The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automaker Subaru for two different SUV-themed vehicles: a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, the Outback (1994–present, also sold as Legacy Outback (Japanese: スバル・レガシィアウトバック, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi Autobakku) in some markets), and an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994–2011).

Most versions of the Outback wagon and Outback Sport have had all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

History

The original Outback station wagon was derived from the wagon variant of the second-generation Subaru Legacy. The first-generation Legacy, which made its debut in 1989, did not receive the cosmetic and suspension modifications to create an Outback version, although Subaru offered an Outdoor option package for the 1994 model year Legacy L all-wheel drive model, which added a compressed air strut height adjustable suspension, a luggage rack, a skidplate, and mud flaps.

Earlier, a raised-roof "Touring Wagon" variant had been offered on the preceding Subaru Leone for the 1988 and 1989 model years. Subaru also sold a raised-roof variant (chassis code BF) of the first-generation Legacy wagon outside the United States. North American Legacy wagons were only offered as the flat-roof variant (chassis code BJ) until a special "GT" model was marketed for the 1994 model year.

The second-generation Legacy wagon became the first generation of the Outback crossover series, called the "Legacy Grand Wagon" in Japan in 1995, and the "Legacy Outback" in most other markets. Compared to the existing Legacy wagon, the "Outback" variant added partial protective plastic side body cladding for off-road conditions, used a raised roof, and would later raise the suspension to provide additional ground clearance. It was introduced at the 1994 New York Auto Show. Aside from other small differences in trim, the Outback shares almost all of its components with the Legacy donor model.

When launched in Australia in 1996, the name "Legacy Outback" was shortened to "Outback", followed in other markets afterwards. In the United States, Subaru also retailed the Legacy SUS sedan between the 1997 and 2007 model years, with similar modifications to distinguish it from the equivalent Legacy model sedan. The Impreza Outback Sport was introduced at the 1996 New York Auto Show, but for the 1997 model year, the donor model names were dropped, and the cars were known as the "Outback" and "Outback Sport".

WHEN THE GARAGE PUT THE CAR UP ON A LIFT IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE REAR SUBFRAME HAD BROKEN RIGHT WHERE THE UPPER CONTROL ARM CONNECTED TO IT WHICH ALLOWED THE TIRE TO LEAN IN TOWARDS THE BODY OF THE CAR WHERE IT RUBBED AGAINST THE BODY, HEATED UP AND THEN RUPTURED. THESE TIRES HAD JUST BEEN INSTALLED 3 DAYS EARLIER. LOOKING AT THE SUBFRAME IT WAS BADLY RUSTED, THE VARIOUS CONTROL ARMS ATTACHED TO IT HAD SOME SURFACE RUST BUT NOTHING LIKE THE SUBFRAME. THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR WAS NOT RUSTED. THE SUBARU DEALER GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF $2000 TO REPLACE THE SUBFRAME, SINCE THE CAR WAS WORTHLESS OTHERWISE I TOLD HIM TO PROCEED. I FOUND OUT THAT MY VEHICLE HAD BEEN SUBJECT TO A RECALL FOR "CERTAIN REAR SUSPENSION SUBFRAME COMPONENTS WERE PRODUCED WITH POOR PAINT QUALITY " ..."WHICH, AFTER CONTINUED EXPOSURE TO CORROSIVE ROAD SALTS FOR A PERIOD OF SEVERAL YEARS, COULD RESULT IN RUST-OUT OF THE COMPONENT AND POSSIBLE BREAKAGE OF THE SUBFRAME. IF SUCH BREAKAGE OCCURS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING OPERATED, CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE COULD BE AFFECTED, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH." MY VEHICLE GOT "TREATED" FOR THE RECALL WHICH INCLUDED CLEANING THE SUBFRAME AND PAINTING IT. I CALLED SUBARU OF AMERICA AND ASKED IF THEY WOULD BE WILLING TO SHARE IN THE COSTS SINCE IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT THE RECALL "TREATMENT" DID NOT WORK AND THERE WAS NO REASON, EXCEPT A DEFECTIVE PAINT JOB, FOR A SUBFRAME TO FAIL ON A 13 YEAR OLD CAR. THE DECLINED TO HELP ME CITING THE AGE OF THE CAR AND THE FACT THAT THE RECALL "WORK" HAD BEEN PERFORMED. THEY ALSO OFFERED A $500 COUPON IF I WANTED TO BUY A NEW SUBARU. WITH SOME INVESTIGATION I FOUND THAT NEARLY EVERY SUBARU THAT WAS INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL, IS NOW FAILING AND IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE DEALER I BROUGHT MY CAR TO EVEN STATED THAT THIS IS A COMMON REPAIR IN THEIR SHOP. THE TOTAL QUOTE FOR REPAIR IS AROUND $1400, WHICH I CANNOT AFFORD AT THIS TIME. MY PROBLEM WITH THIS IS THAT NUMEROUS CAR OWNERS ARE UNAWARE OF THIS FAILURE, AND THAT THE RECALL WORK DID NOTHING TO ABSOLVE THE SITUATION. MY FIRST REACTION IN THIS CASE IS TO PULL THE SPEED CONTROL LEVER TOWARDS ME TO DISENGAGE IT AND TAKE MANUAL CONTROL OF THE CAR TO SLOW DOWN BY BRAKING OR DOWNSHIFTING, AS PER USUAL PROCEDURE. IN THIS CASE THROTTLE FAILED TO DECELERATE AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, UPON WHICH I THEN REPEATEDLY STAMPED THE BRAKE PEDAL, WHICH WAS ALSO UNRESPONSIVE (DID NOT CANCEL ACCELERATION OR SLOW THE VEHICLE). OUT OF OPTIONS, I SWERVED TO THE LEFT TO AVOID THE TRACTOR-TRAILER DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME AND REAR ENDED A MOVING VEHICLE IN THE LEFT LANE. ON 8/19/2013, I CALLED SUBARU TO SPEAK WITH A CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TO HOPEFULLY RESOLVE THE SUBFRAME RECALL ISSUE, AND THEY REFUSED TO REPLACE THE AFFECTED PART OR EVEN WORK WITH ME ON A SOLUTION. I WAS TOLD, "THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO FOR YOU," LEAVING ME WITH A VEHICLE THAT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, BECAUSE OF A POOR QUALITY PART MADE BY SUBARU. ODOR WENT AWAY AFTER A FEW DAYS SITTING OUTSIDE DEALERSHIP SO THEY DID NOT DO ANYTHING (WEATHER MAY HAVE WARMED UP). IT HAPPENED AGAIN IN 2008 AND THIS TIME THEY SAID THERE WAS A FUEL LEAK SO THEY REPLACED THE FUEL HOSE AND CLAMP. IT WORKED UNTIL THE FOLLOWING YEAR WHEN IT GOT COLD AGAIN. LOOKING AT VARIOUS POSTS ON THE INTERNET FOUND MANY OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I TIGHTENED THE CLAMPS AROUND SOME OF THE HOSES AROUND THE FILTER AND IT MOSTLY WORKED. WHEN THE WEATHER IS WARMER THERE IS NO PROBLEM. THIS IS A TEMPORARY FIX AND SOMETIMES DOES NOT WORK SO WELL, ESP. WHEN REALLY COLD OUT. THERE HAS TO BE ANOTHER ANSWER TO THIS PROBLEM. IN THE PROCESS OF RECENTLY REPLACING EXHAUST COMPONENTS AT APPROXIMATELY 130,000 MILES IT WAS NOTED THAT THE REAR SUB-FRAME COMPONENT IS NOW PERFORATED BY RUST EVEN THOUGH SIMILAR COMPONENTS ARE NOT, WHICH WOULD SEEM TO INDICATE THAT THE ORIGINAL REPAIR WAS NOT ADEQUATE. AN EXCHANGE OF EMAILS AND TELEPHONE CALLS WITH SUBARU OF AMERICA HAS RESULTED IN A DECISION BY THEM TO DECLINE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE COMPONENT AT THEIR EXPENSE DUE TO THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE. THE ONLY REMEDY OFFERED WAS A $500 CREDIT TOWARD THE PURCHASE OF A NEW SUBARU.   • Summary: Airtex Products LP (Airtex) is recalling certain model E8598M, E8518M, E8600M, E8596M, and E8597M fuel pumps manufactured July 26, 2013, and July 29, 2013 and used as aftermarket replacements on Subaru Baja's, Outback's and Legacy's. The affected fuel pumps were sold or installed into the aftermarket applications on or after July 26, 2013, and may may leak fuel from the base of a fuel line connection when the gas tank is full.
  • Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Airtex will notify owners, and will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. Recall is expected to begin on January 2, 2014. Customers may contact Airtex at 1-800-880-3056. The recall is expected to begin during January 2014. This recall is being conducted by Airtex, not by Subaru.

    We purchased this car brand new and unfortunately experienced some unexpected issues. At 80K miles, we had to replace the catalytic converter for $2,000. Later, at 115K miles, we had to replace the head gasket for another $2,000. The transmission also needed to be replaced at 125K miles, which cost us over $3,000 for a new or rebuilt one. Instead, we opted for a used transmission and also replaced the CV joints for a total of $1,700. Unfortunately, at 130K miles, we experienced an electrical fire underneath the dash due to an issue with the weather package. Despite these challenges, we spent a total of $8,700 on this car over the course of 6 years. While we initially chose a Subaru for its reputation of reliability, we were disappointed with our experience. However, we understand that every car can have its issues and we hope to have better luck with our next vehicle.

    We purchased this car for two main reasons: its solid performance in snow and its ample backseat room for child seats. We were fortunate to find a private party seller who was the single owner and had all the receipts. While the previous owners had to replace the head gaskets at 80k and overhaul the 5-speed transmission at 110k, we had to replace the front wheel bearings shortly after purchasing the car at 114k. Additionally, the clutch started to chatter, but it had already been replaced at 80k. Although there is high wind noise at highway speeds, the traction control is excellent. Overall, this is an average car, but it does have some great features. We hope that Subaru will consider building small, light AWD cars again, as that is what they do best.

Despite having paid $7,000 for it just a year ago, we have already spent an additional $4,000 on repairs. The issues we have faced include engine lights, overheating, noises, bearings, misfiring, and more.     Bought it new. The car comes with some great extras, including premium sound, heated seats, heated mirrors, and a heated windshield. The manual transmission handles Seattle's steep hills with ease. I haven't had any problems that weren't covered by the warranty, and I plan to keep it for many years to come. The only downside is that the air conditioning isn't as cool as I'd like it to be. Unfortunately, there are only vents in the front seats, so my passengers and dogs either bake in the back or we freeze in front to keep them cool.
