2018 Ram Promaster problems
Ram Trucks, stylized as RAM and formerly known as the Ram Truck Division (of Chrysler), is an American brand of light to mid-weight trucks and other commercial vehicles, and a division of Stellantis (previously Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). It was established in a spin-off from Dodge in 2010 using the name of the Ram pickup line of trucks. Ram Trucks' logo was originally used as Dodge's logo. Ram 1500 "Classic" trucks are made at the Warren Truck Plant in Warren, Michigan, United States, and at the Saltillo plant in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. New series Ram 1500 pickups are made at Sterling Heights Assembly in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Since its inception, the brand has used the slogan "Guts. Glory. Ram."
Background
Prior to the 1970s, Dodge had maintained a separate marque for trucks, Fargo Trucks, primarily for use outside the United States. After that point, all trucks made by Chrysler were distributed under the Dodge marque.
In June 2009, when Chrysler emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Fiat Group received a 20% stake in Chrysler Group LLC and Sergio Marchionne was appointed CEO, replacing CEO Robert Nardelli. On June 10 that year, substantially all of Chrysler's assets were sold to "New Chrysler," organized as Chrysler Group LLC. The federal government provided support for the deal with US$8 billion in financing at near 21%. Under CEO Marchionne, "World Class Manufacturing" or WCM, a system of thorough manufacturing quality, was introduced and several products re-launched with quality and luxury. The Ram, Jeep, Dodge, SRT and Chrysler divisions were separated to focus on their own identity and brands.
Ram Trucks was established as a division of Chrysler in 2010, as a spin-off from Dodge, and using the name of the Dodge Ram line of pickups that is now sold under the Ram banner. According to Chrysler, the Ram Trucks brand will concentrate on "real truck customers," rather than casual truck buyers who buy trucks for image or style.
The Fiat Ducato cargo van design has been adopted and is sold as the Ram ProMaster in North American markets, filling the gap created when Daimler ended production of the Dodge Sprinter in 2008. The goal was to increase truck sales "from today's 280,000 to 415,000 by 2014."
Executives at Chrysler have stated their intention to compete in the semi-trailer truck category with Ram, a possibility that is aided by Fiat's ownership of Iveco and an already available network of Dodge dealers. Ram trucks are marketed separately from Dodge cars; former Ram Division President Fred Diaz stated, "Ram trucks are not a Dodge model. Ram will always be 'vinned' (Vehicle Identification Number) as a Ram. We need to continue to market as Ram so Dodge can have a different brand identity: hip, cool, young, energetic. That will not fit the campaign for truck buyers. The two should have distinct themes."
On July 21, 2011, Fiat bought the Chrysler shares held by the U.S. Treasury, increasing its stake in the company.
In April 2013, Diaz left Ram Trucks to serve as vice president of Nissan's divisional sales and marketing. He was replaced by Reid Bigland.
Fiat Chrysler formed as a new corporate entity in January 2014.
In August 2014, Ram Trucks CEO Reid Bigland was tapped to lead the Alfa Romeo brand in North America. It was announced that the new head of the Ram Trucks brand would be longtime Chrysler employee Robert Hegbloom, who joined Chrysler in 1986 and had been a director for Dodge. In October 2018, Bigland was promoted to CEO of Ram Trucks. Shortly thereafter, he discovered that the division had been misreporting sales figures and turned over that information to the U.S. government for investigation. Allegedly, FCA cut his bonuses in retaliation, which resulted in Bigland filing a whistleblower lawsuit against FCA. In March 2020, Bigland announced his resignation.
Stellantis formed in 2021 when Fiat Chrysler merged with the French PSA Group.
The Ram brand logo features the head of a ram, formerly the logo used by Dodge.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-15
- VIN: 3C6URVJG4JE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: As of approximately around the 15th of April 2023, we realized suddenly that our lithium battery in our 2019 Winnebago Travato was not being replaced with charging from our Volta alternator from driving or from our solar as it has always done. The KISAE DC to DC charger and the Volta system show an error message that they were/are ‘overheated’. Testing of the DC to DC charger shows that it’s receiving far over the correct voltage. Upon diagnostics at a RV dealership they found the alternator is being overcharged. The alternator must be replaced before it can be determined why the alternator is overcharging (since obviously safeguards are meant to be in place to prevent this). We discovered through online research of the NHTSA Recall ID Number 21V793 on Boldt 2021-22 and Travato 2019-22 with Volta Power Systems; Manufacturer; Winnebago Industries, Inc. Subject; Wire Harness Built Incorrectly; loss of over-current protection can cause the wires to overheat, increasing the risk of a fire. There was also another subsequent recall for Winnebago Travato 2021, Winnebago Boldt 2021, and Storyteller Overland Vans 2021 of the seemingly same exact issue again, “In the case that power connections are not properly seated severe voltage spike by intermittent connections could damage the filtering diode in the the alternator control harness (10001447) resulting in the possibility of a shorted wire, on the same circuit the order of the fuse and diode were reversed. In the case that the diode is broken in a closed condition, the sense wire could be shorted to ground resulting in an overheated wire or broken wire. The identified cause of the diode failure was excessive overvoltage spikes. When the diode failed, it failed closed and with the diode and fuse being reversed the wire continued to heat up instead of breaking the fuse. With evidence from our van I believe in a strong probability the scope of the recall should be widened to include more units, such as ours. We are proof
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-10-15
- VIN: 3C6URVJG9JE
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Driver's side exterior mirror design flaw/failure. Safety of self and others at risk due to lack of visibility in checking for clear rear and lateral traffic. Mirror shakes uncontrollably and or is unable to be adjusted for proper viewing of rear and lateral traffic. Many warranty claims have been submitted through dealerships as well as various online complaints having been issued. No in-dash warning lamps or messages would appear for this type issue. This issue appears to be affecting driver's side mirror only and not passenger side. Symptoms of driver's side mirror failure do exist in various stages prior to overall failure. Considerable mirror shake and inability to keep mirror adjusted due to such shake. Problem has been ongoing with some reports having detailed up to 3 changes of driver's side mirrors by dealership for single vehicle.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-30
- VIN: 3C6TRVDG3JE
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: LT225/75R16 We started experiencing very noticeable vibrations when driving at highway speeds. We brought the van to our dealer for service and they responded "Please replace at least both rear tires. Right rear seems to have ruptured internally?" "Please replace that right rear tire asap." We had the tire removed and you can see the attached photo of the inside of the tire where something has obviously failed. These tires only had about 17,000 miles of use. I still have the bad tire.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-22
- VIN: 3C6URVJG7JE
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: -Vehicle shut off on highway, lost power steering Vehicle fan sounds like it's running full speed after turning off engine. Turning key off and pulling out did not shut off engine. Engine appeared to be overheating. Electric system was making lots of clicks and odd noises. Power steering pump went out in intersection. Police helped push van out of traffic.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-22
- VIN: 3C6URVJG1JE
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: During some cases of downhill driving, the Brake system warning light will come on. I believe this issue is tied to a combination of longer and steeper downhill drives when the angle indicated in road side sinage is no less than 6%. Minimal braking ton control the decent is used. Each time this occurs, I take the nearest off ramp to pull over to a stop and turn off the engine. My visual and hand-test of each wheel/tire temperature finds in my opinion, the temps to be quite nominal. On the last trip, a digital laser thermometer also indicated a good balance across the four wheels/tires, with no issues to be concerned with. Under the hood, the Master cylinder, ABS controller, Power Brake unit, brake fluid vessel and brake lines were all cool to the touch. Brake fluid in the vessel is clear and full. Each time the engine is restarted, the warning light is off and the drive can be continued with no further incident unless a similar long and relatively steep downhill is encountered. Time of day and outside temperature seem to not matter. Safety is compromised when I cannot trust that the warning light is, or is not indicating a real problem Reference RAM PROMASTER 3500, VIN [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-03
- VIN: 3C6TRVDG9JE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle Electronic throttle control had a malfunction and system went into limp mode on a highway at highway speeds of 70mph. The engine destroyed itself instead of limping. Lost power and almost got hit by a semi truck and other vehicles when this happened. Ended up getting a used engine due to current remanufacture costs etc. Total cost out of pocket because the dealership lied about my warranty and what was covered and for how long was around $7,000 parts lanor etc. Limp mode is dangerous and the way it happened on a highway could have gotten me or others seriously hurt or killed. Also now there is an electrical error code P0482 which is electronic coller fan issue other rams are having. All vehices in this series that have the recalled fan should be included the 2018 has issues but no recalls but has the same components of other recalls.. doesn't make sense.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-05
- VIN: 3C6TRVBG1JE
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The 2018 Ram Promaster 1500 appears to have a manufacture defect with the Engine Coolant Reservoir bottle. Based on my research and due to the lack of national shortage of the OEM coolant reservoir replacement (even after market are out of stock), the reservoir has a soft spot on the tank which allows coolant to leak. The leak appears to be in the same location/spot with my leak in conjunction with others who are experiencing this issue.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-13
- VIN: 3C6TRVCG8JE
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Rear emergency brake locked up only on the passenger side, causing the brakes to be ripped off the shoes and destroying the springs and hardware. This also caused the wheel bearing to lock up and it was destroyed as well. I could no longer spin the wheel freely.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-27
- VIN: 3C6TRVCG8JE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: My Ram Promaster van is NOT covered under the existing cooling fan recall but has the exact same problem! The dealership has seen the vehicle three times while it was under warranty and did not report that the drivers side cooling fan was not working! Now they tell me that the warranty has expired due to time. I took it to an independent shop for repairs. The cooling fans are made by Mahle in Spain. Part number LB498001 manufactured 2/2/2018 10:20 No. 0010481 Part number LB480002 manufactured 6/2/2018 16:48 No. 0010773. The independent shop told me that the fan was drawing too much voltage and melted the resistor. This is the same issue as the recall. How is it that my vehicle is excluded? In my opinion this recall needs to be expanded! https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2019/RCLRPT-19V818-3007.PDF https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2019/RCRIT-19V818-5515.pdf https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2019/RCRIT-19V818-4026.pdf
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-23
- VIN: 3c6urvjg5je
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: On June 18/19 Off Highway Van installed their 3 inch lift kit on my promaster 3500. Off Highway Van designs, manufactures and installs the lift kit. One July 23 the front right half axle (cv axle) broke or detached from the engine. The vehicle had been driven less than 2000 miles mostly highway with some city driving and 5 miles of gravel dirt road. The break happened when backing up to get back on the paved road after pulling off. Total vehicle miles is just under 18000. Safety was put at risk by the vehicle's drivetrain becoming no longer functional. I was also unable to get towed until about 4 pm the next day due. If the incident had happened while driving on the highway or at any speed it would have caused an accident. The vehicle has not been inspected. I took pictures of the damage and sent them to Off Highway Van for their evaluation. They claim their modifications did not cause the problem. I do not believe them. I think the traction control light might have come one when the cv axle broke. No other indicator was active. The vehicle was towed to my home and is still there untouched.

- Crash: 1
- VIN: 3C6TRVBGXJE
- Components: SEATS,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: THIS IS THE THIRD TIME THAT I HAVE SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT FOR THIS VAN. THERE ARE TWO VISIBILITY PROBLEMS THAT MAKE THIS TRUCK UNSAFE TO OPERATE ON THE HIGHWAYS. FIRST, THE WINDSHIELD DOES NOT EXTEND HIGH ENOUGH TO GIVE A FULL VIEW OF THE ROAD. IT IS PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT TO SEE OVERHEAD TRAFFIC LIGHTS. ONE OF MY EMPLOYEES HAD AN ACCIDENT ON JULY 7, 2018 DUE TO THIS VISIBILITY PROBLEM. IN ORDER TO SEE THE ROAD THE DRIVER MUST ASSUME A BENT OVER POSITION WHICH MAKES IS DIFFICULT TO RESPOND TO EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. THE POSITION ALSO CAUSES BACKACHES AND EXTREME DRIVER FATIGUE. THE DEALERSHIP TELLS ME TO JUST ADJUST THE SEAT LOWER. THERE IS NO ADJUSTMENT FOR THE SEAT ON MY MODEL. SECOND, THE VISIBILITY OUT THE DRIVER'S DOOR IS SEVERELY OBSTRUCTED BY A THICK DOOR PANEL AND IMPROPERLY DESIGNED REVIEW MIRROR. I BELIEVE THAT THIS VAN SHOULD BE RECALLED FROM U.S. ROADWAYS. IT IS SO BAD THAT I AM SELLING MINE AFTER A FEW MONTHS OF TAKING POSSESSION OF IT. I WISH THAT I HAD NOT WASTED MY MONEY ON THIS HAZARDOUS PRODUCT. EVEN THOUGH ITS TOO LATE TO HELP ME, PLEASE DO SOMETHING TO PROTECT OTHER OWNERS AND THE PERSONS THEY MAY INJURE.
