1993 Ford Thunderbird problems
The Ford Thunderbird (colloquially called the T-Bird) is a personal luxury car manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company from model years 1955 to 2005 (with a 1997–2002 hiatus), across 11 generations. Introduced as a two-seat convertible, the Thunderbird was offered variously as a four-seat hardtop coupe, four-seat convertible, five-seat convertible and hardtop, four-door pillared hardtop sedan, six-passenger hardtop coupe, and five-passenger pillared coupe, with the final generation designed again as a two-seat convertible.
Ford targeted the two-seat Thunderbird as an upscale model, but the 1958 model year design introduced a rear seat and arguably marked the expansion of a market segment eventually known as personal luxury cars, positioned to emphasize comfort and convenience over handling and high-speed performance.
Overview
The Thunderbird entered production for the 1955 model year as a sporty two-seat convertible. Unlike the Chevrolet Corvette, it was not marketed as a sports car. Ford positioned the Thunderbird as an upscale model and it is credited in developing a new market segment, the personal luxury car. For 1958, the Thunderbird was redesigned with a second row of seats. Succeeding generations became larger until the line was downsized in 1977, again in 1980, and once again in 1983. Sales were good until the 1990s when large two-door coupes became unpopular. Thunderbird production ended in 1997, then briefly resumed as a two-passenger, marketed from 2002 to 2005.
From its introduction in 1955 to its final phaseout in 2005, Ford produced over 4.4 million Thunderbirds.

Great car! It sounds like you're having a lot of fun driving it. If you're worried about the cost of repairs, joining a local club like SCCoIA.org could be a great idea. They often offer group discounts and a wealth of knowledge from other owners.

I have no doubt that Ford used to make great cars, and this one is no exception. However, the brakes on this model seem to have a tendency to wear out quickly, with the rotors going out of round after only 15000-20000 miles.
-
My very first car, and I loved her! It had excellent slow speed handling and turning radius. It was quick off the line, but a bit slow to reach 60. It was a bit wobbly on the highway, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. Unfortunately, it did have the notorious head gasket failure at around 70k miles, but other than that, it only had minor sensor issues and a leaky radiator.
-
Hi there! I'm an auto technician and I really like this car. It's been good to me, although I did have to replace the head gaskets, but that's pretty normal wear and tear. The car runs great and it even pulls my boat with ease, so it can't be all bad. However, I did notice that the tail lights on the trunk lid with the T-bird symbol have non-replaceable bulbs. If one burns out, you can either find a working one at a junk yard or spend $220 at the dealership for a replacement.
-
It sounds like you have a great car that you really enjoy! You mentioned that it drives well and is much better than your old car. That's fantastic to hear!

I had a negative experience with these cars as they tend to blow headgaskets. I wish I had known about this issue before purchasing one. Unfortunately, the head gasket blew even before I had plates on it. The check engine light comes on randomly, but sometimes it can go months without any issues. Occasionally, while driving, it starts hesitating and the check engine light comes on, but then goes off again. After a few minutes, it works fine. However, sometimes it just stalls suddenly without any warning. It also takes water at random. In conclusion, I would advise against buying the 3.8L V6. However, I have heard and read that the V8 is okay.

I see you've travelled quite a distance, all the way from Canada to Florida! I can imagine that driving a rear-wheel drive car in the snow can be quite nerve-wracking. It sounds like you've had to replace a lot of parts in your car, but it's great to hear that you still like it. It's true that many domestic cars face similar issues.
Thaddeus Casper 2024-08-24
At 90,000 miles, I had to replace the heads at a Ford dealership, and unfortunately, I am still experiencing some issues. I have had to replace the switch twice now for my headlights, and I am once again having problems with the lights flickering and the brights not working. Despite these issues, my Bird is pretty dependable. I have driven it for 145,000 miles, and the body is still in great shape with no rust. It's also very comfortable and roomy, which I love.

I bought my car used with over 100k miles and really enjoyed it. It was a nice driving, nice looking car that I would have kept for many years, except the transmission went out. Unfortunately, the transmission industry was (or at least seemed) very corrupt. I called every transmission shop near my home just to get a worst-case scenario price on getting a transmission, but not one single shop would give me that price. They all had one single way of doing business, which was to pull out the transmission, take it apart, and then get me to agree to time and material to rebuild it. This basically meant writing them a blank check. I begged them to give me a number, even if it was just a hint, but they wouldn't budge. I could get a price on a rebuilt engine installed no problem, but not a transmission. It was frustrating! Maybe there are companies offering rebuilt guaranteed transmissions now, but not back then. I had a friend who was charged more than the entire Toyota mini-van was worth by a transmission shop. They got him to sign paperwork and start paying for parts until it was close to $20k, which was ridiculous. There was no way anyone was doing that to me.Hi there! When it comes to things like transmissions, unless a model has collector value, they can be a total crapshoot. It's important to keep in mind that there are some truly wonderful Porsche models out there that you may not be able to justify repairing if the transmission or motor fails, as either one can cost more than the car is worth.
Herman Goodwin 2024-01-23
I purchased my T-Bird from a friend, but unfortunately, it required some repairs. The front end needed new ball joints and control arms, which cost $700. Additionally, the brakes failed, and I had to spend $500 on a complete brake job. The car also needs a new alternator and tie rods, which will cost another $4-500. Despite these issues, the T-Bird is a reliable and sporty car. However, it's important to keep in mind that Fords can be expensive to maintain due to transmission and starter problems. With 127,000 miles on the clock, I've already had to fix a lot in the less than 6 months I've owned it. If you're considering buying a Ford, I recommend being selective and purchasing from a dealership.
