2005 Subaru Outback problems
The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automaker Subaru for two different SUV-themed vehicles: a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, the Outback (1994–present, also sold as Legacy Outback (Japanese: スバル・レガシィアウトバック, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi Autobakku) in some markets), and an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994–2011).
Most versions of the Outback wagon and Outback Sport have had all-wheel drive as standard equipment.
History
The original Outback station wagon was derived from the wagon variant of the second-generation Subaru Legacy. The first-generation Legacy, which made its debut in 1989, did not receive the cosmetic and suspension modifications to create an Outback version, although Subaru offered an Outdoor option package for the 1994 model year Legacy L all-wheel drive model, which added a compressed air strut height adjustable suspension, a luggage rack, a skidplate, and mud flaps.
Earlier, a raised-roof "Touring Wagon" variant had been offered on the preceding Subaru Leone for the 1988 and 1989 model years. Subaru also sold a raised-roof variant (chassis code BF) of the first-generation Legacy wagon outside the United States. North American Legacy wagons were only offered as the flat-roof variant (chassis code BJ) until a special "GT" model was marketed for the 1994 model year.
The second-generation Legacy wagon became the first generation of the Outback crossover series, called the "Legacy Grand Wagon" in Japan in 1995, and the "Legacy Outback" in most other markets. Compared to the existing Legacy wagon, the "Outback" variant added partial protective plastic side body cladding for off-road conditions, used a raised roof, and would later raise the suspension to provide additional ground clearance. It was introduced at the 1994 New York Auto Show. Aside from other small differences in trim, the Outback shares almost all of its components with the Legacy donor model.
When launched in Australia in 1996, the name "Legacy Outback" was shortened to "Outback", followed in other markets afterwards. In the United States, Subaru also retailed the Legacy SUS sedan between the 1997 and 2007 model years, with similar modifications to distinguish it from the equivalent Legacy model sedan. The Impreza Outback Sport was introduced at the 1996 New York Auto Show, but for the 1997 model year, the donor model names were dropped, and the cars were known as the "Outback" and "Outback Sport".

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-05
- VIN: 4S4BP61C357
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Vehicle brakes failed while driving, the brake pedal went to the floor and almost caused a serious car accident. Yes, vehicle and brake lines are available for inspection upon request. My safety, the safety of others and more importantly my life and the lives of others were severely threatened because of the major break failure that occurred. It is terrifying to think that I was unknowingly driving around this vehicle with an imminent accident that could happen anytime, without any warning, which could have killed me. After taking pictures of my brake lines, recording videos and doing some quick research, I called a local to inspect my brake lines. I told them the scenario that I experienced and reported to them that my brake lines were covered in rust. I told them that I found out my vehicle had a recall remedy done on the brake lines in 2017, which is before I owned the vehicle. I told them that the rust and corrosion was in the same spots that were supposed to be fixed in the recall repair and that I am positive that the repair was done incorrectly or the repair was not done at all. I requested they take pictures of the brake lines and show them to the manufacturer or use the photos I took but they ensured they would take care of all of that. Called for update a week later and was unable to get in contact with anyone. I waited over a month before one of my calls was finally answered. I was told they still hadn’t looked at my vehicle yet. Having no vehicle had a very negative impact towards my job because I had no transportation for so long. I called back a few days later and was told that they would not repair my vehicle. My vehicle was not inspected by the police or insurance because I wasn’t in an accident. I was less then a minute from home when this life threatening incident occurred and thankfully was able to pull the car into my driveway. No warning lamps, no messages and no symptoms of the problem were present prior to this life threatening occurrence.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-16
- VIN: 4S4BP61C157
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: There should be a recall for front suspension on this vehicle if not the entire suspension. Mine has been garage kept since day 1, is in showroom condition, not driven in salt on roads during snow, therefore no reason for the suspension to be in this condition. In 2019 at 74,000 miles I had to have the entire front end suspension all components replaced at a cost of over $2,500 USD the suspension was also causing what others refer to as "drifting" under any road driving conditions on dry or wet pavement at any speed above 30mph and would and still does after having the entire suspension replaced, drift, unstable, and when the original suspension was replaced even after being flawlessly maintained the suspension components from the factory were severely worn and including rubber gaskets, sway bars, etc and appeared to have a rust or corroded appearance in spite of the vehicle never being driven in weather during snow when most areas would place salt on roads which is a primary cause of rust or corrosion. The factory suspension also caused significant wear to any tires this causing any tires to wear uneven and require replacement within less than 15kmi. After suspension was replaced in 2019 tires were replaced as well. Vehicle driven 15kmi since 2019 and replacement, in 2021 the suspension again was drifting, causing severe uneven tire wear, and at highway speeds 60mph& above causes a severe drift and vibration which could cause a dangerous situation for the average driver and at highway speeds U have to literally hold the vehicle on the road with a moderate force or it will I'm fact drift and cause incident. I believe the manufacturer should recognise this issue and repair or replace all the components of suspension at no cost to consumer as I am not the only one affected by this. I have receipts I can provide upon request showing the suspension was replaced. Please do not show my personal information or very specific details about my vehicle online.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-16
- VIN: 4S4BP67C856
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: The contact owns a 2005 Subaru Outback. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed and went to the floorboard. The brake warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to drive home where he inspected the vehicle and discovered severe corrosion at a connection point on the brake line. The contact stated that the brake line was leaking brake fluid. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V311000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle had already been serviced previously under the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-09
- VIN: 4S4BP68C454
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Vehicle experienced sudden complete brake failure while driving due to a rupture in brake system in the exact area of a known defect / recalls NHTSA SUBARU RECALL WQG-43 and WQK-47 (both completed) which had been issued to inspect and repair the defect. Safety of driver / occupants were immediately put at grave risk due to inability to slow or stop vehicle. Car was traveling on a two way high traffic road at a speed of approximately 30+MPH. I was able to stop slowly using the emergency hand brake though only after attempting to pump the brakes which became absolutely unresponsive (this took approximately 7-10 seconds while pumping the Brake pedal). It was pure luck that there was no one directly in front of me at the time. If anything had been in front of me my choices would have been: A) swerve to the right into parked cars B) swerve left into oncoming traffic or C) run into or hit whatever was in front of me. None of those would have been acceptable options and all could have potentially injured or killed occupants within the vehicle not to mention the potential to have injured or killed any other parties involved in a collision. I am frankly amazed that a brake system defect of this nature was not fully repaired and or replaced using a non-defective design and parts. I view any application of a aerosol surface treatment as temporary & superficial at best. It's only a matter of time for the brakes to fail on every 2005-2009 Subaru that has this defect. The risks to vehicle occupants and any other individuals involved in potential accidents are simply too high.Vehicle is currently at IRA Subaru in Danvers Massachusetts and has been inspected by them confirming the problem with photo documentation. There was no other prior warning before the sudden complete brake system failure. It is unclear if the Vehicle or component has been inspected by the manufacturer. No other party has inspected the vehicle. Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Mileage: 77,884K
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-15
- VIN: 4S4BP61C557
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: puddle of brake fluid under car no brakes after looking at it 4way joint connector at rear of car is leaking . online says recall was done but specifications for the repair are ludacris to spray wax over corrosion ! the lines are already damaged and that would just seal the corrosion in and continue to deteriorate! that recall in itself is a safety hazard and needs to be reevaluated!
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-09
- VIN: 4S4BP61C457
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: The contact owns a 2005 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing cruise control failures. Additionally, the contact stated while driving at 50 MPH up a steep hill of a bridge, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle decelerated significantly to 20-25 MPH. The accelerator pedal was depressed but failed to respond. The contact stated that the vehicle lost motive power and remained at the bottom of the hill facing an incline, while there was oncoming traffic. The check engine warning light and other unknown warning lights illuminated. The contact engaged the Sport mode first gear and the vehicle moved slowly. The contact continued to depress the accelerator pedal but the vehicle failed to respond. The contact switched to the slow lane and drove to the top of the incline and made a left turn off the end of the bridge downhill. The vehicle rolled down, allowing him to veer to the side of the road. The contact parked the vehicle. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the engine was running at 2,000 RPM, even though the vehicle had no motive power. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle. The contact shifted to drive and low gear, and he was able to drive the vehicle to an independent mechanic. The independent mechanic diagnosed that the throttle position sensor had failed. The vehicle was repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 177,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-01-31
- VIN: 4S4BP86C054
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Parasitic Battery Drain: When the vehicle is in use, the CAN system in the car relies on an electrical current to be operated as intended. When the vehicle is not being driven, the CAN system should enter a sleep mode in which it stops drawing significant electrical current. However, vehicle does not enter sleep mode when the car turns off, resulting in a "parasitic battery drain." Local Subaru dealer maintenance department has not been able to determine any way to fix. Battery drains completely after approx 1 week of nonoperation (and sometimes sooner) leaving me (owner) stranded and unable to start vehicle without obtaining a jump start. Has also required recurring battery replacement at a cumulative significant cost. Not sure what to do and do not want to sell to another person that would inherit this ongoing issue.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-07
- VIN: 4S4BP67C956

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-05-05
- VIN: 4S4BP68C754
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AS NORMAL TO SLOW DOWN AND THE PEDAL WENT SOFT AND I HAD NO BRAKES. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP. UPON INSPECTION THE LINES WERE LEAKING FROM THE SAME PLACE REPAIRED IN RECALL WQK47, NHTSA CAMPAIGN 14V311000. VISUAL INSPECTION COULD CONFIRM THAT THE INITIAL RECALL WQK47 REPAIR COMPLETELY FAILED CAUSING SERIOUS DANGER TO MY LIFE. I RESEARCHED COMPLAINTS ABOUT WQK47 RECALL AND CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY SUBARU OWNER WITH THIS SERIOUS LIFE THREATENING ISSUE. I CALLED MY DEALERSHIP AND EVEN SPOKE WITH CORPORATE SUBARU AND BOTH SAID SINCE RECALL WAS PERFORMED ONCE REPAIR/REPLACEMENT WILL COST ME. I CANNOT FATHOM WHY, IF THE FIRST RECALL REPAIR FAILED RESULTING IN A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION, SUBARU WOULDN'T WANT TO IMMEDIATELY FIX THE PROBLEM AND ENSURE ALL THEIR CUSTOMERS WHO HAD THIS RECALL PERFORMED ARE STILL SAFE AND FUNCTIONING TO PROPER STANDARDS. *TR
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-12-19
- VIN: 4S4BP86C654
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I PURCHASED THIS 2005 SUBARU OUTBACK THIS PAST SUMMER. I HAVE DRIVEN IT ON THE VERY SAME ROAD I DESCRIBE BELOW, UNDER DRY CONDITIONS, WITH ABSOLUTELY NO ISSUES WHATSOEVER. ON THIS PARTICULAR NIGHT, THE ROADS WERE JUST STARTING TO BUILD SNOW AND FREEZE, BUT OTHERS WERE DRIVING AND PASSING WITH NO ISSUES. WHILE TRAVELING ON THIS TWO LANE ROAD, WITH A SPEED LIMIT OF 70MPH, MY SUBARU DEVELOPED A SWAY IN THE BACK END. IT FELT LIKE THE SUBARU WAS GOING TO LOSE CONTROL AND SWAY INTO ON COMING TRAFFIC. IF I WENT OVER 30MPH THE SWAY BEGAN AND I FEARED THAT THE "SWAY" WAS GOING TO SEND MY CAR INTO THE OPPOSITE LANE OF TRAFFIC AND CAUSE ME TO HAVE A HEAD ON WRECK. I DIDN'T NOTICE ANY OTHER VEHICLES HAVING ANY ISSUES. DURING THIS TRIP, I HAD TO DRIVE NO FASTER THAN 30MPH ON A TWO LANE ROAD WITH A 70MPH SPEED LIMIT. THERE WERE SEVERAL CARS BEHIND ME AND SEVERAL IN THE ONCOMING LANE. I COULDN'T PULL OVER AND LET TRAFFIC PASS BECAUSE THERE WASN'T ANY TURN OUTS AND THERE WAS CONTINUOUS ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I WAS FORCED TO DRIVE LESS THAN 30MPH, FOR FEAR THAT I WAS GOING TO HAVE A HEAD ON COLLISION, AND HAD TO STRADDLE THE RUMBLE STRIP ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. I WAS NEARLY FORCED OFF THE ROAD BY A SEMI TRUCK FOLLOWING ME. THIS WAS AN EXTREMELY SCARY SITUATION. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING ON SNOW AND ICE COVERED ROADS FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND I HAVE NEVER HAD AN EXPERIENCE AS HORRIBLE AS THIS. I FEARED FOR MY LIFE AND THE LIVES OF MY CHILDREN RIDING IN THE CAR!!!! AFTER GETTING PAST THE ICE AND SNOW ON THIS ROAD, I DROVE ON, GOING 70MPH, AND HAD NO ISSUES WITH THE CAR AT ALL. THE "SWAY OCCURS" ON ICY/SNOW COVERED ROADS WHILE GOING OVER 30MPH. THE "SWAY "ONLY HAPPENS IN THE REAR OF THE CAR. PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND FIXED!!!

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-28
- VIN: 4S4BP67C754
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I HAVE A 2005 SUBARU OUTBACK THAT HAD A RECALL FOR BREAK LINE RUSTING. RECALL #WQK-47. THE BREAKS NO LONGER WORK DO TO BEING COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT. THE DEALER TELLS ME THE REPAIR IS IMPOSSIBLE TO COMPLETE AND THEREFORE THE CAR IS INOPERABLE. THE DEALER AND CORPORATE SUBARU CLAIM THAT THEY HAVE NO OBLIGATION TO REPAIR, REPLACE OR REIMBURSE FOR THIS CAR. 2005 Subaru Outback recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 9 recalls for different components of the 2005 Subaru Outback.
- Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester, 2003-2006 Baja, 2004-2011 Impreza, 2004-2014 WRX (including STI), 2003-2014 Legacy and Outback, and 2006 Saab 9-2X vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in the states of Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia or "Zone B." These vehicles had their passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part. The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.
- Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Subaru Baja vehicles manufactured January 22, 2003, to July 21, 2004, 2004-2005 Impreza vehicles manufactured January 28, 2003, to May 31, 2005, 2003-2008 Subaru Legacy vehicles manufactured January 22, 2003, to May 2, 2008, 2003-2008 Subaru Outback vehicles manufactured February 18, 2003, to May 5, 2008, and 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to March 17, 2005. The affected vehicles are equipped with a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon its deployment.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify their owners and General Motors will notify Saab owners. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The Subaru recall began on June 17, 2015. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. The Saab recall began on July 27, 2015. Owners of Saab vehicles may call 1-800-955-9007. Subaru's number for this recall is WQR-53. Note: The recall completely supersedes recall 14V-399 (WQL-48) and partially supersedes recall 14V-763 (WQP-51) in that model year 2004 through 2005 Subaru Impreza and model year 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles are now only part of this campaign. Note: On December 18, 2015 Subaru informed NHTSA of an expansion of this recall to include certain model year 2003-2004 Subaru Baja, 2003-2008 Subaru Legacy and 2003-2008 Subaru Outback vehicles.

- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Legacy and Outback vehicles, and 2003-2005 Baja vehicles sold, or ever registered, in geographic locations associated with high absolute humidity. Specifically, vehicles sold, or ever registered, in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Florida and adjacent counties in southern Georgia, as well as the coastal areas of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passengers frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify their owners. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2015. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's number for this recall is WQP-51. Note: This recall supersedes recall 14V-471. This recall has been partially superseded by 15V-323. - Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Outback and Legacy, 2008-2011 Impreza and 2008-2014 Impreza WRX/STI, and 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, currently, or formerly, registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Salt water could splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion of the brake lines. Note that affected vehicles not currently, or formerly registered, in the salt belt states identified above are eligible for repair, at no cost to the customer, upon request.
- Consequence: Brake line corrosion may result in brake fluid leakage. Fluid leakage may result in longer distances being required to slow or stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will test the brake system by depressing the brake pedal and inspecting for brake fluid leaks. If no brake fluid seepage is observed, the affected areas will be rustproofed with anti-corrosion wax. If brake fluid seepage is observed, the brake lines will be replaced followed by rustproofing with anti-corrosion wax. These services will be performed free of charge. The recall began July 2014 and second notifications will run through November 2014. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQK-47. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-110 which applied to certain 2005-2009 Legacy/Outback vehicles. This is a fantastic station wagon that offers a lot of utility. With 250 HP, it provides great performance, while the smooth transmission ensures a comfortable ride. While the fuel economy of 19 mpg may not be the best, it's still a fair deal considering the performance and utility you get. The tire pressure sensors are a bit sensitive and may alarm the driver early, especially during fall and spring when temperatures vary. However, overall, this is a great car with full-time all-wheel drive that provides ultimate control in any weather. Nothing slips, nothing slides - it's a truly great car!

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with the Outback 3.0R Sedan that I purchased last October, 2004. I have been through 2 blizzards in Mammoth, CA and the monsoon rains here in Southern California, and I must say that this car has exceeded my expectations. The 8+ inch body lift came in handy when 3-4 feet of snow dumped overnight during Christmas, and I had no problems getting out in the morning. I am thrilled that Subaru finally put a nice strong, responsive engine in such a sturdy body. Thank you for taking the time to read my message!

Congratulations on your new car! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your 2005 LL Bean Outback. Not only is it stylish, but it's also safe and handles like a dream. It's wonderful to know that the service department for Subaru is outstanding, no matter which one you have used. It's always important to have a reliable car that can handle any weather condition, and it sounds like your Outback is doing just that. Plus, the new style and colors are a great addition. And how cool is it that your car tells you when to check the tires? Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

I was pleasantly surprised by the smooth and refined ride of this vehicle. As a company lease car, I had many options to choose from, but the Subaru Outback VDC with the 3.0L H6/5sp auto transmission did not disappoint. In fact, it has one of the best rides I have experienced in any vehicle, even surpassing luxury brands such as Mercedes, Audi, BMW, and Lexus. The car handles well on twisty roads and the H6 engine is super-smooth, although it could use a bit more torque. The interior is incredibly comfortable and quiet, with top-notch trim. I am thoroughly impressed by this car and believe it is highly underrated.

It's great to hear from someone else who lives in the Lake Tahoe area of California! I completely agree with you about this car - it handles turns and curves with such grace and surefootedness, unlike any other 4wd I've owned before. I've had 4Runners, Cherokees, and more, but this one really stands out. The manual shift option is a great feature, allowing the transmission to respond instantly to your input. I've also noticed that after each oil change and differential & transmission fluid change, the car has broken in beautifully. It's amazing how much it has changed since I first drove it off the lot - it was very tight when new and needed breaking in, but now it's perfect. I've driven it for about 15k miles and it's just getting better and better. The VDC is also a great feature, especially in the snow. I've passed so many SUVs that have wiped out in the banks - it's really impressive. The low center of gravity is definitely a plus, making this car tops in my book!

My turbo Outback was an amazing car, especially in the snow with snow tires. It had a lot of power and was very fun to drive. The interior was also very comfortable. However, over the last year, I had to take it to the shop overnight at least 5 times for major engine and transmission repairs. Unfortunately, repairs on the turbo model were very expensive. Despite my love for the car, I had to make the difficult decision to let it go as it was not worth the financial burden. While I may miss it, I am confident that I made the right choice. It's interesting to read reviews from Honda drivers complaining about a $700 timing belt replacement, as I know from experience that repairs on a turbo Outback can be much more costly.

I recently purchased this car and have driven it for 109,000 miles with very few issues. I had to replace the brakes at 45,000 miles and the tires at 52,000 miles, which was a bit expensive at $800. I commute 140 miles each way to work about 10 times a month and get an average of 26.6 mpg. This is actually my third Subaru, but I'm considering a change for my next car. I've read some reviews that say this car isn't good in the snow, but I live in the northeast and drive many miles on the backroads of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, and I think this car is great in the snow. One thing to note is that if you're looking for quick acceleration and power, this may not be the car for you. However, if you're looking for reliable, economical transportation with AWD, this is a great option.

My first Subaru purchase was the Outback, after owning Hondas and Toyotas previously. With the manual transmission, I am able to achieve 26 mpg, which is impressive for a 4wd station wagon. Although there were two recalls for the ECU, Subaru promptly fixed them at no cost. I have not experienced any major issues with the car, except for the headlights burning out quickly (about once a year) and some minor rattles from the dash in certain temperatures. Unfortunately, the factory had a bad wheel alignment which caused the tires to wear out in less than 28,000 miles. Despite this, the dealer refused to take responsibility and blamed me, which is completely false.

I've owned this car for just over 9 months, and it's my 9th Subaru. Overall, it's a very nice car. The front seats are comfy, and the instrument panel is easy on the eyes. However, the center instrument cluster is just too busy. Wait until you see it at night - it looks like I'm flying a jet! It wouldn't be so bad if different areas (heat, radio) were different colors, but everything is amber at night, making it very confusing to find things. Although I'm not too happy with the automatic transmission, I love the Sports mode! The gas economy is not great, and I think most pick-up trucks do better. Just remember to use high test gas ONLY.

I purchased my 2.5i Subaru Outback used about two and a half years ago, after my previous car was totaled in a nasty rainstorm. Although the four-wheel drive was not needed as much due to milder winters, my gas mileage did decrease from the mid-30s per gallon (Camry) to around 20 mpg, with the occasional rare 25 on the highway. Unfortunately, after only two years of owning the vehicle, an annoying clicking sound developed when I turned the wheel and both axles needed to be replaced. The axles were quite expensive since they could not be aftermarket, only Subaru. I was informed by several mechanics that this is not uncommon for Subarus. After spending over $1,000, I was advised to consider returning to Toyota-land.
