2022 Hyundai Kona problems
The Hyundai Kona (Korean: 현대 코나) is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. The first-generation Kona debuted in June 2017 and the production version was revealed later that year. It is positioned between the Venue or Bayon and the Tucson in Hyundai crossover SUV line-up. The battery electric version called the Kona Electric (or Kona EV) was first launched in South Korea during the first half of 2018 and rolled out gradually worldwide afterwards.
Naming
The Kona is named after the western district of the island of Hawaiʻi. The company stated the name "reflects the lifestyle of modern customers", in line with its "progressive design" that it adopts. The Kona naming also continues Hyundai's tradition of naming crossover SUV models after famous travel destinations, including the Creta, Santa Fe, Tucson and Veracruz.
The vehicle is marketed in Portugal as the Hyundai Kauai, as Kona is too similar to cona, a slang word for the female genitalia in European Portuguese. It's also sold in Iceland where the word kona means woman in Icelandic. Like Kona, Kauai is a place in Hawaii. It is also Hawaiian for lady.
In China, the vehicle was sold as the Hyundai Encino.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-25
- VIN: KM8K53A38NU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I purchased this 2022 Kona used with 12,000 miles in April 2024. On 4 occasions it has failed to start. When starting the vehicle with push button I only heard a series of clicking. There was no other sound made while trying to start the car. My husband had a remote jumper and attached it to the battery as directed on the jumper, then pushed the start button. The vehicle started immediately. The vehicle then ran normally. I episode occurred after the vehicle sat while we were away for 2 weeks on vacation. Again, using the remote jumper, the vehicle started immediately. Another occasion, the vehicle was driven that day and when attempting to move the car from the driveway into the garage, it once again failed to start. Just a series of clicking sounds. Application of the remote jumper once again started the car immediately. On the 4 th occasion (XXX) I was stopped at a traffic light waiting for the right turn arrow to appear. It was raining hard. The vehicle cut off (as it normally does when idling while stopped) then the dashboard went dead. The safety flashers would not work nor could I restart the car. This time there was no sound or clicking. I exited the vehicle in heavy rain and traffic, got the remote jumper from the trunk, raised the hood in the rain and heavy traffic and proceeded to attach the jumper to the car battery. The car started immediately. This last occasion of the vehicle shutting down was extremely dangerous. As I stated it occurred in a heavy rain in a very congested and heavily traveled city road. Visibility was poor due to the weather and lack of safety flashers (Toledo, Ohio at the corner of [XXX] ). I was fearful standing outside the vehicle with so much traffic. I was blocking the right turn lane so people behind me were not happy. I am [XXX] and unable to push it to the side of road. I believe that intersection has a left turn lane, 2 straight lanes, and the right turn lane. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-05
- VIN: KM8K32AB0NU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: While driving on a freeway, the drain plug fell out, dumping all of the oil onto the road. The vehicle had been serviced by just one facility and I had only had this brand new vehicle for 7 months when this occurred. This incident put the driver, any passengers, and anyone on the road nearby at risk. The drain plug loss was verified by a Hyundai certified service facility and then I was asked to tow it to the Hyundai certified facility that performed all of the services. I was told that Hyundai Motor America sent representatives to inspect the vehicle at both facilities along with the service staff at each facility. I have not been informed of anyone else inspecting the vehicle such as law enforcement or insurance representatives. There were no warning lamps or messages or symptoms prior to the drain plug falling out. There was no evidence of any oil leak, either. There were warning lamps immediately afterward. Blue link sent me a message as soon as the vehicle was turned back on after being turned off. The message said "a possible condition with your engine control system has been detected with your 2022 Hyundai Kona..." My 2022 Hyundai Kona is still sitting at the Hyundai certified repair facility over two years later. I had to hire a lawyer to try to get this situation rectified. No one wants to accept the responsibility for the drain plug falling out of my vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-12
- VIN: KM8K2CAB4NU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My Check Engine light came on and stayed steady (not blinking). The Cause for it is Unknown to me. I took it to the Dealership and they scheduled me to bring it in 3 days later, 3/12/24, to determine if it was something simple or if would take up to a couple days to fix. They assured me that if the light remained steady, I would be fine to drive the car. If it began blinking, then bring it back in. If the fix would take a day or more, they don't do loaner cars so I'd have to rent one (no cars to borrow and Ubers don't take wheelchairs). Approximately an hour after I arrived on 3/12 (I had to wait for my car), they gave me my car back. They had to order a part that was on back order that could take weeks or months to arrive. The part had something to do with preventing the engine from overheating, but I was not to worry so long as the Check Engine light stayed steady. They then asked how many miles I typically drove each day, "just around town, right?" I answered, usually, but that I was currently taking medical treatments for the next two weeks which involved around 70 miles roundtrip plus my usual daily miles. The Service person winced at that. They then told me that if the car overheated, to not worry, just pull over until it cooled off, and if it didn't, just use the Roadside Assistance service, then bring the car to the Dealership and they'll give me a loaner car (?!?) until my car could be repaired. A bit in shock, I left. After thinking about it, I find the Dealership's handling suspicious. 1) They didn't give me any paperwork. In all previous interactions, they've given me paperwork even if I've only had my fluids topped up. 2) If a back ordered part could take up to months to come in, it seems most likely to me that the scarcity is due to huge number of customers needing the part, not a supply-chain issue. I am disabled and in a wheelchair, so need my car to take care of myself. I hope everything is actually okay. If not, please help.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Summary: Horn stopped working. Fuses are good.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-18
- VIN: KM8K6CAB2NU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Horn fails in very cold weather. When the horn is depressed/pushed down on, no sound is produced. The first and second incident caused it to stop working completely. During the THIRD incident, repeated pressing of the horn would eventually produce a weak sound that would eventually grow louder. This compromises safety because the horn cannot be counted on to alert others to imminent possible danger/collision. The dealer confirmed it twice and replaced the horn twice. The first incident was remedied by replacing the horn fuse. The vehicle gave absolutely no warning or symptoms that the horn was going to fail to produce any sound. Incident dates: 12/25/2022, 02/26/2023, and 01/18/2024

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-04
- VIN: KM8K3CA30NU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: As I was backing out of my driveway, I noticed my camera started flashing a green screen and a message appeared intermittently with the flashing green screen saying ‘no camera signal try again later. This lasted the entire time I was backing up including once I shifted into drive then it disappeared. I feel that this is a safety risk to others who may be walking or driving by me if I am unable to use the camera. Clearly I don’t rely completely on the back up camera as I still tend to look at my surroundings as I back up. I am not even certain if someone was behind me if the warning would even work when the camera is acting up. I have not reported the problem to the dealer yet but I will first thing in the morning. The vehicle has not been inspected yet. The warning messages are described in the first paragraph. Today is first time this has happened. I have a video of this but was not able to attach it.
POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-13
- VIN: KM8K5CA34NU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I was driving up an incline when I overheated, causing smoke to come out of the transmission case. The vehicle suddenly stopped in the middle of the road, which could have caused an accident or fire. Regarding the transmission, I opened the hood to let the vehicle cool down for an hour.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-13
- VIN: KM8K6CAB2NU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The brakes began feeling less effective the day before because the car crept forward at a light but the driver thought they may have just eased off the brake pedal. The next day during a 45-minute drive to work the brakes felt more ineffective and a dash display warned "Low brake fluid". The Parking brake light was NOT on while driving. Drove the car from work to the local Hyundai dealer in Alexandria, VA a mile away. The dealer refused to look at car at all and said to come back in 18 days. The dealer said no loaner cars were available. Drove the car back to work. On the way home the Parking brake light came on. Got home and saw the Owners Manual says to park the car and not drive it when the Parking Brake light comes on while the parking brake is released. Checked the brake reservoir and it was completely empty. The brake pedal went to floor and the only way to stop the car was to use the Parking Brake. The reservoir was refilled but all fluid was gone in a few hours of driving. The car was towed ten days later to the same dealer after a manager at the dealership got involved. The tow truck driver had to use the parking brake to drive the car out of the parking garage. The dealer advised the problem was a faulty caliper. The Owners Manual claims the car has a "dual diagonal" braking system as required by law but somehow a single leaking caliper resulted in a COMPLETE loss of pedal braking and ALL brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir in a short period of time. Had this happened on a highway instead of city streets this could have been a fatal. THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A "SPLIT" RESERVOIR. It has a separator but the "wall" does NOT go all the way to the top of the reservoir. I believe that when the brakes were used the fluid splashed from the "good" half to the leaking half because the reservoir is not 100% physically separate for the two sets of brakes.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-07
- VIN: KM8KH3AC9NU
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: Pirelli P Zero 235 / 40 R19 96Y Purchased a 2022 Hyundai Kona N on 7/23/22. At 8ooo miles all 4 tires are cracking on side wall and tread area. Hyundai said those tires are not to be driven on if the outside temperature is 40 degrees or lower. We currently live in Joplin Missouri. When we purchased the vehicle we were not informed about the situation with the tires and temperature. The warranty on the Hyundai website stated the tires should last for 30,000 miles. All 4 tires need to be replaced, if we knew about this issue we would have made arrangements, prior to the purchase, to have different tires placed on the vehicle. We feel that we have been taken advantage of due to the lack of information on Hyundai’s part. On 4/7/23 I contacted Hyundai and was told to take the vehicle to a Hyundai dealer and have the tires inspected. On 4/10/23 we took the vehicle to the Hyundai dealer and they inspected the tires and recommended that they be replaced and they would send a complaint to Hyundai. The service manager at Fletcher Hyundai, Zeb Nageotte 417-434-1601, said he has never seen anything like that before in that little time.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-20
- VIN: KM8K5CA30NU
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: The adaptive cruise control does not engage in a timely fashion when activated. The speed reduces 8-12 mph before it kicks in. Speed always decreases 5 to. 21 mph on every hill. This inconsistency causes traffic to bunch around me. The dealership says nothing can be done to fix the problem. This problem is so frustrating and dangerous that I no longer use the feature.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-13
- VIN: KM8K62AB8NU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My daughter left our house in our 2022 Hyundai Kona on Friday, 1/13/23, to head back to college which is 5 hours from home. A little more than an hour down the road after leaving our house, she said that the car started sounding strange, so she called her mother. At this time, she was on a two lane country road with no safe options or areas to pull over. My wife advised my daughter to continue driving until she found a safe place to pull over. As she continued onwards, she came to a stop sign in the countryside and the car died on her. She restarted it and was able to continue her trip. Several miles later a light came on, but she was still not to a safe area. By the time she got to a safe place, other lights had come on, and the car died in the parking lot. The car would not restart so we called a tow truck to take the Kona to the nearest Hyundai dealership which is where it sits today. Upon inspection, the Hyundai dealership discovered that the drain plug was missing from the oil pan which caused the oil to drain and ultimately led to catastrophic engine failure. The engine needs to be replaced at a quote of $9753.08. The Kona’s last oil change was on 10/19/22 at 8,630 miles and was done a third party oil change facility. The mileage on the Kona when delivered to the repairing Hyundai dealership is 13,775. No engine lights or oil change needed indicators were on before our daughter began her trip on 1/13/23. I contend that this is a known issue with Hyundai engines based off of internet research that indicates that the NHTSA is actively investigating this exact issue of the drain plug falling out and causing catastrophic engine failure. This situation is a safety issue because the engine could have seized while in motion on a two-lane country road causing a wreck.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-14
- VIN: KM8K33A3XNU

Thankfully I was driving slow through a road in our parking lot and there were no cars behind me. It has only happened once so far. Obviously it startled me and made me wonder how safe the car is to drive. I haven't said anything to the dealer, but plan to when I go in for yearly maintenance in a week. There were no warning lights or symptoms prior to this happening.

Negative 2022 Hyundai Kona car reviews
Positive 2022 Hyundai Kona car reviews

I bought my 2022 Kona in June 2022 and absolutely loved it. The gas mileage is fantastic! On day 2 of having the car, we ended up in Gettysburg and were initially speeding because we had never experienced such a quiet car before. However, we soon discovered that the cruise control is smarter than us and will actually keep the right distance between you and the car in front. The heat, AC, cruise control, and lane assist were all great, and the trunk space was nice. It even fit my young nieces nicely in the back. Now, you may be wondering why I'm using past tense and why this is marked as a safety review. Well, on 09/09/23, myself, my partner, my best friend, and her daughter (one of my younger nieces) were in an accident. We were T-boned on the passenger side by a truck on a rainy night. I was in the passenger seat, and my niece was in the back passenger seat, with my partner driving and my best friend in the back driver's side. This was not a low-speed impact and bent in most of the passenger side. However, thanks to the three airbags that deployed and protected me, and the one that protected my niece, we came out relatively unscathed. I got whiplash and a concussion, my niece got whiplash but is otherwise fine, my best friend got whiplash and a concussion, and my partner just had a bruised wrist. Without those airbags, I don't think we would be here in one piece considering the hit the car took. Overall, the safety features on this car are fantastic, and if I had to go through that again, I would choose another Kona (although I would rather not get T-boned again).

I recently rented a Kona to try out as a potential small SUV purchase. Overall, I was impressed with the vehicle. The size is perfect for me - not too big like my old Ford Edge, but still feels sturdy on the highway. The handling is also great, with a smooth ride and easy maneuverability in the city. Comfort-wise, I had no complaints during my 5-hour drive. However, I did notice some visibility issues, particularly with the large black rectangle on the windshield behind the rearview mirror and the blind spot behind the passenger seats. While the technology helps, I would prefer better visibility to begin with. Unfortunately, I did experience some issues with the plastic string holder for the trunk cover breaking the first time I opened the trunk. It doesn't look like an easy fix, which makes me wonder about potential future issues. Overall, I would recommend the Kona for its size, handling, and comfort, but caution potential buyers about the visibility and potential for issues with plastic parts.

Loving your new Kona! It sounds like you're really enjoying the smooth ride and great gas mileage. It's impressive that you're getting 27-33 miles to the gallon around town, especially with the recent rise in gas prices. Keep up the good work!
-
I'm so glad to hear that you love this car!

Fun to drive! It handles well, has great acceleration, and boasts excellent safety features.

We've been driving The Kona Limited 2022 AWD for about 8 months now, after trading in our larger SUV. I'm really impressed with the variety of features available on the limited model, especially the safety and tracking features that provide additional peace of mind when my teenager is driving it. Lane departure, emergency braking, and attention warnings are all very helpful. The ability to monitor location and speed via the app is also a great feature. However, there are a few downsides to this car. The leather seats are quite fragile and we've already had two holes appear under normal use. Additionally, the car's performance is a bit lackluster despite having a 1.4L turbo engine. It doesn't feel as robust as my VW Jetta, for example.

My previous vehicle was a Honda cr-v so I had a lot of space inside. However, this car feels quite cramped and the roof is very low. I wish I had purchased another cr-v instead.

After reading numerous reviews and watching several videos on the popular site, I had high expectations for the Kona N. I was hoping for a performance similar to the VW Golf GTI, but with a more spacious interior. When I saw the white Kona N at a local dealership in mid-February 2022, I immediately took it for a test drive. The size was perfect for me, larger than a standard hatchback but not as big as a compact SUV like the Sportage. I was aware that the user interface for setting up the custom settings was complicated, so I read up on it beforehand. I wanted to ensure that the suspension setting was in the softest mode, which is the I couldn't help but notice that the car felt quite bouncy on the road, even on a smooth surface. Despite having the suspension set to the softest setting, it still felt like there was air between the tire and the road. It was a strange sensation that I had never experienced before. I double-checked to make sure that the driving mode was set to Custom1 and the suspension was on 'normal'. Unfortunately, I don't think I would enjoy driving this car for everyday use, as the bouncing would become quite tiresome. Additionally, I was surprised to find that the car didn't feel as quick as I expected it to be. Although the write-ups claim that it can do 0-60 in the low 5-second range, it felt more like 7 seconds to me. I tried accelerating several times, but it just didn't feel like it had the power to do so. I had the engine setting on sport+ and was in manual shift mode, but it still felt slow. I didn't play around with the launch control, as I wasn't interested in that. Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the car's performance. It was a bit strange that despite the acceleration being a disappointment and the limited slip differential, the front wheels spun and hopped a little bit each time I tried to accelerate hard. This was unexpected given the poor acceleration, and it shouldn't have happened at all. However, I realized that the stiff suspension was the main culprit. When the weight of the vehicle shifts to the rear during acceleration, the front end becomes lighter, causing the spring to push the front of the chassis higher. If the front suspension stiffness is properly matched to the vehicle, the wheels will remain in contact with the road even as the front end gets light. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case with this car, and I had to think for a little bit about the physics and the suspension before it dawned on me what was happening. I realized that the front wheels lose traction when encountering a mild bump in the road, causing the wheels and the chassis to get pitched up together. As soon as the bump is gone, there is no longer sufficient contact force between the tire and the road surface. The road I was on was a very good road, very flat and level, with no bumps that I ordinarily notice, and with a good surface. It's clear that the suspension on this car is excessively stiff, causing the front wheels to lose traction when trying to accelerate on any road surface that isn't absolutely perfect. This is a major flaw of this car. Please don't tell me that this is how it should be because it is a 'track car'. Even if you want to think of it that way, the same problem is going to be an even bigger issue on a track than it was for me on a few very good stretches of ordinary road. It wouldn't make sense to call it a track car because it isn't anywhere near as quick as people are claiming it to be. The Kona N has potential, but it isn't living up to it. The suspension is very stiff, which can cause the front wheels to spin at the drop of a hat on any road that isn't absolutely perfect. I don't understand how a manufacturer could release a car like this, although, we are talking about Hyundai. They decided to make an 'N' version of the Kona, like they did with the Veloster. They rushed into it and they didn't get it quite right. It is a good-looking subcompact SUV with a lot of things going for it, but it is let down by some problems with engine performance and a suspension that is way stiffer than it should be. Maybe in another year or two, they'll figure out what is wrong with the engine and change the suspension. I won't hold my breath.

The LED headlights are extremely bright, which can be a bit overwhelming. Although they are supposed to adjust when the light sensor detects oncoming headlights in 'auto' mode, they do not always work as expected. Additionally, the delivery of power at the low end of the spectrum is not as smooth as one would expect, making it feel more like a 135-bhp engine rather than a 195-bhp engine at lower speeds. The engine can also feel a little rough and loud. While stopped at red lights, the engine automatically restarts when the foot is taken off the brake to save gas. However, this does not always happen predictably, so prospective buyers should familiarize themselves with the '7-speed manual transmission with dual-clutch' before buying. The dashboard display, including the speedometer, tachometer, and gas gauge, are LED, but unfortunately, there is an annoying tendency for the display to blink between brighter and dimmer when the light sensor detects changes, such as on a cloudy day, which can be very distracting. There is no way to shut it off, and at night, the dash display cannot be made fully dark, although the flatscreen 'infotainment' screen can be fully darkened. Despite some over-engineered aspects that do not work well, the car has many good qualities. It is a good car for those who prefer everything to be done automatically or for those who are consistently unconscious. I made a mistake when buying this car, but it may be a great fit for someone who values these features. Overall, the Kona has received many positive reviews, so it's worth considering for those in the market for a new car.

I have owned both a non-turbo and turbo Hyundai Veloster, and I must say that the 201 HP turbo is quite lightweight and fairly quick. The leather seats are fantastic, and the interior is much better designed with enough padding to not feel cheap. However, I was disappointed with the discontinued Veloster N and the soon-to-be-released Kona N. The focus seems to be solely on the engine, which at 275 HP, is priced higher than other cars with more horsepower. The Kona N, in particular, was a letdown with its cheap plastic and non-leather seats. The interior design was not improved at all. The car's pricing during the COVID era is outlandish and will likely lead to its downfall. I would recommend spending your money on something else that won't depreciate as much as the Veloster N or Kona N.
