The Scion xB is a compact car (subcompact car in its first generation) made by Scion, a now-defunct fully owned division of Toyota, for the United States market. It is a box-shaped, 5-door hatchback.
First generation (XP30; 2003)
The first-generation xB was a lightly modified and rebadged version of the Japanese-market subcompact Toyota bB. It was a small hatchback based on the Toyota Echo/Yaris platform. The xB was one of two models in the lineup of Toyota's US-exclusive Scion division present at the brand's 2003 launch, the other being the xA, based on the Toyota ist. The car proved to be unexpectedly popular with senior drivers.
First-generation xB vs. first-generation bB
Only the first-generation models for both the xB and bB are related. Second-generation models are based upon different platforms.
To create the first-generation xB, the bB was modified from right- to left-hand drive, the front passenger area was also changed significantly with the bB's front bench seat replaced with bucket seats and the column-mounted shifter changed to a floor-mounted shifter.
The available drivetrains also differed. The bB was available with either the 1.3 L I4 2NZ-FE engine or the 1.5 L 1NZ-FE, mated exclusively to a 4-speed automatic transmission with available all wheel drive. The xB was only available with the 1NZ-FE that produced 108 hp (81 kW) and 105 lb⋅ft (142 N⋅m) in US spec, but offered both a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission. All-wheel drive was not offered on the xB.
The Toyota bB was equipped with a compact spare tire under the floor of the luggage area. On the Scion xB, a compact spare tire was stored under the left side of a raised rear cargo floor. Since the spare tire raised the cargo floor by several inches, a storage bin was added to the right of the spare tire to reclaim some of the lost storage space. A jack was stored under the driver's seat of the xB.
The Toyota bB had a pull-out storage tray under the passenger seat that the xB lacks.
The bB went on sale in February 2000, whereas the xB went on sale in June 2003 for the 2004 model year. Sales of the first-generation bB ended in December 2005, whereas the first-generation xB ended sales in June 2007.

- Summary: My Scion XB has a set of dealer installed TRD springs front and rear. The springs in the rear have rusted to the point where I question their resistance to breaking and thus the safety of the car when turning a corner. The springs came from the factory with a coating that has quickly worn off an exposed the bare, untreated metal to excessive rust and corrosion. If one of these springs breaks while driving, then the car could be difficult to control and result in a wreck.

- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. The recall began November 20, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's numbers for this recall are J0A, J0B, and J0C. - Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the switch, applying a lubricant if no abnormality is found. I traded my old car for this one through the cash for clunkers program. So far, the car handles great, but the gas mileage is just okay and the ride is good only if there are less than two people in it. I miss some of the options that were in my old car, such as programmable wipers, lighted ignition light, and auto headlight shutoff. It seems like this car is meant to be rebuilt, but after adding a few options, you end up spending as much as a well-equipped Honda Accord EX. I don't think this car is a great bargain for the new young generation. It seems more like a great marketing idea on behalf of Toyota. Perhaps Toyota could add more value to their option closet.

The xB is a versatile car that can cater to a wide range of needs. It offers ample space for families with its 69 cubic feet of cargo space and the ability to strap in grandkids. Even as a baby-boomer, I find the xB to be a perfect fit for my lifestyle. Its compact size of 167 inches and tight 34.8 ft turning radius make it a breeze to park in any situation, especially in cities like San Francisco. The 2.4 liter 4 cyl engine from the Camry provides plenty of power when needed, while still offering better gas mileage than my previous Toyota Avalon or aging 4-Runner. Additionally, getting in and out of the xB is a breeze, whether you're sitting in the front or back seat. Overall, the xB is a great choice for anyone looking for a practical and versatile car.

I've only been driving my Super White XB for two days, but I'm already loving the way it handles. The center gauges aren't really an issue, and while the steering wheel isn't telescopic, the driver's seat has a height adjustment, so it shouldn't be a problem. The radio sounds great, and the A/C is excellent. The only downside is that it's a little noisy when accelerating, but that's to be expected with a 4 cylinder vehicle. Overall, it's a fantastic car for the price, with lots of space and a roomy interior. It's especially great if you have dogs!

So glad I chose the Scion XB! It's been an absolute joy to drive. The updated exterior is a huge improvement over the previous model. I decided to trade in my 2008 4runner while it still had some equity. Since I commute 60 miles per day, the Scion XB's MPG was a major selling point for me. I was also looking for a car with extra space, and the Scion XB definitely delivers. At first, I wasn't sure about the car, but after driving it, I'm absolutely in love!!! I can't speak to how well the automatic would accelerate, but the manual is an absolute blast.

I bought my 2010 xB in August 2009 and have since driven almost 35,000 miles. This includes a daily commute of over 30 miles each way, as well as longer trips of 250 miles and one of about 1,000 miles. I'm happy to report that everything has been just as I expected, which is great news. I average about 27 MPG and can get over 30 in the right conditions. The car is comfortable and has all the necessary features as standard. The cargo space is impressive for a car of its size, and it's much roomier on the inside than it appears from the outside. Best of all, it's incredibly reliable. I've only had to take it to the dealer once, and it turned out that the burning smell was caused by a plastic bag caught on the muffler. :)

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a recent experience I had with my car. Overall, I've been pretty happy with it, but this week I ran into a bit of trouble. While driving to Vegas, the car suddenly came out of gear and the check engine and oil lights came on. I was able to coast to the side of the road and turn the car off for a minute. Luckily, it started right back up. I took it to the dealer and they cleared the codes, but we're still in the process of figuring out what went wrong. I thought potential buyers might be interested in hearing about my experience. Have you had any issues with Toyota or Scion cars?
