2005 Subaru Impreza problems
The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.
Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.
Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.
A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 2005 Subaru Impreza problems
The Subaru Impreza 2005 is known for several common problems that have been reported by its owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Clutch Issues: The clutch system on the Subaru Impreza 2005 can be problematic, with a known fault in the gearbox system. If there is a crunching feeling and a knocking sound when shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear, it is likely that the synchromesh system is the cause. This issue can be indicative of a serious problem with the transmission, which is best avoided.
- Brakes: The brakes on the Subaru Impreza 2005 are under-specified, leading to longer braking distances and a poor response from the brake pedal. This issue can result in the need for a new brake kit for each side of the front of the car.
- Steering Rack Bushes: The steering rack bushes on the Subaru Impreza 2005 can cause sloppy handling and poor control on turning, especially in cars from 2004. It is essential to drive any potential purchase to the full extent of the cornering, especially on slower roads, to detect this problem.
- Timing Belt: The timing belt on the Subaru Impreza 2005 should be replaced after 125,000 miles, along with the water pump and tensioner. Any car that hasn't had these parts replaced should be avoided.
- Oil Sludge Build Up: Turbocharged Imprezas can suffer from oil sludge build-up if the oil isn't changed regularly. Check the color of the oil in a potential purchase, and if it's full of muck and debris, the engine could be in a less than adequate state with underlying problems caused by dirt getting into supposedly friction-free parts.
- Crash Damage: Subaru Imprezas have a reputation for being loved by owners of games like Gran Turismo due to their rapid acceleration and on-the-road power. Check the bodywork and chassis for signs of scrapes and hard driving, as this could indicate that the car has been consistently pushed to its limits over the years. It's essential to ensure that any WRX car has a specific model number welded to the chassis to avoid falling for a low-grade vehicle at a hiked-up price.
In summary, the Subaru Impreza 2005 has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of, including suspension, clutch issues, brakes, steering rack bushes, timing belt, oil sludge build-up, and crash damage. By checking for these issues and ensuring that the car has been well-maintained, buyers can make an informed decision about whether the Subaru Impreza 2005 is the right car for them.

- VIN: JF1GG68595H
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THE KEY INTERMITTENTLY GETS STUCK IN THE IGNITION SWITCH WHEN THE GEARSTICK IS SET IN THE 'PARK' POSITION. THE CAR CAN BE TURNED OFF, BUT THE KEY CANNOT BE MOVED FORWARD INTO THE #1 POSITION (LOCK/OFF) AND CANNOT BE REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION IN THE #2 POSITION (ACCESSORY). THIS SCENARIO RETAINS THE ELECTRICAL IN THE 'ON' POSITION WHICH POTENTIALLY DRAINS THE BATTERY AND FORCES THE DRIVER TO INDEFINITELY REMAIN WITH THE VEHICLE TO AVOID A DEAD BATTERY AND/OR VEHICLE THEFT. SUBARU HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THIS ISSUE IN SERVICE BULLETIN 16-112-18R (NHTSA ID NUMBER: 10155220). THE SUMMARY IS AS FOLLOWS: 'THIS BULLETIN ANNOUNCES A DESIGN CHANGE TO THE CVT SELECT LEVER (SHIFTER) MECHANISM IN RESPONSE TO ISOLATED CUSTOMER CONCERNS OF NOT BEING ABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN PARK. THE CAUSE IS CONTAMINATION OF THE PARK-RANGE SWITCH INTERNAL COMPONENTS.' MANY CONSUMERS BELIEVE THAT IF THIS PROBLEM WAS SERIOUS ENOUGH TO REQUIRE A REDESIGN TO THE CVT (CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION), THEN IT IS SERIOUS ENOUGH TO REQUIRE A RECALL.' PLEASE NOTE THAT EVEN THOUGH YOUR INCIDENT REPORT FORM REQUIRES THE USER TO SELECT "ONE DATE" WHEN THE INCIDENT HAPPENED, THAT THIS INCIDENT IS ONLY THE FIRST OCCURRENCE OUT OF MULTIPLE OCCURRENCES. THE PROBLEM IS NOW ONGOING AND UNRESOLVED FROM THE REPORTED DATE FORWARD.

FOUR MONTHS NOW AND THE DEALER SIMPLY TELLS ME THE PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AND MORE CARS ARE BEING RECALLED WITH THE SAME PROBLEM! UNTIL THE REPAIR IS PERFORMED, WE ARE ADVISED TO NOT ALLOW PASSENGERS TO RIDE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. A FEW WEEKS OF NOT ALLOWING PASSENGERS IS ONE MATTER, FOUR MONTHS IS RIDICULOUS. AND THERE IS NO PROMISE OF REPAIR ANY TIME SOON. AN APPOINTMENT WAS MADE FOR THE REPAIR ON 8/17 AND AFTER WAITING 2 1/2 HOURS I WAS ADVISED THEY HAD RUN OUT OF THE PARTS. THEY WERE EXPECTING MORE AND I WOULD BE CALLED BY WEDNESDAY OF THAT WEEK. HAVING NOT BEEN CONTACTED BY THE DEALER ON 9/3 I CONTACTED SUBARU OF AMERICA. GRANT NOBLE WITH SUBARU OF AMERICA CONTACTED THE DEALER AND ADVISED ME THE PART WAS EXPECTED IN VERY SOON. NOW, TWO MONTHS LATER, NO REMEDY!!! PERHAPS, YOU CAN ALLOW THE AIRBAG TO BE DISABLED SINCE NO PASSENGERS ARE ALLOWED AS IT IS. CAN SUBARU PROVIDE ANOTHER VEHICLE OR COMPENSATE ME FOR THE INCONVENIENCE AND EXTRA EXPENSE OF DRIVING ANOTHER VEHICLE DURING THIS TIME? I WILL NEED THE AWD SUBARU WITH WINTER WEATHER.

When you go shopping for a car, you want to find the perfect one. I test drove a Forester and it handled great for a larger car. Then, just for fun, I decided to give the Impreza a try. I was very impressed with how maneuverable it was. The gas mileage was a factor for me, and the Impreza could do everything I wanted the Forester to do, but it handled much better. The styling was sleeker, and again the gas mileage was a big plus. It's also roomy and has a good safety rating. Plus, it holds its resale value. You really couldn't ask for more. This car has heart.

Got it over a week ago and I can't take my hand off the wheels. I decided to go for the RS mainly because of its fuel economy, theft avoidance, and suitability as my daily driver. It's an absolute thrill to drive, especially on twisty corners. The gears and suspension are outstanding, and the engine growls like a beast. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with the performance and handling of my RS. I can't wait to take it out in the snow!

Hey there! I recently got a Subaru and a utility trailer to replace my truck, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The Subaru's AWD is a game-changer in the snow, and it gets an impressive 24-27MPH compared to my old truck's 17-18. Plus, it can tow up to 1500 pounds, which is perfect for all my household chores and toy hauling needs. The mechanics of this car are top-notch - I've put it through its paces and it hasn't failed me yet. I even went 80,000 miles before replacing the brakes and 50,000 before the tires! And let me tell you, this car handles like a dream in the snow. It's almost too easy! :)

This car is amazing! I'm so glad I chose it over the EVO. It handles so well in the corners and is a joy to drive on straightaways. There's really nothing else like it.

I've had my 05 Impreza RS Wagon for a week and so far, it's been great! The car is built in Japan with excellent quality control, making it both fun to drive and very reliable. While the 165hp may not be fast enough for an AWD, it's definitely good enough for a daily commute, I guess.

Great power range and handling! I'm really impressed. Although I have a neck injury that can be aggravated if I'm in the car for more than two hours, I find the ergonomics to be excellent. At 6'3 and 190#, I have no problem getting in or out of the car, and there are several seating positions that I find comfortable. The back seat is big enough for two adults, which is a plus. I've noticed that the car attracts more attention than I had counted on, but the majority of it is positive. The noise level is livable, and the gas mileage is about 20 mpg. The paint is very hard, which makes it scratch easily, but the trunk is spacious. Overall, I'm really happy with this car!

This car is exceptional in the snow. I live in a very hilly area and had no problems navigating the icy roads. The car is extremely quick with a quarter mile of 12.4 seconds. I love to drive it all the time. Even though the gas mileage stinks, it's still great to drive and I don't mind spending the extra cash for gas. I absolutely love this car and I can't imagine ever buying anything else.
