2017 Toyota Corolla problems

The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.
The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.
Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

- VIN: 5YFBURHE6HP
- Components: AIR BAGS

- Summary: I was t-boned by a driver on 5/16/2023. Since this occurred, my vehicle has been repaired. However I have a shake and hoovering noise coming from the front of the vehicle. It has been aligned, tires have been rotated, and suspension has been checked. My mechanic can find no fault. However he has stated that he can feel the shake and can hear the noise. He also says it pulls to the left really hard when accelerating. These issues were not present before my accident. Also my seatbelts on my driver and passenger side were replaced shortly after my accident. I felt like this wasn't checked by the body shop.

- Summary: To whom it may concern, I would like to report that my vehicle's paint has been peeling off since June 2018. The vehicle was purchased on 8/11/17, and I have continuously reported the paint problem to no avail from the dealership or manufacturer. As a matter of fact, in February 2019, the vehicle was serviced to due bubbles developing around the windshield, and I again reported the paint issues and received no resolution to my problem. Hence, I would like to know whether my case is an isolated one or just like the white paint settlement, Toyota has deceived some of its customers that chose blue paint in this model (Corolla).

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

- Summary: My college son was driving down from Orlando, and when he got here I took his/my car to my mechanic because the AC was not cold. I felt a hard shift when I put it in reverse, and when I started to drive the car to the mechanic, it didn’t feel right. They fixed my AC and I asked him to check the car as I was worried it did not feel safe to drive. They changed all the filters and did a complete transmission flush even though it was not due for 60,000 miles and there is less than 54,000 miles on this vehicle. They changed all the filters and upon doing the transmission flush my mechanic of 15 years found chunks of metal and shavings in the transmission pan. He took pics & told me my transmission was bad but it was an internal defect and I needed to take it to Toyota as there was no damage on the outside of my transmission, it’s pan, gasket or filter and there were no signs of any leak. He told me these CVT transmissions were a problem and there were a lot of ones not recalled, but there was a Special Service Campaign JSD for 1.3 million of these transmissions from Toyota. Toyota said my Vin number was not part of this Special Service Campaign JSD but I found there were also 3400 recalls on the CVT transmissions from the Toyota hatchback. Toyota told me because my car was already out of warranty, even if it was a manufacturing defect, they were not responsible. I take very good care of my cars. I have two Toyota Corollas, both 2017 and now I am very concerned about the other one. I’ve been on a lot of Toyota forums and it seems there are so many other Toyota Corollas that don’t have many miles on them and all of a sudden their transmission has an internal defect. I brought it to the dealership and they simply said it needed to be replaced, that it was hard shifting when going into reverse and banging gears intermediately. They told me if I wanted to know what the defect was I would have to pay at least 15 hrs of labor to start. My son could have been killed driving it

- Summary: Twice within one month my Corolla experienced Sudden Unintended Acceleration. The first time I had just entered the parking lot of my local Star Market. I stopped for a man in the crosswalk and was just about to ease off the break when I saw a woman approaching the crosswalk so I stayed on my break. Suddenty the car revved up and went forward. I think it was so loud the woman heard it and stopped. My car returned to normal operation within maybe five seconds and as I drove by the woman, I yelled there was something wrong. Went home and scheduled an appointment with Toyota. It took a few days for them to check my car. I think this type of issue brings in the next level up of repair. I was told they went over everything and could find nothing wrong. My car was safe to drive. I drove it for exactly one month and it did the same thing. This time I was inching my way into a parking space that was up against a wall. Nowhere near the gas. I was maybe a couple of feet from the wall when the car accelerated again. The engine really revved up again and I went into the wall. The car was drivable, and I got it right back to Toyota. It is still sitting there pending investigation. I am waiting to hear from someone from their liability department. I'm not sure what will happen, but I know I will not drive that car again. My biggest concern is that Toyota will claim I'm elderly and hit the gas, not the brake. That is not what happened.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-13
- VIN: 2T1BURHE8HC
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: Recently purchased a used 2017 Toyota Corolla. During the test drive I did not attempt to use the cruise control as it was only driven on city or small highways. Travel with the car at those locations has been good. Yesterday while on a freeway, I used the cruise control. It started out okay, but when I got to a downhill or uphill location, the car engine got very loud. The rpm’s revved to an extremely high level and the car accelerated and kept accelerating beyond the cruise set speed. I became very scared and didn’t know what was happening. Luckily I had quick thinking to hit the brakes immediately. I actually pulled over and stopped due to the issue and my nerves. The engine looked okay so once calmed, I began traveling again. I wanted to use the cruise on the freeway, so attempted a second time later. The same exact thing happened in the uphill / downhill scenario. I realized there is something wrong and it is not a good issue at all! This morning I began researching things related to the car. Prior to my purchase, I had checked for any outstanding recalls (which there were none) and problems people may have had with this car. There were no general concerning things I saw. This morning I began searches specific to cruise control issues and found discussions and even videos pertaining to cruise problems. People mention an array of scenarios and possible reasons such as the brake pedal sensor not working. Then I came across this site where other people described the same exact problem and safety concern of mine. I agree with all of them that it is definitely scary and thank goodness the brake works otherwise it would be a MAJOR safety concern!! I am now concerned and wondering why after many people have problems with this, there is not a fix or something being done?

The front right wheel was completely ripped apart, the fluids from around the engine all spilled out, and the front right door does not open. There is a police report filed and the accident is filed with my insurance (Progressive). The car was inspected by insurance just to determine if it is totaled and the value it's worth. I owned a base model Ford Fiesta that I purchased new in 2012. During my college years, I used it for pizza deliveries. After driving it for over 100,000 miles for five years, I decided to purchase a new car for my hour-long commute to work. I researched cars in the $16-20K range and found that the Corolla was the only one that came with semi-autonomous features as standard, which was a crucial factor for me. Living in a semi-rural area, I find driving to be a necessary evil, but the adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, automatic headlights, and pedestrian detection features have made it much more bearable. The Corolla is designed to be basic transportation, and it does that job well. Although it doesn't handle as well as the Fiesta, it is perfect for everyday driving on highways, country roads, and in traffic. The car feels more robust than the Fiesta and has ample space for four people. If you are the type of driver who enjoys racing to red lights, screeching around parking lots, and generally being a nuisance to others, this car is not for you. However, if you drive cautiously and carefully, this car is perfect for you. It is basic transportation with modern features that have historically held its value and requires low maintenance.

This Toyota Corolla is incredibly reliable. I recently replaced my old, unreliable Chevrolet Aveo with my new Corolla and I couldn't be happier! The difference between the two is night and day. I really appreciate the safety features and the new radar cruise control, which I use every day - it's so convenient! I chose a basic LE model in silver and I find the seats to be very comfortable. The AC is also very powerful, which is great. The stereo is okay - it's disappointing that there's no Android Auto, but the USB and aux jack make up for it. The reverse camera works very well and the rear seat is huge and comfortable. The best feature of my Corolla is the fuel economy - I get an average of 36mpg between city and highway. In my opinion, the CVT works well too. I'm so happy with my decision to switch from GM to Toyota. The only downside is that Toyota needs to improve on the creaking and rattles in the interior - there's so much cheap, terrible rattling plastic inside. Wind noise also needs to be improved. Overall, I give my Corolla a 9 out of 10 due to the noisy, low-quality interior. The best thing, of course, besides reliability, is the outstanding fuel economy.

This is probably going to be our last car, as my husband is 85 years old. We both absolutely love this car! It handles beautifully and I always feel like I'm the first one out from a traffic light. Over the past 55 years, we've had quite a few cars, including a Cadillac and three Mercedes, but this car beats them all. The only issue we have is getting in and out of the car, as my husband is 5'11'' and I am 5'4''. But hey, it's a sports car, what do you expect? The car only comes in white, blue, and black cherry pearl, and we got the black cherry. You can never miss it in a parking lot, and since Toyota only made 8,100 of them, you probably won't see it very often. We actually bought the car through Costco, and we couldn't be happier with our purchase. I'm now 79 years old and still loving the car, and my husband is 86 and enjoying driving it just as much. So far, we haven't seen another one on the road!

It sounds like you're looking for a car that has a great balance between safety, reliability, and performance. This car seems to fit the bill perfectly! The safety features are impressive and the reliability is expected to be top-notch. While a few more horsepower would be nice, it's hard to argue with that balance. On your first road trip, you got over 29 miles per gallon, which is pretty good!

Great car!

I recently drove a new 2018 LE Corolla for 750 miles and found it to be a decent car for running errands. However, I did notice that the car struggled with acceleration and highway driving in hilly or mountainous areas. The engine also produced a lot of noise when accelerating, which could be a bit bothersome. Additionally, the car was slow to get going from a stop, but once the engine spooled up, it was able to pick up speed. I also noticed that when driving at 60 mph with cruise control on, the car would speed up to about 65 mph downhill, but then the CVT would downshift and the engine would rev up to 4,500 rpm to slow the car down, which was quite noisy. Unfortunately, the transmission only has three positions (D, S, and B), and there is no way to have any other control over it. I believe that a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission would have made this car a much better option for those looking for an economy car. Lastly, I found the rear window visibility to be troubling due to the fixed headrests on both sides of the vehicle and an adjustable one in the center, which restricted visibility when making quick lane changes. Overall, the car has some design flaws, but it is still a decent option for running errands.

Recently, we were in the market for a new car and decided to give a Toyota a try. Unfortunately, just 14 days after purchasing a 2017 Corolla LE, while driving down a 45 mph street with my pregnant wife in the front seat and my 4-year-old in the backseat, the car suddenly died. Although the electronics stayed on, pushing the gas pedal did nothing. I quickly put on my flashers, coasted to a stop, put the car in park, and thankfully, the car restarted. We were lucky to have avoided any accidents and are grateful to be safe. Our previous car, a 2002 Civic, never had any issues like this over the 15 years we owned it. I plan to contact the dealer on Monday to see what can be done. It's disappointing to have these types of issues with a new car that only has 350 miles on it, but I'm hopeful that the dealer will be able to help us out.

One thing that we found concerning about this car was the poor visibility out the back, which was due to the high rear seat headrests.

I purchased this car due to its affordable price and standard safety features. Although I initially believed I could tolerate its lackluster performance, I have come to dislike it after driving it for the first 1000 miles. While it does have some positive aspects, the negatives outweigh the advantages for me. On the positive side, the standard safety technology is impressive, and the headlights are the best I have ever seen in a car at any price point. Additionally, the gas mileage is pretty good, although it should be given the car's anemic performance. However, there are several downsides. Even when driving in 'Sport' mode, this car is incredibly dull, and passing other vehicles requires careful planning. The backup camera's resolution is also very poor, making it useless in some lighting conditions. Furthermore, several minor issues, such as the lack of sliding sun visors and the absence of XM radio, have started to wear on me. Despite these issues, I will try to keep the car for a couple of years until Toyota's free maintenance plan runs out, so I only need to spend money on gas. However, I am unsure whether I can tolerate this car for that long, which is a depressing thought.

I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share an experience we had with a car we bought for our teen driver. Recently, they were involved in a rear-end crash at a relatively low speed of 15 mph, hitting a Chevy Traverse that was moving at 10 mph. Although the Traverse barely had a scratch, our car ended up being totaled. Thankfully, our teen was not injured and no airbags deployed. However, we were surprised by the amount of damage caused by such a slow-speed crash. This experience has made me concerned about what could have happened at a higher speed. I just wanted to share this with you to raise awareness. While the car is rated well in safety, it has a lot of plastic parts that crumple easily and are too expensive for insurance to repair. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
