Common 1991 Porsche Carrera problems
The Porsche 964, also known as the Carrera 2 and Carrera 4, was a model of the Porsche 911 sports car manufactured and sold between 1989 and 1994.
One of the most common problems with the Porsche 964 was the failure of early versions of the dual-mass flywheel, which was added in 1990.
Another common problem with the Porsche 964 was the breakage of the tiny belt that maintained the tension of the dual-mass flywheel.
The Porsche 964 also had issues with the cylinder head gasket, particularly in the early models produced before 1991.
Another common source of leaks in the Porsche 964 was the pipes between the dry sump oil tank and the engine.
In addition to these mechanical issues, the Porsche 964 also had some problems with its electrical systems. Some owners reported issues with the car's air conditioning system, which could fail to cool the car's interior properly.
In summary, the Porsche 964, while a highly sought-after and capable sports car, had some common problems that affected its reliability and overall ownership experience. These problems included the failure of the dual-mass flywheel, breakage of the tensioner belt, oil leaks from the cylinder head and pipes between the dry sump oil tank and the engine, and issues with the car's electrical systems. While many of these problems could be addressed with proper maintenance and repair, they were still a source of frustration for some owners.
Are Porsche Carrera reliable?
Porsches are very reliable and do not break down easily – provided you adhere to regular maintenance and servicing, you will not spend much on repairs. Porsches use only premium parts, and for this reason, problems don't happen often. That being said, no car is perfect, and Porsches are no exception.
Are 90s Porsches reliable?
That depends on your definition. A 1990 car is almost 30 years old now. If you are used to modern japanese cars' reliability a 30 year old Porsche will disappoint you. If you are coming from a vintage sports car point of view, then yes, it'll be quite reliable.
What years did Porsche have engine problems?
The Porsche IMS bearing problem years are from 1997 to 2005, with the M96 or M97 engine in these models being particularly susceptible. The single-row bearing used from model year 2000 through 2005 is of the greatest concern. However, any IMS bearing can and will fail if not replaced as part of regular maintenance.
How long does a Carrera last?
Assuming the average driver clocks about 13,000 miles a year, this translates into at least 15 years of use. However, this isn't a hard and fast rule. With proper maintenance, it's common for models like the Cayenne and Porsche 911 Carrera GTS to clock over 250,000 miles.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-06-04
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: WP0AB2968MS
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET IN MY 1991 PORSCHE CARRERA 2 AT APPROXIMATELY 10-15 MPH WHEN THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG SPONTANEOUSLY DEPLOYED, SEVERELY BRUISING MY CHEST, HURTING MY NECK, AND BURNING MY LEGS WITH SOME SORT OF A BURNING CHEMICAL. I REPORTED IT TO PORSCHE WHO EVENTUALLY CAME AND GOT THE CAR, KEPT IT FOR 4-5 MONTHS, AND CLAIMED TO HAVE REPLACED SOME COMPONENTS OF THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THEY REFUSED TO SHARE WITH ME WHAT HAPPENED TO CAUSE THIS. THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO ME, AND IT WAS STORED ALL WINTER UNTIL MAY 2009 WHEN I BEGAN DRIVING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE INCIDENT. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 150 MILES LATER, THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND I CALLED PORSCHE WHO NOW REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING. I LIVE OVER 5 HOURS FROM THE NEAREST DEALER AND I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR TO THE DEALER TO BE LOOKED AT. I ALSO FEEL SINCE THEY SUPPOSEDLY REPLACED THE SYSTEM, THE WARNING LIGHT BEING ON IS RELATED TO WHATEVER THEY DID. I AM AFRAID THIS AIRBAG EXPLOSION IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO ME AGAIN- WHICH AT A HIGHER SPEED COULD PROVE FATAL OR AT LEAST VERY INJURIOUS. *TR
