2001 Subaru Impreza problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 2001 Subaru Impreza problems

The 2001 Subaru Impreza is a popular vehicle, but like any car, it has its share of common problems. Here are some issues that owners have reported:

  • Engine Oil Leaks: Some 2001 Subaru Impreza owners have reported engine oil leaks, which can be caused by a loose control valve cover. Subaru UK issued a recall in late 2004 to address this issue, affecting about 1500 cars. If your car was affected, ensure that any necessary work has been done.
  • Brake and Suspension Parts: The 2001 Subaru Impreza is popular with trackday enthusiasts, and hard-driven examples may require frequent changes of brake and suspension parts. When buying a used car, it's essential to ask the seller about the car's history and usage to determine if any necessary repairs have been made.
  • Routine Maintenance: Some owners have reported that routine maintenance has been missed or done late, which can lead to issues with the car's reliability. When buying a used Subaru Impreza, it's essential to check the service history and ensure that all routine maintenance has been done on time.
  • Rear Wheel Bearings: The rear wheel bearings in the 2001 Subaru Impreza are known to be weak, and some owners have reported issues with them. If you're buying a used car, it's essential to check the rear wheel bearings for any signs of wear or damage.
  • Transmission Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the transmission, including slipping and difficulty shifting. If you're experiencing transmission issues, it's essential to have the car checked by a qualified mechanic to determine the cause and necessary repairs.

When buying a used 2001 Subaru Impreza, it's essential to do your research and thoroughly inspect the car before making a purchase. Check the service history, ask about the car's history and usage, and have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic to ensure that any necessary repairs have been made. By taking these steps, you can increase the likelihood of finding a reliable and well-maintained car.

  • VIN: JF1GC67501G

I DID NOT KNOW THERE WAS A SITE TO FILE THIS TYPE OF COMPLAINT.*AK I DRIVE A 2001 SUBARU IMPREZA 2.5RS. THE ABS SYSTEM SEEMS TO BE INCREDIBLY SENSITIVE TO SMALL BUMPS AND UNDULATIONS IN THE ROAD. IF THE CAR HITS A BUMP WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PRESSED, THE ABS SYSTEM BEGINS PUMPING THE BRAKE WHICH CAUSES, IN MY OPINION, LENGTHENED STOPPING DISTANCES AND A FEELING OF LACK OF CONTROL OVER THE CAR. THIS PROBLEM IS EASILY DUPLICATED.

WHEN I OPEN THE HOOD, I CAN HEAR A QUIET HIGH-PITCH NOISE WHEN KEY IS TURNED TO "START", AND THAT'S ALL. ALL THE ACCESSORIES, SUCH AS STEREO, RADAR DETECTOR, WORK FINE WHEN KEY IS IN "ON" POSITION. I HAVE TO HOLD DOWN THE OVERRIDE SWITCH TO START MY CAR. FURTHERMORE, THE REMOTE ENTRY/ANTI-THEFT DEVICE HAS BEEN COMPLETELY DISABLED. TECHNICIAN AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID THE "BRAIN" OF THE ALARM SYSTEM, OR THE CONTROL MODULE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT'S SIMPLY DEAD. *LA

I WILL INCLUDE 1 INCIDENT DATE BECAUSE THAT IS ALL YOU WILL ALLOW ME TO DO ON THE FORM. PROBLEM IS REPEATABLE AND HAPPENS OFTEN (2-3 TIMES A WEEK) I KNOW THIS IS NOT JUST MY CAR OR A PROBLEM RELATED TO ONLY MY CAR IT IS ALREADY KNOWN, SUBARU KNOWS OF PROBLEM. YET DOES NOT OFFER A SAFE SOLUTION. I ACTUALLY FOUND THIS OUT THE HARD WAY 2 MONTHS AFTER GETTING MY NEW CAR THE RS MODEL.NO INJURIES LUCKILY. FROM WHAT I HEAR FROM SUBARU CLUBS THIS HAPPENS WITH OTHER MODEL YEARS AS WELL. SUBARU OF AMERICA HAS BEEN VERY STUBBORN TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE. *NLM

THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS FROM WRX OWNERS OF THE SAME PROBLEM, AS WELL AS REPORTS OF BRAKE SHOES WEARING OUT BEFORE 5000 MILES AND GRINDING NOISES. Negative 2001 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Devon Pfannerstill 2024-07-25

Great car all around! It's sporty, has decent power, and drives strong. However, it's important to beware of the leaking head gasket, which can be VERY expensive to repair (3-4k). Additionally, the knock sensor tends to go out at least once. On the bright side, it drives superbly in snow and rain with great suspension and AWD, and the Limited Slip is definitely a plus.

  2. Demond Olson 2024-05-29

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Legacy wagon. It has been an amazing snow car for me, especially since I have to drive on twisty, hilly roads that are often covered in more than 12 inches of snow. I never even noticed the snow or rain! Plus, it's been great for carrying my Samoyed dog in the back with its dog gate. I was even able to fit large objects like doors with the door frame completely inside the car. It's always run smoothly and started up without any problems, and I've been able to go up to 95 on the highway with ease. And the best part? It has fantastic resale value! I bought it for 19.5 and after 3 years, I was able to sell it for 13.5 even with a slightly damaged bumper. Overall, I highly recommend the Legacy wagon as a reliable and versatile car. Let me know if you have any questions!

  3. Zakary VonRueden 2024-02-25

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Subaru. I've had it for 2 1/2 years and put 47,000 miles on it. The clutch was replaced under warranty at 30,000 miles due to chattering, especially in colder temperatures. Although I'm about to replace it again, I still think it's a great car. The gearing is very low, which makes it very responsive to gas pedal movement, but it can be a bit jerky in traffic. One thing I wish it had is a folding rear seat. However, the all-wheel drive is amazing and provides excellent traction in any weather condition. Despite my minor complaints, I'm definitely getting another Subaru for my next car. They offer unbeatable value!

Positive 2001 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Maxwell Daniel 2024-11-17

This car is the best car I have ever owned. It's safe in the rain and snow, fast, sexy, and smooth. I live in LA where all the 'nice' cars are, and every time I take her out, I get looks (the car, not me). I've had the car for almost two years now. The WRX may be faster, but it doesn't look half as nice.

  2. Elvis Windler 2024-10-25

Overall, the car is excellent. It's highly customizable, with lots of modifications possible. Plus, it's a real head-turner - other motorists can't help but admire its good looks. And when it comes to handling snowy roads, this car really shines.

  3. Imani Bode 2024-09-19

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car so far! Although it may not have the performance you were expecting based on its appearance, it sounds like you're really enjoying the leather seating and the comfort and quality of the materials. It's great to hear that it handles well, even in snow and ice - Subaru really does make a car for all seasons. If you're looking for a car that's fun to drive, fairly economical, great looking, and quality built, I would definitely recommend it. The only thing to keep in mind is that it doesn't have the turbo performance of some of the newer Subaru models, like the WRX and WRX Sti. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!

  4. Luciano Braun 2024-07-29

Congratulations on your Impreza L sedan purchase! It sounds like you made a great choice. As a first-time Subaru owner, you must be thrilled with your purchase. Even though some may consider it to be bottom-of-the-line, it still provides a fun and reliable driving experience. With over 52k miles on it already, it's great to hear that you have had no problems whatsoever. The ride is smooth and the engine is peppy, making it a joy to drive. The interior may be plain, but it is tasteful and the seats are comfortable for both front and rear passengers. Additionally, there is plenty of trunk space and decent leg room for passengers in the rear. Enjoy your Impreza L sedan and happy driving!

  5. Eliezer Weber 2024-07-28

This is the best car I have ever seen!
