2002 Subaru Impreza problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 2002 Subaru Impreza problems

The 2002 Subaru Impreza is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. These issues range from mechanical faults to maintenance concerns, and they can significantly impact the car's performance and reliability.

One of the most frequently reported problems with the 2002 Subaru Impreza is engine noise, specifically a knocking sound that comes from the engine. This issue is often attributed to a worn-out connecting rod bearing, which can cause the rod to knock against the crankshaft. While this problem may not immediately affect the car's performance, it can lead to more severe engine damage over time. The recommended solution is to replace the faulty connecting rod bearing or, in some cases, the entire engine.

Another common problem with the 2002 Subaru Impreza is the need for significant maintenance and repairs. For example, a car with 85,000 miles may require a new rear differential, valve job, and new tires, costing around $4,000. These maintenance costs can add up quickly, making the car less cost-effective and reliable in the long run. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these costs and factor them into their decision-making process.

The 2002 Subaru Impreza also has issues with its suspension system, specifically worn-out suspension bushes. These bushes can cause clonking noises when the car is driven, indicating that they need to be replaced. This problem can affect the car's handling and ride quality, making it less safe and comfortable to drive. Replacing the worn-out suspension bushes is the recommended solution.

Another common problem with the 2002 Subaru Impreza is poor clutch take-up, which can make the car difficult to drive and cause premature wear and tear on the clutch system. This issue can be caused by various factors, including worn-out clutch components or incorrect clutch adjustment. The recommended solution is to have the clutch system inspected and repaired by a qualified mechanic.

Finally, the 2002 Subaru Impreza is known for its high maintenance costs, particularly when it comes to servicing and repairs. Many owners opt for independent specialists instead of dealerships due to the high cost of dealership servicing. However, even with independent servicing, the big service needed every three years can be quite expensive. Therefore, potential buyers should budget for these costs when considering purchasing a 2002 Subaru Impreza.

In conclusion, the 2002 Subaru Impreza has several common problems that owners have reported over the years. These issues include engine noise, significant maintenance and repair costs, suspension problems, poor clutch take-up, and high maintenance costs. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and budget for them accordingly to ensure that they can maintain the car's performance and reliability over time.

Is the 2002 Subaru Impreza RS a good car?

Lots of fun, but a compromise.

Plenty of power for its age and weight, with decent enough room to haul stuff around. It just always felt like a compromise to me. It was fast, sure, but it still had less than 300hp. It had room for 5 people, but it had trouble hauling stuff around.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-10
  • VIN: JF1GG65562G
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The passenger side lower control arm was rusting out without my knowledge and while driving, a part of it broke in half which caused my front passenger side while to turn the wrong way and ripped apart the CV Axle causing me to swerve to the left and promptly stopping the vehicle causing cars behind me to swerve out of the way. Thankfully, I was in the far left lane which avoided me smashing into another car. After research, I found a recall that included my car's make, model, year, and VIN range but was not applied to my car due to it not being registered in a "salt state". Had this car been treated in the first place like other same model cars were, it would not have had this issue. The car was purchased and has been in the Northern Virginia area for its whole life. Virginia is not a salt state, however, this car has been in and out of WV, MD, PA & DC which are all salt states. This car was originally purchased in Alexandria, VA which borders Washington DC. The NHTSA Campaign Number is: 11V464000 (SUBARU’S SAFETY RECALL NUMBER WVX-34). I reached out to Subaru Dealerships in my area which helped me open a case with Subaru of America. My case representative said that Subaru of America is not authorized to add vehicles to a recall and that only the NHTSA can do that. I emailed the NHTSA who then recommended that I submit a formal complaint with the NHTSA.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-07-23
  • VIN: JF1GG65532H
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: HELLO, I HOPE THIS MESSAGE FINDS YOU SAFE AND WELL. MY PROBLEM IS AS FOLLOWS: CONTROL ARM FAILURE EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN PREVIOUS RECALL FROM 2011 (LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE AT HANGAR BRACKET; SAFETY RECALL: WVX34|NHTSA CAMPAIGN: 11V464000). I WAS NEVER PERSONALLY NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL, THE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE LEADING TO A NEAR ACCIDENT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IS WHAT ALERTED ME TO THE PROBLEM. I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT, APPROXIMATELY 50MPH, WHEN THE HANGAR BROKE COMPROMISING THE STEERING AND CAUSING ME TO NEARLY CRASH. ACCORDING TO SUBARU OF AMERICA, THEY 'FIXED' THE PROBLEM WITH A RUST-PROOFING SPRAY, AND ARE DENYING ME ANY GOOD FAITH REPAIRS CITING THAT IT WAS ADDRESSED, DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT FAILED ANYWAYS AND SUBJECTED MYSELF AND OTHERS TO POTENTIAL SEVERE PERSONAL INJURY. AFTER MANY (NOT RETURNED) PHONE CALLS, THEY HAVE TOLD ME THEY WOULD LOOK AT IT (INCURRING 'ASSESSMENT FEES') AND THE WOMAN I SPOKE WITH TODAY FROM SUBARU OF AMERICA TOLD ME THEY WOULD OFFER MINIMAL IF ANY FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE ISSUE. ALL I WANT IS MY VEHICLE TO FUNCTION AS THE MANUFACTURER INTENDED, NOT FOR SOMEONE TO SLAP A BANDAID ON THE ISSUE, CALL IT 'FIXED' AND BASICALLY GIVE ME - A LOYAL CUSTOMER TO SUBARU - THE FINGER. THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE FOR A COMPANY TO BEHAVE IN THIS MANNER, ESPECIALLY FOR A PROBLEM THAT WAS CLEARLY INCORRECTLY ADDRESSED TO BEGIN WITH. MY CAR HAS BEEN SITTING FOR ALMOST 2 WEEKS AND IS NOT DRIVEABLE. I AM INCURRING INTENSE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND FINANCIAL BURDEN FROM NOT BEING ABLE TO UTILIZE MY VEHICLE TO CARRY OUT TASKS THAT ARE REQUIRED OF ME AS A MEDICAL STUDENT. I HAVE INVESTED SIGNIFICANT TIME AND ENERGY INTO THIS, ONLY FOR SOA TO FEED ME THE SAME LINE OF BS THAT THEY'RE NOT AT FAULT AND THEY'VE 'FULFILLED THEIR OBLIGATION' FOR THIS RECALL. ATTACHED IS A PICTURE OF THE AFFECTED CONTROL ARM (FRONT PASSENGER).

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-11-30
  • VIN: JF1GD29622G
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: STRONG SMELL OF FUEL UPON START-UP WHEN IN SUB-FREEZING CONDITIONS. IT HAS OCCURRED TWICE IN 2019, WHICH ARE THE ONLY RECENT TIMES IT HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO THOSE CONDITIONS. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS IN FEBRUARY, 2019. THE SECOND WAS IN NOVEMBER, 2019. RECALL 09V468000 APPLIES TO MY MODEL VEHICLE, BUT ONLY IN CERTAIN STATES. THE RECALL, THEREFORE, DOES NOT APPLY TO MY VIN, ALTHOUGH THE DESCRIPTION OF THE RECALL NOTICE APPEARS TO MATCH THE SYMPTOMS OF MY CAR. AFTER SPEAKING WITH SUBARU, THEY INDICATED THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE MY VIN IS NOT COVERED IN THE RECALL.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-08-10
  • VIN: JF1GG68592H
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: SAFETY RECALL: WVX34 I HAD THIS WORK DONE AT A DEALERSHIP. THEY DID A PUNCH TEST.THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS PASSED ON JULY 9, 2019 AND WERE UNDERCOATED AT 192630 MILES. TODAY AUGUST 10, 2019 THE PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL ARM BROKE WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MPH. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY GET THE VEHICLE HOME AND TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY WERE UNABLE TO TELL ME IF THIS WOULD BE COVERED OR I WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. I AM CONCERNED SUBARU'S ACTIONS REGARDING THIS ISSUE ARE INADEQUATE.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-03-01
  • VIN: JF1GG68502H
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: SUBARU IMPREZA OUTBACK SPORT 2002, PASSENGER LOWER CONTROL ARM HAD CORROSION BAD ENOUGH TO CAUSE COMPLETE SEPARATION AND FAILURE CAUSING LOSS OF VEHICLE STEERING CONTROL WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH. CONTACTED SUBARU OF AMERICA AND SUBARU DEALERSHIP, SUBARU WAS NOT WITHIN THE VIN NUMBERS SPECIFIED UNDER THE CURRENT RECALL TO REPAIR THIS IDENTICAL ISSUE OF CORROSION OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM. ALSO THE U FRAME BRACE WAS SO EXTREMELY CORRODED THAT IT CRUMBLED AND FELL APART SIMILAR TO THE CONTROL ARM CORROSION. OTHER DAMAGE DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE CONTROL ARM FAILURE INCLUDE, DAMAGE TO BODY AND FENDER WHEN TIRE WAS STUFFED BACKWARD INTO THE FENDER DURING THE FAILURE AT SPEED. DAMAGE TO TIRE, DAMAGE TO ANTI ROLL BAR END LINK, DAMAGE TO DRIVE AXLE AND DRIVE AXLE BOOTS AND DAMAGE TO SEAL AND HOUSING AT TRANSMISSION DIFFERENTIAL, DAMAGE TO LOWER BALL JOINT.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-05-05
  • VIN: JF1GD29682G
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL ARM BROKE INTO TWO PIECES CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS CAUSED THE RIGHT FROM TOF THE VEHICLE TO DROP DOWN, IT CAUSED THE TIRE TO CONTACT THE FENDER AT REAR OF WHEEL OPENING AND CAUSED THE FRONT WHEELS TO POINT IN TWO DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. THE OCCURRED ON A CITY STREET (LUCKILY) WHILE BACKING AND TURNING AFTER EXITING A DRIVEWAY. THERE IS A RECALL, BUT IT ALLOWED SUBARU TO "INSPECT" THE CONTROL ARM BACK IN 2011 AND NOT REPLACE IT, WHICH ALLOWED IT'S FAILURE ANYWAY AND SO WAS INEFFECTIVE.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-02-07
  • VIN: JF1GG29602G
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID 11V464000 (SUBARU SAFETY RECALL WVX-34) COVERS 2002-2007 IMPREZAS, AS WELL AS OTHER MODELS. THE SAFETY RECALL COVERS CARS REGISTERED IN 20 RUST BELT STATES. MY VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN REGISTERED IN THOSE STATES, SO IT IS TECHNICALLY NOT COVERED, BUT IT IS DRIVEN THERE REGULARLY SINCE WE LIVE ONLY A FEW MILES AWAY. SUBARU OF AMERICA DID NOT TREAT OR REPLACE MY LOWER CONTROL ARM SINCE IT TECHNICALLY DIDN'T MEET THE RECALL CRITERIA. THE CONTROL ARM BROKE DUE TO RUST WHILE DRIVING - CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WAS LUCKILY MAINTAINED AT TIME OF FAILURE. THE SAFETY RECALL STATES "THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY BREAK AT THE HANGER BRACKETS DUE TO CORROSION", WHICH IT DID. THE SAFETY COMPLAINT HERE IS THAT SURROUNDING STATES FOR SAFETY RECALLS THAT COVER SPECIFIC STATES. VEHICLES, WEATHER AND ROAD TREATMENTS DO NOT STOP AT STATES BORDERS. THE VEHICLE WAS EXPOSED TO THE SAME ROAD TREATMENTS AS VEHICLES IN THE NEIGHBORING STATES AND FAILED, AS PREDICTED BY SUBARU.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-10-30
  • VIN: JF1GD29602G
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: VERY STRONG SMELL OF RAW GASOLINE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND CABIN THAT WOULD BE CONSISTENT WITH SPILLED FUEL BUT THERE WASN'T ANY SPILLED IN EITHER LOCATION. THE SMELL IS STRONGEST WHILE DRIVING WITH HEAT OR A/C ON TO THE POINT THAT WINDOWS HAD TO BE OPENED BECAUSE THE FUMES WERE IRRITATING THE EYES. AFTER SPEAKING WITH A MECHANIC, WAS TOLD THAT A COMMON PROBLEM IS THE RUBBER FUEL LINES THAT RUN ALONG THE TOP OF THE ENGINE DRY ROT AND BREAK CAUSING RAW GASOLINE TO SPILL ONTO THE HOT ENGINE AND TURBOCHARGER POTENTIALLY CAUSING A FIRE. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE THE ENTIRE TIME I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE.

SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-11-04
  • VIN: JF1GG68502H
  • Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I BROUGHT MY SUBARU IMPREZA 2001 WAGON IN FOR OIL CHANGE INTO MY SUBARU SERVICE ON 11/4/2016. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRONT SUBFRAME WAS RUSTY AND THEY COULD STICK A SCREW DRIVER THROUGH A HOLE. I WAS ABLE TO LEAVE WITH THE CAR BUT THEY WERE CONCERNED FOR THE FUTURE AND RECOMMENDED REPAIRING IF WE ARE KEEPING THE CAR. I HAVE ALREADY HAD THE CONTROL ARM REPLACED BEFORE THE CONTROL ARM RECALL ON THIS MODEL DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST; LUCKILY IT BROKE IN A PARKING LOT AND NOT AT HIGH SPEED. THIS IS LOGICALLY THE SAME ISSUE WHERE THE FRONT SUBFRAME PART DID NOT GET TREATED WELL ENOUGH JUST LIKE THE CONTROL ARM THAT CAUSED THE RECALL. PLEASE MAKE SUBARU COVER THIS AS A RECALL. I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP THIS CAR FOR MORE YEARS TO COME, BUT THE COST OF THE SUBFRAME PART, THAT SHOULD NOT BE THIS RUSTED OUT, IS AS MUCH AS THE BLUE BOOK VALUE OF THE CAR. PLUS I SEARCHED UP "SUBFRAME" HERE ON THE SITE FOR SUBARUS FROM 2000 THROUGH 2005 AND FOUND 31 COMPLAINTS; AND THAT IS OBVIOUSLY PEOPLE THAT TOOK THE TIME TO COME TO THIS SITE. HOW MANY COMPLAINTS DOES IT TAKE TO HOLD A CAR COMPANY ACCOUNTABLE FOR A DEFECT THAT IS CLEARLY THE SAME ISSUE AS ANOTHER PART THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN RECALLED?

Negative 2002 Subaru Impreza car reviews

Although there have been some issues with the car, I have taken good care of it and have not driven it hard. Unfortunately, at 60,000 miles, the head gasket went and I had to take it to the shop for over heating problems for the next 9 months. However, Subaru provided me with a new engine block which was a great help. Currently, at 90,000 miles, there are some transmission problems and it needs 1st, 2nd, 3rd and reverse gears replaced which will cost $2300. Despite these issues, I am confident that the car still has a lot of life left in it. However, I have decided to sell it and purchase a Toyota, Nissan or Mazda. Thank you for your understanding.

This car is a great choice for a fun second car! It may not be suitable for everyday use, but it's definitely worth considering. While there is some turbo lag, it's not a major issue as long as you keep the revs above 4000. The car does have some understeer, and the side mirrors are a bit small, but overall it's a great choice. Additionally, I would recommend upgrading to better tires.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I've redone the motor (cylinder slap), rear suspension, and O2 sensor. Unfortunately, the radio seems to have stopped working. Also, I've noticed that the wheel wells tend to pack with snow quite easily and the tires go out of balance with even a little bit of dust. Just thought you should know!

I ordered my WRX from the dealership in 2000 when I first read it would be imported to the states. I have loved driving it for the last eight years, especially since I used to be a Mustang owner. Although it wasn't quite as fast in a straight line, it did everything else really well. After owning this car, I would highly recommend waiting a year before buying a new model. In the first year, I experienced some issues such as squeaky windows, thin paint, and a defective fuel rail system that had to be replaced twice. Unfortunately, the engine even blew at 119K, which was a real disappointment. I had to spend $5500 on a salvage long block to get it fixed. Now, the A/C compressor is about to go. However, most of the bugs were worked out by the middle of 2003. Overall, I would definitely buy it again, but I would wait until the second year of production.

The car had several issues from the start, including poor paint quality, inadequate electrical system, and consistent hesitation at 2,000 RPM. Despite the dealership's fantastic service, Subaru head office initially resisted taking action. However, I was able to secure a refund in the end. Currently, I am driving a 2003 model which drives well, but still has some issues such as poor quality paint, windshield wiper blades that freeze, inadequate heating system, poor design of rear window washer spray head, and a steering wheel that is not aligned parallel when driving straight.

I bought my WRX in October 2001 and it's still going strong with the original clutch and engine. I just took it in for a servicing and the compression was 150 across the board. A year ago, I upgraded to a VF 48 turbo, blue injectors, and a bigger fuel pump. The car is now a rocket and merging on the highway is a blast. That truck in the right lane who thinks he'll cut me off is in for a surprise! With an Accessport, the sky is really the limit with this gorgeous car. The next step may be doing a flex fuel setup with even bigger injectors/fuel pump. The thing you need to remember with this car is that the stock tune is garbage and often leads to check engine lights. But don't worry, you can eliminate these bugs and increase your enjoyment of the car exponentially by getting an aftermarket tune from a good tuner. A GOOD air/oil separator is also advisable to keep oil out of the intake. I also replaced the stock stereo with a 7-inch flat screen headunit and with Android Auto, I have full navigation and Bluetooth. The installation was so easy that even someone like me could do it. The only knocks on the car are that the trunk leaks annoyingly and the Subaru paint is poor, but you probably already knew that. All in all, it's been a pleasure to drive. I've had this car for 1/3 of my life and I really see no reason to get rid of it.

Seems like there are a lot of test drive reviews here, not owner reviews. This is a great balance of practicality and fun (erring on the fun side). It's exactly what I was hoping for. I just hope it proves to be reliable in the long run.

  3. Alexander Johns 2024-09-19

I've owned my Subaru for almost three years now, and I continue to adore it. As a petite, sporty woman, it has been an excellent fit for me. The size is just right - not too big, but spacious enough to accommodate multiple pairs of skis, snowboards, mountain bikes, and friends. While I have encountered a few issues, such as the front brakes malfunctioning after 18k, the dealership promptly replaced the rotors under warranty at no cost. Additionally, the clock stopped working, but it too was replaced under warranty.

  4. Michale Harber 2024-08-26

Brisk acceleration and great handling - that's all I wanted.

  5. Stefan Lowe 2024-08-26

I've had this car since June 2001 and it's been a blast every day. Although there are some minor downfalls, such as the turbo lag at low RPM's and a not-so-luxurious interior, it's still a comfortable and reliable car. In fact, it's the most fun car I've ever had the pleasure of driving. And for the price, it's definitely the best value for money.
