2006 Suzuki Xl-7 problems

The Suzuki XL-7 (styled as XL7 for the second generation) is a mid-size SUV sold by Suzuki from 1998 to 2009, over two generations. Slotted above the Grand Vitara in Suzuki's lineup, the XL-7 offered three-row seating. XL-7 stands for "Xtra Large 7-seater".

First generation (XL-7; 1998)

The first-generation XL-7 was a Suzuki design, had a body-on-frame construction, and was essentially a stretched Grand Vitara. The North American version had a Suzuki-designed 2.5- or 2.7-liter V6 engine, on a rear-wheel drive-based platform with optional four-wheel drive. Beginning in 2003, European versions were also available with a 2.0-liter Peugeot turbodiesel engine producing 109 PS (80 kW).

A unique trait in the US market in this segment was that the XL-7 was available with a five-speed manual transmission, in both five- and seven-seat variants.

When introduced, the XL-7 was the least expensive SUV available with three-row seating in North America. It was awarded the Consumers Digest "Best Buy" award. However, sales slowed as the vehicle aged relative to the competition.

In Thailand, the Grand Vitara XL-7 was Imported by Siam International Corporation Co. Ltd. on 2002.

In Indonesia, the Grand Escudo XL-7 was launched on July 19, 2003, at the 12th Gaikindo Auto Expo.

Common 2006 Suzuki Xl-7 problems

The Suzuki XL-7, produced in 2006, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from car owners. Here are some of the issues and their details:

  • Revised Seal to Correct Leak at Right Front Axle: Some 2006 Suzuki XL-7 owners have reported leaks at the right front axle. This issue was addressed by Suzuki with a revised seal designed to correct the leak.
  • Valve Lifter Noise After Cold Start: Some owners have reported a ticking or clicking noise coming from the engine after a cold start. This noise is often caused by the valve lifters, which are components in the engine's valvetrain. The noise is typically more noticeable after the engine has been sitting for a long period and is most likely due to the lifters not receiving enough oil pressure during cold start conditions.
  • Ignition Switch Issues: Some owners have reported starting problems, which may be due to a faulty ignition switch. This issue can cause the engine to have difficulty turning over or not starting at all. A bad ignition switch can also cause electrical issues, such as the dashboard lights not working properly.
  • Fuel System Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the fuel system, including difficulty starting the engine and slow acceleration. These problems may be caused by a faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or issues with the fuel injectors.
  • Steering/Suspension Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the steering and suspension systems, including a knocking noise coming from the front suspension area and play in the steering wheel. These problems are often caused by worn out roll bar links or issues with the steering linkage.
  • Engine Management Warning Light: Some owners have reported seeing the engine management warning light on the dashboard. This light is typically caused by a faulty oxygen sensor, which can lead to increased fuel consumption and reduced engine performance.
  • Timing Chain Problems: Some owners have reported rattling noises coming from the engine, which may be caused by a problem with the timing chain. This issue is often caused by poor servicing, which can lead to the tensioners sticking and the timing chain becoming loose.
  • Rear Door Handle Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the rear door handles, including handles that do not work or are broken. These issues may require replacement of the rear door handles.

These issues are not exhaustive and may not apply to all 2006 Suzuki XL-7 vehicles. However, they are common problems reported by owners and should be considered when purchasing or maintaining a 2006 Suzuki XL-7.

What is the common problem with Suzuki XL-7?

Timing chain problem

If you can hear a rattling noise coming from the engine, then the most likely cause is a problem with the timing chain. The main cause of this problem is poor servicing, which results in the tensioners sticking. Does the video below sound anything like your issue?

Is a Suzuki XL-7 reliable?

In May 2009, Suzuki halted production of the XL7 indefinitely due to low demand. Through May 10, 2009, CAMI Automotive had only produced four XL7s for Suzuki after producing more than 12,000 units the previous year.

Negative 2006 Suzuki Xl-7 car reviews

  1. Agustin Haag 2025-05-28

I'm not completely satisfied with how quickly the gas seems to deplete in my XL-7. Additionally, I experienced some issues with my air conditioning less than a year after purchasing it, and my CD player is not functioning optimally at the moment. Although most of these issues are covered under warranty, it's still frustrating to have to deal with them so soon. When I first purchased the car, it served its purpose as I needed a vehicle that could seat seven people. However, now that I no longer require the extra space, I feel somewhat limited as the car's value has decreased significantly. Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful that I can find a solution that works for me.

  2. Colton Heidenreich 2025-05-09

In 2010, we were lucky enough to find a great deal on an '06 XL7 with only 37K miles. We were looking for a replacement for our '00 Honda Odyssey, but Toyotas and Hondas were too expensive, even with 100K miles. While the XL7 may not have the smoothest ride, with poor acceleration and gas mileage averaging 17 city and 20 highway, it has been incredibly reliable with no problems whatsoever at 72K miles. With our three kids aged 11, 8, and 7, we can still fit 1-2 of them in the fold-down 3rd row, and on long trips, we simply flip down one side of the 3rd row and pack plenty of luggage. However, it's important to note that the vehicle does not perform well in snow, and we regret not purchasing a 4x4. Overall, we miss our minivan, but the XL7 is the next best thing.

  3. Maximo Miller 2024-06-06

I purchased this car used with only 17,000 miles on it, and unfortunately, it has not lived up to my expectations. I have experienced a few issues with it, such as the cable to pop the hood breaking twice and a malfunctioning door ajar sensor that causes the interior lights to flash and ding when hitting bumps. Additionally, the gas mileage is not great for a compact SUV with a V6 engine and low horsepower. The tire inflation sensor has also malfunctioned. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that with proper maintenance, I can improve the car's performance.

  4. Joshuah Wuckert 2024-06-06

This SUV is a great choice if you're looking for a good deal. It offers plenty of interior flexibility, with rear seats that can be moved and folded down to create extra cargo space. In fact, it's the only small-medium size SUV that I could find with enough cargo room behind the second row seat to fit my two large dogs. While a minivan might be a better option, I needed 4WD, and unfortunately, the only minivan with AWD anymore is the Toyota Sienna, which was out of my budget. Overall, this SUV is a great choice for anyone looking for a versatile and affordable vehicle.

  5. Dimitri Ratke 2024-05-18

The vehicle is comfortable for driving, but it could use better gas mileage. While driving, it can be a bit too noisy. Additionally, the tire sensors tend to malfunction, especially on cold days. Unfortunately, the passenger door light is not working despite several attempts to repair it. The security screen in the rear is also constantly breaking. Finally, the braking system could use some improvement.

Positive 2006 Suzuki Xl-7 car reviews

  1. Garfield Stanton 2025-05-28

I really enjoy driving my 4WD Suzuki XL-7, especially after driving front wheel drive vehicles for the past 13 years. The vehicle comes equipped with everything I need and is a great package. The sound system is outstanding and I particularly love the heated leather seats. Compared to other mid-size SUVs, the XL-7 is considerably more affordable. While it may not have the same power as some of its competitors' 3.0 engines, it still takes me where I want to go comfortably and with all the luxury of a more expensive vehicle. I'm willing to forego the power for the luxury.

  2. Chesley Wiegand 2025-05-17

I love the Suzuki XL-7! It's so comfortable and spacious, making long drives a breeze. The left side foot rest is a great feature, and the on-dash controls make everything easy to use. While the third row may not be suitable for all adults, it's perfect for carrying up to 7 passengers. The XL-7's eye-catching style and body shape are matched by its equally exciting interior. I've found my XL-7 to be incredibly reliable and dependable, with adequate engine power for towing. The pearl finish is simply beautiful, and the interior has plenty of compartments with easy access - the rear hidden compartment is especially handy with its tray design. Overall, I can't wait to buy another Suzuki when the time comes to part with my current one!

  3. Jack Rippin 2025-05-04

I really like how it handles and the interior storage for five people. I was very happy with the space and comfort on long trips. The seats are firm, providing good support for the legs, seat and back on both short and long trips. I was also impressed with the braking in emergency conditions.

  4. Clifford Johnson 2025-04-22

Congratulations on your new Suzuki XL-7! It sounds like you made a great choice for your needs. Your research paid off and you found the best buy on the market. The XL-7 is big yet responsive and easy to park in the city, which is a great combination. It's impressive that it pulled your boat with plenty of power to spare. The fit and finish are also impressive and it compares well to your Honda in terms of quality and workmanship. It's wonderful to hear that the XL-7 surpassed your expectations. Enjoy your new SUV!

  5. Adan Skiles 2025-04-13

Your 2005 Suzuki XL-7 sounds like a fun ride! It handles city traffic well and has convenient door handles for easy entry. Although, it seems like the driver's seat may not be the most comfortable for long drives. Additionally, wind noise can be a bit of a distraction when driving over 65 MPH, which can make it difficult to enjoy the radio. The interior could also use some improvement, as it seems to have a lot of cheap plastic. However, the vehicle looks great and the engine runs fast, especially in cold weather. It's good to know that the engine noise is normal for all models. Overall, it sounds like a great car with some minor drawbacks.
