2019 Mazda Mazda3 problems
The Mazda3 (known as the Mazda Axela in Japan (first three generations), a combination of "accelerate" and "excellent") is a compact car manufactured by Mazda. It was first introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, replacing the Familia/323/Protegé in the C-segment.
The second-generation Mazda3 for the 2009 model year was unveiled in late 2008, with the sedan premiering at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show. For the 2012 model year, Mazda began offering the Mazda3 with their newly developed Skyactiv technology, including a more rigid body, a new direct-injection engine, and a new 6-speed transmission.
The third generation was introduced in mid-2013 as a 2014 model year. The third-generation model is the first Mazda3 to adopt the "Kodo" design language and a more complete Skyactiv range of technologies.
The fourth-generation Mazda3 for the 2019 model year was unveiled in November 2018 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the 2019 model, the all-new Mazda3 is equipped with the updated Skyactiv technologies, including a spark-controlled compression ignition engine marketed as the Skyactiv-X.
A performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 was marketed until 2013 as the Mazdaspeed3 in North America, Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, and the Mazda3 MPS in Europe and Australia.
The Mazda3 became one of Mazda's fastest-selling vehicles, with cumulative sales in January 2019 of over 6 million units.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-29
- VIN: JM1BPBDM9K1
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The car has had a lot of issues. The inside driver side glass for the display dash fogged up and had to be replaced. The first replacement didn’t fix it and I had to threaten legal action to get Mazda to replace the glass a second time before it finally resolved the issue. The car (which is washed and waxed weekly), got rust on it in year 3. Mazda repaired it and promised it would not return. 14 months later the rust is back and Mazda won’t repair it. I have escalated with no avail. I have had to replace the air conditioning fan for over $1K. I bought the car brand new with 59 miles on it, I have kept up on every maintenance and kept records and today it has 18,000 miles and I am told the transmission needs replaced. 18,000 miles on a garage kept car? This is not right!
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-05
- VIN: JM1BPANM4K1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I had an oil change back in April of 2024. I have been driving the last couple of days and after about 15 minutes my low oil light comes. this car has 58.800 miles on it. I stopped at a oil express to see if I was low on oil but they said I was at full. I also checked to see if they saw anything leaking but they also said they didn't see anything. if the gasket is bad 58,000 that is telling me it's a faulty product. I'm afraid that my engine could lock up on the highway and cause a bad accident.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-20
- VIN: JM1BPBJM9K1
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I noticed oil was leaking and my engine was steaming after driving. My mechanic found a crack in a cylinder after watching YouTube and finding out Mazda has this issue.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-19
- VIN: JM1BPAMM2K1
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-19
- VIN: JM1BPBDM5K1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The engine coolant system/electronic coolant control valve is known for failing on the N/A Skyactiv-G engine. When it fails, it fails stuck open. There is a TSB out for this problem (01-011/21). This results in the engine coolant never making it to operating temperature, and poor heater performance during cold weather. When I took it to a dealer, they stated that the check engine light must come on from DTC P0126:00 before they can address the problem under warranty. Even after driving the car and having 30+ minute drives where the temperature gauge never makes it past the first tick (blue), I haven't had the check engine light come on. It's unclear what circumstances are required for DTC P0126:00 to occur, but I've never had a car essentially not get warm during an entire 30+ mile highway drive, even when it's 0 fahrenheit outside. It appears like this is a degenerative problem as I did not have this problem last cold season. This year, since the first day it has been colder than about 45 degrees, the engine has struggled to reach operating temperature, and of course is even worse now that it is colder. Without the heated seat, it would be difficult to be comfortable in this car due to this problem.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01
- VIN: JM1BPALM3K1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Cylinder head is leaking oil due to known defect by Mazda. The rocker arm rubs the cylinder and causes the wall the thin and oil to leak through. Oil sprays on exhaust and other moving parts causing a safety concern due to possible oil combustion. This is in relation to TSB SA-031/21. Only alert is the low engine oil light due to the leak. At this point, oil has already covered a majority of the engine compartment and exhaust manifold.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-10
- VIN: JM1BPBDM4K1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Cracked cylinder head causing oil leak. Confirmed by Mazda Dealership. Vehicle has always had routine maintenance and remote start used to warm engine prior to driving. No warning lights appeared to alert driver prior to noticing issue- took it in because driver could smell burning oil which is a fire risk to safety of occupants while using vehicle. This type of issue is a manufacturer flaw and should be covered with recall since there are a lot of people online experiencing the exact same issue.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-17
- VIN: JM1BPBDM3K1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The vehicle's battery has gone dead on several occasions since replacing the OEM battery. The OEM battery which was approximately 3 years old, also had gone dead, prompting its replacement. The battery has gone dead within 1-2 days of not using the car. Charging the battery by running it is only a temporary fix as the car needs to be constantly driven in order to charge the battery, which is not usual and customary for the maintenance of a vehicle. This cannot be functioning to manufacturer's specifications, as I find it extremely difficult to believe that manufacturer's specifications stipulate to drive the car with more frequency. This is a safety issue. Should this happen during the winter months, an individual may be left stranded. The NHTSA must demand Mazda to issue a safety recall to fix this safety issue.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
- VIN: JM1BPAMM2K1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle will over heat and then show warning messages that auto light system malfunction and engine will shut off randomly.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-13
- VIN: 3MZBPAAL6KM
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Dealer service tech stated the high pressure and low pressure fuel pumps failed and needed replaced. My car was not included in the recall regarding fuel pumps for Mazda, so the dealer would only cover 50 percent of the cost. Service tech and warranty service rep stated that Mazda was aware that what happened to my car is a factory malfunction but because my car is out of warranty they would not cover the entire expense. My car is 3 years old and only has approximately 67,000 miles on the engine. The fuel injectors were replaced at 10,000 miles by warranty. The service tech even stated this is obviously regarding the recall of the fuel pumps and did not understand why my car was not included.

I purchased my Mazda 3 Select about two months ago and have already driven 4000 miles on several road trips. I must say, it is an extremely comfortable and upscale car that is also fun to drive. I previously owned a 2015 Honda Civic (1.5 l turbo) and while both cars are excellent compact cars with many strengths and few weaknesses, I slightly prefer the Mazda due to its superior handling and feel on curved roads. It's just so much fun and almost whimsical to drive! However, I still have a lot of love for my Civic as well.

The 2019 4th gen Mazda3 Sedan Select is a high-value leader in the compact sedan sector. The car boasts an ergonomic multi-function display and controls, a superb instrument cluster display, and front seating comfort with fast simple manual adjustment. The upscale interior fit and finish (black vinyl), key-less walk-away locking, and push-button start add to the car's appeal. The modest, but very usable trunk space, and quiet, comfortable highway cruising make it a great choice. The 2.5L normally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine contributes to low maintenance and long life compared with the small turbocharged engines of most competitors. The performance of this Mazda traditional automatic transmission is much better than the The 'Mazda Connect Owner's Manual' covering the infotainment system referenced in the primary Owner's Manual is only available on the dashboard center display. Unfortunately, it is not available in hard copy. This can be a bit inconvenient, especially when the battery is rapidly depleting, or while driving through traffic. The primary 'Owner's Manual' is quite lengthy, running hundreds of pages, with half of it being safety cautions and warnings from Mazda USA's legal team. These include prohibitions against allowing children to play in the trunk compartment or warnings against jumping from moving cars, with detailed explanations on why these are not good ideas. Despite these minor issues, the 2019 Mazda3 is an excellent package with great design, fit & finish, and strong underlying automobile technology that far exceeds its price point. The purchase from DFW area Hiley Mazda in Hurst (Rich Longworth) was swift, smooth, and very accommodating.

I really must have a manual transmission in a sporty package, but I wasn't expecting such a perfectly balanced offering at this relatively reasonable price. The electric steering is reassuring and not vague. The power band seems to be everywhere from 1,500 rpm up to rev limit. The low profile tires are mated to a firm suspension that never beats you up but always seems sure-footed. The interior is luxurious, the seats spectacular, and the Bose stereo is awe-inspiring. Sure, the rear seat doesn't offer quite the same comfort, but if styling is important, the hatchback is a real attention-grabber. The gas mileage for us is 34.7 mpg for mixed driving, and many highway/local combined trips end up over 41 (up to 42) mpg when driven conservatively.
-
This car has been great to me for the past 4 years. It's been very reliable, comfortable, and I love the way it looks. The only problem I've had is with the suspension - hitting even small potholes can be quite jarring. I've had to replace 4 tires in the past 2 years due to impact breaks, which is a bit concerning. However, I've never had a flat tire, so that's a plus. Overall, I really love this car!

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you recently returned your Mazda 3 2016 lease and were looking for a new lease on the same level. After considering your options, you came to a decision between the Mazda 3 and the Honda Civic. Ultimately, you decided to go with the Honda Civic due to the extra tech options it offers. However, I completely agree that the Mazda 3 is a super car!

The breaking problem was experienced when the car was new, but it was resolved with an update. Despite having gone through three batteries, Mazda has confirmed that everything is in good condition. It appears that the battery drains quickly if the car is not driven daily, especially during winter. Although there seems to be a significant draw, all systems have been checked and confirmed to be functioning properly. This is the most recent experience with a Mazda vehicle.

This is my third Mazda 3 and I was excited to get the new model with all the new technology. However, I have encountered some issues with the car's basic functions such as the bluetooth and HVAC system. Despite Mazda acknowledging these issues and working on a fix, I am disappointed with the quality control. I believe that Mazda can do better and ensure that their cars meet the highest standards. While the car drives nicely and is comfortable, these issues have affected my confidence in the brand. I hope that Mazda will take the necessary steps to address these concerns and improve their products.

The car has class-leading exterior and interior styling. However, the information system is a step backwards and should be redesigned immediately. The screen is poorly shaped, being very wide and narrow in height. As a result, the backup camera displays a very small image that only occupies a small portion of the screen. This is not up to the standard of a premium car. Even cheaper cars like Hyundai have superior backup cameras. The maps on the Navigation do not fill the screen, and Mazda foolishly deleted the touchscreen functions. This is a step backwards as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are designed to use touch screens. Mazda should have made the touch screen usable even while the car is moving. Mazda also needs to add more physical buttons either on the sides or bottom of the screen as this is a very user-friendly feature found on many other competing vehicles. It would be great if Mazda could introduce the 3 with the 2.5 turbo and the Skyactiv X as options. Additionally, Mazda should strive to make their vehicles with more interior and cargo room. This would help them rank higher in this category when compared to its competition. Lastly, it would be great if the 3 had ventilated seats, rear a/c ducts, and maybe a panoramic sunroof if it really wants to be considered premium.Maybe Mazda could improve the back-up camera with a software update that makes the camera image use the whole screen and adds trajectory lines. This could be a running change that would be included in the later produced 2019 Mazda 3 and given as a free update to buyers who already own a 2019.

Hey there! Just wanted to share our experience with the 2019 model year car. Unfortunately, we've had a few issues with it, including some transmission problems like grinding noise and burning smell. We've taken it to the dealership for service, but it's still not running smoothly. With only 5,960km on it, we're a bit disappointed. Just wanted to give you a heads up in case you were considering this model. Thanks for listening!
