1998 Subaru Impreza problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 1998 Subaru Impreza problems

The Subaru Impreza, particularly the 1998 model, is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. These issues span across various parts of the car, including the engine, airbags, and even the brakes.

One of the most prevalent issues is with the engine. The 1998 Impreza, like other older models, has been reported to consume more engine oil than normal.

Another common problem with the Subaru Impreza is related to the airbags. The car is one of the many models affected by the Takata airbag recall, which can cause the airbags to deploy with excessive force, potentially leading to injuries or fatalities. It is crucial to check if the vehicle has had the necessary recall work done to replace the affected airbags.

The 1998 Impreza's brakes are also known to have issues. The brakes on this model are seriously under-specified, which can lead to rapid wear and a long stopping distance.

Lastly, the 1998 Impreza is known to have problems with the check engine light illuminating due to various reasons, such as a faulty knock sensor or issues with spark plug wires and the ignition coil.

These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the Subaru Impreza, particularly the 1998 model. It is essential to thoroughly inspect any potential purchase and ensure that all necessary repairs and recalls have been addressed before making a decision.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-09-12
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: 98 SUBARU IMPREZA 2.5RS. I HAD THE HEAD GASKETS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY THE FIRST TIME . AROUND A YEAR AFTER THAT,THE CAR OVER HEATED AGAIN. I HAD IT TOWED TO A AUTO REPAIR SHOP THAT I WORKED AT AND HAD THEM TEST THE CAR TO SEE THE PROBLEM. IT WAS A BLOWN HEAD GASKET AGAIN. THEY DETERMINED THIS BY TESTING FOR ANY EMISSIONS IN THE COOLANT. THERE WAS ALSO A LARGE AMOUNT OF SLUDGE BUILD UP IN THE COOLANT RESERVOIR(OIL)AS WELL. SUBARU WOULD NOT WARRANTY THERE ORIGINAL WORK SO THE CAR SAT FOR A BIT BEFORE I COULD AFFORD TO HAVE IT FIXED. WHEN I SAVED UP SOME MONEY FOR THE REPAIR, I BROUGHT IT TO THE SUBARU DEALER TO HAVE THEM DO THE WORK ON IT. I WAS EXTREMELY UPSET WITH THE WORK THEY DID BUT GOT THE CAR BACK WITH A FUNCTIONAL ENGINE. NOT MORE THAN A YEAR AND A HALF LATER, THE SAME THING HAPPEN(OVERHEAT). AGAIN, I PULLED OVER RIGHT AWAY TO LIMIT ANY FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. AT THAT POINT, I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY HOME AND IT SAT FOR ABOUT A YEAR BEFORE THE BAD CHOICE TO REPAIR IT AGAIN. THIS TIME I SENT IT TO BOFFO AUTO REPAIR. THEY RECOMMENDED A NEW MOTOR BECAUSE THE LAST TIME THE "HEADS" HAD BEEN DONE, THEY MILLED THE HEADS SMOOTH AND NEW "HEADS" WERE NOT TO FAR OF THE PRICE OF A USED ENGINE. BOFFO FINALLY FOUND A USED ENGINE FOR MY CAR THAT APPARENTLY IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND. THE ENGINE HAD 32K ON IT AND WAS REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN CHECKED OVER AS A SAFE,RELIABLE MOTOR. AFTER SPENDING OVER $4000 THIS TIME AROUND, I HAD A WORKING CAR AGAIN. THE CAR CAME BACK TO ME NOT EVEN 3 MONTHS AGO. THE ENGINE OVER HEATED "AGAIN" THE OTHER DAY AND AGAIN I HAVE A HEAD GASKET LEAK(OIL INTO THE COOLANT). I HAVE BEEN LOOKING ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND IT SEEMS TO BE A BIG ONE ON THE 98 VEHICLE. I FOUND OUT THAT THEY ONLY MADE THAT MOTOR FOR THE MODEL YEAR 98 ONLY. WHY IS THIS? I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY A SUBARU EMPLOYEE BECAUSE OF THE HEAD GASKET PROBLEM. I NEED YOUR HELP. I HAVE CONTACTED AN ATTORNEY THIS MORNING AND WILL HAVE HIM GET IN TOUCH WITH SUBARU. *NM

FEAR THAT IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. CURRENT RECALL ON 99-01 MODELS FOR "COOLANT ADDITIVE". POOR HEAD GASKET DESIGN IS LEADING TO FAILURE... TWO WEEKS LATER, SAME SYMPTOMS (NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, "NO PWR" ON OBD II MONITOR), BUT AN HOUR LATER CAR STARTED FINE AND OBD II SHOWED NO PROBLEMS. TOOK TO MECHANIC WHO FOUND NOTHING WRONG. HAPPENED AGAIN A WEEK LATER, MECHANIC FINDS NOTHING. TWO WEEKS AFTER THAT, FAILED AGAIN, WOULD NOT START AFTER MANY DAYS AND STILL SAYS "NO PWR." TOWED TO MECHANIC, AND ONCE IT GOT TO SHOP, STARTED FINE -- MOVEMENT DURING TOWING CAUSED POWER TO BE RESTORED TO ECU. THUS, IT'S A SHORT IN THE POWER PATH THAT RUNS THE ECU. MECHANIC CANNOT FIND PROBLEM. MECHANIC DISMANTLED FUSEBOXES AND FINDS NO APPARENT SIGNS OF SHORT ANYWHERE. SAYS IT'S A "SUBARU BUG." COST TO DATE: APPOX. $2000, AND NOT YET FIXED.

Negative 1998 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Triston O'Conner 2024-10-11

After reading all of these reviews, I would like to share my experience with the car. It is important to keep in mind that this car requires regular maintenance and can be expensive to maintain. I purchased this car a year ago with only 60,000 miles on it and was initially pleased. However, after driving it for about 6,000 miles, I began to notice a burning oil smell. I took it to the mechanic and discovered severe oil leaking and axle problems. Unfortunately, oil leaks are common among Subarus, which was a major disappointment. I was not prepared to spend $1000 every six months or so. My mechanic suggested that it may go another 12 months before another oil leak occurs. I wish you the best of luck with your decision.

  2. Trevor O'Connell 2024-08-06

Subaru cars have become quite expensive to fix. I understand your frustration with the issues you've experienced with your three Subarus. Have you considered exploring other car brands that may better suit your needs? Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  3. Sebastian Gorczany 2024-07-27

Just a friendly heads up, it seems like there might be an issue with the rear bearings. I've had to replace both the left and right rear bearings three times on each side. I've brought my car to three different dealers - Walnut Creek, Carlson, and Stevens Creek - but unfortunately, none of them seemed to know what was going on. Despite this one issue, I've really enjoyed driving the car.

  4. Jasmin Wilderman 2024-02-02

Subaru cars have become quite expensive to fix. I have owned three and after around 76,000 miles, a lot had to be replaced such as the oil pump, clutch, and brakes. Unfortunately, I feel that Subaru has cut a lot of corners and there are better-built cars out there. This will most likely be my last Subaru.

Positive 1998 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Alan Kerluke 2024-11-28

Driving this car was a pleasure, and I had no problems with it. It was very fun to drive!

  2. Demarcus Keebler 2024-11-26

I really love my little Subaru! It's been a great first car for me. While it may not have a lot of horsepower under the hood, it handles just about anything I race against. I think it's a great car for a small family or even a single person like myself. I plan on keeping my Subaru for as long as possible, it's been so reliable! It takes turns on a dime and the AWD is especially nice in the rainy weather we have here in the Northwest. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a smaller vehicle that can handle well and is dependable.

  3. Alec Waters 2024-11-16

Hello! I love my car, but unfortunately, I bought it used and the manual was missing. Do you happen to know where I can find one to purchase? Thank you so much! - Steve Dunbar

  4. Maverick Aufderhar 2024-10-18

Great car! It handles snow and ice beautifully and I'm glad to hear that you've never had any maintenance problems. I see that you just had your first brake job done at 75,000 miles, which is great news!

  5. Garrett Bauch 2024-10-10

Your 97' Impreza sounds like a great car! Even though it's your first car and you don't have much to compare it to, it seems like it's been reliable for you. You bought it used in 2003 and have only had to replace the steering fluid container, which is impressive. It's always fun to drive a car that you love, and it sounds like you'll be enjoying your Impreza for many more years to come!
