The Honda CR-V (also sold as the Honda Breeze in China since 2019) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda since 1995. Initial models of the CR-V were built using the same platform as the Civic.

Honda began producing the CR-V in Sayama, Japan, and Swindon, United Kingdom, for worldwide markets, adding North American manufacturing sites in East Liberty, Ohio, United States, in 2007; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico, in late 2007 (ended in early 2017); Alliston, Ontario, Canada, in 2012; and Greensburg, Indiana, United States, in February 2017. The CR-V is also produced in Wuhan for the Chinese market by Dongfeng Honda, and also marketed as the Breeze in China for the version produced at Guangzhou by Guangqi Honda.

Honda states "CR-V" stands for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle," while the term "Compact Recreational Vehicle" is used in a British car review article that was republished by Honda, associating the model name with the Sports Utility Vehicle abbreviation of SU-V.

As of 2022, the CR-V is positioned between the smaller ZR-V (marketed as HR-V in North America) – which the CR-V shares platform with – and the larger North American market Passport/Pilot or the Chinese market Avancier/UR-V. It is currently Honda's best-selling vehicle in the world, and the second best-selling SUV globally in 2020.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 7FARS6H93PE
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: (1) Recall Summary American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Honda) is recalling specific 2023-2025 CR-V vehicles due to a defect in the steering gearbox worm wheel. This improperly produced component may swell during use, which compromises the grease film thickness between the worm wheel and worm gear. Furthermore, the worm gear's spring preload was set too high, escalating the sliding force between these parts. Consequently, the combination of reduced grease film and increased friction leads to greater resistance during steering. Safety Risk The heightened friction between the worm gear and worm wheel results in increased steering effort and difficulty, significantly elevating the risk of a crash or injury. (2) Recall Summary American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Honda) is urgently recalling certain 2023-2025 multi-model year Honda vehicles due to critical defects in the high-pressure fuel pump. The improper production has led to the formation of cracks at the solenoid core component, which can result in a dangerous fuel leak during operation, especially in lower mileage vehicles. Safety Risk The presence of a fuel leak poses an extreme risk, as it can ignite in the presence of an ignition source. This scenario significantly heightens the risk of fire, crash, or serious injury, demanding immediate attention and action. I contacted the American Findlay Honda Management Department in Henderson, Nevada, only to be hit with a stark refusal; they will not place me in a new 2025 Honda CR-V Hybrid Sport Touring. As a long-time customer, I felt utterly bewildered and crushed by this response. Just weeks ago, they aggressively pushed this specific vehicle to me, fully aware that significant recalls were on the horizon. This is not just terrible news—it’s a blatant betrayal by management! I am seriously contemplating legal action against American Honda and Findlay Honda in Henderson, Nevada. Their actions scream deceit and predation; they are nothing less than crooks and sharks

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-26
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 7FARS6H99PE
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On several occasions the automatic emergency braking system on my vehicle has engaged for no reason. The vehicle applies the brake quickly with nothing in front or to the side of the vehicle. This sudden braking has almost caused me to be rear ended and has also caused a slight case of whiplash. I’ve contacted my Honda dealer and while they say they’ve had complaints I am told there’s nothing in the works to remedy the issue. I was told to clean my vehicle front sensors (which were not dirty at the time of these instances) and that’s all I could do. This has happened multiple times throughout my ownership of this vehicle with the last incident occurring in late September of this year.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-20
  • VIN: 5J6RS4H41PL
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: March 2024 - Brought vehicle to local Honda dealership, car is diagnosed with a power steering column issue that is affecting tons of Honda models 2022-2024 across the U.S. This issue was not a recall at the time. Estimated 6 months for the part to come in, I open a case with Honda corporate. Since, dealer has refused to do the work on my car, despite it being under warranty. Dealer refuses to communicate with me. This issue has now been made a recall and Honda has confirmed my VIN is affected (worm wheel). New Honda dealership is not taking appointments to provide recall services, they will "call us when parts come in" and are not taking any information about the customer, so how can they call? Said it could be months before the part comes in. I have not been provided a loaner or any productive assistance. This is a 2023 CRV with less than 30k miles and I cannot drive it safely.

STEERING,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-17
  • VIN: 2HKRS6H93PH
  • Components: STEERING,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I went into the Honda of Seattle dealership to repair the #QJT 2023-25 CR-V EPS Grbx Greasing Saf Rec (NHTSA#24V-744) and the #PJW 2023-25 Multi-Model High-Pressure Fuel Pump Stop Sale (NHTSA#PENDING) issues. The service desk informed me that no work could be performed until the parts are delivered to the dealership. I purchased the vehicle from this same dealership. My car sputtered and lost speed for several seconds during a drive in Summer 2023. I had to let go of the gas before the car returned to normal operation. I did not know it at the time but it was most likely caused by the fuel pump defect. I thought it was related to one of the other 2 recalls for the vehicle around the same time. There were many cars driving near me. We were going around a curvy and windy road. I must move from Seattle to Oklahoma City immediately. However, I can't now since it is unsafe to drive my vehicle with a fuel pump and steering defect. I'm unable to extend my accommodations in Washington and so may be forced to drive a long distance in an unsafe vehicle.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
  • VIN: 7FARS4H76PE
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Drivers side door mirror vibrates while driving. Causes issues when looking at it when checking for traffic etc. This has been reported and verified by dealer. This is a known issue by Honda and has been reported by other Honda owners. Dealer told me that Hona is aware but mirrors are back ordered and no time table for repair. This is a safety item.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-06
  • VIN: 7FARS4H75PE
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: While driving my vehicle in snowy conditions, my vehicle slammed on the brakes and sensed a collision. The sensors were covered with snow, and typically, the sensors will turn off when they are obstructed. At the time I was going 30-35 MPH in 1-2 inches of snow and my vehicle detected a possible collision and auto-braked, bringing me to an immediate stop. Should there have been a vehicle immediately behind me, I would have been rear-ended and the vehicle behind me would not have had time to react due to the snow conditions. I cannot stress how dangerous this is while driving in adverse conditions with other vehicles around you to have your vehicle come to an immediate stop. This continued to happen 4 more times at while driving at lower speeds, during turns, driving in parking lots. Each time the system will state something related to forward collision avoidance and the giant "BRAKE" sign will flash in my dashboard. I no longer felt safe driving my vehicle in the snow due to this auto-braking system.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
  • VIN: 7FARS3H78PE
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: When driving at speeds of 40+ mph, I am experiencing stickiness from the steering wheel when attempting to turn the wheel. The steering wheel feels like it is stuck for a second when you start to turn the wheel and then it will turn as normal. This is happening consistently for about 2 months now.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-08
  • VIN: 2HKRS4H2XPH
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: The windshield wipers do not remove water and always leave a film. This film will not go away with defrost, extra cleaning, washer fluid. I replaced the blades and still the reflective film remains. It is extremely hazardous to drive because all light reflects off the film and horribly impairs vision. Honda refuses responsibility. Also, the washer fluid does not clean windows either. Dust also becomes highly reflective with light and horribly impairs vision. Someone needs to fix this asap or there will be multiple accidents. I am not the only one with this dangerous problem.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
  • VIN: 2HKRS6H94PH
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: At startup, routinely see the following messages: Lane keeping assist problem Road departure mitigation system problem Collision mitigation breaking system problem I have taken the car into multiple Honda dealers this year to fix the issue. The first told me I needed to have the Body Control Module replaced, and that the can could try and communicate with the key fob constantly, risking battery drain and posing a safety issue. The part was replaced, but the issue persisted. I then opened a case with Honda corporate, Case #: 14639406. This dealer said there was a "short" in the multipurpose camera and replaced that part. 2 months later, the issues came back.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: 2HKRS4H74PH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: A week ago the steering system started malfunctioning on my 2023 Honda CR-V. While driving on straight and level highways at between 35 to 60 mph, the steering wheel seems to be "sticking" or encountering an obstruction causing occasional overcorrection resulting in almost hitting traffic in the adjacent lane, especially on narrow roads. There are no warning lights or messages related to this condition.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
  • VIN: 5J6RS6H99PL

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-15
  • VIN: 2HKRS4H49PH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I was driving over a bridge and the steering seemed to lock in place. I could not move to the right or left, the steering wheel felt "stuck". I then proceeded to a rotary and was steering to the left but the car seemed to go to the right and would not allow me to continue to the left. Again the steering wheel felt stuck and was very difficult to move. I have had a few other incidents when I felt the car was moving to right or left making it difficult for me to steer. I had assumed it had to do with lane assist but I do not usually have this feature turned on. The vehicle has not been inspected by manufacturer, police or insurance. There was no warning lights. This issue began a few week ago, end of August 2024.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
  • VIN: 7FARS6H98PE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The vehicle's 12V starting battery was completely discharged after sitting unused for 3 weeks. The vehicle was stored indoors during the month of August 2024. The vehicle was located in Minnesota. The 2024 August MN monthly average temperature was in the mid 70's F. The discharge happened again after the vehicle was jumped and run. See the attached dealer invoice for additional details. The vehicle was taken to the local Honda dealer. No problem found. The dealer stated this is normal vehicle behavior. The vehicle was purchased in May 2023 and has less than 14,000 miles. I believe this is a safety issue because I don't trust the vehicle to start after very short storage periods during the winter or as the battery reaches the end of its service life. The loss of battery reserve capacity is 50% at -20F and 20% at 0F. An industry accepted norm for the service life of a 12V battery is that it reserve capacity has decreased to 40% of new. I worry that the vehicle may not start after less than one week of storage under these conditions. Honda Corp. does not publish battery storage guidelines in the owners manual. Honda Corp. and the dealer were requested multiple times to produce documentation on battery storage guidelines. They were unable or unwilling to do so. The Honda dealer did not provide education on vehicle storage as part of the sales process. I do worry about being stranded in our harsh upper Midwest winters during potentially life threatening temperatures. I firmly believe this issue is a design defect with either the vehicle's power management strategy, the battery sizing, or a combination of both. I request your help to investigate this issue and have Honda provide a corrective action.

The contact stated that while his wife was driving at 15-20 MPH and attempting to come to a complete stop, the vehicle suddenly accelerated on its own. As a result, the driver briefly lost control of the vehicle before coming to a complete stop by intentionally running into a curb on the side of the roadway. The air bags did not deploy. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V588000 (Power Train), but the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. A police report was filed, but no injuries were reported. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 16,000.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-10
  • VIN: 7FARS4H20PE
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I purchased a 2023 Honda CR-V LX from Serra Champaign Honda on August 9th. As soon as I drove on the highway, I noticed that the side mirrors were shaking excessively. The driver's side mirror shakes violently at speeds above 50-60 mph, while the passenger side mirror shows minor vibrations at speeds above 70 mph. This causes a severely distorted view, leading to dizziness and nausea, making driving extremely difficult and dangerous. Additionally, the problem is exacerbated at night due to the lights. I was extremely frustrated and upset upon discovering this issue immediately after purchasing the vehicle. I have found that many other customers are experiencing the same problem, and I have learned that there is no recall issued yet. I am reporting this issue to Honda for urgent attention. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The side mirror has issues. It is available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Driving at high speeds on the highway made the vehicle very dangerous due to the excessive shaking of the side mirrors. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? I reported the issue to the dealership, and they acknowledged it but mentioned that it has not been officially recalled yet. They said they would check what can be done under warranty. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? The Honda dealership service center has examined the vehicle, but the issue cannot be fully understood without driving the car at high speeds. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lamps or messages appeared. The severity and danger of the problem can only be realized through actual driving.

Negative 2023 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Robin Schultz 2024-11-21

The car's front seats lack cushioning, causing discomfort and pain in the back and neck during extended drives. Despite raising this issue during the test drive, the salesperson dismissed it as tight leather that would loosen over time. Unfortunately, this has not been the case. Additionally, the gas mileage falls short of the advertised 40 mpg, with the car only achieving 32.6 mpg on econ mode. While it does have impressive features, such as smooth driving and a range of bells and whistles, these issues detract from the overall experience.

  2. Kenyon Boyer 2024-10-18

Although there are some areas for improvement, I have found that my car has a few features that I appreciate. The cabin can be a bit loud on the highway and the suspension is stiff, but it provides a responsive driving experience. Additionally, while the EXL model does not come with navigation, the stereo system is of decent quality.

  3. Angel Cormier 2024-09-16

We've had the CRV for three months now and I must say, the driving experience is really great! Coming from a Honda Pilot, the CRV feels almost like a sports car. The steering is superb, nicely weighted, direct and accurate. The suspension is tuned perfectly. Although the CRV is not the fastest off the line, there is plenty of power to pass on the highway where it matters, and that power is there without any delay. It's simply a joy to drive! However, the seats are a bit hard and uncomfortable. They're okay for shorter trips, like the test drive when we bought it, but there's just not enough padding to make it comfortable for any trips longer than half an hour. It feels like the body is forced into one position, and there is no give. To Honda's credit, the position that the seat forces you into looks ergonomically correct, in the sense that you're forced not to slouch. But the fact remains that they are uncomfortable, and my back hurts after a while. This is a subjective thing, of course, so you may be okay with it. But I recommend checking this carefully. We have a few other nitpicks, such as a weak heater that takes more than 10 minutes to generate some heat, and even then it's not much. Also, I'm fairly tall (6'1) and when I crank up the seat high enough to get enough legroom, my head literally hits the ceiling (which is compromised due to the sunroof). But these were not deal breakers, every car has some issues. For us, the main one was the seat comfort.

If you are driving your CR-V and the low tire light comes on, don't worry! It's possible that there is nothing wrong with your tires. Honda designed the light to remind you to check your tires, or to alert you if there is actually a low tire. Even if you are driving on a busy road, you can find a safe spot to pull over and check your tires with a gauge. If you have already checked your tires and they are fine, don't worry! The light is just a reminder. It's good to know that all your tires are correct, as confirmed by the dealership. It's important to note that this is a common feature in Honda vehicles, and it's designed to keep you safe on the road. Thank you for choosing Honda!

The car has some great features, but unfortunately the steering is not up to par. The speed-adjusted/speed-sensitive steering can be quite heavy and difficult to maneuver, especially at speeds over 15mph. However, at speeds under 15mph, the steering is much more manageable and enjoyable. Overall, the steering can be a bit of a challenge, but it's worth it for the other great features of the car.

The negotiation process was not a pleasant experience. The base sticker price of approximately $36,500 was far from the asking price of over $55,000, which was already inflated with many added options. More options were proposed, which would have totaled $18,000 to $20,000. Even after negotiating 'as is', we still had to pay for some unwanted options. It seems that the profit is in the options. There were also some other complaints, such as the lack of a built-in garage door opener, and the navigation system being dependent on Apple Play or Android Google map. Additionally, the seats are a little narrow for larger individuals, and the passenger seat sits too low for my wife and cannot be raised. The cargo area is not flat with the rear seats down. However, despite these issues, I must say that I like the new design. The car rides firm and handles nicely, and has good safety and driver assist features. I anticipate good gas mileage. The EX-L features are similar to the prior year's 'Touring' model, with the only difference being that the hybrid comes in the Touring trim level.

The 2023 EX-L is our 4th CR-V. While it is beautiful and has lots of technology compared to our 2007, I was disappointed to find that there is no space to keep my purse when in the passenger seat. Additionally, I prefer a standalone GPS system instead of having to tie up my phone (and battery) with Android Auto. It would also be great to have vents and charging ports for back seat passengers. The drink storage in the doors is a bit awkward and the front passenger seat is too low and needs a height adjustment lever. I miss the drawer under the front passenger seat for storing manuals and paperwork, the hard rear shelf, and the extra storage slots in the front console that the 2007 had. If the 2023 EX-L had more storage cubbies, a standalone GPS system, rear seat charging and vents, somewhere to put my purse, better drink cup options, and a higher front passenger seat, I would be very happy.

Overall, this hybrid SUV is decent. However, the fuel efficiency may not be as advertised, so keep that in mind. It's unfortunate that Honda did not include a spare tire, unlike Toyota and other brands. The drive quality and cabin comfort are average, but the road noise and suspension could use some improvement. Thank you for considering this SUV!

I'm really enjoying most of the features and the redesign! However, I do have a couple of concerns. Firstly, I'm not a fan of the whippy horn - it sounds like a clown horn at the circus! I'm surprised that I haven't seen any other complaints about this. Secondly, the cup holder isn't deep enough, and my water bottle falls over when I make turns. Did they not test this? Lastly, the front bumper sensor for parking doesn't engage if you have the radio on. I'm not sure why this is the case. Additionally, I did notice that the front seats are rather narrow, so if you're on the larger side, you might not be comfortable. Overall, I absolutely love my new Touring CRV!

It's great to hear that you're enjoying your new car! The ride is smooth and comfortable, and the safety features are definitely a plus. It sounds like the EXL AWD with a 1.5 turbo engine is a great fit for you, with plenty of power and no issues merging in traffic. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!
