The Suzuki XL-7 (styled as XL7 for the second generation) is a mid-size SUV sold by Suzuki from 1998 to 2009, over two generations. Slotted above the Grand Vitara in Suzuki's lineup, the XL-7 offered three-row seating. XL-7 stands for "Xtra Large 7-seater".

First generation (XL-7; 1998)

The first-generation XL-7 was a Suzuki design, had a body-on-frame construction, and was essentially a stretched Grand Vitara. The North American version had a Suzuki-designed 2.5- or 2.7-liter V6 engine, on a rear-wheel drive-based platform with optional four-wheel drive. Beginning in 2003, European versions were also available with a 2.0-liter Peugeot turbodiesel engine producing 109 PS (80 kW).

A unique trait in the US market in this segment was that the XL-7 was available with a five-speed manual transmission, in both five- and seven-seat variants.

When introduced, the XL-7 was the least expensive SUV available with three-row seating in North America. It was awarded the Consumers Digest "Best Buy" award. However, sales slowed as the vehicle aged relative to the competition.

In Thailand, the Grand Vitara XL-7 was Imported by Siam International Corporation Co. Ltd. on 2002.

In Indonesia, the Grand Escudo XL-7 was launched on July 19, 2003, at the 12th Gaikindo Auto Expo.

Negative 2002 Suzuki Xl-7 car reviews

  1. Kendall Pouros 2024-11-03

The driver's cockpit can feel a bit cramped, and my leg rubs when driving. Additionally, if I push the seat back, there is not much leg room for passengers. It would be great if the car had better gas mileage, as it is currently only getting around 15 MPG. A low fuel light would also be a helpful addition, and smaller rear headrests would be appreciated. On the bright side, the car is definitely a good looker, and the leather interior is quite nice. The heated seats are a real treat, too. While the tire size could be improved, it's worth noting that the third seat is only suitable for very small children.

  2. Raheem Purdy 2024-08-11

This SUV offers great value for the money, especially with its third row seat which is more affordable than other SUVs. Although there have been issues with the water pump seal, the dealer has fixed it twice. The fuel efficiency is not impressive, averaging only 15-16 mpg, and the defroster is subpar. Additionally, the Dunlop tires have worn out quickly, with significant wear at only 20K miles. However, overall this SUV is a confident choice for those seeking a budget-friendly option with a third row seat.

  3. Maximus Purdy 2024-08-07

My Suzuki XL-7's air compressor pump/belt failed at 48,000 miles, costing $1,600 to replace. Despite living in Oregon and only using the A/C for 6 weeks of the year, I am confident that this was an unfortunate but isolated incident.

  4. Noe Volkman 2024-01-29

Overall, the XL-7 is not too bad, but the driver's seat area is too narrow. Additionally, the floor heat hardly works, which is not ideal for living in Central New York. Many people have complained about the access to the oil filter, but once you get the hang of it, it isn't as bad.

Positive 2002 Suzuki Xl-7 car reviews

  1. Ross Ebert 2025-04-17

I've owned two 2002 XL7s and they have been great for off-road travel in southern British Columbia. While they are not ideal for trail travel due to their long wheelbase, I was able to solve 90% of the breakover issues by lifting mine 2.5 inches and adding 215 85/16 tires. The full frame makes it easy to add a winch and the roof rack is sturdy enough for a 12 ft boat. I even have a raised cargo floor bunk in the back for sleeping, which provides ample space to stretch out. Overall, these trucks are comfortable, roomy, fuel efficient, and capable off-road with just a bit of lift. However, there are a few downsides to consider. Firstly, the automatic version comes with an aluminum front differential that tends to break easily. Secondly, the timing chain tensioner and plastic chain guides tend to go after 200,000 kms, but it's a job that can be done yourself with a few shortcuts and some YouTube tutorials. Thirdly, the catalytic converter under the body can get clogged with too much slow driving or bad fuel, but it can be easily fixed by taking it off and reaming it out with rebar rod. Lastly, they can be a bit tippy, especially when pushed, so it's important to be cautious when driving. Overall, I highly recommend the 2002 XL7 for off-road enthusiasts who are looking for a comfortable and capable vehicle.Drive safely and remember that accidents can happen in an instant. The modifications that improve off-road performance are definitely worth it. Overall, this is a great little truck. It's a shame that Suzuki is no longer available in North America and that the new Jimny is not yet available. I would buy one without hesitation.

You made an excellent choice with your XL-7 purchase! With 60,770 miles on it, it's clear that you got a great deal. It's wonderful to hear that you're enjoying your new vehicle, especially since you never thought you would like a utility vehicle. The XL-7 is a great choice for anyone who needs a 4X4, and it's fantastic that it has plenty of room and a third row seat for your grandchildren. Even your teenage daughter likes to drive it! It's a stylish and practical vehicle that I would highly recommend to anyone. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I've had my 2002 XL7 for almost a decade now, and I'm the second owner. Despite my lack of consistent maintenance, it's still running like a champ! I've gone through all the usual things like tires, brakes, batteries, windshield wipers, headlights, and oil changes, and I have very few complaints. The only downsides are that there isn't quite enough space for a rear-facing infant carrier, and I have a bit of an oil leak that causes me to lose about 2 quarts a month. Additionally, my fuel economy has dropped to an average of 13-15 mpg regardless of city or highway miles. However, everything else about this vehicle has been amazing! It handles more like a car, but after putting a tow hitch on myself (which was ridiculously super easy, by the way), I've been able to tow trailers and even drift boats without any issues. My XL7 handles well on both sand and even pebbly river banks (with a trailer even). It handles well in the snow and even ice, though I would suggest adding a few sandbags for extra weight when there is ice on the road for more than a day. It's a great height for transporting both kids and dogs as both can easily climb in and out on their own. There are child LATCHes which make it easy for child car-seats, booster-seats, and infant carriers to be snapped in and secured quickly. Overall, I have been thoroughly impressed and VERY PLEASED with my XL7. It's been a great ride, and I'm looking forward to many more miles!

  4. Noah Hane 2025-04-03

I am the third owner of this car. I had the pleasure of meeting the first and second owners. The first owner had owned it from new until a month or two before I bought it. She loved the car and even noticed it in our same hometown by the stickers on it. She stopped and told me how much she missed it, how dependable it was, and wished me the same enjoyment. I have been enjoying it ever since. She wanted something newer to drive. The second owner had not owned it for long and sold it to pay for some medical expenses for his kid, which is reasonable. I fell in love with the car as soon as I drove it and have had it for almost 2 years now. Although it has had some brake problems, sticks in gear sometimes (5spd), and dies occasionally, it just needs some maintenance to keep up when taxes come. The 4x4 works amazingly well. It is a great car and I would almost compare its quality to that of a Subaru. It had been a gift to right two kids in!!!!

I've had this SUV since 2003 and it has been the best car ever! In the 8 years that I've owned it, I have not had to make a single repair, other than replacing wear and tear items like brakes, wipers, bulbs, and oil changes. The 4WD is especially helpful during tough winters. The only downside is that it lacks the comfort and luxury of newer models. With 122K miles on it, I'm ready for something new, but I do wish that the newer models had more comfortable seats and came standard with more luxury items.
