The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sorento transitioned to a larger car-based platform which placed it into the mid-size crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe.

First generation (BL; 2002)

2002–2006

Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.

It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.

There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

Common 2006 Kia Sorento problems

The Kia Sorento, a mid-size crossover SUV, has been in production since 2003. While Kia has made significant improvements in the reliability of the Sorento over the years, some model years have had more issues than others. This article will focus on the 2006 Kia Sorento, which is among the model years with the most complaints from owners.

One common problem with the 2006 Kia Sorento is the failure of the crankshaft bolt, which can cause various issues, such as warning lights on the dashboard, starting problems, and even the crankshaft coming off.

Another common problem with the 2006 Kia Sorento is the automatic gearbox jumping out of gear, which is caused by an issue with the electric plugs underneath the box. This problem can be resolved by disconnecting the electric plugs underneath the box, cleaning them, and then re-greasing the plugs. Re-fitting the plugs should then sort the problem.

The 2006 Kia Sorento has also had issues with the rear door panel, which can be tricky to remove due to hidden screws and fasteners. To remove the rear door panel, one must find all the hidden screws and fasteners, remove them, and then gently pop each of the clips that secure the perimeter of the door panel to the actual door. Once all those clips have been freed, the door panel should lift clear of the groove at the bottom of the window.

In addition to these specific issues, the 2006 Kia Sorento has had problems with fuel injectors, particularly in models where the fuel filter is not replaced in a timely manner. Improper maintenance can affect the car's down problems, four-wheel drive system problems, engine problems, and the like. Service experts have noted instances of fuel injectors malfunctioning, especially in diesel models, due to a lack of proper maintenance

In conclusion, while the 2006 Kia Sorento has had its share of issues, many of these problems can be resolved with proper maintenance and timely replacement of parts. It is essential to check the service history of a used Sorento and ensure that it has been maintained properly to avoid potential problems down the line.

Negative 2006 Kia Sorento car reviews

  1. Jerrod Mitchell 2024-11-27

This Kia has had a multitude of issues, including electrical problems, brake and headlight malfunctions, and a check engine light that keeps coming on. Despite having only 67k miles, it has already been in the shop 21 times for repairs, including a new transmission, brakes replaced three times, u-joints, and a persistent vibration on the floorboard. Unfortunately, Kia has not taken responsibility for these issues and has not provided adequate support. As a result, I have retained an attorney to address this dangerous situation. I am confident in my decision to never purchase another Kia vehicle again.

  2. Emerson Jakubowski 2024-11-14

This vehicle has been back to the Kia dealership multiple times because it dies overnight in the garage or the driveway. Despite replacing sensors and being told the problem was fixed, it still persists. Have you considered consulting with a lawyer to see if you can use the 'lemon law' to return this vehicle?

  3. Kory Lesch 2024-11-07

The car drives fine, but unfortunately, it has many problems that make it difficult to enjoy. I purchased it new in 06, and since then, I've experienced a few issues. For example, when it's windy outside, there's an annoying LOUD whistle that comes from the windshield. Additionally, the CD player has already quit working, and the heater and dome light seem to have a mind of their own. Although the car does get me where I need to go, these 'little' things have ruined the experience for me. I'm looking forward to getting a different car!

  4. Robin McLaughlin 2024-10-10

The car experienced several issues during its lifetime, including a need for a new engine, clock running fast, frequent headlight replacements, and various other repairs. Despite a 10-year warranty, only the new engine was covered. Ultimately, the car was traded for a Honda CRV. However, it is important to note that these issues do not reflect on the driver's ability to maintain the car.

  5. Oral Fadel 2024-09-21

I researched my Kia thoroughly before making the decision to purchase it. While my Kia runs well, I have experienced some issues such as the wheels losing their paint. However, Kia promptly replaced them, although the new set is also losing their paint. Additionally, I had to pay for the repair of the gas cap door latch and the gas pedal that stuck. I have also had to replace 4 headlights, 1 turn signal, and 1 brake light at my own expense within 6 months. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my decision to purchase a Kia.

Positive 2006 Kia Sorento car reviews

  1. Alvah Beer 2024-11-22

I spent 3 months searching on Edmunds site for a mid-size SUV and finally narrowed my choices down to 3: the Toyota Highlander, CR-V, and the Kia Sorento. After careful consideration, I decided to go with the Sorento due to its affordable price, excellent safety rating, and superior build quality compared to the other two SUVs I researched. While it may use a little more gas due to its V-6 engine, it ultimately depends on how you drive. Overall, I highly recommend the Kia Sorento. I have been driving it for three months now and have not encountered any problems.

  2. Holden Nienow 2024-11-21

I'm so excited to share my experience with my Sorento! I bought it back in September 2006 and have been travelling a lot since then. It has been such a reliable car, with only one issue of needing to replace the transfer case (which I found for a great price on Ebay for $700). Other than that, I've only had to purchase tires, brakes, and oil changes. Even after all these years, it still handles just as well as it did on day one, and I can still tow my 4-wheeler to northern Maine (250 miles one way) without any problems. I can't imagine getting a replacement vehicle because there isn't a single squeak or rattle. If you don't mind the fuel economy not being great, I highly recommend buying a Sorento. It's definitely the best purchase I've ever made!

  3. Kaleigh Lesch 2024-11-13

It's great to hear about your positive experience with your Sorento! Even though you were initially worried about the quality since you had never owned a Kia or knew anyone who owned one, it's wonderful to hear that it has exceeded your expectations. With over 30k miles on it, it's impressive that you've never had a single problem, issue, or bug with it. It's great to know that it has performed well in all sorts of conditions, including snowy mountain, rural desert roads, and regular big city driving with constant breaking and fast accelerating. By getting the oil changed regularly and doing the recommended maintenance, you've taken great care of your Sorento. It's fantastic that it has required no trips to the dealer or shop. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  4. Leo Crist 2024-11-08

I love changing vehicles frequently, but the Kia is definitely a keeper! It's so smooth, comfortable, and stylish. Usually, when I buy a new vehicle, there's always something I don't like, but with the Kia, I can't find anything too bad that makes me want to get rid of it. This is definitely the best vehicle purchase I've ever made!

  5. Jeffrey Lesch 2024-10-16

I have owned my Sorento for 1 year and I absolutely love it! It has exceeded all of my expectations and I truly believe that it is the best SUV for the price. After doing extensive research and test driving many comparable SUVs, I am confident that I made the right choice. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone in the market for a midsize SUV.
