Developed by GM PATAC in China and produced by joint venture SAIC-GM, it was positioned below the more advanced Sonic. In 2023, GM imported a new version to Mexico in a sedan and hatchback form, developed and manufactured by another Chinese joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling.

- Summary: First sign of problem - Sept. 2021. Driving on highway at about 35 mph. Simultaneously, engine quit running, door locks unlocked and all dash lights came. In a matter of less than a second the doors relocked, forward momentum of vehicle caused transmission to kick start the engine and jolt forward rather violently. Then the dash lights went off and the vehicle resumed normal operation. This continued to happen with increasing frequency. I took the vehicle to the local Chevy dealer to set up an appointment for service. When I explained the problem to the representative, he told me that the battery was the likely cause. I went to an auto parts store and had the battery checked. It did, indeed, have a bad cell. I replaced the battery and the car operated fine for several months but the problem began to recur, infrequently at first but continued to worsen. I discovered later that the same problem also happened when when the car was sitting idling. The difference was that without the forward momentum of the car, the engine did not restart and required being shifted into neutral and started with the key. Also, when driving at a speed of less than about 30 mph, the forward motion was not enough to kick start the engine and shifting into neutral and using the key to restart was necessary while coasting in traffic. Final symptom, the above has happened only now the dash lights go out and the vehicle does not respond at all. After several minutes and several attempts the lights come back on and the vehicle runs. The car had 55,563 miles on it when I bought it and in just over 3 years, I have put 6,237 miles on it and it now sits because I am afraid to drive it. I have had the vehicle back at the dealer twice since having the new battery installed. They simply tell me that they cannot recreate to get a code and therefore cannot help.

When opening the door from the inside it cuts your hands if you don't notice it. Both door handles started to have the same issue within the same year. My children, my wife and myself all have been cut from the same problem. I tried to remove the parts that caused the injury due to us not being home and still required to use the door handles. I didn't want further injury to occur to my family.

- Summary: Dashboard speed indicator dimming and getting brighter for no reason. no warning lamps. Check engine lamp turned on then after fueling vehicle engine won't start, or won't shut off. Vehicle is an automatic transmission. A button must be engaged to put vehicle in park, drive, etc. The Button often sticks and keys cannot be removed because the transmission won't go in to park . On July 17 the button popped out while driving. This could have stranded myself or my family. The cause of the issue is unknown, but drivers may become distracted when the end of the automatic gear shift lever pops out or as in my case when putting the vehicle into park it pops out and breaks off entirely. I believe it to be a defective part that can easily break. My vehicle has less than 70,000 miles. It has not been assessed by an insurance agent or dealership yet

- Summary: The manual transmission's clutch master cylinder failed on two occasions. It snapped into two pieces. On the first occasion, on March 24, 2022 I stepped on the clutch pedal, and it remained on the floor. The car was essentially inoperable. I was able to coast to a stop by the curb, but the car had to be towed. The part was repaired at a Chevrolet dealer with GM parts and returned to me on March 31, 2022. On June 9, 2022, the part failed again, in the identical manner. The part snapped into two pieces. The Chevrolet dealer is, over my objection, replacing the part. I have objected to the replacement of the part, because I am concerned that it is defective and certain to fail once again in the same way as it did on the two other occasions. I was fortunate on both occassions to be on suburban streets with very light traffic. I was able to coast to a stop at curbside on both occasions. My safety and the safety of others would have been at risk if the failure had happened on a heavily trafficked high-speed superhighway, or had I been ascending a hill on a busy road. The failure of the part makes it impossible for a driver to respond to the situation, as it disables the transmission system.

In the affected vehicles, equipped with the base radio and OnStar, the radio may lock up due to a software issue, causing the display to go blank and all audio functions to cease. This car is a blast to drive and surprisingly spacious on the inside. While it's not the best in the snow and has limited cargo space, I still enjoy zipping through traffic in it. The stereo system is impressive for an economy car, although I do wish it had a CD player. While I haven't achieved the 38 MPG promised by the dealer, I'm still satisfied with its performance. Although my next car will likely be larger with a V8, I still love this car.

I bought the car mainly for its spacious interior and well-designed dashboard. It felt cozy and comfortable, especially with the heated seats and convenient cup holders. Although the center cup holders may be more suitable for rear passengers than front ones. During my frequent drives from San Antonio to Baton Rouge and back, I noticed that the car's handling is not as good as some of the more expensive models in the GM lineup, possibly due to the suspension and weight distribution. The stability control can be a bit of a nuisance and affect acceleration when making turns after stopping at intersections. Using octane 93 or above does make a difference in performance, but it requires this level of octane before the stock computer will even consider upping the performance. Unfortunately, there are no temperature gauges for the oil/water, which would be crucial in detecting potential engine damage. If you're interested in monitoring the health of your ride, I recommend swapping out the stock entertainment for the latest Double Din with better navigation and rear camera support, and adding a few gauges. I took great care of the car before I moved to a different country and had to sell it. I changed the oil (full synthetic Mobil 1) and filter every 3k-5k and never had any issues with it.

It is clear that a more thorough inspection and repair is necessary to address the issue with confidence.

This is specifically for the 1.4 Turbo engine. Chevy used plastic parts in the engine that runs extremely hot due to the turbo. I've replaced all parts in my cooling system (reservoir tank, hoses, thermostat housing, water outlet) and already 3 years later the thermostat housing went again. However, I found a solution by replacing the plastic piece with an aluminum aftermarket replacement, and it's going great. It's important to keep an eye on your coolant and oil levels monthly to catch any problems early on. Although there is an extended warranty for the camshaft cover, Chevy won't replace it until the engine light comes on. Waiting for that moment can be frustrating and costly. On the downside, the paint on the roof and hoods of these cars tends to fail, regardless of the color. The radio screen also has a tendency to fail, resulting in phantom beeping for months until it's replaced. On a positive note, these cars are really fun to drive and have great handling. They also offer plenty of storage and are relatively inexpensive to fix when things go wrong. If you are handy, this is an easy car to work on yourself despite it being a really small engine. Overall, I would recommend this car with the caveat that it requires some maintenance and attention to detail.

I had a 2015 Chevy Sonic for just under a year. It was my second car. Since I drive over 40,000 miles a year, I wanted something cheap with better gas mileage than my Buick. I got a great deal on mine with just over 11,000 miles on it. It was a blast to drive with its quick turning, and I always looked forward to filling up the tank because it was so cheap. Unfortunately, I did have a few issues with it. The thermostat went out within a week, but thankfully it was covered by the bumper-to-bumper warranty. After that, I had to get a purge valve and a new gas pedal replaced due to a failing sensor. Later on, I had trouble with the heat not coming on when it was cold out, but the blower motor was replaced and it worked better. However, it still acted up sometimes. I was almost stranded at a friend's house I was house-sitting at because the car wouldn't start, but after getting the starter replaced, it worked better. Despite these issues, I enjoyed my time with the Sonic, but eventually decided to upgrade to a 2018 Chevy Impala, which has been running smoothly for over a year now!

I purchased a brand new 2015 Chevrolet Sonic LT Sedan with only 7 miles on it. It is an affordable car with good gas mileage and easy to drive. The audio options are great too! However, I did experience some issues with the indoor blower motor for air and heat, as well as the front driver side wheel bearing which went bad twice. The passenger one also went bad once. Thankfully, all of these issues were covered under my extended warranty or parts warranties. If you are considering purchasing this car, it is important to note that you may need to spend some time at the dealership for repairs. It is disappointing that the wheel bearings did not last the life of the car, but overall I have had a positive experience with this vehicle.
