The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.

The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.

Background

The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).

Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Common 1994 Gmc Safari problems

Acceleration Problems in 1994 GMC Safari

Many owners of the 1994 GMC Safari have reported acceleration issues, which can be frustrating and potentially dangerous. The most common complaint is that the vehicle lags when accelerating from 0 to 40 mph or more, requiring the driver to press the pedal repeatedly to maintain or increase speed.

Possible Causes and Solutions

  • Water Pump and Sensor: Some owners have suggested that a dirty sensor behind the water pump may cause acceleration issues. This sensor regulates all other sensors, and if it's dirty, it could lag acceleration. However, this may not be directly related to the water pump replacement. A thorough cleaning or replacement of the sensor may solve the problem.
  • Fuel System: Several components of the fuel system have been suggested as possible causes for acceleration problems. These include the fuel filter, fuel pressure, fuel pump, and catalytic converter. A fuel pressure test on both lines should be conducted to ensure proper pressure. If the pressure drops off when the engine is shut off, there may be an issue with the fuel pump or pressure regulator. An electronic EGR valve may also be dirty and require cleaning.
  • Oxygen Sensor: An O2 sensor issue could put the vehicle in a limp mode, causing a decrease in fuel mileage and a sluggish feel. A diagnostic with an OBD1 sensor may help identify any issues with the O2 sensor.
  • Throttle Body and Wiring: The throttle body or wiring may be faulty, causing acceleration issues. A thorough inspection and replacement of the throttle body or repair of damaged wiring may be necessary.
  • Idle Air Control Valve: A dirty or faulty idle air control valve could contribute to acceleration problems. Cleaning or replacing the valve may help resolve the issue.
  • Injectors: If all other components have been checked and found to be functioning properly, the injectors may be the culprit. A fuel pressure test and inspection of the injectors may be necessary.

Common Issues Based on Car Owner Complaints

The 1994 GMC Safari ranks 4th in reliability out of 15 GMC models, with 43 complaints made over 16 model years, mostly about engine issues. Other common complaints include instrument panel lights flickering and exterior lights being intermittent, rear doors not opening, transfer case lockup, heater not working, engine stalls while driving, rough idle when in gear, and electrical, HVAC, suspension, and brakes issues.

Conclusion

Acceleration problems in the 1994 GMC Safari can be caused by various issues, including sensors, fuel system components, throttle body, wiring, idle air control valve, and injectors. A thorough inspection and diagnosis of these components can help identify and resolve the issue. It is essential to address acceleration problems promptly to ensure safe and reliable vehicle operation.

  • Summary: THE VAN WAS GOING DOWN THE I25 NORTH OF DENVER WHEN THE LEFT FRONT TORSION BAR SNAPPED. I HAVE DRIVEN MANY RACE CARS AND BRINING THE VAN TO A STOP WAS THE HARDEST I HAVE EVER DONE. BY DRIVING SKILLS, LUCK AND THE GOOD LORD I AM HERE TODAY TO WRITE THIS COMPLAINT. DOES GENERAL MOTORS NEED TO WAIT FOR A FAMILY TO DIE BEFORE THEY WILL STEP UP TO THE PLATE. I DID NOT KNOW OF THIS PROBLEM UNTIL I WENT TO GET PARTS AND THAT IS WHEN I FIND THAT GM KNOWS THEY HAVE DEFECTIVE TORSION BARS AND SUPERSEDES THE PART NUMBERS TO SHORTER (FROM 40" TO 36" BARS) THESE BARS ARE REDESIGNED AND MUST BE REPLACED IN PAIRS. I HAVE THE VAN TORN DOWN NOW WITH THE FAILED PART AND IT UPSETS ME ENOUGH THAT I AM GOING TO LET THE VAN SIT UNTIL GENERAL MOTORS DOES SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-10-15
  • VIN: 1GDDM19ZXRB
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE 2 YEARS AGO. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, WE HAD A PROBLEM IN A MALL PARKING LOT WHEREIN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (DASH BOARD, POWER WINDOWS, A/C, RADIO) FAILED AT THE VERY SAME TIME AS THE TRANSMISSION, WHICH WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF 1ST GEAR. THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY AFTER WE TURNED THE CAR OFF AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES. IT HAPPENED ONLY TWO OTHER TIMES. RECENTLY, IT HAPPENED AGAIN, BUT IS NOT FIXED BY TURNING THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTING. IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED THAT IT IS A WIRING PROBLEM, BUT TO DATE, WE HAVE NOT FOUND ANYONE FAMILIAR WITH THE PROBLEM AND THEY ALL WANT TO REPLACE OUR TRANSMISSION. IT SEEMS ODD THAT THE TRANSMISSION AND ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS HAPPEN AT THE SAME TIME, SO ELECTRICAL SOUNDS MORE LIKELY TO US. THE VAN HAS BEEN SITTING IDLE FOR ALMOST 2 MONTHS NOW, AS WE ARE HESITANT TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY TO FIX IT AND EVEN MORE HESITANT TO TAKE IT TO SOMEONE WHO IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE PROBLEM AND JUST WANTS TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION WITHOUT GUARANTEE THAT THIS WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE HEARD OF THIS BEFORE AND, IF SO, WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.

  • Summary: RECALL COMPLAINT NHTSA RECALL NO. 03V159/GM RECALL NO. 03023.THE (ABOVE) RECALL IS CONCERNING THE FAILURE OF A WINDSHIELD WIPER SYSTEM THAT FAILS DUE TO A BAD CIRCUIT BOARD/MOTOR ASSEMBLY. THERE ARE MANY VEHICLES INVOLVED INCLUDING 1994 VEHICLES, BUT FOR THE GMC SAFARI ONLY 1995-1997 MODELS ARE LISTED. MY 1994 GMC SAFARI EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE MODE AS THE OTHER 1994 VEHICLES LISTED AND THE 1995-19997 SAFARI MODELS. THE SERVICE REPAIR RECEIPT INDICATES THE FAILURE MODE IN AGREEMENT WITH THE RECALL NOTICE DESCRIPTION. I HAD MY VEHICLE REPAIRED DUE TO NON-OPERATION OF MY WIPER SYSTEM AT A COST OF $341.75. WHEN THE RECALL NOTICE FOR THIS FAILURE MODE WAS ANNOUNCED IT DID NOT INCLUDE THE 1994 SAFARI MODEL YEAR. I HAVE HAD REPEATED CONVERSATIONS WITH GMC RECALL OFFICE AND THEY INDICATE THAT MY VEHICLE IS STILL NOT PART OF THE RECALL. UPON MY OWN INVESTIGATION, I FOUND A 1995 GMC SAFARI AND FOUND IT HAD THE SAME WIPER MOTOR ASSEMBLY AS MY (1994) VEHICLE, THIS VEHICLE IS COVERED FOR THE FAILURE RECALL, BUT MINE IS NOT. I INDICATED THIS TO GMC BUT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY CAN DO BUT ACCUMULATE COMPLAINTS ON OTHER VEHICLES NOT COVERED IN THE RECALL. I HAVE WAITED OVER 8 MONTHS SINCE THE RECALL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR AN UPDATE, BUT THEY INDICATED NO UPDATE WAS AVAILABLE. I BELIEVE NHTSA SHOULD INVESTIGATE ADDING THE 1994 GMC SAFARI TO THE RECALL COMPLAINT NOTICE NHTSA RECALL NO. 03V159/GM RECALL NO. 03023. PLEASE INDICATE WHAT FURTHER ACTION I CAN TAKE IN ORDER TO RECOVER MY EXPENSE ($341.75) IN REPAIRING THE SAME DEFECT WHICH HAS BEEN RECALLED ON OTHER SAFARI MODELS AND ON OTHER 1994 GENERAL MOTORS VEHICLES WITH THE SAME FAILURE MODE DESCRIPTION. • Summary: OUR 1994 GMC SAFARI ACCELERATED SUDDENLY TWICE WITHIN 2 HOURS. FIRST INCIDENT ON I40 NEAR BRINKLEY, AR WHILE MY WIFE WAS PASSING ANOTHER VEHICLE. SHE SWITCHED THE A/C FROM MAX TO NORMAL AND THE ACCELERATOR SUDDENLY WENT TO THE FLOOR. SHE STOPPED THE PROBLEM BY USING BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKES AND PUMPING 3 OR 4 TIMES TO PREVENT THE ACCELERATING VAN FROM HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF HER. THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH WAS OFF. THE SECOND TIME OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 35 TO 40 MPH. SHE TOUCHED NOTHING ON THE DASH OR THE TURN SIGNAL STALK. THE ACCELERATOR WENT TO THE FLOOR AGAIN AND IT TOOK SEVERAL PUMPS OF THE BRAKES TO STOP THE CAR. IT APPEARS TO BE CONNECTED TO THE CRUISE CONTROL SINCE PUMPING THE BRAKES STOPS THE ACCELERATION.*AK

Negative 1994 Gmc Safari car reviews

  1. Regan Schinner 2024-09-23

This van is amazing! It has over 202,000 miles and is still going strong, with no rust. It has been driven all over the place, from Canada to Florida, North Carolina to Connecticut, NYC to New Mexico, Kansas to Texas, and everywhere in between. Has it ever broken down? I don't think so! It's no wonder why GM sells more cars than Ford and DaimChrysBenz.

  2. Nicola Bruen 2024-08-08

We purchased the vehicle when it was only 14 months old and had 43000 miles on it. It held up well for about 18 months, but unfortunately, we have had a lot of issues with it since then. Despite being 10 years old, it has not rusted, which is a positive. However, we have had to replace two engines, two transmissions, two complete A/C systems (front and back), and have had to make numerous other costly repairs. In fact, about 6 months after we bought it, Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide listed this vehicle at the top of their list of VEHICLES TO AVOID - and they were right! By the way, the engine is quite difficult to work on. I hope this information helps.

  3. Chandler Quigley 2024-06-25

Generally nice - but: there was a secret GMC warranty on the paint which literally flake off after six years. GM denied responsibility claiming their secret warranty had expired and if the dealer didn't tell the customer (me) - too bad! The upshot - had to have the vehicle painted privately at my expense and now have EXTENSIVE RUST - something else that should never happen in this era of vehicle. Mechanically the vehicle has been fair, the rear A/C is a disaster - be sure to close off the coolant lines to the rear A/C - the rear A/C is not needed and you will otherwise have to add new freon EVERY Summer.

  4. Mohammad Nitzsche 2024-06-20

Hi there! I've been driving this vehicle for over 10 years now and I absolutely love it. It runs like a charm, but I have noticed some rust starting to form.

  5. Dashawn Keebler 2024-05-22

I have experienced several issues with this vehicle since its purchase. Unfortunately, it broke down during my vacation, causing inconvenience. Despite purchasing two separate warranties, I have spent over $1000.00 on repairs within six months. Regrettably, the warranties did not cover the necessary repairs. My experience with Mount Clemens Dodge has been unsatisfactory, and I would not recommend their services. I believe it is important to be honest about my experience to help others make informed decisions.

I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I'm so glad your fiance is okay after the recent car accident. It's amazing to hear that the van he was driving saved his life. It's clear that your fiance's family has a special connection to that van, and I'm happy to hear that you plan on getting another one. It's great to see such loyalty to a brand like GMC. Wishing you all the best!

  2. Dashawn Hansen 2024-04-12

My family has owned this vehicle since we bought it new in 1989. I recently took ownership when I got my driver's license and I must say, it's a great vehicle! It's powerful and perfect for passing on the freeway. What's more, it's incredibly reliable. With 91,000 miles on it, the only issue we've had is with the piece of plastic that holds the dimmer switch in place. It handles great and is even easier to park than my mom's Pontiac Bonneville. It has plenty of room for all my friends, and the seats are super comfortable. Plus, the air conditioning is ice cold! Overall, it's a fantastic vehicle that gives me absolutely no problems.

  3. Baron Hermann 2024-03-03

We've had our GMC Safari for seven years and we still love it! The van is spacious and comfortable, but the only downside is the limited space for passengers' feet in the front. On the plus side, we really appreciate the built-in coolers in the back.

  4. Jalon Nolan 2024-02-12

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it brand new and have put over 300,000 kms on it. It's amazing that it's still my daily driver in 2022! I make sure to get the oil changed every 5000km and the tranny oil every 3 years. The only major expense I've had was the front gear replacement and transfer case. Overall, I'm really happy with my car and would definitely recommend it!

  5. Seth Rowe 2024-01-10

I've had this car for 3 years now and I drive it 200 miles a day. Despite the cost of gas and maintenance, I've hardly had to put any money into it - just the occasional oil change and brake replacement. It was a fantastic purchase at only $1000 for 3 years of reliable service. Even with 250,000 miles on the clock, there isn't even a hint of an oil leak. I absolutely adore this car!
