The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.

The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.

Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
  • VIN: JTNK4RBE4K3
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: At around 36,500 miles, my Toyota Corolla began experiencing issues with the coolant bypass valve, leading to engine overheating. This malfunction has significantly impacted my ability to drive safely, as the vehicle displays a notification every five seconds, obstructing my view of the digital speedometer and making it difficult to accurately monitor my speed. The issue was not indicated by a check engine light but a persistent "Engine Maintenance Required" message. This defect poses a serious safety risk, and there's a potential class-action lawsuit in progress regarding this very issue, suggesting Toyota might have known about the defect but failed to disclose it. The faulty component is not available for inspection upon request. As more people began to experience similar circumstances, it could lead to fatalities. Other participants to the forums says the issues start when their covered warranty expires. Within these forums there's a inconstancy of service centers honoring fixes, with no cost, knowing that there is an issue. I took the car to both a third-party mechanic and an authorized dealership, and both confirmed the problem. I was quoted $732.85 for the parts and labor within my area. I also called Toyota Global which I was told "a low mileage car shouldn't be having this issue", however, there are countless of forums saying otherwise. **Toyota Models Affected** 2019 Toyota RAV4 2020 Toyota RAV4 2021 Toyota RAV4 2022 Toyota RAV4 2023 Toyota RAV4 2019 Toyota Corolla 2020 Toyota Corolla 2021 Toyota Corolla 2022 Toyota Corolla 2023 Toyota Corolla [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
  • VIN: JTNK4RBE9K3
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I am up to date with all my maintenance but at 67k miles I had a message stating “Engine Maintenance Required” message on my dashboard. I took it to the dealership and they identified the cooler bypass valve needed to be replace, apparently this is a common issue and has not been addressed by Toyota. Plus it’s difficult to find the part that needs to be replaced. There was no check engine light, and everytime I turned on the AC the engine maintenance required message would pop back up. If this is a known issue Toyota needs to make this issue public and parts available.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-07
  • VIN: JTNK4RBE0K3
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I got a “Engine Maintenance Required” warning message. I check with the dealer, the dealer inspected and told me about a faulty coolant bypass valve which the dealership told us a common problem for Toyota RAV4 and Corolla. The dealer did a diagnostic and found that engine coolant bypass valve circuit short to battery - (P268115). They asked me to order the part. A faulty coolant bypass valve risked my vehicle of a failure of the cooling system and so the engine. I had to pay $113.40 for the diagnostic and $331.75 for repair. Since it is a common problem, the manufacturer has to recall and replace the faulty part and pay the cost of the part and labor for replacing the faulty part.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-15
  • VIN: 5YFBURHE9KP
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On June 15, a message appeared on the multi-informational panel that the pre-collision system was unavailable. An orange warning symbol also appeared on the dash. Car was repaired a at Kendall, Toyota, 10943 S. Dixie Highway, Miami, FL 33156 in Kendall, Florida. The Millimeter Wave Radar Sensor was replaced. The unit itself cost $843 and replacement labor was $350. Like other Toyota radar sensors, I believe this one has design defects. It is a safety issue. I assume that many people will not replace it. The message on the panel does not say the unit needs replacement. I retained the faulty unit and it is available for inspection. It is Toyota part #88210-07010. There are no signs of damage that I could see. The unit has not been open and I have put it in a baggie. It has not been inspected by anyone. The new part has the same part number. There were no prior warnings or symptoms.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-20
  • VIN: JTNK4RBE5K3
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: we took our corolla to the San Luis Obispo toyota dealership for replacement of fuel pump per national recall of that part. Since then whenever we park the car on an incline we can strongly smell gas fumes in the cabin. When we took it back stating the problem they took it in but did not touch anything on the car (there were items on the back seat they would need to remove I order to get to the gas tank that contains the fuel pump.) When we went in the invoice was marked "call after five" in pencil

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-21

  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine Coolant Bypass Valve faulty. Charged $176.95 for the dealer to diagnose what is already known issue. The dealer wanted $663 to replace the part. Toyota knows about this issue yet acts like they had to perform $176 diagnose. The car never blew any codes CIL and they say that this particular part doesnt cause a code but had to use a " special" diagnose tool.

I did not hit anything and air bags did not deploy but the light is on showing some issue but I can not get into dealership to check for sometime. • VIN: JTNK4RBEXK3
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The clutch slave cylinder started leaking fluid. Luckily I noticed this issue before the level was too low. This is especially dangerous as this fluid is shared with the brake system so a loss of too much fluid could cause both a loss of clutch control and a loss of brakes. Negative 2019 Toyota Corolla car reviews

  1. Kiel McLaughlin 2025-01-04

I purchased the 2019 Corolla LE and have been driving it for a few weeks now. During the first week, I noticed that the tank was empty after driving only 203.05 miles. The second week, I was able to drive 206 miles before the tank was empty, and the following week I was able to drive 213 miles. I primarily drive on the highway to and from work. However, during a recent trip from Miami to Sarasota, which is a distance of 232 miles on the highway with some city driving, the tank was empty at 312.03 miles. The car is advertised as having a fuel economy of 36 highway/28 city, but this is not even close to what I am experiencing. I have brought this issue to the attention of the dealership, but they are giving me the runaround and insisting that there is nothing wrong with the car.

  2. Sammie Mitchell 2024-09-26

Yes, I had a 2019 Corolla SE. It was a very nice car. Unfortunately, it was totaled in an accident, so I had to buy a 2020 Corolla SE. I have to say, I was disappointed with the 2020 model. It seems that all of the amenities and options that the 2019 model had are gone. Overall, I would give the 2020 Corolla one star.

  3. Mckenzie Schmitt 2024-09-12

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2019 Corolla. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it and have had to bring it in for a couple of safety recalls. The only downside is that the service center only works on weekdays during specific hours, which has been a bit inconvenient for me. However, I was able to schedule an appointment for next month. While I was initially impressed when I purchased the car, I have been a bit disappointed with the recent issues. Overall, I would recommend considering other options before making a purchase. Thanks for listening!

  4. Arden Oberbrunner 2024-05-16

If you enjoy sitting on the seatbelt buckle because these cars are too small, then this car is perfect for you.

  5. Sage Altenwerth 2024-05-11

I bought this car brand new in late April 2019 and have driven 13,000 miles so far. Overall, I like it as it's comfortable and drives well. Although I was initially happy to achieve a maximum MPG of 38.6, it has recently fallen to 36 MPG which I feel is a bit low. I have noticed that the car feels quite heavy and the transmission seems to be laboring to get up to highway speed. Personally, I'm not a fan of the CVT transmission as it just feels 'off' to me. However, all the electronics seem to work well with no problems. The rear backup camera can get foggy, dirty, or wet easily, which can make it difficult to see when reversing. Additionally, I have noticed that the rear wheel wells are missing the shield or inner cover that most cars have to keep mud and dirt from getting into and under the car's body. Although it has mud flaps, the lack of shields makes the car look bad and I'm surprised that the top trim package doesn't include them. Despite this, I still really like the car. It's just that my older Corolla was made better and got better gas mileage.

Positive 2019 Toyota Corolla car reviews

  1. Estevan Bayer 2024-11-17

The dealer had initially informed us that there would be no sale on the new 2019 Corolla. However, just two days after we purchased the car, a $500 discount sale began, followed by a $1000 discount sale just five days later.

  2. Ole Gorczany 2024-10-29

I have been using a Camry for several years and recently purchased a Corolla 2019. I really like all the features that the Corolla provides, making it very suitable for driving in the city. The only issue I have had so far is with fuel usage. The model is advertised to have a mileage of up to 30 MPG in the city, but so far I have never reached that (without any air-conditioning or heater use, of course). It is always around 24.2-3. Okay, I may use the brake more than other people (?) but still, it is quite below my expectations. The real issue that I have is with the actual gas usage. It takes around 12 gallons to fill the tank full. If the average MPG reading is correct, I expect to use at least 230 miles (300 miles according to the advertisement) with a full tank of gas, but I can only manage 160-170 miles. Therefore, I find myself in a situation where the MPG is below the car's display of average MPG and much much below the MPG (almost half) than the model's advertisement.

I added blind spot warning, upgraded the radio and speakers, sport wheel rims, and black covers to match the car's paint job. I even pinstriped it myself. It looks like an XLE and I love it! The safety sense works great, but it would have been even better if it included Android Auto. Overall, I'm really happy with how I brought this late model car up to my expectations. Just for fun, I took it to the Miami-Homestead race track and it can do 105-110. Such a blast!

The 2020 Corolla is a significantly improved model compared to its predecessors. It offers a much better ride, handling, and overall comfort.
