It's wonderful to hear that you had such a positive experience with your 1999 Bonneville SE that you had to have another one. It's impressive that you haven't had to do any repairs in 4 years and that the car drives straight and true with great acceleration and gas mileage. Even your teenage daughters enjoy driving it on the highway! And to top it off, you got a real value for your money by purchasing it used. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

This is our second Bonneville and we are happy to say that the '99 model was a big improvement over the '91. We kept the '91 for 8 years and spent very little on repairs, thanks to our regular maintenance. Although the ride is a bit stiff, it has excellent handling and control in evasive maneuvering, and provides good road feel. It takes curves and corners extremely well, making it a pleasure to drive. The seats are also very comfortable, and with the optional 60/40 split bench seat, we were able to take two other couples out to dinner in the same car, which was a great experience. We were able to average about 25mpg on the highway (65mph) with the overdrive (auto) transmission. Not shifting into OD would lower gas mileage considerably, and we averaged around 20mpg around town.
