The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.

The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.

Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

Common 2016 Toyota Corolla problems

The 2016 Toyota Corolla is known for its high-level reliability, but like any vehicle, it has some common problems reported by real owners. Here are the three most common issues and their details:

  • Automatic Transmission May Not Shift Correctly at High Mileages: The second-most frequent Toyota Corolla issue reported by owners is the automatic transmission not correctly shifting, particularly in models with high mileage (over 125,000 miles).
  • Vehicle Won't Crank Due to Starter: The other common problem for the Toyota Corolla is the engine not cranking as a result of a broken starter. The starter of the compact car tends to fail after around 100,000-125,000 miles.

It is important to note that most Corolla models are not affected by these three problems. However, they were the most frequent ones reported by real owners.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-15
  • VIN: 2T1BURHE8GC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: We own a 2016 Toyota Corolla Sport model. 4 door sedan. We first started to notice a loud sound that was seemingly coming from the front of the car. It was a whining, rattling sound. The car's mileage is 87k. We took it into the shop, we were first told that it sounded like a bearing going out in the wheel. Then we took it to a licensed Toyota dealership. The dealership then tells us that it is actually due to the transmission chain, and our transmission will need to be replaced for $8900!! So I begin to dig online, and find that our model is the same years of other Toyota models that Toyota has a KNOWN problem with. This is a major issue, and puts our safety at risk if the transmission just suddenly goes out. The Toyota dealership has confirmed that we have an issue, and are saying that the transmission MUST be replaced, effectively decommissioning our work commuter vehicle until we can get this sorted. It was diagnosed by a licensed Toyota technician, but it can be inspected by a insurance rep/mechanic upon request. There were no warnings, no lamps, no codes. We just heard the noise, which is seemingly getting worse and louder. Which appeared about 7/15/24. The car has had it's routine maintenance done per the manufacturers specifications. The fluids are routinely checked, and it is taken in to a Toyota dealership for it's servicing, with certified maintenance records. It was never noted on oil changes that this was an issue, or that the transmission fluid was ever an issue. We do not drive this car hard, we do not abuse it. It is our commuter. And now we are looking at having to replace the transmission for essentially the same cost as the car itself.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
  • VIN: 5YFBURHE3GP
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I own a 2016 Toyota Corolla with 35000 miles. My extended warranty expired in January 2024. In the the last few months my Toyota developed a “rattle” or noise, primarily on the right side at slow speeds and slow turns. I took the car to a well respected and nearby repair facility for an oil change and had them look at the noise. They found that the control arm bushings had stress cracks and the sway bar end links and mount bushings were leaking. I had the repairs done. The defective parts are documented with photos in the electronic version of the repair invoice. The noise came back in a day. The next step would be replacing the struts. The repair shop found no visible wear or damage to the struts. I already spent $2400 on repairs. The noise remains. The damage to the parts most likely started long before the warranty expired in January. I found a Technical Service Bulletin describing the repair for this noise issue. The repair described specifies replacing the control arms. I did that in the above described repair. There are many upset consumers complaining in Internet forums about the same problem in 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla’s. I contacted Toyota customer service by email. They told me there was nothing they could do about the problem since the warranty expired 5 years after purchasing the car. I told them I have an 8 year extended warranty. They insisted that there was no 8 year warranty. I offered to send them proof. I have the same problem as shown below. I replaced the control arms and stabilizer bar links. They appeared to be failing. There are many more pages on the internet with the same problem. I reported this to Toyota. UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-27
  • VIN: 2T1BURHE3GC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Toyota has installed several parts on my 2016 corolla that were previous years' parts. In previous complaints, the tires (under 11,000 miles) started to dry rot. When filing the warranty repair, the dealerships and Toyota tried to claim that it was normal. After deep investigation, it was found that the tires were actually over a YEAR older than the release of the vehicle. The tire warranty started when they were sold to Toyota, not when the car was purchased. They did the same thing on Air intake components for the Air filter system for the car. This is the 3rd issue. Since I purchased the lease in 2016. The car constantly had a check engine light. Typically, it was suggested it was a "gas cap pressure check failure". But at all of the routine inspections and services. Dealerships never did anything but clear the code and keep going. I recently went back in to do a "smoke check" as I was getting tired of the code constantly pulling the check engine light. Now, supposedly, it's the Charcol canister. Ironically enough, Toyota had a recall on those items in 2015. I'm suspecting that this part if from that recall part, as it's been an issue (within service notes) to be checked since 2016 and was never suggested or further deep dive into the issue was never done. Now that the warranty is over, I'm supposed to pay another $800+ for the service parts and labor. Which Toyota should be liable for, as I KEPT taking the care to the dealership for warranty service, yet these checks were never done. When the service is underway, I would suggest sending this part to the NHTSA to investigate the old recalled parts are in fact being installed on newer vehicles. As this would be the 3rd item that was from other older models that mysteriously appeared on my 2016 model corolla.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-17
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 5YFBURHE2GP
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: We discovered that there was an explosion of some sort inside the car on the passenger side, which seems to have potentially involve the air bag system and/or electrical around the system, but this is not entirely known. The car was parked at the time and had not been driven for approximately 65 hours. It appears there was a fire but we did not witness. The dash is melted leaving a gaping hole, what appears to be portions of the air bag are partially disintegrated and stuck to the ceiling, the ceiling is charred, the sun visor is melted and distorted, and hanging down, underneath the dash is also melted, and the smell in the car is absolutely stifling. The windshield is shattered in one spot, with additional cracks stemming from that point of contact. The windshield is damaged from the impact from inside the car and is pushing out. The car was locked, there is no evidence of forced entry or attempted forced entry. It has never been in a collision. The car was parked three feet away from our motorhome in the confines of our RV spot at an asphalt campground. The safety of all in the area was at risk, and furthermore, since this explosion was unprovoked, if we had been in the car at the time, it's unimaginable as to what sort of bodily damage the passengers, especially the passenger seat occupant, would have incurred. I do not believe the problem can be reproduced, but the car has yet to be inspected. I am currently awaiting insurance to take the car via tow truck to inspect it. There were no warnings, messages, or other symptoms.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-01
  • VIN: 5yfburhe4gp
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Car began with issues switching gears. It would hesitate to go into gear and once it was finally in gear it began to buck. Currently stationed overseas And brought my car to Toyota multiple times and was told they wouldn’t look at it since it’s an American spec Toyota and not a European. After a week of trying to get it fixed with no luck the vehicle began getting worse and wasn’t able to go above 35 miles an hour. Finally the check engine light came on. Brought it into a local mechanic and a P 2820 J code was the issue. After researching online I found that Toyota had a service campaign for the same issues I was having. The problem is with the ECU and the cars solenoid. Currently trying to get it repaired but Toyota will not help since I’m stationed overseas in europe and it’s an American Toyota. Toyota USA has been little to no help with the issue so I have had to stop driving the vehicle since it’s a safety hazard to my family.

Negative 2016 Toyota Corolla car reviews

  1. Marcus Conroy 2024-11-28

I purchased a 2016 Corolla five months ago and unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with the A/C system. There seems to be a mold smell coming out of the vents, which is quite unpleasant. Despite taking it to my local dealer three times in less than a month, they have been unable to resolve the issue and have suggested that I just deal with it. According to the shop manager at Toyota, this is a known issue with Corollas. Additionally, there are specific instructions on how to shut off the A/C system, which I followed, but unfortunately, it did not resolve my issue. With summer approaching, I am concerned that the problem may worsen. I am disappointed with my experience and may reconsider purchasing a Toyota in the future, especially a Corolla.

  2. Ken Marks 2024-10-23

This car is amazing in the summertime and handles well in the rain. However, it struggles with acceleration in first gear, but once you get past that, the car really comes alive. Unfortunately, it doesn't perform well in the winter and tends to slide around on slick roads, especially with even a small amount of snow. The car's low ground clearance doesn't help either. On the bright side, the sports button doesn't seem to make much of a difference in acceleration, but it does hold high RPMs in the auto part of the transmission. The interior is very user-friendly, and the radio sounds great. The trunk space is also amazing, and the car's bright lights are a plus, although they tend to get mistaken for brights. Overall, it's a good car with good fuel mileage, but not suitable for winter driving. I would suggest buying something different for that season.

  3. Keshawn Runolfsdottir 2024-10-13

I had a negative experience with my 2016 Toyota Corolla and adjacent model years with the CVT transmission. I noticed that the car would shift hard into passing gear and downshift at normal highway speeds. Despite taking it to the dealer three times, the issue was not resolved. However, I discovered through research that Toyota is aware of the issue and is working to address it. While I am disappointed with my experience, I believe that Toyota is committed to customer satisfaction and will continue to improve their products. I hope that future Toyota owners have a better experience than I did.

  4. Ian Klocko 2024-09-09

I've been driving the 2016 Corolla S for over a month now and I have some thoughts to share. First of all, the overall design of the car is very well done, both on the exterior and interior. It reminds me of several higher-end vehicles from the last decade. I particularly enjoy the HID lights and nice wheels, which give the car a nice presence. However, I have experienced some minor issues with the car that have been a bit of a letdown. As a Toyota owner, I expected better than petty little issues like squeaks and rattles. Unfortunately, this car has a rattle in the driver's door, one by the A/C vent near the driver's window, the steering column itself, one in the passenger seat, one in the plastic trim over the passenger-side airbag, and last but not least, the light/Bluetooth microphone fixture on the roof rattles as well. It's been driving me crazy, especially since the car only has 1200 miles on it! Additionally, the car is somewhat noisier than I anticipated, but I suppose I should have taken a longer test drive. The MPG's are also marginal at best, which is surprising given that the EPA rating is 25~30% better on the Corolla. The steering on this vehicle is light, which can make highway maneuvers feel lacking in feel and control. Lane changes can be an ordeal, as the car just floats around and one cannot control its direction due to lack of feedback. Lastly, I find the car to be uncomfortable, which is disappointing since it didn't seem so during the test drive. Overall, I have mixed feelings about the car, but I hope this feedback helps others make an informed decision. The telescopic steering wheel doesn't extend far enough, causing me to sit closer to the wheel. This, in turn, bends my knees so that they don't rest against the cushion. Additionally, the left footrest is too close to the brake pedal, making it difficult to rest my foot on it without contorting my legs. The proximity of the protruding footrest and brake pedal is so close that if I were to move my foot, it would touch the brake pedal, which is not ideal when depressing the brake pedal. While I take responsibility for not scrutinizing this during the test drive, it is still an ergonomic downfall. Despite being a warrantied car, the Corolla has been a disappointment to drive. I urge others to scrutinize their Toyota purchase, as my experience suggests that the current Toyota product is a hollowed-out facade built upon past glory.

This car is very easy to drive. The brakes are decent and the acceleration is adequate, although the engine does buzz to get there. I'm not a huge fan of the CVT, but it seems like it needs that to get the most out of the engine. The visibility is very good, and even though it was the low-end model, the stereo was fine. My biggest gripes are that at highway speed, the engine could use another gear, and the car tends to drift a bit on the highway with very little steering feedback. However, the cruise control is typical Toyota, and the LED headlights have a great beam pattern, but they are way too hot. Overall, I think this car would be much improved with a small engine and turbo. I drove this car, as well as the Ford Focus and VW Jetta 1.4, all in the same month, and each for almost a week. Granted, I'm not focused on long-term ownership costs, but the Jetta was hands down my favorite.

I am the type of car buyer who doesn't fall for gimmicks such as cash back, trade-in values, or being sold something I don't want like extended warranties or floor mats. I regularly walk out of dealerships when the price isn't right, with no exceptions. Car salesmen are trained to sell you things, and if they can get you to test drive a car, they say you've all but bought it. However, that's not the case with me. When I knew what I wanted in a car, I tried Edmunds. They sent out inquiries to all the dealerships in my area of exactly what I was looking for. Two dealerships came back. One dealership was lying, so I won't mention their name. The other dealership was 40 miles away, had 3 colors to choose from, and the Edmunds price guarantee beat the best price I could negotiate myself after working at it for months. I couldn't believe it! The car dealer honored the Edmunds price, and I picked my favorite color. I am one happy car buying customer. Edmunds beat everybody, including credit unions and big box stores. And I got it below what the average buyer paid for this exact car. Thanks, Edmunds!

I think the Corolla is a fantastic choice for the money. It comes with all the necessary equipment to make your driving experience enjoyable. I highly recommend it, especially from Fremont Toyota.

Thanks for taking the time to read my review of the sport model. Overall, I've had a great experience with this car. While it's not the most powerful vehicle out there, it's reliable, long-lasting, and gets great gas mileage. As a young driver, I've pushed the car to its limits and it's held up well. Of course, I don't recommend driving recklessly, as this car is meant for safe and efficient transportation. The brakes are decent, but they did take some getting used to. One thing to note is that there is a bit of a throttle delay, which can be frustrating. However, I've found that the car performs well enough for my needs. If you're considering buying this car, I recommend taking it for a test drive to see if it's right for you. One downside is that the handling in snowy or rainy conditions isn't great, so be sure to drive carefully. The interior is decent, although some parts feel a bit cheap. However, I do like the material used for the seats and overall design of the sport model. If you're a taller person, you may find the seat and legroom to be a bit cramped. Overall, I recommend the sport model, as the 17-inch wheels and sleek rims really make the car stand out. Thanks again for reading!

So far, so good! I chose this model because I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a basic car to get me back and forth to work, but I wanted something with a reliable history. I do wish the fuel tank was a little larger. Que Sera, Sera.

It has excellent long-term reliability and is a comfortable car for its size. Where it falls short is with dated technology, and it's a bit underpowered.
