The Suzuki Swift (Japanese: スズキ・スイフト, Suzuki Suifuto) is a supermini car (B-segment) produced by Suzuki. The vehicle is classified as a B-segment marque in the European single market, a segment referred to as a supermini in the British Isles. Prior to this, the "Swift" nameplate had been applied to the rebadged Suzuki Cultus in numerous export markets since 1985 and for the Japanese-market Suzuki Ignis since 2000. The Swift became its own model in 2004. Currently, the Swift is positioned between Ignis and Baleno in Suzuki's global hatchback lineup.

Predecessors

International (1985–2003)

The Suzuki Swift nameplate began in 1985 as an export name for the Suzuki Cultus, a supermini (or subcompact) manufactured and marketed worldwide since 1983 across three generations and four body configurations—three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, five-door hatchback and two-door convertible—and using the Suzuki G engine family. The third generation was only sold in North America; the second generation remained in production for other markets across the world.

The Swift was marketed in the Japanese street domestic market (JDM) as the Cultus and elsewhere as the Suzuki SA310, Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Forsa, Chevrolet Swift, Chevrolet Sprint and Sprint Metro, Geo and Chevrolet Metro, Pontiac Firefly, Maruti 1000, Holden Barina and Subaru Justy. Versions of the second generation Cultus were also produced until 2007 in India and the car remained in production until 2016 in Pakistan and China.

Common 2000 Suzuki Swift problems

The Suzuki Swift, first launched in 2004, has been a popular car with drivers, but some common problems have been reported by owners. These issues can affect the car's performance, safety, and reliability, and in some cases, may require costly repairs.

  • Handbrake problems: There is also a reported problem with the handbrake on the Suzuki Swift. Drivers have reported an issue with the model whereby the handbrake is susceptible to failure. This problem can affect the car's safety, especially when parking on an incline. It's important to get this problem fixed as soon as possible to prevent any potential accidents.
  • Clutch slipping: Some drivers have reported a problem with the clutch slipping on the Suzuki Swift. This issue can cause symptoms such as the clutch juddering whilst driving, difficulty changing gears, and a burning smell when revving the engine. If you've noticed any of these symptoms, it's likely that your car is suffering from clutch failure, which may mean that you need a clutch replacement. The average quote for a clutch replacement on the Suzuki Swift is £530.18 when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar.
  • Engine stop start system failure: Some drivers have reported that the engine stop start system may stop working, leading to the battery not being charged and running flat. This problem can affect the car's performance and reliability, and may require costly repairs.
  • Brake line and support problems: Some drivers have reported that the brake lines and support on which the motor is mounted may come into contact, which could cause a loss in braking performance. This problem can affect the car's safety, especially when driving at high speeds or in emergency situations. It's important to get this problem fixed as soon as possible to prevent any potential accidents.
  • Front seat heater problems: Some drivers have reported that the front seat heater could deteriorate and move, which could lead to the seat heating up excessively and causing a fire. This problem can affect the car's safety, especially when driving in cold weather. It's important to get this problem fixed as soon as possible to prevent any potential accidents.

In general, the Suzuki Swift is a reliable car, with very few common problems affecting the model. However, it's important to be aware of these common problems and to get them fixed as soon as possible to prevent any potential accidents or costly repairs. If you're experiencing any of these problems, it's recommended that you take your car to a qualified mechanic for inspection and repair.

What is the common problem of Suzuki Swift?

Clutch slipping

The clutch is known for being very light on the Swift. If you are having problems with the car not accelerating smoothly, but having delays and then surging forward, this is a clear indication of a failing clutch.

What are the disadvantages of Suzuki Swift?

Disadvantages of owning a Swift ZXI:

  • No Rear View Camera.
  • No Diamond Cut Alloy Wheels.
  • No Auto Dimming IRVM (Not present in top model ZXI+ too)
  • Less interior space (all variants)
  • Only 2 Front Airbags.
  • And last of all but should be the top one - Disastrous Global NCAP Safety Rating of 1 star each for Adult and Child Safety.

What is the most common problem with Suzuki?

Poor fuel efficiency, rough idling, hesitancy when accelerating, and even engine misfires have all been noted by owners. This issue often results from an air/fuel sensor that needs to be fixed. This sensor measures the air-to-fuel ratio during engine combustion.

How many kms can a Swift last?

If you do regular scheduled services with good oil and filter changes and not wait until a small problem escalates to a bigger one, then you can drive the Swift for over 2 lac kms.

Negative 2000 Suzuki Swift car reviews

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car - a red 2000 model that I bought back in April. I find that it costs me an average of $25 to fill up once a week, which is pretty reasonable considering I stay in town. The highway mileage is excellent too! I did have to replace the battery and tires recently, and unfortunately, my catalytic converter is going out. But overall, I'm still really happy with my purchase!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it as a second owner with 130,000 miles on it and it has been a very reliable car. It has never stranded me, which is great! Unfortunately, these cars tend to rust out near the A-arm and under the doors midway. I now have 225,000 miles on the motor and have replaced the usual stuff like brakes, bearings, and cv-shafts. I have a 5-speed and I'm not sure an automatic would be able to get out of its way! I've noticed a slight decrease in speed, from 44 to 40 mph, over the last 15,000 miles, but she's still going strong. I'll keep driving her until her frame goes, which will be soon. I changed the oil regularly and used slick 50. I didn't race the car, I drove her for economy. Thanks for listening!

I bought my car back in 2007 when gas prices were skyrocketing and I needed to get rid of my 16 mpg pickup. It was a great decision! My car gets an impressive 38 mpg and is perfect for when I don't need to haul anything large. As someone who spends a lot of time on the road (I drove 18,695 miles last year!), I appreciate that my annual maintenance costs are below $200. Performing maintenance on this car is a breeze, too. It's easy to drive and maneuvers well in tight parking lots. Despite its small size, the car has no problem accelerating on freeway on-ramps. I would highly recommend this car to anyone looking to save money on commuting and around town costs. The only downside is that some drivers feel the need to pass me because of its size...

This car has had several issues, including a factory defect that required the engine to be rebuilt. However, I ensured that the issue was resolved and the car is now in good condition.

  5. Benton Baumbach 2024-03-05

This is a great little car! I drove it from Florida to Virginia with no problems. The fuel economy is great. While the transmission can be noisy, the car could use power mirrors and an automatic cut-off switch for the rear defroster. However, my main complaint is with the A/C. Since purchasing this car, I have had to replace the compressor twice.

Positive 2000 Suzuki Swift car reviews

  1. Thad Herman 2024-11-25

I bought this car as a backup vehicle in 2004 and was pleasantly surprised by how well it performs! It has great gas mileage and is fun to drive. Even after 12 years and 38k miles, it still drives like new! I was also impressed by how well it handles in the snow - it drives just like a 4WD vehicle because all the weight is in the front. The only downsides are that Suzuki made these cars with 'power-assisted' steering rather than power steering (so you have to put your shoulder into it), and when you open the driver's window, you break the vacuum seal and will feel air coming in through the floor speaker grill. However, I feel safe letting my teen use this as her first car next year.

  2. Brycen Hansen 2024-11-10

This car is fantastic! It runs really well in the snow and has amazing gas mileage. I would definitely buy another one, although they can be hard to find.

  3. Anibal D'Amore 2024-10-14

I have to say, the Suzuki Swift and Chevy Metro are both fantastic cars that come in at under 10K, and their gas mileage is superior. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on which one is better - Suzuki Swift or Chevy Metro? One thing to keep in mind is that imports tend to last longer. I think people should consider buying these types of cars, as they are less polluting.

  4. Mohamed Adams 2024-08-15

I bought this car because I needed affordable transportation. I was thrilled with how well it was built, even though it already had 67000 miles on it. It drove great and everything under the hood looked like new. The gas mileage was unbelievable, at about 40mpg. I have been driving a Honda since I sold this car, but only because they don't sell these anymore. I would definitely buy this car again, as it was the best car I've ever owned. I felt it handled better on the road than a Honda Civic, and I could easily park it in very small spaces where others had to look for another spot. And let's not forget the great cargo capacity once you lower the back seat. It was excellent for highway driving too.

Congratulations on considering the 1997 Suzuki as your next car! I have owned this car for a long time and it has been a great investment. With over 700,000 kilometers on my previous car, I decided to purchase this brand new Suzuki and it has not disappointed. I always use synthetic oil in the engine and have only had to replace the water pump and radiator. This car has been very reliable and has held up well in the Canadian climate. If you are looking for a basic, easy to maintain, and dependable car, then the 1997 Suzuki is definitely worth considering.
