The Suzuki Swift (Japanese: スズキ・スイフト, Suzuki Suifuto) is a supermini car (B-segment) produced by Suzuki. The vehicle is classified as a B-segment marque in the European single market, a segment referred to as a supermini in the British Isles. Prior to this, the "Swift" nameplate had been applied to the rebadged Suzuki Cultus in numerous export markets since 1985 and for the Japanese-market Suzuki Ignis since 2000. The Swift became its own model in 2004. Currently, the Swift is positioned between Ignis and Baleno in Suzuki's global hatchback lineup.

Predecessors

International (1985–2003)

The Suzuki Swift nameplate began in 1985 as an export name for the Suzuki Cultus, a supermini (or subcompact) manufactured and marketed worldwide since 1983 across three generations and four body configurations—three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, five-door hatchback and two-door convertible—and using the Suzuki G engine family. The third generation was only sold in North America; the second generation remained in production for other markets across the world.

The Swift was marketed in the Japanese street domestic market (JDM) as the Cultus and elsewhere as the Suzuki SA310, Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Forsa, Chevrolet Swift, Chevrolet Sprint and Sprint Metro, Geo and Chevrolet Metro, Pontiac Firefly, Maruti 1000, Holden Barina and Subaru Justy. Versions of the second generation Cultus were also produced until 2007 in India and the car remained in production until 2016 in Pakistan and China.

Common Suzuki Swift 1998 problems

The Suzuki Swift 1998 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to engine and transmission issues, as well as electrical problems.

Engine problems are a significant concern for the Suzuki Swift 1998. The engine may experience rough running, stalling, and excessive fuel consumption, which can be caused by faulty sensors or a damaged torque converter.

Transmission problems are also common in the Suzuki Swift 1998, particularly with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system. The CVT system is a complex piece of machinery that relies on physical parts like bands and pulleys, as well as hydraulic bits and pieces, to function properly. If the CVT system is not working correctly, it can cause the vehicle to slow down and lose its ability to accelerate, which is a significant safety concern.

Electrical problems are another common issue in the Suzuki Swift 1998. The vehicle's Bluetooth connectivity may not work correctly, requiring the driver to follow specific instructions to connect their mobile phone to the car's media-control panel. Additionally, the vehicle's sensors and computer systems may not function correctly, causing various issues with the engine and transmission.

In summary, the Suzuki Swift 1998 has several common problems related to engine, transmission, and electrical issues. These problems can cause significant safety concerns and require careful diagnosis and repair by a qualified mechanic.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it as a second owner with 130,000 miles on it and it has been a very reliable car. It has never stranded me, which is great! Unfortunately, these cars tend to rust out near the A-arm and under the doors midway. I now have 225,000 miles on the motor and have replaced the usual stuff like brakes, bearings, and cv-shafts. I have a 5-speed and I'm not sure an automatic would be able to get out of its way! I've noticed a slight decrease in speed, from 44 to 40 mph, over the last 15,000 miles, but she's still going strong. I'll keep driving her until her frame goes, which will be soon. I changed the oil regularly and used slick 50. I didn't race the car, I drove her for economy. Thanks for listening!

This is a great little car! I drove it from Florida to Virginia with no problems. The fuel economy is great. While the transmission can be noisy, the car could use power mirrors and an automatic cut-off switch for the rear defroster. However, my main complaint is with the A/C. Since purchasing this car, I have had to replace the compressor twice.

Congratulations on considering the 1997 Suzuki as your next car! I have owned this car for a long time and it has been a great investment. With over 700,000 kilometers on my previous car, I decided to purchase this brand new Suzuki and it has not disappointed. I always use synthetic oil in the engine and have only had to replace the water pump and radiator. This car has been very reliable and has held up well in the Canadian climate. If you are looking for a basic, easy to maintain, and dependable car, then the 1997 Suzuki is definitely worth considering.

Hi there! I wanted to share some information about my car. It's a 1995 Suzuki Swift HB in a lovely purple color. It's a 5-speed with a 4-cylinder 1.3L SOHC 8-valve engine that produces 70 horsepower and 74 torque. I personally don't find it underpowered for its size. It handles pretty well, but I'm looking to tighten it up with a strut brace. Thanks for listening!

I bought this car because I needed affordable transportation. I was thrilled with how well it was built, even though it already had 67000 miles on it. It drove great and everything under the hood looked like new. The gas mileage was unbelievable, at about 40mpg. I have been driving a Honda since I sold this car, but only because they don't sell these anymore. I would definitely buy this car again, as it was the best car I've ever owned. I felt it handled better on the road than a Honda Civic, and I could easily park it in very small spaces where others had to look for another spot. And let's not forget the great cargo capacity once you lower the back seat. It was excellent for highway driving too.

I have the 5 speed and it's amazing! I bought it for the fuel savings and I couldn't be more pleased. It does get a few looks and some funny comments, but when I tell people it gets 50 mpg, they all want to know where they can get one.
