2005 Mercury Mountaineer problems
The Mercury Mountaineer is a mid-size luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) that was sold by Mercury from 1996 until 2010. Sharing many of its features with the Ford Explorer, the vehicles were virtually identical in terms of hardware. Externally, they were styled somewhat differently, and the Mountaineer was positioned with a more upscale interior, with the Mountaineer's MSRP coming in at $1,000–$6,000 more than the Explorer. It was last redesigned for the 2006 model year with a new frame, looking very similar to its previous model.
Some controversy resulted after the media highlighted a number of rollovers involving Explorers and Mountaineers fitted with Firestone tires. The Mountaineer has been praised for its excellent handling and stability. The Mountaineer was never sold in Canada. As part of the discontinuation of the Mercury brand, production of the Mountaineer ended in late 2010.
Background
In 1990, General Motors introduced the Oldsmobile Bravada sport-utility vehicle, derived from the four-door Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. Though far lower in price, the Bravada was marketed as a competitor to the Range Rover (and the later Land Rover Discovery) and Toyota Land Cruiser. While sharing its body with the Blazer, Oldsmobile differentiated the Bravada with the use of model-specific trim and a dedicated all-wheel drive powertrain (in place of part-time four-wheel drive). For 1993, Jeep briefly revived the long-running Grand Wagoneer nameplate as part of the Jeep Grand Cherokee model line, using woodgrain exterior trim and a leather interior; limited sales led to its cancellation after a single model year.
As a response to the Bravada and the Grand Wagoneer, Ford introduced the 1993 Ford Explorer Limited in 1992. In contrast to the outdoors-themed Explorer Eddie Bauer, the Limited was geared towards on-road driving; it was fitted with all-wheel drive in place of traditional four-wheel drive. The Limited was also distinguished by monochromatic body trim, body-color bumpers, and chrome wheels.
As part of the redesign of the Explorer for 1995, the Limited remained part of the Explorer lineup, with the segment gaining additional competitors through the use of badge engineering. For 1996, the Acura SLX (Isuzu Trooper), Infiniti QX4 (Nissan Pathfinder), and the larger Lexus LX450 (Toyota Land Cruiser) were introduced together.
As these brands, along with Oldsmobile, competed more directly with luxury brands than the Ford model line, Ford Motor Company sought to develop SUVs for its Lincoln-Mercury division. To minimize model overlap, Mercury was chosen to sell a version of the mid-size Ford Explorer, while Lincoln would sell a version of the then-upcoming full-size Ford Expedition.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-11-05
- VIN: 4M2ZU86E25U
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I PURCHASED A USED 2005 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER LAST MONTH, WITH 135,400 MILES, WHILE USING CRUISE CONTROL AND TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE ROAD WENT FROM LEVEL TO A VERY SLIGHT DOWNGRADE. THE CAR THEN JUST SHUT OFF AFTER AUDIBLE WARNING BELL WAS HEARD. NOTICED DASHBOARD LIGHTS WERE ALL LIT AND BATTERY GAGE WAS NORMAL. I LOST POWER STEERING, BRAKES AND OIL PRESSURE. AFTER PULLING SAFELY TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I RESTED FOR 30 SECONDS BEFORE RESTARTING THE CAR, WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY OPERATED NORMALLY. AFTER TAKING IT IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND SAFETY CHECK, I WENT ON A 450 MILE WEEKEND TRIP AND HAD NO ISSUES, RESTRICTING CRUISE CONTROL TO HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE OTHER DAY, I WAS TRAVELING ON A DIFFERENT STRETCH OF LEVEL ROAD IN MY TOWN WHILE USING CRUISE CONTROL AT APPROX. 35 MPH. AFTER HEADING INTO A SLIGHT DOWNGRADE, I AGAIN HEARD THE WARNING BELL, FOLLOWED BY ENGINE SHUT OFF. A "CHECK GAGE" LIGHT CAME ON AND I LOST POWER STEERING, OIL PRESSURE AND BRAKES. THIS TIME, I GENTLY SHIFTED THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, AND WHILE COASTING AT 15-20 MPH I TURNED THE IGNITION OFF BEFORE RESTARTING WITHOUT ISSUE. THE CAR HAS SUBSEQUENTLY OPERATED NORMALLY, BUT I HAVE NOT ENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL AT ANY SPEED.

ONCE THE CAR WAS SAFELY OFF THE ROAD AND PLACED IN PARK IT WOULD START AND CONTINUE TO OPERATE. THE FORD DEALER SAID THAT THERE WAS NOT FAULT CODE IN THE COMPUTER, THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AND COULD NOT FIND ANY FAULT IN THE ENGINE SYSTEM. FORD SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES SAID I SHOULD GO A DIFFERENT FORD DEALER AND SEE IF THEY COULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I FIND SIMILAR ENGINE FAILURES DOCUMENTED ON THE INTERNET FOR THIS GENERATION OF CAR. MORE CURRENT SIMILAR MODEL ARE NOT REPORTED TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM. THUS I ASSUME FORD FOUND AND FIXED THIS PROBLEM. I ASKED THEM TO TELL ME HOW THEY SOLVED THE PROBLEM, THEY SAID THAT WAS NOT POSSIBLE. SO, I HAVE AN OTHERWISE GOOD CAR WHICH I CAN DO USE NOR IN GOOD CONSCIENCE SELL TO SOMEONE ELSE. PLEASE HELP! *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-04-02
- VIN: 4M2DU86W65Z
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: SOMETIMES WHEN I'M DRIVING AROUND 35 MPH, THE CAR WILL SEND AN AUDIBLE WARNING SIGNAL, MOST OF THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS COME ON AND THE ENGINE ABRUPTLY SHUTS OFF. IT NEVER HAPPENS WITH MY WIFE WHO IS THE PRIMARY DRIVER OF THIS VEHICLE. THIS BEGAN SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE AND WAS MENTIONED TO OUR L/M DEALER (BEFORE THEY WENT OUT OF BUSINESS). I JUST MADE THE CORRELATION WITH THE SPEED CONTROL LAST WEEKEND. IN FACT, I CAN DUPLICATE THE ISSUE NOW. THE SHUTOFF OCCURS DURING DECELERATION WHEN SPEED CONTROL IS ENGAGED AROUND 35 MPH. SINCE MY WIFE ONLY USES SPEED CONTROL ON THE INTERSTATE, IT HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO HER.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-12-17
- VIN: 4M2DU86W55Z
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: "TAKATA RECALL" PURCHASED THE VEHICLE WITH 158,000 MILES ON IT. OWNED FOR ONE MONTH. BARELY DRIVING EVEN 12 MILES A DAY AS I HAVE BEEN LAID OFF FROM JOB. VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN DRIVEWAY, SITTING. OPENED THE REAR LIFT GATE TO RETRIEVE GROCERIES AND CLOSED GATE. REAR WINDOW BLEW OUT INTO A MILLION PIECES WITH THE CENTER PIECE THAT IS PLASTIC? TWISTED AS WELL. DID NOTICE CRACK IN PANEL NEAR THE EMBLEM SHORTLY AFTER THE PURCHASE OF VEHICLE AND I THOUGHT THAT THE PRIOR OWNER MAY HAVE BACKED INTO SOMETHING , ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO DENT OR PAINT MARKED UP NEAR THE CRACK, SO I WAS STUMPED AS TO HOW IT GOT THAT WAY). AFTER INQUIRING ON THE INTERNET, I FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE LIFT GATE PANEL AND GLASS FALLING OUT. I HAD SEALED THE CRACK WITH CLEAR SILICONE JUST A WEEK AFTER PURCHASING IN ORDER TO KEEP THE WATER OUT OF THE LIFT GATE. DEALER RAN MY VIN AND SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THIS VEHICLE. I PURCHASED A VEHICLE REPORT THIS MORNING FOR MY VIN AND IT INDICATES THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON GLASS THAT STATES THE #DOT430 IS DEFECTIVE GLASS. I AM NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE STAMPING ON MY GLASS AS THE DEALERSHIP/BODYSHOP REMOVED THAT PANEL AND THREW OUT THE PANEL IN THE GARBAGE. THEY SEALED THE REAR LIFT GATE WITH PLASTIC WHILE THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER EVALUATES. I KNOW THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN ONGOING BY ALL THE REPORTS THAT I HAVE READ ONLINE AND SHOULD BE COVERED BY FORD OR WHATEVER MANUFACTURER WHO SUPPLIED PARTS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND SHOULD NOT BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OWNER TO FIX. MY INSURANCE COMPANY TOLD ME LAST WEEK THAT I MAY BE RESPONSIBLE SINCE I WAS NOT INVOLVED IN AN CAR ACCIDENT. THIS SHOULD NOT BE MY RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY FOR!
