1996 Chevrolet Caprice problems
The Chevrolet Caprice is a full-size car produced by Chevrolet in North America for the 1965 to 1996 model years. Full-size Chevrolet sales peaked in 1965 with over a million sold. It was the most popular car in the U.S. in the 1960s and early 1970s, which, during its lifetime, included the Biscayne, Bel Air, and Impala.
Introduced in mid-1965 as a luxury trim package for the Impala four-door hardtop, Chevrolet offered a full line of Caprice models for the 1966 and subsequent model years, including a "formal hardtop" coupe and an Estate station wagon. The 1971 to 1976 models are the largest Chevrolets ever built. The downsized 1977 and restyled 1991 models were awarded Motor Trend Car of the Year. Production ended in 1996.
From 2011 to 2017, the Caprice nameplate returned to North America as a full-size, rear wheel drive police vehicle, a captive import from Australia built by General Motors's subsidiary Holden—the police vehicle is a rebadged version of the Holden WM/WN Caprice. The nameplate also had a civilian and police presence in the Middle East from 1999 to 2017, where the imported Holden Statesman/Caprice built by Holden was marketed as the Chevrolet Caprice in markets such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Common 1996 Chevrolet Caprice problems
One common problem with the 1996 Chevrolet Caprice is acceleration issues. According to a post on Impala Forums, a user reported that their Caprice barely moves when they put it in drive and attempt to take off, as if it's not getting gas. This problem occurs every time the user drives the car. The user also mentioned that they noticed a voltage drop to about 11.8 volts and a temperature increase to the red mark when the car acted up. They have replaced several parts, including the AC Delco Platinum Plugs, wires, timing chain, cap & rotor, coil, ICM, exhaust manifold gaskets, both catalytic converters, 4 new oxygen sensors, 140 amp alternator, a/c compressor/dryer/orficetube, and some other miscellaneous items. However, the problem persists. The scanner tool throws codes for crankshaft position sensor and IC high voltage.
Another issue that some 1996 Chevrolet Caprice owners have reported is starting problems. A post on ImpalasForum describes a user's Caprice that would just spin but not turn over on the first crank. The user tried changing batteries, replacing the fuel pump, fuel pump relay, wiring harness, fuel filter, ECM, ignition coil, crank sensor, and still, the car would only spin. The user also mentioned that they recently bought a new Chandler Motorsports Distributor that they have not yet installed.

Great car! I really respect it because it looks like a police cruiser. Although it can be expensive to repair, I've found it to be one of the best cars I've owned. I've had it for about 4 years now, since it had 72,000 miles, and it currently has 209,000 miles. I do a lot of highway driving and I'm hoping to get it up to 300,000 miles. Overall, I'm really happy with it!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some information about my car that might be helpful. With cruise control, it cruises at a smooth 70 mph and gets an impressive 24.5 true mpg at that speed. I recently replaced the factory shocks with stiffer premium shocks and have noticed a significant improvement in steering and stopping. While it may not be the fastest at takeoff, it has enough power to go from 30 to 70 mph. The ride is very comfortable, but not too cushy or mushy, especially with the P225-75/15 Michelins. Additionally, there's plenty of room inside (I'm 6'2

What a great car! Chevrolet really nailed it with this one. The body has already clocked 150,000 miles, but all major components were replaced at 70,000. It's fast, fun to drive, and I haven't had any problems with it to this day.
Jaleel Kuhlman 2024-10-08
Great car! It's such a shame they stopped making them. It has more style and power than you would expect.

This is my second Caprice and I love it. There are very few things that you can't do with this car. The interior is very spacious, you can fit a family of five comfortably. The trunk is huge and for a car, the towing capacity is pretty good. Chevy had a great thing going, I can't believe they stopped building these great cars.
