2017 Lincoln Mkz problems

The Lincoln MKZ, is a four-door, five-passenger mid-size luxury sedan manufactured by Ford and marketed as the Zephyr (MY 2006) and as the MKZ (MY 2007–2020) by Ford's Lincoln brand across two generations in both gasoline and hybrid gas/electric models.

Both generations of the MKZ were manufactured at Ford's Hermosillo Stamping & Assembly plant in Mexico. Production ended in 2020 to make way for new Ford vehicles.

First generation (2006–2012)

The 2006 Lincoln Zephyr was initially unveiled in concept form at the 2004 New York International Auto Show, previewing a new entry-level luxury sedan. The front featured Lincoln's signature waterfall grille and jeweled quad projector beam headlights (HID headlights were available). Chrome trim extends along the Zephyr's beltline while the car's rear fascia features LED taillights and dual chrome exhaust tips. All Zephyrs featured low-profile tires on 17x7.5-inch wheels with painted aluminum versions standard and chrome versions optional.

Lincoln officially revived the Zephyr name in the fall of 2005; the vehicles were based on the CD3 platform, which was derived from the Mazda 6. Lincoln had previously used the Zephyr name in the late 1930s for the smaller Lincoln-Zephyr line of mid-size vehicles. The "Zephyr" name had also previously been used by Mercury during the late 1970s and early 1980s, for several vehicles built on the Fox Platform.

The Zephyr's sole powertrain was a 3.0 L DOHC Duratec V6 mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission; identical to the V6 powertrain that was optional in the Fusion and Milan. The interior is largely unique to the Lincoln, along with different equipment packaging. The 2006 Zephyr started at a base MSRP of $28,995 USD, ranging up to $35,340 USD when fully optioned.

Though slightly smaller and front-wheel drive, the Zephyr was marketed as a replacement for Lincoln's previous entry level mid-size, the rear-wheel drive Lincoln LS. To facilitate a smooth transition, the Zephyr and LS were sold parallel to each other during the 2006 model year, the first model year of the Zephyr and the last for the LS. For 2007 the model was renamed MKZ, and took over the LS' market with sales beginning in September 2006. Lincoln's decision to resurrect the Zephyr name refers to the very early days of Lincoln before World War II. At that time, the only Lincoln manufactured was the Lincoln K-series which was a full-size sedan, and Lincoln, under the direction of Edsel Ford, Henry Ford's only son, hoped to introduce a smaller product to compete with the Packard One-Twenty, and the LaSalle, a smaller sibling offered at Cadillac dealerships.

The Zephyr featured a revised interior from the Fusion and Milan. The design featured shapes with real ebony or maple wood inserts (depending on desired trim) in metallic frames. These surfaces were contrasted with chrome-bezeled gauges, circular, chrome-finished vents and a metallic center stack where the radio and climate controls are housed. The Zephyr's steering wheel was leather-wrapped with real wood grips and satin-nickel audio, climate, and cruise control buttons. White LED backlighting was used for the Zephyr's controls and instrumentation. Leather seating surfaces were standard in all models.

Some of these standard features in the Zephyr included: cruise control, automatic headlights, fog lights, power door locks, "global" power windows (all windows can lower simultaneously at the push of a button), power adjustable and heated mirrors with puddle lamps, remote keyless entry, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel with redundant audio and climate controls, dual-zone automatic climate control, a universal garage door opener, 10-way power driver and front passenger seats, rear-seat reading lamps, and a six-speaker audio system with an AM/FM stereo radio and a six-disc, MP3-compatible CD changer. Optional in the Zephyr was a power moonroof, a DVD-based satellite navigation system, HID headlights, heated and cooled front seats, and an industry-first THX II-Certified audio system with a six-disc, MP3-compatible CD changer and ten speakers. Safety features included standard dual front-side airbags, front seat-deployed side airbags, and curtain airbags that extend from the front to rear seats.

Mechanically the Zephyr was closely related to the Fusion and Milan. As mentioned, all three cars were based on Ford's CD3 platform, which was in turn derived from the Mazda 6. Like these cars the Zephyr is natively front-wheel drive (FWD). The Zephyr uses a coil-over damper, short- and long-arm (SLA) front suspension with double-ball-joint control arms while the rear suspension is an independent multi-link design with lower control arms and a 17 mm (0.7 in) stabilizer bar. Spring rates, bushings, and dampers have been specially tuned for the Zephyr to provide excellent ride comfort without compromising handling. All Zephyrs feature standard four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with traction control. The sole engine offered in the Zephyr was an all-aluminum 3.0 L DOHC Duratec V6 producing 221 hp (165 kW) at 6250 rpm and 205 lb·ft (278 N·m) of torque at 4800 rpm. This engine was mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission and had a final drive ratio of 3.46:1. This powertrain was identical to the V6 powertrain available in the Fusion and Milan from 2006 to 2009. With this powertrain the Zephyr could accelerate from zero to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 7.5 seconds. The FWD Zephyr came with a 17.5 US gal (66 L; 15 imp gal) fuel tank and is rated to deliver 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) in city driving and 26 mpg‑US (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg‑imp) on the highway based on the revised 2008 EPA fuel efficiency measurement standards.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-13
  • VIN: 3LN6L5E94HR
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: 2017 Lincoln MKZ with 53k miles check engine light comes on and dealership diagnostic shows leaking coolant in cyl #2/needs motor. Car out of warranty so cost of repair is out of my pocket. Lincoln has known about this since 2016...they leased the car out in 2017 and then sold it to me in 2019 KNOWING there was a defective engine in the vehicle but didn't do or say anything about it...NEVER any recall. How is it that there are 100k 2021-2022 trucks and suv's being recalled due to engine issue that could "lead to catastrophic engine damage resulting in a loss of power". I could of suffered a loss of power as well with the defective engine that was in my car. How is this sudden recall on these trucks and suv's any more important or severe than all of the Ford/Lincoln vehicles that had engine issues? This could have been easily rectified early on seeing they knew about this issue from the beginning. I want my money back I paid to get my engine repaired.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-13
  • VIN: 3LN6L5E94HR
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I took my 2017 Lincoln MKZ vehicle into my local Lincoln dealership on the morning of 8/13 due to check engine light which came on the previous week. The results of the diagnostic test that was performed which showed P0303 coolant leaking in cylinder #2 needs motor per tsb 22-2229 at a cost $7103.60 plus tax. My 2017 MKZ with 53k miles needs a new motor…how is this??? This issue is a result of a “known” defect in the motors of certain Lincoln and Ford vehicles where coolant seeping into the engine. I call the Lincoln Care/Customer Relations Center department to advise of my situation and the representative I spoke took my information Vin #, address, phone number and said she would call me back once she has looked in what resources or programs available that could possibly assist me with this very expensive repair. She calls me back and advises that because my vehicle is out of the warranty period there is no assistance or resources available to assist me. Now, if my vehicle was still under warranty I would be covered and I wouldn’t need assistance because it would be a covered repair. So, if this is the Lincoln Care /Customer Relations Center that “supposedly” have resources to assist customers in situations such as this, who are you assisting??? not the customer under warranty because they don’t need the assistance and obviously not the customer (myself) that need the assistance but can't get any. I have a long history with this company and I have invested a lot of money with this company to be told there is no assistance for a “known” defect issue which has now become my issue. Unbelievable that you all are treating customers in this manner. I will never support this company ever again after being a repeat customer and getting treated this way. I can only hope all of the other vehicle owners with this “known” defect that are having to pay for the repair does the same. I want my money back that I now have to pay out to get my vehicle repaired.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10
  • VIN: 3LN6L5FC7HR
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was driving from my house to work and got about a mile and a half when all of a sudden the panoramic sunroof exploded around the edges. Nothing in the middle of the sunroof was broken. Nothing hit the sunroof…it just shattered. I got it back to my house and had it towed to the dealership. They told me that there was no way nothing didn’t hit the sunroof. Calling me a liar. I was in the car driving to work. Not going any faster than 40-45 mph on an outer road. Nothing above me…no overpass nothing. And it just happened. Scared me because at first I had no idea what the heck happened. Even the guy who towed my car to dealership told me he had never seen that before. The guy in the service department said the same thing. Something caused my sunroof to shatter and it wasn’t because it was hit by something.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-06
  • VIN: 3LN6L5MU8HR
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The vehicle transmission shift is controlled by buttons to the right of the dashboard. The letters identify Power on/off, R, Dr., etc.. The identifying imprints for each shift within a short time are erased, making it impossible to readily identify and engage in the appropriate gear or command. This poses a hazard when approaching a difficult traffic situation, when parking, or a safety issue when the power button is mistakenly turned off, when the reverse button is pressed when you are expecting to engage into Drive. It's also important to note that the vehicle safety break is engaged through the transmission posing another safety issue.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-17
  • VIN: 3LN6L5A99HR
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: In February of 2024, my check engine light came on. I took it to a dealership who informed that it was a spark plug issue and that they had replaced it. The check engine light came on again fairly soon after, and before I could get it back to the dealership the car died. I had it towed there and was told that the battery needed to be replaced. The day after I got my car back, the light came back on again. After taking it back to the dealership, it was determined to be an engine issue, with coolant leaking everywhere (which is what ruined the spark plug and battery.) The estimate to fix this issue is $6,550.00. My Lincoln MKZ has approximately 60,000 miles and one owner who took care of the maintenance religiously - this should not be happening.

ENGINE,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
  • VIN: 3LN6L5E94HR
  • Components: ENGINE,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: While out of town, the check engine light came on and the car began sputtering. There was a Lincoln dealer a couple miles away so I went there. The scan found code p303 and coolant had intruded in cylinder 3 and the engine needed to be replaced. The Lincoln dealer stated that there was a service bulletin issued about this problem with eco boost 2017 Lincolns.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-22
  • VIN: 3LN6L5FC4HR
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The 2017 MKZ has an oil leak. I was informed during a recent state inspection and oil changed. When I left to take the car in, I noticed about a fist size spot of oil on the garage floor. When I received the call from the dealership, my MKZ was serviced. The oil leak was from the oil pan. I was also, informed it required TSB. Explained by the Ford Team Leader, it did not only need a new gasket. The service for the oil leak required the following; New oil pan, new valve covers, new gaskets, etc. Lincoln has designed a NEW pan, valve cover, gaskets which should eliminate the oil pan leak. The total repair cost went into approximately 4 TIMES the cost for a normal oil pan gasket replacement. In researching, it appears Lincoln has known of the potential problem since 2015 and I purchase this as a new used. When I purchased the car, it was a bought back and I was told all issues were repaired, but it appears if this was an issue in 2015 and Lincoln has designed new parts, why was the oil pan and covers not replaced, if this engine has a known history of oil leaking. There not a recall or some type of resolution for the repair after any warranty issues. This is a design and manufacturing fault and negligence on Lincoln. Now this extreme high-cost repair is placed on the consumer to fix Lincoln's known engine design issue to eliminate the oil leak. Either a recall should have been called or the repair should not be fully on the owner. Now I am beginning to smell oil after just short drives around town.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-22
  • VIN: 3LN6L5F98HR
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Coolant leaked into cylinders causing my engine to regularly overheat, forcing me to replace the engine at about 78,000 miles. Although I didn't realize it at the time, the first indication of a problem was at 72,737 miles (just 2,737 miles out of warranty), which is when I had the first overheating incident. According to my research, Ford has known about this problem for many years, and it affects many models over many model years, but they have yet to address the problem with the public. I was fortunate in that I didn't have a fire or an accident due to this known problem. Ford has issued several Technical Service Bulletins about it, the most recently being 22-2229, which is attached. Lincoln assisted me with covering the engine replacement, but in total, I am out $3,864.80 due to this problem.

Negative 2017 Lincoln Mkz car reviews

  1. Grayce Bradtke 2024-09-23

To be honest, I was comparing this car to some tough competition, including the Mercedes E350, Cadillac CTS4, Audi A6 and a BMW 5 series. While each of these cars performed well in my subjective testing of 15-30 minute test drives, the Lincoln unfortunately fell short in every category. The interior materials felt cheap and the sound system, which was supposed to be top-of-the-line, was disappointing. The car also experienced significant squat upon moderate braking and had confidence-uninspiring body roll in curves. The steering felt over-boosted and the road noise was quite significant, although this could be due to the tires. Despite my initial hopes for this car, I ultimately couldn't recommend it, even at its lower price point compared to the competition. There are simply too many other options in this price range that offer a more engaging driving experience.

The car has been experiencing a myriad of issues such as rattles, knocks, sluggish performance, and electrical problems. Unfortunately, the dealer has not been able to provide a satisfactory solution, and their response has been less than helpful. Despite this, we remain confident in our decision to purchase a Lincoln vehicle in the past and will continue to do so in the future.

Hi there! I wanted to ask about the leather seat issues. We noticed a hole in the driver's seat that has turned up and we were told that it was our fault. We strongly disagree with this and would appreciate your help in resolving this issue. Thank you!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 MKZ. Unfortunately, I've noticed some blisters and chipping paint on the hood. It seems like there might not have been any primer applied before painting, which has resulted in this issue. I've reached out to Lincoln about it, but unfortunately they have not taken responsibility for their work. It's disappointing to hear that they have known about this defect for years. Thank you for listening to my experience!

Positive 2017 Lincoln Mkz car reviews

I just hit 1500 miles on my brand new leased 2017 Lincoln MKZ and I have to say, everything about this car is fantastic! Although my last 5 cars were all Lexus ES 350's, the dealer let me take a MKZ I liked for the 4th of July weekend and the day I returned it, I knew it had to be mine. The technology on this car is overwhelming, the comfort is exactly what I've always wanted in a car, and the looks are turning heads and getting compliments from everyone. I feel truly secure in this car from all perspectives. While my Lexuses were great cars, Lincoln really outdid themselves with the MKZ this time around. Best regards, Mr. Bill

Wow, you get more features than you might expect!

I'm really enjoying getting 40MPG and still being able to drive a true luxury car! I get a lot of looks and questions, all positive! I have the White Platinum paint with the all dark glass roof and the upgraded pocket wheels. It looks very hot! I love all the luxury features and appointments. The massaging seats are really cool and nice on long drives. The downsides are that the voice recognition doesn't recognize about half of my address book, which is very frustrating when driving. I wish that worked better. Also, the sound system is just 'OK'. I expected to be 'wowed' by a great sound system, but it's not quite there. Our other car is a Kia Soul, and its sound system is much better! That said, we're very happy with our MKZ overall and feel it's a sharp, well-built machine. It's also very good value for all you get. We hope Lincoln will improve on the few shortfalls mentioned, as we feel we would most likely buy another MKZ in the future! A little more head and leg room would be nice too. If Lincoln made the Continental in a Hybrid, I would buy one!

I really enjoyed the styling of the MKZ, but unfortunately, the dealer was not in a convenient location for me. As a result, I decided to go with the 2017 Fusion Platinum, which was listed at $41,200. Although it may not have the same prestigious body as the MKZ, I found that the pluses and minuses were identical. I have now been the proud owner of this car for three years, and I am happy to report that the window bounceback issue was fixed quickly and I have not experienced any other issues. The parking assist is a lifesaver for me, as an older driver with neck problems, and it consistently gets me within about 6 inches from the curb every time. Additionally, the AWD with 19 inch low profile tires holds slippery roads perfectly, and the adaptive cruise control is a great safety feature. The plush leather interior with walnut trim is also a nice touch. Although the Fusion Platinum's biggest engine is the standard 2.0 turbo, I still find it to be a great car. I can only imagine how nice the 400 HP must be!

  5. Oliver Mante 2024-10-17

Comfortable ride, distinctive styling, and new technology. The best thing I like about the car is that it gives you a sense of control. Even on rough roads or fast lanes, the car provides an outstanding feeling of being in control. It is very well balanced and state of the art.
