Scion Xb 2008 problems
The Scion xB is a compact car (subcompact car in its first generation) made by Scion, a now-defunct fully owned division of Toyota, for the United States market. It is a box-shaped, 5-door hatchback.
First generation (XP30; 2003)
The first-generation xB was a lightly modified and rebadged version of the Japanese-market subcompact Toyota bB. It was a small hatchback based on the Toyota Echo/Yaris platform. The xB was one of two models in the lineup of Toyota's US-exclusive Scion division present at the brand's 2003 launch, the other being the xA, based on the Toyota ist. The car proved to be unexpectedly popular with senior drivers.
First-generation xB vs. first-generation bB
Only the first-generation models for both the xB and bB are related. Second-generation models are based upon different platforms.
To create the first-generation xB, the bB was modified from right- to left-hand drive, the front passenger area was also changed significantly with the bB's front bench seat replaced with bucket seats and the column-mounted shifter changed to a floor-mounted shifter.
The available drivetrains also differed. The bB was available with either the 1.3 L I4 2NZ-FE engine or the 1.5 L 1NZ-FE, mated exclusively to a 4-speed automatic transmission with available all wheel drive. The xB was only available with the 1NZ-FE that produced 108 hp (81 kW) and 105 lb⋅ft (142 N⋅m) in US spec, but offered both a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission. All-wheel drive was not offered on the xB.
The Toyota bB was equipped with a compact spare tire under the floor of the luggage area. On the Scion xB, a compact spare tire was stored under the left side of a raised rear cargo floor. Since the spare tire raised the cargo floor by several inches, a storage bin was added to the right of the spare tire to reclaim some of the lost storage space. A jack was stored under the driver's seat of the xB.
The Toyota bB had a pull-out storage tray under the passenger seat that the xB lacks.
The bB went on sale in February 2000, whereas the xB went on sale in June 2003 for the 2004 model year. Sales of the first-generation bB ended in December 2005, whereas the first-generation xB ended sales in June 2007.

I HAD THE 100,000 MILE SERVICE COMPLETED ON 8/10/18 AND NOTICED I HAD TO ADD ADDITIONAL OIL TO THE ENGINE SINCE THEN, APPROXIMATELY 3 TO 4 QUARTS. I HAVE CONSISTENTLY BEEN TAKING MY SCION TO TOYOTA FOR REGULAR SERVICES AND NEVER WAS IT REPORTED TO ME. HAD I KNOWN EXCESSIVE OIL WAS AN ISSUE, I WOULD HAVE BEEN ALERTED TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE OIL LEVEL IN MY CAR. SINCE THE OIL LIGHT NEVER WENT OFF, I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG MY CAR HAS BEEN NEEDING MORE OIL.

I WAS AWARE THAT I WAS ABIDING BY THE SPEED LIMIT, GOING AROUND 25-30 MILES, BECAUSE I HAD JUST LEFT A STOPPED TRAFFIC LIGHT AND WAS HEADING INTO SCHOOL ZONE THAT HAD A FLASHING WARNING LIGHT. ANOTHER DRIVER, DRIVING SOUTH BOUND ON A CROSS STREET OF LIVE OAK STREET, RAN THE STOP SIGN AT HIGH SPEED AND CRASHED INTO ME ON THE DRIVERS' SIDE OF THE CAR. I HAD SEEN THE CAR COMING AND TRIED TO SWERVE AWAY TO THE RIGHT TO NOT HIT HER BUT SHE WAS GOING SO FAST I COULD NOT AVOID HER. THE OTHER DRIVER ADMITTED IT WAS HER FAULT BOTH TO MYSELF, THE POLICE OFFICER WHO ARRIVED ON THE SCENE AND IN THE ACCIDENT REPORT. THE OTHER DRIVERS INSURANCE HAS CLAIMED FULL LIABILITY TO THE ACCIDENT. THE AIRBAG IN MY CAR, THE 2008 SCION XB, DID NOT DEPLOY AT ALL. AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE DOCUMENTATION, IT WAS A DIRECT HIT TO THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR AND WAS EXTENSIVE. THE DAMAGE WAS SO EXTENSIVE I COULD NOT OPEN THE DOOR AND HAD TO GET OUT OF THE CAR ON THE OTHER SIDE. IF I HAD NOT BEEN WEARING MY SEAT BELT, I WOULD HAVE BEEN SEVERALLY INJURED. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY I DID HAVE TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL FOR AN EXAMINATION BUT WAS CLEARED THAT I HAD NOT SUFFERED ANY MAJOR TRAUMA TO THE HEAD OR NECK.

- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. The power window master switch assemblies in some of these vehicles were built using a less precise process for lubricating the internal components of the switch assemblies. Irregularities in this lubrication process may cause the power window master switch assemblies to malfunction and overheat.
- Consequence: If the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will inspect the switch and apply a special grease that inhibits heat build up or replace any switch damaged by the defect, free of charge. Toyota owners that experience a problem with a switch should not attempt to make repairs, but should contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331. General Motors will contact the Pontiac Vibe owners affected by this recall and GM dealers will inspect and repair switches as necessary. The Scion name was once new, edgy, and had something for everyone. However, like modern bands, a few changes here and there can alter the meaning of the name. For instance, the old xB was great with a small engine and plenty of room. Although a bigger engine would have been nice, fuel mileage for space was the priority. Unfortunately, the image was changed, and a bigger engine and chassis were added. As a result, the car is no longer what it used to be. Toyota, or rather Scion, has taken themselves out of the market that the Honda Fit now dominates. The xD is no better and looks too much like the Fit, which kills any edge it had.

After driving 13,700 miles in a year, I am happy to report that there have been no major issues with my nautical blue car with a 5-speed transmission. The car runs great and the iPod hookup works well. I have found the power to be good, although there is a minor issue with the clutch. As someone who has owned 7 cars with a clutch, I still feel a bit uncomfortable with it as it feels like it sticks or is slow to release. Additionally, the radio tuner knob keeps falling off, which is a minor issue. On the bright side, I am getting 30-32 miles per gallon on regular gas and the brakes and steering are excellent. The radio is fantastic and the headlights are exceptional at night. The interior lighting is great and the back seat undershelfs are a nice touch. The car can comfortably seat 5 adults without any issues and the side view mirrors with lights are a great feature. The horn is very sensitive, but the steering wheel radio controls are easy to operate.

This vehicle is a significant improvement from the previous generation. The xB handles well and feels very solid overall. Although the suspension could be better, as you may feel every speed bump or rough road, it is still a comfortable ride. While the fuel economy may not be the best, it was not the main focus of this car's design. One of the best things about this car is how spacious it is, which makes driving it a joy. The cluster gauges in the center may seem unusual at first, but you can easily adjust to them. The sound system in the car is also very impressive. Overall, this is a really great vehicle that showcases the quality of Toyota's engineering.

I've owned my 08 xb for just over 2 years now and have put approximately 75,000 miles on it. I'm happy to report that I haven't had a single issue with it. The car has plenty of power and according to the dash, my average mpg is currently at 29.8. I do a lot of highway driving at around 73mph, and when I was driving at around 68mph on these trips, I would get around 31mpg. I absolutely love this car! It holds all of my camping gear and even my large dog. The only thing I would change is the skinny armrest. It would be great if it were a bit wider!

Everything is great on this car! The only thing I regret is not getting the entertainment system installed. I wish I had opted for the GPS navigation system and the flatscreen seat monitors for the back seats. The FM tuner is the only issue I have encountered, as it makes distinct clicking and static noises every once in a while. I took it back to the dealer, but they said that all 08 Scion xBs do that. They suggested that I call the corporate office and file a case if I want it fixed.

The consumer ratings were favorable, but unfortunately, my personal experience with the car did not meet my expectations. The driver's seat was uncomfortable and unstable, causing me to feel like I was sitting on an underinflated balloon. The suspension was too soft, making the car jump with even the slightest bump on the road. The ride was quite punishing, and I believe that Toyota should recall the car due to the lack of suspension. It would be beneficial for Toyota to focus on balancing comfort and safety rather than selling accessories. I do not wish to purchase a firmer lowering kit for better suspension. It is disappointing that Toyota only offers one color of fabric for the seats. I have been driving this car for almost three months, and it is already rattling.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I noticed some issues with the transmission and jerking after only 3 months of driving it out of the showroom. Additionally, I've noticed that it uses about 3 quarts of oil per oil change at 70k miles. I'm currently working with the dealer on an oil consumption test, but they've told me that this level of oil usage is normal. However, one of the mechanics mentioned that they've been having a lot of problems with this engine, which is in the later models of Corolla and Camry. Just wanted to share my experience with you. The 2008 Scion Xb engine froze at 70,000K, despite being within the warranty period of 60,000 or 5 years. Despite no warning lights and the oil being fine, this experience has led me to advise against purchasing this car. Additionally, the automatic only gets 20 MPG, making it less fuel-efficient than other options available on the market.

In 6/2008, when gas prices spiked to $4 per gallon, we made the decision to purchase a new, efficient car. Unfortunately, our experience has not been as positive as we had hoped. We have had issues with a spongy brake pedal and a blown transmission at 22000 miles, which was fortunately fixed under warranty. Additionally, the car does not stop well in snow. To make matters worse, the car burns 2.5 quarts of oil every 5000 miles, which Toyota's engineers say is acceptable, but we find unacceptable. Despite our frustration, we appreciate the dealer and Corp. Toyota's efforts to address the issue. We are currently paying $400 per month plus insurance for a car that we do not drive, which is disappointing. While we are unlikely to purchase a Toyota again, we hope that our experience can help inform others in their car-buying decisions.
