Common 2006 Saab 9-5 problems

The Saab 9-5, particularly the 2006 model, is known for several common problems that owners have reported. These issues span various components of the car, including electrical systems, engine, transmission, suspension, and body and exterior.

Electrical issues are a prevalent problem in the Saab 9-5. The car's electrical system is known to have problems with the ignition switch, dashboard lights, and power windows. Some owners have reported issues with the car's electrical system, which can result in issues such as a dead battery or problems with the alternator

Engine problems are also common in the Saab 9-5. Some owners have reported issues with the engine, including oil sludge buildup, which can cause engine damage and failure. Additionally, the engine may experience issues such as turbo failure, problems with the timing chain, and overheating. The 2001 diesel engine, in particular, is known to have problems with nozzles failing, pistons burning out, and cylinder liners settling due to high mileage

Transmission problems are another common issue in the Saab 9-5. The automatic transmission may experience issues such as slipping gears, hard shifting, and problems with the torque converter

Suspension problems are also prevalent in the Saab 9-5. The car may experience issues with the suspension, including worn-out shocks, struts, and bushings, which can cause excessive vibrations, noise, and a rough ride

Body and exterior issues are also common in the Saab 9-5. The car is known to have issues with rust, especially around the wheel arches, and the car's paint may fade or peel over time. Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the car's headlights, which can be expensive to replace

It's important to note that these problems may not apply to all Saab 9-5 2006 models, and it's always recommended to have a mechanic inspect the car before purchasing to identify any potential problems and to have a better understanding of the condition of the car. It is also essential to ensure that the vehicle has been properly maintained and has undergone regular servicing to avoid any problems that may arise in the future

Is Saab 9-5 a good car?

Saab's 9-5 is a competent car with capable and secure handling. A major 2010 redesign produced a car that wasn't as well rounded as previous 9-5s. It handles fairly nimbly and has great fit and finish, but the 220-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine is noisy and a little weak for the class.

What year of Saab is the most reliable?

The Saab 900 (1994-1998) is a mid-size luxury car produced by the Swedish automaker Saab. It is the fourth generation of the Saab 900 series. Known for its Scandinavian design, innovative features, and solid build quality, the Saab 900 (1994-1998) is considered one of the most reliable Saabs in its lineup.

How long does a Saab turbo last?

Turbos are designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle (or around 150,000 miles); however, it's possible for them to wear out over time depending on how hard you drive the car and the original build quality of the turbo.

Why does Saab have a bad reputation?

One of the main reasons for its failure is poor reliability. The 9-5 had a well-constructed body, but its interior doesn't hold up over the years. Wear and tear are relatively noticeable, and the green-backlit LED display became a chore to read with age.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-05-26
  • VIN: YS3EH49G463
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL - AIRBAG ON ABOVE CAR WAS REPLACED UNDER RECALL ON 5/25/2017. NOW, THE AIRBAG LIGHT KEEPS TURNING ON SPORADICALLY. THE GARAGE - JUST SAAB (513) 527-4300 - WHO REPLACED THE AIRBAG CLAIMED THE FIRST TIME WHEN I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THEM THAT IT WAS "RESISTANCE" THAT CAUSED THE LIGHT TO COME ON AND THEY FIXED THIS PROBLEM. THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS STILL COMING ON SPORADICALLY AND I BELIEVE THAT THE AIRBAG I RECEIVED AS A REPLACEMENT IS DEFECTIVE. THE GARAGE INSISTS I DRIVE THE CAR BACK TO THEM, AGAIN, SO THEY CAN CHECK THE AIRBAG AGAIN. HERE IS WHAT IS HAPPENING: WHEN THE CAR IS BACKED OUT OF THE GARAGE, THE AIRBAG LIGHT AND CHIME COME ON AND STAY ON FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN THE AIRBAG LIGHT TURNS OFF. THEN, THE CAR IS DRIVING FORWARD, AGAIN, THE AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THEN TURNS OFF. THE CAR IS DRIVEN FOR MANY MILES AND THE LIGHT STAYS OFF. THE AIRBAG LIGHT DOESN'T COME WHEN THE CAR DRIVES OVER A BUMP. THE CAR CAN BE DRIVEN FOR MANY MILES AND THE LIGHT DOESN'T COME ON. THE RANDOMNESS OF THE AIRBAG LIGHT TURNING ON AND OFF MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE REASON FOR THE OCCURRENCE OTHER THAN ASSUMING THAT THE REPLACED TAKATA AIRBAG IS DEFECTIVE - STILL - SINCE THE CAR NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM UNTIL THE AIRBAG WAS REPLACED BY JUST SAAB IN CINCINNATI

Negative 2006 Saab 9-5 car reviews

  1. Sherman Larson 2024-06-10

There's a lot to like in this car! It has a great combination of power and fuel economy, and there's plenty of room in both the interior and trunk. Plus, it's a unique car that you don't see everyday. However, there are some areas for improvement. The quality could be better, as the engine at idle sends vibrations through the whole car and many interior pieces now vibrate. Additionally, there is some wind noise and a few issues with air bags, sun roof rattling, loss of coolant on trips, and gas gauge failure. While these issues are concerning, I'm confident that they can be addressed and I'm hopeful for the long term durability of this car.

  2. Hazle Tillman 2024-02-04

After the first few thousand miles, I began to experience some issues with my car. Unfortunately, it has been necessary to visit the dealer shop 2-3 times a month for repairs, each lasting 3-4 hours. The rattling and noises from the roof, body, upholstery, front panel, and door trim have become quite intolerable, especially with additional passengers. On cold days, the doors would not close or lock properly, and the hinges require lubrication and tightening every 1K miles. Additionally, the driver's seat and steering wheel vibrate at idling, and the car occasionally pulls sharply to the left. The fuel economy is also quite poor, with only 16-18 mpg on the highway. Unfortunately, new problems seem to arise with every repair, making the car difficult to fix. It can also take up to 30 days to receive new parts, and Saab does not offer loaners. I hope these issues can be resolved soon.

Positive 2006 Saab 9-5 car reviews

  1. Brycen Tillman 2024-11-05

I've owned four Saabs (all 9-3s) and I must say that the 9-5 is a solid and reliable car. It's not the best for city driving, but it performs superbly on the highway. My wife loves this car and wouldn't trade it for anything. She test drove several SUVs, but feels safer in the Saab!

  2. Coleman Pfeffer 2024-10-06

I've owned this car for 2 months and I must say, compared to the 5 Series BMWs, Mercedes E Class, and the Audi A6, Saab gives you more car for the money.

  3. Kade Goyette 2024-10-03

I've had my 2006 for about two weeks now and I must say, I'm really enjoying it! I traded in my 2003 Aero, which was also great, but I just wanted a new one. The 9-5 has all the comforts and amenities I need in a car, and it comes at a great price when compared to the Euro competition. I've had very minor issues with my Saab in the past, and it only went to the dealer maybe twice a year. I did notice some torque steer, but it was not very noticeable unless you really pushed the car.

  4. Clyde Mayer 2024-09-17

The 2006 Saab 9-5 is an amazing sports sedan and highway cruiser that offers a lot of car for its price. It comes with most optional features that can get quite expensive on other cars, such as seat/mirror memory buttons, dual power seats, heated front & rear seats, and an in-dash 6 cd changer. The interior is comfy and easy to use, making it great for traveling even long distances with 4 people. The engine has great performance - it's amazing how much pull it has. You can floor it to 80 mph and it feels like the 9-5 isn't even breathing hard, plus you feel like you're only traveling about 55 mph! Sure, there's a bit of torque steer if you floor it, but I think that makes the car a bit more exciting to drive :)

  5. Alec Cormier 2024-09-07

I'm so glad I stumbled upon Saab! I heard about some great deals on 2006 models and decided to take a look. To my surprise, I found one of only three 2006 SportCombi's left in Arizona. After taking it for a test drive, I was completely smitten. This wagon handles the road like a dream and has some serious speed. The ventilated seats are a lifesaver, especially in the Arizona heat! The Sentronic feature is also a lot of fun. Plus, the sound system is fantastic and there's plenty of room for all my cargo. I absolutely love it!
