2018 Toyota Corolla problems
The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.
The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.
Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

Common 2018 Toyota Corolla problems
The Toyota Corolla is a popular compact car, known for its reliability and fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, it can experience certain problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners of the 2018 Toyota Corolla:
- Jerky Acceleration: Many drivers have reported experiencing jerky acceleration with their 2018 Toyota Corolla. This problem can be caused by a number of components, including dirty fuel filters, faulty spark plugs, a blocked catalytic converter, or a damaged fuel pump. If you notice this issue, it's best to take your car to a trained mechanic who can diagnose and fix the root cause of the problem.
- MAF Sensor Problem: Some drivers have reported issues with the MAF (Mass Airflow) sensor on their 2018 Toyota Corolla. Problems with the MAF sensor can have symptoms including poor performance and rough idling. If you suspect that your car's MAF sensor is causing issues, it's best to take it to a specialist who can diagnose and fix the problem.
- Vibration at High Speeds: Some owners have reported that their 2018 Toyota Corolla vibrates when reaching high speeds. While it's normal to feel some vibrations at higher speeds, excessive vibrations can indicate a problem with the car's suspension system. The average quote for suspension repairs on the Toyota Corolla is £137.37 when booked with WhoCanFixMyCar.
- Fuel Pump Recall: The 2018 Toyota Corolla was included in a recall for a potential fuel pump failure. Specifically, this was a low-pressure fuel pump, which directs fuel from the tank into the engine. Among the symptoms of a bad low-pressure fuel pump, engine stall is the most obvious. If you haven't brought your car in for the recall, it's important to do so to avoid potential safety issues.
- Clunky Shifting: Some drivers have reported an issue with clunky shifting in their 2018 Toyota Corolla, particularly when shifting into second gear. This problem may be more noticeable on hot days, as the shift cable ends can expand and contract with temperature changes. While this issue is less of a safety concern and more of a nuisance, it can compromise the driver's feeling of control over the vehicle.
- Airbag Issues: There have been reports of airbag issues in the 2018 Toyota Corolla, although these are relatively uncommon. If you suspect that your car's airbags are not functioning properly, it's important to take it to a specialist for diagnosis and repair.
- Electrical Accessories: Some drivers have reported issues with electrical accessories in their 2018 Toyota Corolla, such as remote entry not working or the lock not engaging after parking. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, such as a faulty body control module or a low battery. If you experience these issues, it's best to take your car to a trained mechanic who can diagnose and fix the problem.
In general, the 2018 Toyota Corolla is a reliable car with few major mechanical issues. Minor glitches, particularly with the infotainment system and some electronic features, have been noted, but these are typically resolved swiftly and under warranty by dealerships. The dealer service has received high praise for responsiveness and professionalism, contributing to the Corolla's reputation as a dependable vehicle.

I was sitting on the side of the highway for 12 hours trying to figure out what to do with the car because I didn't have money for a tow truck. Fortunately nothing terribly bad happened as a result However had I not heard the trim loose and pulled over and the car had died in the highway it could have been way worse.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5YFBURHE3JP
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: My brother was driving his car and it was involved in a hard right front impact yesterday after a young girl pulled out in front of him. None of the airbags went off, severe front end damage on the right side to the fender, wheel, axle, radiator, hood, oil pan, and other front end components. The right front wheel is completely bent and the right front tire blew out. Front right headlight completely missing. Incident happened going approximately 30-40 MPH. Thankfully he’s okay, but the car is most likely totaled. The steering wheel airbag did NOT deploy and the right curtain airbag did NOT deploy. My brother could have gotten killed. Thankfully he’s only complaining about leg pain and chest pain, but the steering wheel airbag would’ve mitigated his injuries. A few years ago, he got sideswiped very hard on the left side and the vehicle needed 2 new doors and a rear bumper. The left side curtain airbags did not deploy in this scenario either. I’m very disappointed in Toyota that they built a death trap such as the 2018 Corolla.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-17
- VIN: 5YFBURHE2JP

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-04
- VIN: 5YFBURHE2JP
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: After vehicle is driven for approximately 15 mins or more and then comes to a long stop at a red light or drive thru line (while transmission is in drive and foot is on the brake), idle drops to 500rpm and car starts shaking as if it's about to die. Issue has been ongoing for years even before the fuel pump recall fix was performed but didn't start until around 25 thousand miles. Issue isn't the AC compressor cycling, it is not the secondary/auxillary cooling fans engaging, no check engine lights, no other symptoms. If it gets worse, it could cause the vehicle to completely stall in traffic posing a safety hazard. Shifting the transmission to neutral or park stops the issue. Shifting into neutral and then back to drive temporarily corrects the issue but then it re-occurs after at least 30 seconds or more. Many other 2017 and 2018 Corolla owners have reported this issue as well online and nobody has found the cause.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-09-02
- VIN: 5YFBURHE4JP
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The car lost power completely and shut down. The first time this occurred was on the freeway 601 in traffic in September 2019. Took it to the dealer and nothing would show up as being defective. Dealer kept the vehicle for maybe a week and was about to return it back to us but a service manager decided to research the problem further because we told him that we did not feel safe as this could happen again in traffic. Service manager advised that the fuel pump would be replaced. A year later we read that a recall has been issued for a fuel pump issue, we called and were told that our VIN was not part of the recall. We were still concerned because we wanted to insure that the replacement fuel pump was not one being recalled. We contacted Toyota and a case # was issued. Nothing else could be done. The vehicle shut down again on July 2022 and Sept 2022 took it again to the dealer and nothing wrong shows on on their diagnostic machine. Vehicle shut down May 2023 and it is still not on a recall list. There are no warning lights alerting the car shut down is about to happen.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-06
- VIN: 2T1BURHE9JC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Dashboard paint gets bubbles due to a lack of shielding which leads to covering/erasing the warning lights/signs on the dashboard. This may lead to a safety problem regarding the warning signs. The vehicle was inspected by the dealer and I was informed that the shielding behind the Dashboard is missing which led to the dashboard paint popping up.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

The dealer was contacted and stated that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed at the dealer, and that the replacement steering column was out of stock nationwide. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the VIN was not under recall. No further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 35,000.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-08
- VIN: 2T1BURHE0JC
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: While on the road but in a slow bumper to bumper traffic, the engine turned off. Scary situation. I had to pull over on the side and managed to restart the engine. Same incident happened and the engine suddenly turned off while at a gas station
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-07
- VIN: 5YFBURHE3JP
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On the morning of 12/7 I tried starting my car, and the engine wouldn't start. There were no warning lights. Finally late afternoon it started up and I immediately drove to Toyota in town. They said my battery was probably dead and replaced it for $160. I then drove to Costco, parked, and then started the car up and went to Hyvee. When driving out of Hyvee, my car's big red battery light popped up, my car started shaking, and then it shut off and would not turn back on. I had to pay for a tow back to Toyota ($196). Today, 12/8, Toyota in town calls me and said it was never a problem with my battery (yet I can't get a refund for them not even checking it in the first place), and that the issue is a fuel pump malfunction. They said the part will cost $1,463 and I will not be able to start my car let alone be safe to drive without it fixed. I am a student and this was the first car I bought and paid off. I have not had any problems with my car, and pride myself in taking very good care of it. I could have gotten in an extremely bad car accident with my car stopping and shutting down, putting not only my life at risk, but other drivers as well. There have been hundreds of reports of 2018 Toyota Corrolla's having fuel pump malfunction recalls; however, my specific VIN has 0 unrepaired recalls listed. This is completely out of the blue and with how new my car is (55,000 miles), how great of a job I do at taking care of it (this is my very first issue ever), and how many previous reports exist for the exact same issue (fuel pump malfunction) with the same year/make/model, it is shocking that my VIN has no associated recalls and am therefore receiving no financial help. I am lucky that I am safe and unharmed, because if this were happening on an interstate (which I frequently take to get to school), I easily would have died.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-04
- VIN: 5YFBURHE0JP
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Noise cracking when I make right my car has 57,000 miles I took the car to the dealer they were charging me 90 dollars end the day they told me that parts it’s not corvette the warranty

Additionally, the contact stated that after restarting and refueling, the vehicle was stalling and although she depressed the accelerator pedal, the vehicle delayed accelerating. The contact referenced failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V012000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, VIN was not included in the recall. The contact then stated that after the vehicle was refueled and she came to a left turn to make a U-turn, the vehicle was stalling and then jerked forward independently, causing her to crash into the back of an attached trailer. The airbags failed to deploy. There was an additional passenger in the vehicle, however, the contact stated that there were no injuries and that a police report was not filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 19,000.

The contact was able to restart the vehicle after 30 minutes. The contact then drove to her residence. The failure reoccurred while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where unknown codes were cleared. The dealer test drove the vehicle and diagnosed that no issues were found; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that she would be responsible for the cost of the repair as the recall repair of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V012000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) had previously been completed on the vehicle. So glad to hear that you're enjoying your new car! It's great to hear that it drives so well.
-
This is a great car! You'll never have problems with it and it has good gas mileage. I've only owned Toyotas in the past, and this is the third Corolla I've owned!
-
I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I absolutely love my car. Specifically, I think the Corolla is a fantastic model.
-
I can't wait to see how this car performs in the snow! My garage in the back alley never gets plowed by the city. Last week, I traveled to Emlenton where I own two acres up from a quarter-mile dirt road. The road was wet, rutted, and difficult to traverse with all the leaves. When I reached the top, the car temporarily stalled in a rutted puddle.
-
It's a bit lower to the ground for me since I'm used to SUVs, but this car is very quiet and drives smoothly.

We rented this car for a week and had some trouble with the cruise control and sun visors. The cruise control seemed to only work on flat pavement, which was a bit frustrating since most roads aren't completely flat. Additionally, the sun visors didn't extend far enough to block the sun from side windows, which was a bit of a nuisance. However, overall we had a decent experience with the car. While we may not choose to purchase a Toyota in the future, we appreciate the opportunity to try it out.

I have owned four Corollas, including a 2002, 2009, 2014, and my current 2018 manual SE. While I have had some issues with this car, such as acceleration and handling on the highway, I am looking to trade it in for something else. Unfortunately, it has not been the best fit for my long road trips due to discomfort and limited space for passengers. Additionally, I have experienced some technical difficulties with the cruise control and Bluetooth. Despite these challenges, I have appreciated the reliability of the Corolla brand in the past and will continue to consider it in the future.

I bought this car in October 2020 with around 18k miles on it. Since then, I have driven it up to 31k miles and have kept up with its maintenance. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the Bluetooth connection, which has been cutting out and disconnecting intermittently. Although it would work for a month or so, it completely failed a week ago, just two months outside of the warranty period. It's frustrating that I can't play music or take phone calls in a 2018 car. Additionally, the car has a rough idle after being driven for about an hour, which feels like it's going to stall. Although the service department couldn't replicate the problem, they advised me to bring it in if it happens again. Unfortunately, it happens every day. I hope Toyota will cover the parts under their 'certified pre-owned warranty' if it breaks, but I'm not holding my breath. It's disappointing to be stuck with a lemon, but I'm hopeful that we can find a solution.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to follow up on the paint problem that was reported to the manufacturer a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, it seems that nothing has been done about it yet. Additionally, I've noticed that the performance of the engine can be a bit lackluster at times, especially when it's needed the most. There's a loud ticking noise that can be quite distracting. Is there anything that can be done to address these issues? Thank you for your help!

I recently purchased a used 2018 Toyota Corolla LE Eco and unfortunately, after just two weeks of driving in the city, I received a tire pressure warning. While this is not ideal, I am confident in the safety features of the vehicle and appreciate its smooth performance. Although I am unable to use ENTUNE with my Samsung Android, the Bluetooth capability is still very convenient and the car is quite economical.
