1999 Subaru Impreza problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 1999 Subaru Impreza problems

The Subaru Impreza 1999 is known to have several common problems, which are often reported by its owners. Here are some of the most frequently encountered issues with the 1999 Subaru Impreza:

  • Check Engine Light: The check engine light is often illuminated in the 1999 Subaru Impreza, which can be caused by various reasons, including a faulty knock sensor. The most common cause of the check engine light turning on intermittently when driving the Impreza is the knock sensor, which is very easy to order a replacement from Subaru and install the new one.
  • Clutch Chatter: The clutch chatters when starting the car from cold, which can be a problem if the car is no longer under warranty. If there's no warranty, then a complete clutch assembly needs to be replaced.
  • Engine Problems: The 1999 Subaru Impreza has engine problems, which can be costly to repair. The most troublesome model years for the Impreza are the 2008 and 2012 models, which have developed problems that drew the most complaints from their owners.
  • Air Bag Problems: The Subaru Impreza is one of the vehicles that have been affected by the airbag recall, which was launched by Subaru UK in late 2004. The recall affected about 1500 cars, and was over concerns that a control valve cover might come loose, causing oil to leak, which could lead to the risk of fire. Check to see if your car was affected, and if any necessary work has been done.
  • Transmission Problems: The 1999 Subaru Impreza has transmission problems, which can be caused by a faulty synchromesh system. This is a known flaw in the gearbox system of the Impreza, and if ignored, can lead to the destruction of multiple parts of the car. Replacement synchromesh systems can be found on Subaru's parts list, but installing them can be challenging.
  • Brake Problems: The 1999 Subaru Impreza has brake problems, which can lead to a long brake distance. The brakes on the Impreza are seriously under-specified, and they will wear out incredibly quickly. Installing a whole new brake kit on both sides of the front of the car is recommended.
  • Exhaust Problems: The 1999 Subaru Impreza has exhaust problems, which can be caused by skipping an oil change. Oil sludge and muck will build up quickly, and your oil filter will become very blocked. If not sorted out quickly, the car can see catastrophic failure across multiple parts. A new oil filter needs to be installed to fix this problem.

These are some of the most common problems with the 1999 Subaru Impreza, which are often reported by its owners. It is essential to address these issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the car's safety and reliability.

  • Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY VIN # IS CORRECT. YOUR COMPUTER IS OFF. ANYWAY, THE REAR WHEEL BEARING (RIGHT SIDE) ON MY SUBARU 2.5RS HAS GONE BAD WITH ONLY 500 MILES ON THE CAR. I HAVE CONTACTED MANY SUBARU 2.5RS OWNERS OVER THE INTERNET THIS LAST WEEK AND FOUND THAT MANY OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH REAR WHEEL BEARINGS SIEZING UP WITH VERY LOW MILES ON THEIR CARS. ONE MAN REPORTED HE IS TAKING HIS 2.5RS IN FOR THE THIRD TIME TO HAVE THE BEARINGS REPLACED, WITH ONLY 26,000 MILES ON THE CAR. AS YOU MIGHT EXPECT, EVERYONE THAT IS EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM IS GETTING THE SAME "NO ONE ELSE IS COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM" ATTITUDE FROM THEIR RESPECTIVE DEALERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. BUT WE ARE COMPLAINING, AND NO ONE IS LISTENING. THIS IS A SERIOUS DEFFECT IN THE REAR WHEEL BEARINGS OR IN THE INSTALLATION PROCCESS AT THE FACTORY. A SEIZED REAR WHEEL BEARING COULD CAUSE AN OPERATOR TO LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. YOU SHOULD BE GETTING MORE COMPLAINTS ON THIS DEFFECT IN THE FOLLOWING WEEKS. OWNERS ARE COMING TOGETHER VIA THE INTERNET AND VOICING THEIR CONCERNS ABOUT THIS, AND ARE BEING ENCOURAGED TO FILE WITH THE NHTSA IF THEY HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. I MORE THAN WELCOME ANY FEEDBACK YOU MAY HAVE TO MY E-MAIL OR TELPHONE. I WILL ALSO ASSIST YOU IN ANY WAY I CAN IF NEEDED. THANKYOU FOR HEARING MY CONCERNS ON THIS MATTER.

Negative 1999 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Einar Aufderhar 2024-08-24

This is a great car! It's a fantastic initial value due to its aging. The car looks decent and performs very well. The AWD feature is wonderful and it handles nimbly, making it great on dirt roads and in the sand. The cabin design is simple and functional, without being too fancy. While it's not the most spacious car, it's still a good choice for a family if you opt for the bigger wagon. However, fitting four people in the car can be tough for the two in the back. The car is spritely and versatile, without being too oversized. It's a great blend of low-level performance, utility, fuel economy, and value. While there are more expensive cars that offer more features, this car is a great choice for those who want a reliable and affordable option!

  2. Abner Pfannerstill 2024-05-21

Great handling with decent power. Not as reliable as Honda, but it has never quit on me, which is good. I only had to change the clutch, ABS speed sensor, and leaky radiator, but none of these had me calling the tow truck. I love the styling of the car, and it's a blast to drive.

  3. Berta Runolfsdottir 2024-03-21

The car has covered 53000 miles and required a new engine block. It appears that the pistons were too small for the cylinders, causing this issue. Additionally, the frameless doors tend to rattle and eventually fall apart inside due to lack of support for the glass. The heater fan may also squeal, chirp, or fail to work properly.

  4. Lucas Waelchi 2024-03-13

This car is perfect for those who drive long distances in mountainous or snowy areas. It is highly reliable, although it may not get more than 30 mpg. The rear seat may be a bit cramped for taller passengers, but the cargo room is pretty good, especially with the rear seat folded. Overall, it's a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable and sturdy car.

  5. Marvin Lowe 2024-02-08

If you're considering buying a Subaru, I would recommend going for a Legacy instead of an Impreza. The build quality of the Legacy is substantially better. Although I have babied my Impreza for the past 5 years, it continues to fall apart. I've had to replace the rear wheel bearings three times, the power window regulator died, the steering column coupler fell apart, and the struts and alternator died at 70K. I also had to replace the engine at 100K after a bad rod knock developed (after fixing a head gasket leak), and the CV joints have torn repeatedly. It's been a frustrating experience, and I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone. Despite the AWD system and overall pep of the engine being great, the poor build quality of the Impreza is a major issue.

Positive 1999 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Giovani Sauer 2024-11-09

This vehicle handles exceptionally well, hugs the curves really well, accelerates quickly for a 2.2 liter, shifts adequately.

  2. Keeley Emmerich 2024-10-11

This was my first new car purchase and I wish I had never traded it in! It was perfect. Living in the Pocono Mountains in Northeast PA, with our harsh winters and mountainous terrain, I never had any troubles, even with V-rated directional performance tires! It was unreal! I never had to shovel it out after the plows went by, and oil changes were so easy (no jacking required). However, the AWD did wear tires out faster than rear or front drive.

  3. Rory Bechtelar 2024-09-18

I've owned my Subie for the past 4 years and it's been a great ride. When I bought it, I knew it had a rebuilt title and had the passenger front redone, including rewelding some of the fenderwell. It had 92k mi on it then, and now it has 133k mi. It has never let me down. Although the factory clutch had some minor defects and didn't have a good clamping force, I replaced it with a performance one. It's a fun ride, and I love taking the long way home from work. I baby it about 80% of the time and drive it hard the rest, and not once have I had an issue with the car. It has developed a small oil leak (1/2 qt between oil changes), but it's not enough to matter. The only real downside is the decent MPG's and the interior that looks a bit cheap.

  4. Albert Mante 2024-09-10

My Impreza used to be my dad's old winter car, but when we moved to AZ it was given to me since my old car died. It's such a fun little car to drive around back roads, with decent power and great handling. The powertrain has been reliable, and I've even driven it cross country with no issues. Unfortunately, the frameless windows have been a bit of a pain. Three of my windows do not roll down because they are off track and the power window motors are busted. Additionally, the rear hatch squeaks and rattles, but it's nothing I can't live with. Despite these little problems, I absolutely love my car and plan on holding onto it until it dies. Our previous Subarus have made it over 200k and I only have 76k after 8 years, so I'm sure it will last me a while!

  5. Darrel Green 2024-09-06

I've owned my car for 4 years now and it has been such a great car! Handles beautifully, fast, reliable, great gas mileage and...... oh yeah, FUN!!!
