2002 Subaru Outback problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automaker Subaru for two different SUV-themed vehicles: a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, the Outback (1994–present, also sold as Legacy Outback (Japanese: スバル・レガシィアウトバック, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi Autobakku) in some markets), and an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994–2011).

Most versions of the Outback wagon and Outback Sport have had all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

History

The original Outback station wagon was derived from the wagon variant of the second-generation Subaru Legacy. The first-generation Legacy, which made its debut in 1989, did not receive the cosmetic and suspension modifications to create an Outback version, although Subaru offered an Outdoor option package for the 1994 model year Legacy L all-wheel drive model, which added a compressed air strut height adjustable suspension, a luggage rack, a skidplate, and mud flaps.

Earlier, a raised-roof "Touring Wagon" variant had been offered on the preceding Subaru Leone for the 1988 and 1989 model years. Subaru also sold a raised-roof variant (chassis code BF) of the first-generation Legacy wagon outside the United States. North American Legacy wagons were only offered as the flat-roof variant (chassis code BJ) until a special "GT" model was marketed for the 1994 model year.

The second-generation Legacy wagon became the first generation of the Outback crossover series, called the "Legacy Grand Wagon" in Japan in 1995, and the "Legacy Outback" in most other markets. Compared to the existing Legacy wagon, the "Outback" variant added partial protective plastic side body cladding for off-road conditions, used a raised roof, and would later raise the suspension to provide additional ground clearance. It was introduced at the 1994 New York Auto Show. Aside from other small differences in trim, the Outback shares almost all of its components with the Legacy donor model.

When launched in Australia in 1996, the name "Legacy Outback" was shortened to "Outback", followed in other markets afterwards. In the United States, Subaru also retailed the Legacy SUS sedan between the 1997 and 2007 model years, with similar modifications to distinguish it from the equivalent Legacy model sedan. The Impreza Outback Sport was introduced at the 1996 New York Auto Show, but for the 1997 model year, the donor model names were dropped, and the cars were known as the "Outback" and "Outback Sport".

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-06-12
  • VIN: 4S3BH806727
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THE AIR CONDITIONER BEGINS TO BLOW HOT MOIST AIR AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES OF WORKING PROPERLY. MULTIPLE MECHANICS INCLUDING A SPECIALTY SHOP CAN'T DIAGNOSE, AND THE ONLY OPTION IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE A/C COMPRESSOR BECAUSE THE CLUTCH ISN'T SOLD SEPARATELY. I'VE READ MANY ACCOUNTS OF THE SAME "INTERMITTENT" A/C THAT ONLY WORKS ONCE THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF AND BACK ON, THEN STOPS WORKING SECONDS OR MINUTES LATER FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THE VEHICLE CAN BE STATIONARY OR IN MOTION AND THE A/C JUST QUITS.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-04-02
  • VIN: 4S3BH686327
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE AND I HAVE HAD FOUR SEPARATE INCIDENTS THAT MY HEAD GASKET HAS HAD TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS A COSTLY REPAIR AND GIVEN MY CAR HAS 190,000 MILES ON IT I BELIEVE FOUR ISSUES DEALING WITH THIS SAME SITUATION NEEDS TO BE PROPERLY ADDRESSED. NOT ONLY DOES THIS ISSUE RESULT IN A HUGE OUTLAY OF MONEY BUT IT GETS OIL ALL OVER THE ENGINE, PARTS, AND DRIVEWAY THAT NEEDS TO BE CLEANED. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ASSISTANCE IN THIS MATTER.

THEY PUT A PAINT/COATING OVER RUSTY AREA. I WAS PRETTY SKEPTICAL BUT BROUGHT CAR TO MY GARAGE IN VT MONDAY OCT 19 AND THE LEAKY BRAKE FLUID MUCH MORE CLEARLY VISIBLE- DUE TO SMOOTHER (THOUGH BUMPY FROM OXIDATION BELOW) PAINT SURFACE. I ALSO SAW LEAKING COOLANT, LEAKS IN OIL PAN, AND A CRACK IN MUFFLER PIPE JUST ENGINE SIDE OF MUFFLER (IT HAD BEEN GETTING NOISIER AND NOISIER) MY MECHANIC POINTED OUT THE TIMING BELT GASKET WAS MISSING AND ONE BOLT 'MISSING' ; IT WAS STICKING OUT OF ANOTHER 'HOLE' THAT WAS FOR A FULLY THREADED BOLT. THE SELLER HAS SENT LONG-WINDED INSULTING E-MAILS AND STATES I MUST RETURN CAR TO HIM TO HAVE THE SAME DEALER SERVICE IT. I AM TAKING IT TO A&M, 400 MYSTIC AVE, SOMERVILLE THIS MORNING NEAR ME! FOR ESTIMATE TODAY. THERE'S A REJECT STICKER FROM READING PETROLEUM ON IT- I DIDN'T KNOW MA & VT HAD RECIPROCAL STATUS- BUT I THINK THE VT INSPECTION IS MORE STRINGENT, SAFER AND COMPREHENSIVE

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-04-15
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: WHEN GETTING THE CAR INSPECTED WE FOUND OUT THE FRAME OF THE CAR WAS RUSTED SO BADLY IT WAS CRACKED. IT WAS IN SUCH A KEY SPOT THAT IT WASN'T FIXABLE AND THE CAR COULD HAVE EASILY LOST A WHEEL ON THE ROAD WITH LITTLE TO NO WARNING (A SMALL BUMP COULD HAVE BEEN ENOUGH TO TRIGGER AN ACCIDENT). THE CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF WELL AND WHEN INSPECTED JUST A YEAR AGO AT THE SUBARU DEALERSHIP THERE WAS NO MENTION OR SIGN THAT THIS COULD POTENTIALLY BE A PROBLEM. THE FAST DETERIORATION OF THE FRAME UNDERNEATH THE CAR IS THE COMPLAINT AND WE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO PART OUT THE OTHERWISE WONDERFUL CAR DUE TO SAFETY AND UNABLE TO GET IT FIXED. *TR

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-01-13
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: IN 10 DEGREE WEATHER, MY 2002 SUBARU OUTBACK WAGON DEVELOPED A FUEL LEAK WHILE BEING DRIVEN BY MY 17-YEAR-OLD CHILD. THIS IS MY SECOND SUBARU WAGON AND THE SECOND TO HAVE COLD WEATHER FUEL LEAKS. I TIGHTENED THE CLAMP ON THE OFFENDING FUEL LINE AND I HOPE THAT IS AN ADEQUATE FIX. BUT IT IS SIMPLY UNACCEPTABLE THAT SUCH A DANGEROUS PROBLEM HAS NOT HAD A RECALL, AND THAT IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR 20 YEARS. (MY FIRST SUBARU WITH THIS PROBLEM WAS A 1991 LEGACY WAGON.) HOW MANY CAR FIRES HAVE RESULTED FROM THIS PROBLEM? HOW MANY INJURIES OR EVEN FATALITIES? PLEASE MAKE SUBARU TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR A POORLY DESIGNED FUEL LINE. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-12-19
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 4S3BH665627
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: RUBBER FUEL LINKAGES CONTRACT IN LOW (BELOW 30F) TEMPERATURES, ALLOWING FUEL TO LEAK INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE LEAKING FUEL CREATES A VERY STRONG, AT TIMES INTOLERABLE, FUEL VAPOR SMELL IN THE CABIN. SOME LEAKS DRIP ONTO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND ENGINE BLOCK SO ENGINE FIRE IS A POSSIBILITY. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-10-22
  • VIN: 4S3BH686527
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: ALTHOUGH MY CAR IS NOT LISTED ON THE AIRBAG RECALL, I AM CONCERNED MY CAR MIGHT HAVE THE AIRBAGS FROM TAKATA. THE YEAR THE TAKATA AIRBAG RECALL STARTED IS 2000. MY CAR IS A 2002 SUBARU OUTBACK. THE 2003 SUBARU OUTBACK IS ON THE TAKATA AIRBAG RECALL LIST. HOW CAN I MAKE SURE MY CAR'S AIRBAGS WERE NOT MANUFACTURED BY TAKATA? *TR

  • VIN: 483DH675827
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 SUBARU OUTBACK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES WOULD NOT RELEASE AFTER BEING APPLIED, EVEN WHEN THE CONTACT'S FOOT WAS NO LONGER ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 135,000.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-02-01
  • VIN: 4S3BE896027
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: DATES ARE APPROXIMATE, PROBLEM IS ONGOING. UPON INITIAL START-UP, IN COOL/COLD WEATHER THE BRAKE PEDAL WILL BE VERY HARD AND BRAKES ARE VERY WEAK REQUIRING TREMENDOUS FOOT PRESSURE WITH STILL REDUCED BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS. AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME AND MULTIPLE STOPS BRAKE ASSIST SEEMS TO INCREASE AND THE BRAKES GET STRONGER OR NORMAL. I HAVE RESEARCHED THAT THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM WITH SUBARU CARS AT HIGHER MILEAGE. IT IS SAID TO BE WATER IN THE BRAKE BOOSTER HOSE ONE WAY VALVE. CHANGING THE HOSE, I AM TOLD, WILL NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM AS MORE WATER WILL ENTER THE SYSTEM AND FREEZE OR GUM PU THE WORKS. VERY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY FOR DRIVERS WHO DO NOT HAVE THE STRENGTH TO PRESS SO HARD ON THE PEDAL. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-01-08
  • VIN: 4S3BH675327
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: OVER LAST FEW WINTERS, WHEN TEMPERATURES DROP TO FREEZING THERE HAS BEEN A BAD FUEL SMELL IN CABIN. ESPECIALLY WITH HEATER BLOWING, THOUGH IT STILL SMELLS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CAR EVEN WITH THE HEAT OFF. ONCE THE WEATHER WARMS UP THERE IS NO NOTICEABLE SMELL. I HAVE TRIED TIGHTENING 5 CLAMPS AS SUGGESTED IN AN ONLINE HELP PAGE. NOT SURE IF THIS HELPED OR PROBLEM JUST WENT AWAY WITH THE COLD WEATHER. LOCAL SHOP COULDN'T SEE LEAK ON CURSORY CHECK WHILE THE ODOR AS AT IT'S WORSE. MAYBE ONLY VISIBLE IF IT'S FREEZING AND UP ON A LIFT. SUBARU DEALER SUGGESTED FUEL LINES NEED TO REPLACED AS NORMAL PROCESS AS CAR AGES. SUBARU SHOULD FIND SOLUTION TO THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM THAT'S OBVIOUSLY COMMON TO THESE VEHICLES AND PUT OUT CLEAR INSTRUCTION ON DIAGNOSING AND FIXING THIS ISSUE. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-01-17
  • VIN: 4S3BH665126
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: SINCE THE RECENT TEMPERATURE DROP WHERE WE LIVE (MARYLAND, DC METRO REGION), WE'VE NOTICED A STRONG GASOLINE SMELL INSIDE THE CAR'S CABIN. THE SMELL IS STRONG ENOUGH THAT WE ARE UNCOMFORTABLE DRIVING LONG DISTANCES, FOR OUR OWN HEALTH AND THAT OF OUR CHILDREN. THE SMELL ONLY APPEARS WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING (THOUGH IT DOESN'T SEEM TO DEPEND ON SPEED). WE'VE OWNED THE CAR SINCE MARCH 2010, AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE'VE NOTICED THE ISSUE; IT'S ALSO THE COLDEST WEATHER WE'VE ENCOUNTERED SINCE PURCHASE. APPARENTLY THERE'S A FUEL-LINE-RELATED RECALL FOR IMPREZAS OF THIS VINTAGE, BUT NOT YET FOR OUTBACKS. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-12-06
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY WIFE DROVE HER CAR, A 2002 SUBARU OUTBACK, ABOUT 5 MILES HOME FROM WORK, AND TOLD ME IN THE EVENING HER CAR REEKED OF GASOLINE WHEN SHE ARRIVED AT HOME. WHEN I CHECKED HER CAR THE GAS ODOR HAD DISSIPATED, BUT WHEN I STARTED IT AND BACKED IT OUT OF THE GARAGE THE GAS ODOR WAS VERY STRONG. I MOVED IT BACK INTO THE GARAGE AND SHUT IT OFF. I DISCOVERED ONLINE THAT THE ODOR WAS LIKELY DUE TO A FUEL HOSE LEAK ASSOCIATED WITH A COLD WEATHER START. THE TEMPERATURES HERE ARE COLD FOR MISSOURI, WITH HIGHS IN THE LOW 20'S. IT STILL IS COLD, ALBEIT AS A MINNESOTA BOY IT STILL SEEMS LIKE SPRING. AT ANY RATE, I FOUND A WEBSITE WITH USEFUL DIAGRAMS AND I LOCATED THE HOSE UNDER A BRACKET (OF COURSE), AND MANAGED TO UNCOVER THE HOSE AND TIGHTEN THE CLAMPS, WHICH WERE VERY LOOSE. AFTER RE-ASSEMBLY I DROVE THE CAR TO BURN OFF THE GAS REMAINING ON THE ENGINE AND I TESTED THE REPAIR WITH ANOTHER COLD WEATHER START LATER. I HAVE ORDERED A REPLACEMENT HOSE FROM THE SUBARU DEALERSHIP FOR 12 BUCKS. I UNDERSTAND THAT RECALLS AND SERVICE ADVISORIES HAVE OCCURRED AND ARE IN PLACE FOR OTHER SUBARU MODELS INCLUDING THE CLOSELY RELATED 2001 LEGACY. I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THE 2002 OUTBACK AND EVERY OTHER SUBARU THAT USES THE HOSE PART # 807707130. THE DISCUSSIONS ONLINE ABOUT THIS ISSUE REVEAL SOME PEOPLE ARE DRIVING WITH THEIR WINDOWS OPEN OR WITH CABIN AIR SET TO RECIRCULATE, OR WAITING UNTIL THE ENGINE WARMS UP ENOUGH FOR THERMAL EXPANSION TO SEAL THE LEAK. AS AN INDUSTRY CHEMIST I FIND THIS IGNORANCE ABOUT THE HAZARDS OF GASOLINE FIRES APPALLING. HOWEVER I THINK SUBARU'S PIECE-MEAL APPROACH TO ADDRESSING THEIR DEFECTIVE ENGINEERING IS FRIGHTENING. DON'T THEY CARE ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS? MY WIFE TEACHES CHEMISTRY, A TYPICAL CUSTOMER, ACCORDING TO SUBARU ADS. SHE LOVES HER SUBARU. SUBARU DOES NOT LOVE HER. *TR

Negative 2002 Subaru Outback car reviews

The lower plastic on the Subaru Outback seems to have a peeling issue. This can happen after your car has been severely door dinged or when a rock goes through your bumper. Although this is cosmetic, it is disappointing for a brand new car to have paint peeling.

I have driven my car for 122,000 miles and plan to keep it until it reaches 250,000 miles. I have replaced the head gaskets five times, with the last four being done by the dealer. However, I found a mechanic who suggested using the turbo head gasket, which has proven to be a permanent solution. I also replaced the pistons at 122K due to seized rings and excessive noise on cold days. I opted for third-party pistons, which have been working well. The car handles great, and I have reset the engine computer for better performance. There is some wind noise in the driver/passenger window, but it can be fixed by squeezing the molding together where the side mirror is mounted. Overall, I am confident that this car will last me until 250,000 miles.

I would suggest avoiding this car as it has been known to have issues, especially after reaching 60k miles. Despite being well taken care of, my family's car has required multiple repairs costing thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, the issues have not been resolved and have even caused dangerous situations such as the alternator going out while my daughter was driving on the highway. While some mechanics may have differing opinions, it is widely known that this model and year can be problematic. Although Subaru may have improved since 2002, I personally would not trust a company that has produced such a problematic car.

Although this car has some issues, it is still a pretty good car overall. The wind noise can be easily fixed with a simple repair, which is caused by the frameless windows. However, the engine noise is a bit more complicated as it is a result of the manual gearbox. The fifth gear has to rev high to allow the cruise control to pull the car uphill, which causes the car to rev at 3-4000 rpm at highway speeds and makes a real racket. Additionally, the raspy and unrefined 4 cyl. engine doesn't help. Despite these issues, the car is secure on dirt roads and in snow, and is fun to drive on both. The exterior has the distinctive Subaru look and the interior is well executed. Overall, this car is a good choice for those who prioritize performance and handling over a quiet ride.

I bought this car for my son back in 2015. It had 110k miles on it and unfortunately, the body had a lot of rust. I was against the purchase, but my son, being a millennial, believed everything he read on the internet. He showed me a quote that said 97% of Subaru's built since 1997 are still on the road, which made him believe that they are incredibly reliable and safe. However, this quote didn't mention the oil leaks from the head gasket, electrical problems, exhaust issues, and other problems that these cars have. I honestly don't understand how these cars got such a reputation for being great. Do people who drive these cars know what a 'great car' is? I ended up spending about $7000 on repairs over 18 months. Thankfully, my son totaled the car, so I don't have to worry about any more repair bills. The only good thing about this car was the AWD system, which was pretty good. In my opinion, if you 'must' have a Subaru, lease one. They are relatively cheap and come with a warranty during the lease period. At the end of the lease period, simply give it back.

Positive 2002 Subaru Outback car reviews

Congratulations on your first Subaru! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the quiet ride on the highway and that you've found the wind noise to be minimal. It's also reassuring to know that you've had a positive experience with reliability and service, despite the issue with the McIntosh stereo. It's impressive to hear that the AWD system has exceeded your expectations and has been able to handle challenging weather conditions. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I test drove a 1997 Subaru Outback Wagon and was pleasantly surprised by the smooth ride, which was comparable to our Lexus LS 400. Eventually, I decided to purchase a 2002 Outback Loaded. The automatic transmission is incredibly smooth and allows for hyermiling techniques such as coasting in neutral when approaching lights or descending grades. It re-engages drive effortlessly and smoothly. I was able to achieve approximately 35.8 MPG with plenty of room for improvement. The ride is excellent and acceleration is brisk. For my next Outback, I am considering a turbocharged or hybrid model when available.

I could definitely see myself selling Subaru's if I ever needed a job. This car drives like melted butter with its smooth performance. It is a fantastic highway vehicle, perfect for both mountainous terrain and long stretches of road in Texas. The solidity and quiet drive are what I appreciate most, especially after driving a Ford Explorer that was priced similarly. The only thing I would like to see added is a keyless remote that would allow access in case I ever lock my keys inside. Other than that, I have no complaints about this vehicle. As a tried and true Subaru fan, I believe they will continue to lead the way in improving gas mileage for all vehicles in this country. Currently, I am getting 18-24 miles per gallon.

I've always admired Subaru for their AWD, which fascinated me back in the 70s. Finally, I bought one and it came with the McIntosh promo stereo CD player. This stereo has rekindled my love for music, as I had forgotten what beautiful music sounds like. The special sound design of the interior contributed to the greatness of the stereo. I've since listened to other systems in more expensive cars that cannot compare. The car has power with the 212hp 6 and is quiet, probably because of the special sound treatment mentioned already. I haven't had any problems at all and the AWD can go through snow like it's not even there. Ice is tough for any car. The only downside is wind noise, but overall, I'm well satisfied.

This is our 3rd Subaru after leaving Mercedes in our past. We have found the reliability and safety of the Subaru to be consistently impressive. The car handled well in deep snow and slush on the highway. The dash is well designed and everything works perfectly all the time. We have had no issues with the paint or engine, and we have no complaints. Overall, we believe that the Subaru is a great car at a reasonable price.
