Common 2003 Saab 9-5 problems
The Saab 9-5, particularly the 2003 model, is known for several common problems that owners have reported. These issues can be categorized into electrical problems, engine problems, transmission problems, suspension problems, and body and exterior issues.
- Engine Problems: Some Saab 9-5 owners have reported issues with the engine, including oil sludge buildup, which can cause engine damage and failure. Additionally, the engine may experience issues such as turbo failure, problems with the timing chain, and overheating .
- Transmission Problems: The Saab 9-5 may experience issues with the automatic transmission, including slipping gears, hard shifting, and problems with the torque converter .

- Body and Exterior Issues: Saab 9-5s are known to have issues with rust, especially around the wheel arches, and the car's paint may fade or peel over time . Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the car's headlights, which can be expensive to replace .
It's important to note that not all Saab 9-5 2003 models will experience these problems, and it's always recommended to have a mechanic inspect the car before purchasing to identify any potential problems and to have a better understanding of the condition of the car. It is also essential to ensure that the vehicle has been properly maintained and has undergone regular servicing to avoid any problems that may arise in the future.
Is Saab 9-5 a good car?
Saab's 9-5 is a competent car with capable and secure handling. A major 2010 redesign produced a car that wasn't as well rounded as previous 9-5s. It handles fairly nimbly and has great fit and finish, but the 220-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine is noisy and a little weak for the class.
What year of Saab is the most reliable?
The Saab 900 (1994-1998) is a mid-size luxury car produced by the Swedish automaker Saab. It is the fourth generation of the Saab 900 series. Known for its Scandinavian design, innovative features, and solid build quality, the Saab 900 (1994-1998) is considered one of the most reliable Saabs in its lineup.
What engine is in a 2003 Saab 9-5 Aero?
Aero models offer the ultimate in performance with a 2.3-liter High-Output Turbo (HOT) four-cylinder engine rated 250 horsepower.
How safe is a Saab 9-5?
Saab also introduced Active Head Restraints which softened the blow of collisions. The 2003 Saab 9-5 scored a 5-star occupant safety rating, pretty damn good. Even in the crash test photos, the crash test dummies seem unharmed.

IT BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER THE CAR AND THE BRAKE PEDAL BECAME VERY HARD TO DEPRESS. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO COAST OFF THE ROAD WHERE THE CAR CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP BLOCKING THE ENTRANCE/EXIT OF A GAS STATION. I WAS LESS THEN 200 FEET FROM WHERE I WAS TURNING ONTO THE ENTRANCE RAMP OF A HIGHWAY. THE GAS STATION ATTENDANT WAS VERY UPSET TELLING ME I CAN NOT LEAVE MY CAR THERE. THE CAR WOULD NOT START AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE MECHANIC. THE CAR HAS BEEN AT THE SERVICE STATION FOR OVER 2 WEEKS NOW. THE TECHNICIAN IS UNABLE TO FIND THE REASON THE CAR STALLED. HOWEVER HE EXPLAINED THAT THE FUEL PUMP AND THE FUEL PUMP RELAY ARE OPERATIONAL. HE ALSO EXPLAINED THAT THERE IS NO ELECTRICITY GETTING TO THE FUEL PUMP. HE HAS ALREADY REPLACED THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AND IS IN THE PROCESS OF CHECKING ALL SENSORS AND RELAYS. DURING MY OWN RESEARCH, I HAVE FOUND THAT THESE CARS HAVE FAULTY ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS WITH MANY RECALLS ON THE DIRECT IGNITION CASSETTE (DIC). AT THIS POINT, WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM. I AM A SINGLE MOTHER WITH 2 YOUNG CHILDREN AND RELY ON THIS AUTOMOBILE ON A DAILY BASIS. IN FACT, I HAD JUST DROPPED MY DAUGHTER (9 YEARS OLD) OFF AT DANCING SCHOOL. I WAS JUST ON THE HIGHWAY 20 MINUTES PRIOR TO DROPPING MY DAUGHTER OFF AT DANCING SCHOOL. I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED THAT THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. I CAN NOT AFFORD TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM HAPPEN WITHOUT CAUSE AND WARNING. WOULD YOU PLEASE FORWARD ME ANY INFORMATION VIA E-MAIL OR REGULAR MAIL THAT WOULD HELP ASSURE ME THIS PROBLEM WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. IF YOU KNOW THIS CAR IS PROBLEMATIC THEN PLEASE INFORM ME TO SELL THE CAR SO I CAN GET A MORE RELIABLE CAR THAT WILL PREVENT THE RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO ME AND MY FAMILY. *TR

I HAVE SPENT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE PURCHASE. THE KNOWN RECALLS MUST BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE THE PARTS, NOT JUST 'YEAR' OR 'SPECIFIC VIN'. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A SAFE, RELIABLE CAR BUT INSTEAD IS CAUSING SERIOUS FINANCIAL ISSUES. PLEASE HELP THE OWNERS ALL OVER THE WORLD, WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR ALL OF THIS.. WE ALREADY PAID FOR THEIR 'BAILOUT'! SINCERELY~ CAN NOT TAKE ANY MORE REPAIRS!!! *TT

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-07-13
- VIN: YS3EH49G433
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: WHILE TRYING TO GET MY CAR INSPECTED, THE TECHNICIAN FOUND SOME VERY CONCERNING UNEVEN WEAR IN THE INSIDE EDGE OF ONE OF THE TIRES. AFTER DOING RESEARCH IT SEEMS TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE FOR MY CAR MODEL. IF THE WEAR IS LEFT UNCHECKED CAN BE A HAZARD FOR EVERYONE ON THE ROAD, FORTUNATELY IT WAS CAUGHT ON TIME, BUT THE FACT THAT THIS IS A WIDELY KNOWN ISSUE WITH NO REAL FIX AVAILABLE MAKES ME WANT TO REPORT IT. THE CAR IS A 2003 SAAB 9-5 AERO, BUT THE DEFECT AFFECTS ALL TRIMS AND YEARS OF THIS MODEL CAR. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-06-01
- VIN: YS3EB49E133
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: MY 2003 9-5 LINEAR IS HAVING MANY OF THE SAME ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AS DESCRIBED BY OTHERS. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON RECENTLY AND I HAD THE CODES READ. THE CODES REPRESENTED A MISFIRE PROBLEM. WHEN DOING RESEARCH I LEARNED THAT IT IS MOST USUALLY THE DIRECT IGNITION MODULE, FAILURE AT 80000 MILES? SINCE THEN THE CAR HAS SUDDENLY SHUT DOWN ON THE HIGHWAY (ONE TIME), FORCING ME TO WEAVE THROUGH TRAFFIC WITH NO POWER TO GET TO THE SIDE. THE CAR RESTARTED IMMEDIATELY AFTER STOPPING. NOW THE CAR SEEMS TO BUCK WHEN DRIVING AND AT IDLE, WHICH IS ALSO REPRESENTATIVE OF A DIM FAILURE. I WILL BE BRINGING IT TO THE SHOP TO GET REPAIRED UNDER MY AFTERMARKET WARRANTY, BUT I FEEL THAT SAAB SHOULD BE PAYING SINCE THE FAILURE IS THE SAME AS THE 2000-2002 MODEL YEAR RECALL. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-04-21
- VIN: YS3EB49E733

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-03-25
- VIN: YS3ED49Z833
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: MY 2003 SAAB 9-5 ARC V6 3.0TURBO HAS BEGUN HAVING ISSUES WITH THE IGNITION. IT FREQUENTLY WILL NOT START. IT TURNS OVER BUT THE ENGINE WILL NOT COMPLETELY FIRE. IN ADDITION, ONCE IT DOES START IT WILL OFTEN STALL OUT. THIS GENERALLY HAPPENS WHEN SWITCHING FROM PARK TO DRIVE OR REVERSE OR WHEN AT A STOPLIGHT/STOP SIGN. ONCE THE CAR STALLS IT DOES NOT JUST RESTART. THE SPARK PLUGS ARE ALL NEW AND NO LINES ARE BROKEN/DAMAGED. I HAVE EXAMINED RECALLS ON THIS CAR AND RECALL05087/15021B DESCRIBES MY PROBLEM AND MY MODEL OF CAR IS LISTED YET I AM TOLD THAT THIS RECALL DOES NOT APPLY TO MY VIN NUMBER. THIS HAS HAPPENED FOR A FEW MONTHS. I AM LISTING THE INCIDENT DATE AS TODAY'S DATE. *TR
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-01-30
- VIN: YS3EH45G833
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: CAR RUNS PERFECTLY AND AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WILL RANDOMLY STALL. IF YOU CAN MANAGE TO NOT GET INTO AN ACCIDENT THE CAR WILL START RIGHT BACK UP AFTER YOU TURN OFF THE KEY AND RESTART. SOMETIMES EVERY COUPLE OF MILES, AND CAN GO SEVERAL MILES WITHOUT THE STALL. SEEMS TO ONLY HAPPEN AT CONSTANT SPEEDS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. DIAGNOSTIC CODES ARE P1230 AND P1261, BUT I THINK THESE ARE RESULTS OF THE SUDDEN STALL, AND NOT THE PROBLEM. *TR UPDATED 03/10/09. *LJ

2003 Saab 9-5 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2003 Saab 9-5.
- Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
- Components: SEATS:FRONT ASSEMBLY:HEAD RESTRAINT
- Summary: SAAB IS RECALLING 57,389 MY 2002-2008 9-5 SERIES VEHICLES FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 201, "OCCUPANT PROTECTION IN INTERIOR IMPACT." DURING COMPLIANCE TESTING, ONE OF THE UPPER INTERIOR OCCUPANT PROTECTION TEST POINTS EXCEEDED THE STANDARD'S REQUIREMENTS.
- Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A VEHICLE CRASH, PERSONAL INJURY TO OCCUPANTS MAY OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A-PILLAR TRIM WITH IMPROVED ENERGY-ABSORBING CAPABILITY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 25, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SAAB AT 1-800-955-9007.
- Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE FUEL PUMP RETAINING TABS HOLDING THE FUEL LINES WERE DAMAGED DURING PRODUCTION.
- Consequence: OVER TIME, THIS COULD CAUSE THE FUEL LINES TO LOOSEN FROM THE PUMP RESULTING IN FUEL LEAKAGE. IF AN IGNITION SOURCE WERE PRESENT, THE FUEL MAY IGNITE RESULTING IN A VEHICLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL DEVELOP A SECURING BRACKET THAT WILL SECURE THE FUEL LINES TO THE FUEL PUMP EVEN IF THE PLASTIC RETAINING TABS SHOULD BREAK. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 13, 2007. THIS IS AN EXPANSION OF PREVIOUS RECALL CAMPAIGNS - SEE 04V557 AND 06V126. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SAAB AT 1-800-955-9007.
- Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:MODULE
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH B308 6-CYLINDER GASOLINE ENGINES MAY EXPERIENCE OVERHEATING AND BURNOUT OF THE ISOLATED GATED BIPOLAR TRANSISTOR (IGBT) WITHIN THE IGNITION DISCHARGE MODULE (IDM) DUE TO INCREASED SUSCEPTIBILITY TO ELECTRICAL LOADS.
- Consequence: OVERHEATING OF THE IGBT OCCURS MOST OFTEN AT ENGINE START-UP, BUT IT MAY ALSO OCCUR WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. ENGINE STALLING MAY OCCUR, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT TO SEE WHAT VERSION IDM IS IN THE VEHICLE AND REPLACE THE IDM IF IT IS A VERSION BUILT PRIOR TO JANUARY 2003. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING DECEMBER 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SAAB AT 1-800-955-9007. NOTE: THIS RECALL IS AN EXPANSION OF A PREVIOUS CAMPAIGN (PLEASE SEE 05V399).
- Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
- Components: WHEELS:HUB
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, IF AN OWNER CHANGES THEIR WHEELS/TIRES BETWEEN SUMMER AND WINTER USING A STEEL WHEEL IN THE WINTER AND AN ALLOY WHEEL IN THE SUMMER, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR RUST AND CONTAMINATION TO BUILD UP ON THE WHEEL HUB DURING THE STEEL WHEEL USAGE. IF THIS OCCURS AND THE CONTAMINATION IS NOT REMOVED, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT AFTER THE TIRE CHANGE SERVICE, SOME OF THIS CONTAMINATION COULD FLAKE OR GRIND AWAY RESULTING IN REDUCED CLAMPING FORCE OF THE WHEEL TO THE HUB. OVER SEVERAL SEASONS, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS REDUCED FORCE COULD RESULT IN FRACTURES DEVELOPING IN THE WHEEL BOLTS DUE TO WHEEL TO HUB MOVEMENT.
- Consequence: THESE FRACTURES WOULD RESULT IN WHEEL BOLT BREAKAGE, ALLOWING THE WHEEL TO DETACH FROM THE WHEEL HUB, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE CONTACTED BY MAIL AND ASKED WHETHER THEY CHANGE BETWEEN STEEL AND ALLOY WHEELS. IF THEY DO ENGAGE IN THIS PRACTICE, THEY WILL BE INSTRUCTED TO BRING THEIR CARS TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE DEALER WILL REMOVE THE WHEELS, CLEAN ANY CONTAMINATION FROM THE WHEEL AND WHEEL HUB, AND REPLACE THE WHEELS USING NEW IMPROVED BOLTS WITH ATTACHED WASHERS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 31, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT SAAB AT 1-800-955-9007.

We were really impressed with our first Saab, so much so that we decided to buy a used Saab for our son's first car. The dealership's customer care and service has been truly outstanding. I have owned several vehicles over the years and I can honestly say that this has been the best experience so far.
-
This is my third Saab and it is by far the best one yet. The build quality is superb with not a single defect. The body is stiffer and tracks better than my old 900 or my old 9-3. The base model has plenty of power and handles beautifully. The only downside is the dealer where I purchased it, but then again, have you ever met a car salesman that you liked? I bought from 128 Saab for the price, but I go to Charles River Saab for the service.
-
Overall, this car is a great driving experience. It offers the speed of a high performance car, and the safety associated with Swedish designed cars. I'm so glad to hear that you truly love driving this car!
-
I recently purchased an '03 9-5 Aero with the touring package and got an amazing deal on it. The car was a leftover and had only 100 miles on the odometer with plastic still on the seats. I am extremely satisfied with this car as it has exceeded all of my expectations. It perfectly combines the luxury of a sedan with the sportiness of a European sports car. The pop-out cupholder is a unique feature that adds to the car's charm. The turbo provides an impressive amount of power and the car is also very comfortable and spacious. The auto transmission works flawlessly and adds to the overall driving experience.

The Saab 9-5 Aero is a fantastic car that boasts both style and performance. With 250 hp and exceptional road-holding capabilities (thanks to its ESP), it easily outperforms the BMW 530 (225 hp), Audi A6 3., and MB C320 or even E320. But what really sets it apart is the sheer fun of driving it - it's more enjoyable than any of the other cars mentioned. While the interior may not be the best in its category, the 9-5 Aero's sporty styling more than makes up for it. As someone who recently traded in my A6 (2.7T) for the Aero, I can confidently say that it's a young, sporty car that's an absolute joy to drive. I highly recommend giving the Saab 9-5 Aero a chance - you won't regret it!

I recently purchased a 95 Linear on 05/03 with only 23 miles. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the car. At 3k miles, the back passenger door latch jammed, and at 7k miles, the sunroof jammed. At 14k miles, there was some noise coming from the front wheel, but the bearing was replaced. At 35k miles, the trunk would not open, and there was a recall to replace the clamp on the fuel system. At 41k miles, the engine light came on, and the O2 sensor was replaced. At 44k miles, there was a front axle leak and a broken belt protector. At 56k miles, there was a heater valve leak. At 58k miles, the O2 sensor and fuel pump were replaced, and the car just died in the middle of the road. Now, at 61k miles, I am stranded again as the car is choking, jerking, and not getting into gear. I am very dissatisfied with these issues, despite following the maintenance schedule.

I have experienced several build quality issues with my car, including an unlubricated steering column, rattles, a loose door hinge causing a whistle in the door, panel lights flickering, and other electrical issues. Additionally, the cupholders are not practical, with the front armrest one being unusable and the one on the dash being too flimsy to hold anything other than a can of coke. While the acceleration is satisfactory, the car lacks grip on any surface, with the tires squealing at even the slightest touch of the pedal. Despite these issues, I believe that I paid a significant amount for my Hyundai and expect a higher level of quality.

We leased the car in late May and unfortunately experienced some issues with it. In mid-July, the car started leaking transmission fluid which caused some damage to the ignition system. Although it took 2 days for roadside assistance to pick up the car, it was eventually taken to the dealer for repairs. However, it sat on the dealer lot for 5 days before someone looked at it. We were initially supposed to receive a Saab as a loaner car, but we were given a Ford Focus instead. Despite this setback, my parents (with whom I share the payments) were able to drive the car to Atlanta and achieved an average speed of 66 mph and fuel efficiency of 32 mpg. Unfortunately, a thumping noise started coming from the air conditioning and this morning, the car began to leak transmission fluid again.

This is a nice car, but I would suggest being cautious when considering a used one. I have had to bring it back to the dealer for minor repairs countless times, and unfortunately, these minor issues have caused the car to stop running, resulting in the need for a tow. If you're in the market for a reliable used luxury car, there may be better options available.
