2005 Lincoln Aviator problems

lincoln logo

The Lincoln Aviator is a mid-size, three-row luxury SUV manufactured and marketed under the Lincoln brand of Ford Motor Company — and now in its second generation, with a hiatus from 2006 to 2020.

The first generation Aviator was manufactured for 2003–2005 model years as a rebadged variant of the third generation Ford Explorer — and assembled at the now-closed St. Louis Assembly in Hazelwood, Missouri, alongside the Explorer and Mountaineer.

For the 2020 model year, Lincoln reintroduced the Aviator as a badge engineered variant of the sixth generation Ford Explorer manufactured at Chicago Assembly and offered with a plug-in hybrid variant.

  • Summary: I HAVE THE SAME CRACKING PROBLEM WITH THE BACK GATE WHICH RESULTED IN THE BREAKING OF HINGES. ALSO A KNOWN DEFECT IN USING DEFECTIVE PARTS IN THE ENGINE SUCH AS TIMING CHAIN CASSETTES AND TENSIONER. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-07-21
  • VIN: 5LMEU88H15Z
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: OWNER OF 2005 LINCOLN AVIATOR. I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET THE GEAR SHIFT OUT OF PARK. I HAD THE AVIATOR TOWED TO A FAMILY MEMBER'S AUTOMOTIVE GARAGE AND WAS TOLD THAT I WILL NEED TO HAVE THE ENTIRE GEAR SHIFT REPLACED. UPON DOING SOME RESEARCH, IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN THIS YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL. I HAVE READ ENDLESS TESTIMONIES FROM OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS WITH THE EXACT DISPUTE. THE PART AND LABOR WILL COST ME APPROXIMATELY $1100.00 AT MY FAMILY'S GARAGE, ONE CAN ONLY GUESS THE DOLLAR AMOUNT WILL DOUBLE AT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. MY CAR IS DRIVEABLE, HOWEVER, WHEN IN PARK, I WILL HAVE TO PUT MY EMERGENCY BRAKE ON. I WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE GEAR SHIFT, IF BUMPED, MAY MOVE OUT OF PARK EVEN WITHOUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. I AM APPALLED THAT FORD/LINCOLN MOTOR COMPANY HAS NOT TAKEN RESPONSIBILITY OF THE DEFECTED MECHANISM. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE AND RAISES MANY QUESTIONS ON HOW IMPORTANT VEHICLE SAFETY IS TO FORD/LINCOLN MOTOR COMPANY, NOT TO MENTION A TOTAL INCONVENIENCE FINANCIALLY! THIS IS MY FOURTH VEHICLE FROM FORD/LINCOLN MOTOR COMPANY AND I HIGHLY DOUBT I WILL PURCHASE ANOTHER BASED ON THE COMPANY'S LACK IN ADDRESSING THE MATTER. I AM A MOTHER OF ONE CHILD AND NOW DO NOT FEEL SECURE DRIVING A VEHICLE THAT I ONCE FELT VERY PROTECTED IN.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-08-24
  • VIN: 5LMEU88H05Z
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: WHEN PURCHASED USED 2 YRS OLD [XXX], I NOTICED A CRACK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LIFTGATE. I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE FOR ALMOST 7YRS AND HAVE TAKEN VERY GOOD CARE OF IT, BUT I NOW HAVE 3 CRACKS IN THE LIFTGATE. IT SEEMS TO BE VERY THIN ACROSS THE BOTTOM OF THE BACK WINDOW AND EVERY TIME YOU OPEN AND CLOSE THE WINDOW, IT PUTS STRESS ACROSS THE BOTTOM OF IT. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL BECAUSE THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A DEFECT!! INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR UPDATED 4/19/2016 *JS
2015-01-13

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-11-01
  • VIN: 5LMEU88H85Z
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I NOTICED A CRACK ON THE BACK PANEL OF MY TAILGATE. THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT OR INCIDENT AND SINCE THEN I HAVE NOTICED AT LEAST 3 OTHER CARS IN MY SMALL TOWN WITH THE SAME DEFECT. I HAVE WRITTEN TO FORD AND GOTTEN NO RESPONSE. FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN ON THE INTERNET, THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED PROBLEM. I FEEL THAT FORD/LINCOLN SHOULD RECALL THE AFFECTED MODELS OF CAR (INCLUDING FORD EXPLORERS) AND MAKE THESE REPAIRS. THE MECHANISM THAT KEEPS MY TAILGATE WINDOW CLOSED AND LOCKED IS ALSO BROKEN AND I THINK IT IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE CRACK IN THE TAILGATE. THIS COMPROMISES OUR SAFETY IN THE CAR BY MAKING THE CAR UNABLE TO BE LOCKED PROPERLY. SOMEONE COULD EASILY GET INTO THE CAR FROM THE TAILGATE AND STEAL ANYTHING IN THE CAR, STEAL THE CAR ITSELF, AND POSE AN IMMEDIATE THREAT TO OUR PERSONAL SAFETY. *TR

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-12-30
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A 2005 LINCOLN AVIATOR BRAND NEW. I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS MANY OTHERS WITH THE CRACK. TOLD FORD LINCOLN MERCURY ABOUT IT THE FIRST COLD SEASON FOR THE CAR, 2005/2006. ALTHOUGH I HEARD AND SAW SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME ISSUE FORD HAS DONE NOTHING. NOW THE GATE WON?T CLOSE, THE WINDOW WON?T CLOSE BECAUSE THE MECHANISM HAS CORRODED ALLOWING IT TO OPEN ON ITS OWN. THERE IS NO SECURITY WITH THE VEHICLE NOW AND THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! EVEN BETTER MY GLASS COMPANY ORDERED REPLACEMENT 07/31/2014 AND I STILL HAVE NOT SEEN IT. I SPOKE WITH [XXX], AND THEIR SUPERVISOR AT FORD CUSTOMER CARE RELATIONS WHO WAS OF NO HELP. THEY CAN'T ANSWER WHEN THE GLASS WILL COME IN. THEY GIVE DATES IT MAY BE AVAILABLE BUT WILL NOT GUARANTY. • Summary: ONE MORNING I NOTICED THAT A CRACK HAD APPEARED ON THE BACK OF MY VEHICLE ON THE LIFT GATE RIGHT BY THE LINCOLN EMBLEM. I CALLED AND SPOKE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY ADVISED ME IT WAS A COMMON OCCURRENCE THAT HAPPENS FOR NO REASON ON LINCOLN AVIATORS OF CERTAIN YEARS. NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN THE LIFT GATE HINGE ON THE RIGHT SIDE HAS SLIGHTLY SHIFTED AND I HAVE NOT EVEN OPENED IT IN MONTHS. THIS I WAS NOTIFIED IS ALSO ANOTHER COMMON DEFECT ON THESE VEHICLES! I LITERALLY AM SCARED TO EVEN OPEN THE BACK LIFT GATE NOW AND NOTHING HAS HAPPENED TO CAUSE EITHER OF THESE ISSUES. *TR

Negative 2005 Lincoln Aviator car reviews

"Grinding noise" when A/C turned on (hot or cold) FOMOCO states this is normal. NO FIX DESIGN FAULT aka DEFECTIVE. FOMOCO says it's happening on all Explorer size vehicles. Not true, don't believe it! Only occurs on '03 & '04 Lincoln Aviator units. Considering Class Action Suite

  2. Michael Herzog 2024-09-17

Hello! I recently traded in my Mercury Mountaineer for this car. Unfortunately, at only 11,500 miles, it shakes when sitting at a traffic light. I've taken it in for repairs three times, but each time I've been told that it's up to specifications. I've owned around 50 cars and have never had a $45,000 Lincoln that shakes like this. Even my water bottle looks like a tsunami! I'm currently searching for a reliable mechanic to fix the issue. If I can't get it fixed, I'll have to sell it as soon as possible. Anyone who drives this car would notice the issue. This is my sixth and final Lincoln/Mercury product, and it may be my last American-made car. Best regards, Steve Crouch.

  3. Dock Mertz 2024-09-13

Every electrical component on this vehicle has malfunctioned, including the sound system, reverse warning system, navigation system, heat, air, and windows. The SUV is also quite loud and takes a long time to heat up or cool down. Additionally, the seat warmers take at least 10 minutes to start working. There have also been issues with leaking in the back due to poor craftsmanship. Despite these challenges, I am confident in my ability to address these issues and ensure that this vehicle is functioning optimally.

  4. Fermin Toy 2024-05-20

I understand that you may have had a negative experience with the Lincoln Aviator. However, it's important to note that every car has its own unique set of issues. If you're looking for a reliable car, there are many other options available on the market. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.

  5. Destin Bosco 2024-04-12

In very cold weather, the side window defroster may malfunction and send a stream of cold air, which can be uncomfortable for front seat riders. It seems that Lincoln is familiar with this issue, but unfortunately, they are not willing to fix it. This is an obvious defect that may also be present in other Lincoln products.

Positive 2005 Lincoln Aviator car reviews

  1. Clovis Anderson 2025-01-07

Great to drive! It's powerful and responsive.

  2. Ramiro Koepp 2024-11-21

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your Aviator! It's impressive how well it handles for an SUV, almost like a sports car around curves. The ride is smooth on most road surfaces and there's very little wind or engine noise. The interior design is one of the best I've seen for SUVs, and I love all the safety features it provides, like the rear park assist, turn signal mirrors with reverse tilt, and the darn good brakes with ABS, electronic brake force distribution with brake assist.

  3. Henry Abshire 2024-11-13

I'm so glad I chose this vehicle! I was looking for an American luxury SUV and this one was perfect. I can't wait to see the 2007 release!

  4. Darryl Corwin 2024-11-09

We have had either family vans or SUV's for years, and our Aviator is the best overall car we've ever had. It has great power, is extremely comfortable in town or on a trip, and is fun to drive. Additionally, the dealer took great pains to be sure we knew how to use everything on it before turning us loose!

  5. Bernie Kessler 2024-10-20

I bought the aviator a couple of weeks ago for my wife. The fit and finish is fantastic. Power and handling are great. It was my wife's choice, and it was a good one. I drive it every time she is not! Delivery was outstanding. Lincoln has made some excellent improvements.
