2019 Toyota Highlander problems
The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger (Japanese: トヨタ・クルーガー, Hepburn: Toyota Kurūgā), is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by Toyota since 2000.
Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUV or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota's best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006.
The first-generation model was sold in Japan as the Kluger, which was exclusive to dealership network called Toyota Netz as a larger alternative to the RAV4. The Kluger nameplate is also used in Australia because "Highlander" is a trademarked trim line name owned by Hyundai. The name is derived from the German word klug, which means smart or clever (Klüger – with diacritics – means "someone who is smarter than another" in German).

Common 2019 Toyota Highlander problems
The 2019 Toyota Highlander is known for its standard high-tech safety features, but there are some common problems that owners have reported. These issues include Bluetooth connectivity problems, worn-out fuel pumps, and chipping paint on the front bumper.
Bluetooth connectivity issues are the most widespread complaint from 2019 Toyota Highlander owners. The software can freeze and cause phones to disconnect from the stereo system. There are software updates available that improve the connection stability, and dealers will usually update the software for free. However, some dealers may charge up to $100 for the update.
Another common problem reported by 2019 Toyota Highlander owners is worn-out fuel pumps. These issues typically occur around 7,500 miles. Toyota has issued a large recall for the entire fuel pump assembly on a lot of Toyota and Lexus models, including the 2019 Highlander. Toyota will replace the entire assembly for free for all affected models.
Chipping paint on the front bumper is another issue reported by 2019 Toyota Highlander owners. This problem typically occurs around 25,000 miles. Paint that is improperly cared for is more likely to chip easily as it ages. The only way to fix the problem is by repainting the front bumper, which costs around $1,000.
There are three recalls on the 2019 Toyota Highlander, which is fewer than many other SUVs from the same year. The two most serious recalls both cover the fuel pump assembly, which Toyota will replace for free. The third recall is for a load capacity label, which is less of an issue, although Toyota will also replace the label for free as well.
In summary, the 2019 Toyota Highlander has some common problems, including Bluetooth connectivity issues, worn-out fuel pumps, and chipping paint on the front bumper. However, these problems are minor compared to other midsize SUVs from the same year, leading to lower repair bills as they age.

- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: Approximately at 56,000 miles I began having trouble with a whining noise along with rough, delayed, or sudden shifting, lack of acceleration from a stop and shuddering. I had taken it in for an oil change and explained some of my complaints. They stated they didn't hear any whining noises (so they say) after completing the oil/fluid change. The service department said if it continues to come back and they stated that they haven't had any complaints about the whining noise with Toyota. I got "service engine light" and took it to the dealer which they said was a sensor for AWD. I paid to have it replaced and 2 days later the exact code came back up. Took it back into the Toyota dealership stating the same code came on but, to date, the dealer has been unable to correct the problem because they say it's the transmission that needs replacing which will cost over 8,500.00! My truck only has 119k miles and should be good to go for at minimum of 100k miles more with no major issues!

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-07
- VIN: 5TDJZRFH6KS
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Transmission Failed at 65,000. Yes, inspection available upon request. Safety is when my family with little children are in the car, and erratic shifting takes place while traveling at high rates of speed. Car has not broken down, but was told by dealer that it could "run for ever or break down tomorrow" Issue for me is that it is VERY apparent through multiple resources that Toyota clearly is aware of this issue. Recalled in 2017, and 2018.....but looks like most is happening with the 2019 with no accountability on their part. Power train warranty expires at 60,000 miles....yet 75% of reported issues are in between $60,000-$70,000 with Toyota offering ZERO assistance or taking any responsibility or action. No warnings on the dash, no lights. Either loud noise, high rev RPM, or sudden erratic shifting. Just Toyota....saying "yeah we know about it, but still not helping with it, not extending the warranty, and just leaving you with a $8,000-$10,000 bill or continue with a ticking time bomb. Negligence is a safety issue. A big one.

I absolutely love this fantastic SUV! After doing a ton of research, I can save you a lot of time here. It's just the right size if you want a bigger vehicle and it's a bargain, actually, considering it has the legendary Toyota engine quality. It drives very nicely and I prefer this body style to what is coming out in 2020. Everyone I talked to loved theirs. One person said that Toyota has never let them down and I can say the same after buying several different Toyotas over the years! I considered all other models of similar size and the smaller SUVs this time around and didn't make up my mind easily. Two competitors had tempting longer warranties and cheaper prices, but in the long haul, who knows what problems they could have, especially after reading about them. Competitors have nice looking cars, but their engine qualities are inferior. I considered Honda Pilot and CRV, but read about their engine and battery problems, so I crossed off that brand too. Fords/GMC are nice, but clunky and heavy. After much research, I ended up back at Toyota! The Highlander seemed better balanced and smoother than the 4Runner. The Highlander may lack a bit in styling, but I went for reliability, and I still think the car is beautiful! Get yours before this body style sells out, unless you like the 2020 look. I bought new since they are just a bit more money than the expensive used ones I found. With their reputation, I'm surprised the Highlanders aren't a bit higher priced - but I'm glad they aren't! Also, I don't care about this feature as much - but some people think the infotainment/info screen isn't great, it seems ok for my basic needs. I do like that it doesn't stick up above the dashboard.

Great SUV! It's very reliable and has a comfortable ride. The use of space is good, although I wish the touchscreen wasn't such a long reach. However, the navigation works well!
-
Mark Miller Toyota gave you a great deal and we're thrilled to hear that you're happy with it! While you usually go for American or German brands, it's great to hear that you're enjoying the direct shift transmission and the smooth revving v6 engine of this car. It sounds like it's powerful and tight, which is fantastic. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I really enjoy the ride and build quality of this vehicle. However, I was a bit disappointed to find out that it doesn't have a remote start, especially considering its price range. Additionally, it would have been great if it had Apple Play, which is available in the 2019 RAV4, a cheaper vehicle. The owners manual is quite lengthy and could be more concise. It would also be convenient if the tailgate could be lifted by placing your foot underneath, like the Ford Escape. Although the pickup is a bit sluggish, it's still a nice vehicle. I believe that some common sense features that are offered by competitors for less money could have been included in this model.

I am extremely satisfied with my Highlander, which I have owned for six months. It is an absolute pleasure to drive, with excellent acceleration and handling. The interior is incredibly spacious and comfortable. While the engine stop-start feature can be a little rough, it is the only negative aspect of an otherwise flawless vehicle.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2019 Highlander Platinum that I bought in July 2019. Unfortunately, I've been having some trouble with the Nav system voice prompt not working properly. I took my car to the dealer and they were not aware of the issue, but they did inform me that it's a known software problem with no current software fix available. They did provide me with a workaround, which involves hitting the ignition button twice before starting the car. However, I find this to be impractical and not very convenient. I've taken my car back to the dealer three times since then (it's now December 2019), but unfortunately, there are still no known software updates for this issue. I'm planning to submit a safety complaint to NHTSA, as I believe this is an extremely dangerous defect. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

I have been residing in my house for two years now, however, the navigation system seems to be unable to locate my address. Despite my efforts to seek assistance from the dealer, I have not been provided with any information regarding the next update. The system's functionality is limited and does not perform as advertised, and the Entune feature is not up to par.

Toyota's navigation and voice recognition systems have been a source of frustration for many customers, including myself. In some cases, the navigation system has led us on detours that added 45 minutes to our trip, which is unacceptable. Additionally, the third-row seats do not fold down flat, causing small items to constantly fall over in the cargo area. As a salesperson, this is a real nuisance for me as my samples are always scattered. Despite being told that this year's transmission was computerized and would solve previous issues with lagging acceleration after shifting, I have found this not to be the case. The voice recognition system is still amateurish and annoying. However, I remain confident in Toyota's ability to address these issues and improve their systems in the future.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some feedback about my experience with my Toyota. I noticed that the 2019 model is still being advertised in February 2020, which surprised me a bit. I did have some trouble with the tires that came with the car in snowy conditions, but I was able to purchase a new set of Michelin tires that work great. My main concern has been with the electronics - the navigation system isn't very reliable and I have trouble connecting my iPhone's Google Maps app and phone function to the car's speakers. However, I've found a workaround by using my Garmin for longer trips. Additionally, I've noticed that my mpg performance falls short of the posted EPA data by 20% after 13k miles. When I brought this up to my service manager, he mentioned that there may be a software update in the future. Overall, I still enjoy my Toyota and appreciate the service I've received. Thank you for listening!

My radio stopped working after just three months, and even after replacing it with a new one, it still does not function properly. It is important to note that this model does not come with automatic start, which was not mentioned by the salesperson. Without the autostart feature, it is not possible to use the eTune system or Apple Play.
