1999 Suzuki Vitara problems
The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).
The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.
The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.
The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.
The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

Common 1999 Suzuki Vitara problems
The Suzuki Vitara, produced by the Japanese automaker, has been a popular model among drivers since its debut in 1988. However, some common problems have been reported by owners of the 1999 Suzuki Vitara, which include:
- Dropped Clutch: Some drivers have reported that the clutch on their Vitara has dropped, making it difficult to press down. This problem is often caused by a broken weld on the pedal pivot assembly. The only solution is to replace the entire clutch assembly with a new one.
- Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Problems: The Vitara's diesel particulate filter is known to become clogged up with soot due to the model's need for regular clean oil changes. This can result in the Check Engine Light illuminating, a loss in engine performance, and a decrease in fuel efficiency. Additionally, thicker and darker exhaust smoke coming from the exhaust pipe is a good indication of a clogged DPF.
- Faulty Switchgear and Controls: The JD Power customer satisfaction survey has highlighted some faulty switchgear and controls on the Vitara. Electrics were also a weak spot on the previous model, according to data from Warranty Direct. Therefore, it is recommended to check all switches and knobs for any faults.
- Rough Idle: A rough idle and stumbling when accelerating can be caused by an engine vacuum leak from the throttle-body base gasket. The only solution is to replace the failed gasket with a new one.
- Timing Chain Problems: Suzuki has announced recalls on affected Vitara models due to issues with the timing chain. The timing chain is responsible for synchronizing the engine's camshaft and crankshaft, and when it fails, it can cause the engine to misfire or stall. The affected model dates for this issue are from 07/02/2015 – 23/09/2016.
- Vehicle Emission Outputs: Another recall was issued due to incorrect vehicle emission outputs. This issue affects models manufactured between 07/01/2015 – 06/05/2015 and is caused by an error in programming during production.
- Radar Brake Support System: A recall was issued due to the Radar Brake Support System causing unintended vehicle braking whilst driving. This issue affects models manufactured between 22/09/2000 – 25/02/2004 and is caused by an error in programming during production.
- Risk of Fire: A recall was issued due to the risk of fire between cable connections and glow plugs. This issue affects models manufactured between 22/09/2000 – 25/02/2004 and is caused by a risk of electrical arcing between the cable connections and glow plugs.
- Fuel Pressure Regulator: A recall was issued due to the fuel pressure regulator freezing and causing leaking under extremely low temperatures. This issue affects models manufactured between 01/12/1997 – 31/01/1998 and is caused by the fuel pressure regulator not being able to handle extremely low temperatures.
- Driver's Side Airbag: A recall was issued due to the driver's side airbag deploying with greater force than originally designed. This issue affects models manufactured between 06/10/1998 – 05/10/2003 and is caused by a manufacturing defect in the airbag.
These common problems with the 1999 Suzuki Vitara can result in costly repairs, and it is essential to address them promptly to avoid further damage to the vehicle.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share with you my experience with my new car. I purchased it about 2 months ago and got a great deal on it. It only had 49000 k and the gas mileage is amazing, especially compared to my old 89 Oldsmobile. It's so much fun to drive! The manual transmission alone is a blast, but zipping around in this car makes it even better. I love to just open the sunroof and unzip the back window. It sits like a truck but drives sporty. Thanks for listening!
-
Great little truck for the price! It's been five years since I got mine, and it still runs great. Just follow the maintenance in the owner's manual. I have the model with the manual 5-speed transmission and the 2.0 motor. I've carried everything from bowling balls to kayaks and even my 6'4 spouse. The only negative is that some of the plastic pieces in the interior broke, but it's not a big deal. It's also great for long road trips, and the convertible top is easy to use.
-
This car may be small, but it has a sharp and stylish appearance, especially once you upgrade the wheels. It's our designated summer car and has a fun and enjoyable ride. Although it has a small motor, it's adequate with the stick transmission. I personally enjoy working on my own vehicles, and this car makes it easy with everything being accessible and in plain view. It's important to be cautious on the highway as it may roll if turned sharply, but it has good brakes and runs smoothly. We've had it for three years and doubt we'll ever get rid of it! If you plan on purchasing a newer model still under warranty, be aware that Suzuki does not honor expired warranties, even if they are only one mile over.

I had this vehicle for 19 months and unfortunately had to visit the service department 6 times during this period. The first time was due to an electrical problem that prevented the vehicle from shifting out of park. Although it took 3 visits to resolve the issue, I insisted that the Suzuki Tech Rep be contacted and the problem was eventually fixed. The other visits were for a front axle shaft, an engine seal, a defective windshield wiper switch, and engine tapping. The dealership suggested changing the oil and waiting for two changes with anything but a 'Fram' oil filter to address the tapping issue. They also suggested adjusting the valves, but at my expense, which I found concerning during the warranty period.
